Cheers to Joburg’s Finest Gin Bar!

Since its inception in April 2019, JoziGin – local eatery has won a permanent place in the hearts (and throats) of Jozi’s discerning gin and foodie scene. Located centrally, just off busy Rivonia Road, in the upmarket shopping centre of The Wedge and with a stunning terrace overlooking the green lawns of Johannesburg Country Club, this venue is destined to remain the trusted local of the new normal for years to come. As society opens up and we learn to embrace the new abnormal, JoziGin serves up some of our nation’s favourite street eats and together with the virus, all pretensions have been aired out the window … and its back to the streets. Head Chef Wayne has managed to distil the very essence of nostalgic Jozi fare and classic international street food into their new comfort cuisine menu. The perfectly aged juicy steaks and the massive Tomahawks are legendary …

JoziGin has taken the popular Kota out of the township and rubbed it the Sandton way, creating the Deluxe Jozi City Kota with tender herb-rubbed sirloin strips, twice-fried fries and herb cream, served in a half white loaf with red and green chillies. We know that finger-licking is frowned upon … but this is plate-lickingly delicious! The outrageously delectable and messy “Boujie Boeries” is a MUST TRY! This meaty venison foot-long resting on chillies in a long seed roll topped with home-made chakalaka and sweet fried onions, is the business – just bite and sigh. The salads and the pastas are spot on too! The choices of happiness and comfort are abundant and the extensive selection of local and international craft gin

– served in massive goblets with exciting tonics and fresh exotic garnishes will have you swooning! Gin aficionados travel across the city to partake in the ‘Gin Journey Experience’ – an unrivalled sensory journey in gentle, exotic botanicals, magic tonics and freshest garnishes presented by the Gin Masters of Inverroche. These sessions are so popular that bookings in advance is essential. Weekends come alive at JoziGin with resident house music events curated by some of the city’s hottest DJ’s. JoziGin has become one of the most loved entertainment and experience brands in Mzansi and with cold beers on tap and an extensive wine list.

Artistic Spaces

South Africa’s leading co-workspace solutions provider, Workshop17 has recently opened its new The Bank facility in the trendy suburb of Rosebank in Johannesburg. This is the sixth addition to the company’s existing footprint of central business district and suburban state-of-the-art facilities. The prolonged impact of Covid-19, in particular the need for social distancing, has caused entrepreneurs and corporates to look for new ways of working, as well as alternative workspaces that are flexible, aspirational and affordable. “Companies are looking for solutions that fit the ‘new normal’, where working from home is combined with coming to an office to meet, work together, build culture and be inspired,” says Paul Keursten, Workshop17 co-founder and CEO.

A Poet is Born

The poetry scene is alive and thriving in South Africa. Meet Mandisa Vundla – a Soweto- KZN Poet, Educator, Curator and Founder of The Poetry Zone ZA: a poetry company, invested in developing collaborative, multidisciplinary solutions to elevate the standard and value of South African poetry; poets and their works in order to transform the ancient oral art into a sustainable business practice, that enables poets to thrive in a competitive local and global creative economy. Emerging from the South African slam poetry culture as a young ambitious spoken-word artist, she quickly became the only poet to hold the title of ‘two times undefeated Word N Sound slam champ’. In 2015, she co-edited the groundbreaking anthology ‘Home is Where the Mic Is’ and went on to curate the Poetry Africa International Festival in 2017. Over the past ten years Vundla has headlined a multitude of festivals including: Poetry Africa International (DBN), Harare International Poetry Festival (Zim), Lagos International Poetry Festival (Nig), Arts Alive – Speak The Mind, International Poetry Fest (JHB), Word N Sound International Festival (JHB), South African Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia (Italy), Kochi Biennale (India), Serendipity Arts Festival (India), Mama’s Open Mic (Belgium), Unislam (UK).

The launch of Workshop17 The Bank provides an opportunity for the company to respond to the growing customer demand for workspaces in suburban areas which have grown in popularity as they are both central, and closer to the homes of many. Workshop 17 has launched a future-fit office inside ‘The Bank’ one of the largest, and most significant property developments in Rosebank. The Bank has been described as ‘South Africa’s Living Gallery’ with an ambience of the midcentury modern designed building. The Bank features more than 800 art pieces ranging from oils, watercolours and acrylic paintings on canvas to charcoal drawings, photographs and collages to create a Mecca of original local art. Many of the artworks were specially commissioned for the building and the collection on display include pieces by Nico Krijno, Gerda Scheepers and Anna Sango.  The design marvel and iconic building proudly showcases one of the largest collections of original South African artworks in one location; while enhancing the captivating ambience of the mid-century modern architecturally designed building.  Workshop 17 members have easy access to voco™, the boutique hotel situated in The Bank, to book an overnight stay and can dine at the Proud Mary restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner or take a walk to other nearby restaurants and cafés to try different local cuisine.

Vundla is currently working on her debut Tribute Spoken Word Album ‘A Love Song for Miriam’ that pays homage to the luminary in honour, humanitarian and iconic relic of African song: Mama Miriam Makeba. In March 2021, Vundla founded the Brave Spoken Youth poetry mentorship program in a partnership with the Soweto Theatre to hone the voices of young emerging poets and to cultivate a youth spoken word culture to counter the underrepresentation of young maligned voices in South Africa’s spoken word scene.

Sandton’s Favourite Dining Oasis – A JOBURG PARKS LEGACY

Truffles on the Park has established itself as a key entertainment destination in the Sandton lifestyle and foodie scene. Located on the corner of Daisy Street and Rivonia Road, the name ‘TRUFFLES’ is a cheeky play on its location in the popular Mushroom Farm Park – Sandton hubs premier recreational space, a mere stroll away from the stock exchange and banking district. The restaurant occupies a modern purpose-built structure with an airy architectural aesthetic featuring exposed steel and floor-to ceiling glass construction elements and state-of-the art organic green interiors from award winning design studio Blacksmith Interior Inspiration – experts in category-defining hospitality design. The eclectic TRUFFLES menu is ever evolving under the caring tutelage of Master Chef Thulani Mathebula and the meticulous wardship of foodie owner Carmen Graham. An offering unlike any other in the city, the food and beverages are artisanal creations and the flavours, well developed and exquisitely balanced. Inspired from a variety of cuisines – Mediterranean, Asian and South American influences in tastes and ingredients. Chef Thulani has a magic knack of bringing the elements on a plate to harmonious fruition. Some of the most popular dishes include the Black Truffle and Wild Mushroom Risotto, Thai Spiced Salmon Cakes, Miso-Glazed Grilled Short Ribs, Peruvian Chicken Skewers and Tender Braised Pork Collar with Chorizo-stuffed Mushrooms. There is also an extensive fresh Sushi and Sashimi selection and being a vegetarian himself, Chef Thulani has made sure that there is an array of options for vegans and vegetarians including a Warm Moroccan Chickpea Salad, an AjiVerde Marinated Tofu Bowl, The Grilled Halloumi Burger and Roasted Mushroom Gnocchi. The cocktail offering puts a refreshingly creative spin on well-known classics, using curated botanical ingredients to add flavour and flair. For those looking for variety, the Palate Experience – a series of mini cocktails including The Rose Potion, The Digestive, The Cleanser, The Amberetto or Passion of Coco is a unique indulgence. Truffles has recently added a sunny open beach section and bar. Every table has a unique view with the guest experience being something sensational! But don’t take our word for it, experience it for yourself …

Keeping it in the Family with New Releases at La Motte

Did you know that Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc are the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon? La Motte has introduced its 2021 La Motte Sauvignon Blanc and 2018 La Motte Cabernet Sauvignon, keeping it in the family together with its Classic Collection – the 2018 La Motte Millennium (30% Cabernet Franc). After a subtle update to their packaging, this versatile selection, trusted for its consistency and elegance promises to make a stylish statement on any dinner table this winter.

The La Motte Sauvignon Blanc (R89 from the tasting room) is renowned for its elegance and for the 2021 vintage, cool climate grapes and 8% Semillon contribute to its complexity. A refreshing glass on its own, and delightful partner to food. Try it with seafood, grilled Mediterranean vegetables, spicy Asian flavours and goat’s cheese.

La Motte Cabernet Sauvignon (R149 from the tasting room) made from grapes of various origins and clones and matured in French oak barrels for 16 months, is known for its elegance and exceptional maturation potential. Thanks to its prominent minerality, firm tannins and flavourful intensity, it is a natural partner to lamb and beef, root vegetables and hardier herbs like rosemary and thyme. The 2018 La Motte Millennium (R99 from the tasting room) consists of Merlot (52%), Cabernet Franc (30%), Petit Verdot (10%) and Malbec (8%). A South African interpretation of the famous Bordeaux-style red blend, it responds well to red meat and roasts. Its accommodating structure allows for mild curries and hard cheese – exceptional with creamy sauces and the earthiness of mushrooms.

Available from the La Motte Tasting Room or visit for online purchases and sublime recipes. Online purchases of six bottles or more qualify for free nationwide delivery.

Pardus is the Latin for panther or leopard and of course a fitting name for a new addition to the Leopard’s Leap collection of wines. Other than acknowledging a lifelong commitment to the protection of our natural treasures (especially through our support of the Cape Leopard Trust and the plight of the vulnerable Cape Mountain Leopard), the 2018 Pardus by Hein Koegelenberg, is an elegant red blend, celebrating the Leopard’s Leap CEO’s passion for wine and an everyday quality lifestyle.  The 2018 Pardus is an elegant wine, made from 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cinsaut. The nose is layered and multi-dimensional with lively red and purple fruit as well as subtle spice following through on the palate. Beautifully balanced for a wellstructured and elegant wine. Price: R170 from the Leopard’s Leap Tasting Room or online. Online purchases of six bottles or more qualify for free nationwide delivery.
