welcome

Welcome to the Fraser Coast From the General Manager

Welcome to Queensland’s Fraser Coast – one of the best regions in Australia for `big nature’ attractions and experiences. Each year thousands of international and domestic tourists visit us to get up close with humpback whales and tour World Heritage listed Fraser Island (the largest sand island in the world) where you can swim in freshwater lakes, walk in rainforest literally growing out of the sand and drive a 4WD or land via light aircraft on the beach. Our region, nestled to the north of Brisbane and within a short flight of Lady Elliot Island and the Southern Great Barrier Reef, is renowned for its unspoilt beauty in its natural state. It’s relaxed, family friendly and yet sophisticated, with quality resorts and accommodation to meet the expectations of today’s savvy traveller, where value for money and quality of experience counts most. The Fraser Coast has world-class drawcards and has a proud history of working with the international tourism community. We look forward to connecting with you at ATE and assisting wherever possible to ensure that international travellers continue to enjoy the authentic experiences our region provides.

You’ll never forget the wonder you feel when you let your eyes drink in the beauty of the blue hues of Fraser Island’s Lake McKenzie, or gaze for the first time at the tops of the towering ancient trees in the Valley of the Giants or experience the thrill of zooming along 75 Mile Beach – which doubles as a 4WD highway and a landing strip for light aircraft.

Crystal-clear, freshwater streams fed by the water table and rainforest trees literally growing out of the sand are matched with an, at times, alien landscape created by huge sand blows from winds belting across the Pacific.

Fraser Island marked the 25th anniversary of its World Heritage Listing in December, 2017 and is celebrating with a range of commemorative activities in 2018.

There are many ways to experience the island’s exceptional landscapes – take a self-drive getaway, join a guided tour, go on a camping safari, book a room at a resort or explore the island on foot through part or all of the 90km Fraser Island Great Walk.

Hervey Bay Hervey Bay has an abundance of riches outshining many other tourist destinations in Australia. It is the stepping off point to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, the location of some of the world’s best whale watching encounters … and it has arguably the safest, family-friendly beaches on the Queensland coast. Add its proximity to Lady Elliot Island, the southernmost coral cay at the start of the Great Barrier Reef, world-class fishing, year-round swimming and boating and you can understand why hundreds of thousands of visitors flock here each year. Hervey Bay has five great beaches along its 16km Esplanade foreshore, each with tracts of beautiful sand looking out to calm, protected waters sheltered by Fraser Island. If you want to unwind, Hervey Bay has a laid-back lifestyle that welcomes barefoot walks along the beach, bicycle rides beside the ocean and eating fish and chips out of the paper wrapping with your fingers. In the Bay, life is built around the stunning esplanade dotted with parks, playgrounds, piers, picnic areas, barbecues, alfresco cafés, restaurants and shops. This water lover’s paradise is made for swimming, fishing, water sports and fun beach activities, no matter what the season. Encounters with humpback whales, turtles, dolphins and dugongs are possible through organised tours and by chance while out sailing or cruising on the water and also from the beach. Pods of dolphins are often spotted playing off the shoreline or at the end of the Bay’s iconic Urangan Pier, where you can also see schools of fish and rays in the clear waters below.

Historic Urangan Pier, established 1917

Walk through a doorway into the past at the award-winning Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum to see how tough and resourceful settlers needed to be to survive. Explore 21 buildings from those early days, examine some of the 12,000 items and take part in interactive demonstrations. The Bay’s splendid natural setting, wide range of accommodation choices and attractions combine to ensure it offers something for just about everyone. It’s the ideal family getaway, a wonderful romantic escape and an ecoadventure mecca. After coming here, you won’t want to say goodbye.

Maryborough, the home of Mary Poppins

Bronze statues of Duncan Chapman and Mary Poppins illustrate the contrasts of Maryborough’s turbulent and enchanting colonial past. When Wide Bay Village (later renamed Maryborough) was established in 1848 there were roughly 2500 white settlers in the State of Victoria and only 60 hectares under cultivation – it was a pioneer village for Australia in every sense of the word. The sculpture, in Queens Park, of Lieutenant Duncan Chapman, the first Australian ashore at Gallipoli, symbolises the tough military and industrial roles of a city built with fierce passion that often strayed into brutal, bizarre, risque and haunting realms. A short stroll through Queens Park leads to Cherry Tree Lane and the statue of Mary Poppins perched beside the 136-year-old bank building where her creator, Pamela Lyndon Travers, was born in 1889.

Maryborough Maryborough ‘wears on its sleeve’ the tales of its captivating colonial past mixed with an artistic exuberance. Stories of loss, triumph and unbreakable spirit are dispersed throughout the town via its heritage buildings, striking public art, statues, memorials and museums. 8

visitfrasercoast.com

Maryborough’s link to the world’s most famous nanny typifies the heritage charm and creative talents that rock the cradle of modern life here. Bubbling through the community is the spirit that rose from a bawdy river port to create a wealthy 19th Century business centre and a powerful 20th Century city of industrial ingenuity. Crammed with intriguing tales and people who love to tell them, Maryborough is friendly, quirky and an architectural gem of Australia’s colonial era. A story trail with animated yarns and bronze statuettes winds through city streets that are lit into night displays where an image of Mary Poppins floats over rooftops.

destination highlights

Great Barrier Reef Uncovering the mystery of Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef is within a short 40-minute scenic flight of the Fraser Coast to magical Lady Elliot Island. Experiencing the wonders of healthy coral reefs and an abundance of turtles, dolphins, manta rays and reef sharks is as simple as stepping off the beach and into the ocean with an average visibility of about 25 metres–plus all year round. Lady Elliot Island is a 45-hectare coral cay at the southern tip of the reef, 130km north-east of Hervey Bay. The flight over the Fraser Coast, the Great Sandy Strait and Fraser Island is a mini-adventure in itself. It is in a highly protected Green Zone and is a sanctuary for more than 1200 species of marine life. The island is known as home of the manta ray with more than 1000 recorded in the vicinity. Lady Elliot Island has also been named as one of the top five destinations in the world to scuba dive with manta rays which are more active between May and August but can be seen all year round. The island has the second-highest diversity of bird species on the Great Barrier Reef with up to 95 different species of seabirds, land birds and shorebirds. Perfect for twitchers! Divers can enjoy the surrounding reef with a fascinating mix of hard and soft corals and more than 18 different dive sites, including wreck dives and a blow hole. Getting there: Hervey Bay is the busiest access point to Lady Elliot with three return flights per day. The island is an exclusive destination, only serviced by Seair Pacific with boat access impractical.
