Frazer 2012 Covenant
Word-Centered, World-Changing I will open the Word daily to know and worship God I will respond to the Word by aligning my thoughts and actions to its truths; I will grow in the Word through a regular discipleship group; I will live the Word in my key relationships at home, school, work and leisure; I will share the Word by telling my story to win people to Christ; I will show the Word through service and missions–especially to the poor, the widow and the orphan; I will stand on the Word by speaking up for truth and justice with humility. 2
“It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4 Dear Frazer Family, God’s Word is powerful and transformative. Daily time spent reading and studying the Bible may be the most important, life changing habit you will ever develop as a follower of Christ. As I begin each day, I have great expectations before I ever open my eyes. Every morning’s sunrise fills me with awe of the power and majesty of our Creator God and I praise him as the Holy Spirit brings to my mind His character and power. Then I open His Word! At the age of eight, I recognized my need for a savior and asked Jesus to be Lord of my life. My first Bible was the King James Version. I remember reading it and having a very limited understanding, but I had been taught the importance of reading my Bible. Later, as a teenager, when going through tough times I would go to my room and read my Living Bible. There I found comfort and peace and felt the presence of God. Over the years God’s Word, written and spoken, has changed me. I most often use the NIV or NLT version for study and devotion now. Almost 50 years after I first began reading it, my time in the Word every morning has become so much more than a habit…it is a Divine Appointment with my God and friend. I encourage you to begin reading your Bible every day. Make it a priority. Invite the Holy Spirit to teach you, to correct you, to encourage you, and to empower you through the Word of God. As you do this, you will know God and grow in relationship with Him and others. Then you will be prepared to help others grow as a disciple. Our Team here at Frazer is committed to helping you grow to spiritual maturity. We are blessed to have wonderful pastors and worship services. We have almost 60 Sunday classes and numerous small groups that meet during the week that provide solid Biblical teaching. As in the past, this Connections magazine is your comprehensive guide to Bible Study groups and classes, from Sunday morning to weekdays, and from Children to Older Adult. This year we are providing additional tools to help you get started or to take the next step. 1. Bible Reading Plans— to help you get started and establish some accountability by keeping a record of your reading (page 4) 2. Choosing a Bible Translation—to help you pick the best version for you to read (page 5). 3. Christian Basics Classes—to give clear first steps and next steps to those starting a journey of faith (pages 14). 4. Discipleship Training—to better equip those who are ready to begin sharing what they have learned with others, since part of being a disciple is making disciples (page 15). Our desire is for each of us to Love God, Love People and Live Unashamed…through the transforming power of the Word of God. —Susan Fisher, Director of Discipleship

What version should I read? The Bible was written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, so it must be translated into English. One way to do this is “literal,” or word-for-word translation; another way is “paraphrase,” or thought-for-thought. Most translations fall somewhere in-between. Versions that try to combine the best of both paraphrase and literal translation include the New International Version (NIV) and New Living Translation (NLT). Paraphrase versions may be easier to understand or may capture more of the emotion of the Biblical writer. This makes them good for devotional use and for beginners. Examples are the Contemporary English Version (CEV) and The Message (MSG). More literal translations, on the other hand, may be more accurate and precise, making them good for in-depth study and more experienced readers. Examples are the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) and the New American Standard Version (NASB). What about the old King James Version? It is a beautiful work of art, although English has changed so much since 1611 that most readers find it almost as difficult as a foreign language. The New King James Version (NKJV) is an attempt to modernize it that is considered almost as literal as the NRSV and NASB. Remember that, whatever version you use, translation is only one part of understanding the Bible. The more important part is giving full attention to what you read, and being open to allow the Holy Spirit to teach you not only what the Bible says, but what He wants you to do about it.

It’s hard enough to train kids to behave, but good behavior isn’t what Jesus calls for in the Bible. God wants hearts and souls that are shaped in vibrant faith and love toward Him and others. In Spiritual Parenting, Michelle Anthony calls us parents to depend upon God for our children’s spiritual and moral development, urging us toward a heart posture of surrender and faithfulness. The end goal is a vibrant faith that is passed on from one generation to another. Parents are, by the power of God’s Spirit, to depend on God in order to create home environments that God can use to beckon our kids to Him. Isn’t it time to embrace this revolutionary concept? cut out and place in your home, car or office to help you begin hiding god’s word in your heart.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 16
2 Timothy 3:16-17 niv
How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. 10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. 11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 1
Psalm 1:1-2 niv
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 4
Matthew 4:4 niv
Psalm 119:9-11 niv
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 2
1 Peter 2:2-3 niv
If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 8

John 15:10-12 niv 22
