NEW FROM BEST SELLING AUTHOR PATRICK NOONAN

Township God Write-On Publishing is proud to announce the launch of ‘Township God’, the latest offering by Patrick Noonan, author of the best-selling ‘They’re Burning the Churches’. This new book is a collection of vignettes and stories taken from Noonan’s experiences during nearly four decades as a Franciscan Missionary priest in the townships of the Vaal triangle in South Africa. Also included are some of his experiences during a sojourn in the Holy Land with the Franciscan Order, the Custodians of the Holy Places. His stories, some humourous, some tragic, some historical and political, all have the following in common: a deep and abiding spirituality, and compassion for, empathy with, and love for his mostly poverty-stricken flock.

R A DIO VERITA S C O NTINU E S TO IM P ROVE ! CONTENTS Radio Veritas is always trying to improve its Catholic broadcast experience for its listeners - both from a content and a technical perspective. This is in spite of severe budgetary restrictions, and is primarily made possible through the generosity of listeners, local donors and overseas grants. The acquisition of a van and trailer last year, thanks to a donation from Germany, as well as from a local business, has vastly increased the station’s outside broadcast capability, putting it in a position to cover major events like the feast of Bl Benedict Daswa, the recent Bishop’s Plenary and the InterDiocesan Catholic Church Choirs Music Association Competition in Gabarone. (see below).

On Page 15, you can also read about the new console, or mixing desk, installed in the Studio over Christmas, and in our last issue we spoke about the testing being done in preparation for the launch of the new digital broadcast technology. All this in the interest of improving the Radio Veritas product and all this, thanks to you!

T

he celebrations of the second Feast Day of South Africa’s saint, Blessed Benedict Daswa, were held at the Good Shepherd Church, Ngovhela, a village in the Parish of Thohoyandou, on January 31 and February 1 - the actual feat day - this year. The celebrations were attended by more than 1500 people from across Southern Africa. The first Feast last year was held at the site of his beatification in Tshitanini but organisers were forced to move it to Ngovhela because of the bad condition of the road due to recent heavy rains. The celebrations were led by Bishop Joao Rodrigues of the Diocese of Tzaneen, who concelebrated with the priests of the diocese. In attendance at the Mass were Bl Benedict’s family, the faithful from Venda, government officials, and traditional and community leaders who were specially blessed by the bishop. In his homily, Bishop Joao encour-

RADIO VERITAS PROJECT TO PRESERVE DASWA ORAL HISTORY

R

adio Veritas and the Diocese of Tzaneen have embarked on a project to preserve the stories and memories of Blessed Tshimangadzo Samuel Benedict Daswa, as told by his family and contemporaries. A ‘community recording’ was done at Our Lady of Fatima parish in Shayandima, Venda with the people who lived and worked with Bl Daswa. The conversations were facilitated by a longtime friend and mentor of Bl Daswa, Mr Chris Mphaphuli. Among those who shared their stories about Bl Daswa were: • Mulimisi Daswa, brother of Bl Daswa (right) • Alfred Machaba, who was on the sport committee of the parish with Bl Daswa • Baldwin Mutshuthu, a fellow student with Bl Daswa at Vendaland Training Institute • Joseph Netshikulwe, an uncle of Bl Daswa’s • Mary Nembula, a fellow parishioner (right) • Raymond Daswa, Bl Daswa’s son (bottom right) • Alu Daswa, Bl Daswa’s nephew (bottom right) • David Muvhango, a student of Bl Daswa’s. • Elvis Nemudzudanyi, who grew up with Bl Daswa Sr Claudette Hiosan, promoter of the cause of Bl Benedict Daswa said: “These stories will be listened to, translated and be transcribed by a Blessed Daswa History committee put together by the Diocese of Tzaneen, for the benefit of anybody who is interested in the story of Blessed Benedict Daswa.” Ve r i t a s | F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

SHEPHERDS ON THE GREEN WHEN PRIESTS HAD A DAY OFF!

P

arish priests – indeed all the clergy - work hard and they pray hard.

Their vocation has many challenges and much reward. In a world that could better value the role of priests, Radio Veritas believed it was time to show them some recognition -- with love. As a result, the first Shepherds on The Green Priests Appreciation Day was held at the Benoni Country Club on Monday, November 28. The Shepherds on the Green was an initiative to give priests a day of rest, activity and fun. To take priests away from their daily work and toil through sport, indoor games and simple entertainment. It was organised by the Radio Veritas Warriors is a group of Catholic men who have volunteered their time to help Radio Veritas reach out to and evangelise men. The event proved to be an enormous success, and drew more than 200 priests from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Klerksdorp, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Rustenburg and Polokwane dioceses. “Our Priests have many challenges and much reward. In a world that could better value the role of priests, Radio Veritas chose to spoil Priests and show them some recognition -- with love,” said Mahadi Buthelezi, Marketing & Events officer at Radio Veritas “Our Priests had a day of rest, activity and fun. We envisage growing this event to include all priest in Southern Africa. The day started at 07:30am when Priests arrived for registration and were offered a full continental and health breakfast. Then the fun began. Golf, Soccer, Tennis, Bowls, Squash, Fun run, and may more fun events were held. “Snacks and refreshments were served throughout the day and then a light lunch was also served at midday. Activities ended in the afternoon, after which our special guests freshened up in the club’s facilities, preparing themselves for the prize-giving banquet. “Radio Veritas wishes to thank all the parishioners who bought tickets for their Priests and wish to encourage them to continue supporting their Shepherds. These Priests were given awards at the banquet: • Best Singing Priest – Fr Ben Mahlangu and Fr Sakhi Mofokeng • Best Preacher – Fr Similo Mngadi • Man of the Moment – Fr Peter from Jon Bosco, Fr Matseke and Fr Victor Tlholo • Best Stylish – Fr Malesela Dikgale • Priest of the Year – Fr Richard Rathari • Lifetime Award – Fr Emil Blaser • Lifetime Award – Fr Augustine Makhokolo

JUBILEE OF THE DOMINICAN ORDER

O

n 21 January 2017 the Holy Father, Pope Francis, presided over the closing Mass of the 800th Jubilee of the Dominican Order in the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. The Basilica was packed with Cardinals, Bishops and hundreds of Dominicans in their full habits. The ceremony was the culmination of celebrations throughout the world where Dominican brothers and sisters celebrated the 800th birthday of the Order, remembering 1216 when Pope Honorius III approved Order of Preachers. At that time only bishops were allowed to preach. With the approval of the Order of Preachers, this faculty of preaching was given to the followers of St. Dominic. At that time there was much moral decay and St. Dominic wanted to address that situation with the preaching of sound doctrine. Dominicans were to be grounded in their faith and knowledge of the Church and were to be devoted to study and community life and to giving to others the fruits of their contemplation. The Order flourished as Dominic sent his brothers two by two to all the corners of the world. Looking back over the history of the Order we find hundreds of Saints and sinners, but we can look back with pride at the incredible contribution that the Order has made to the Church. We also look back with pride at Saints like St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Albert the Great, St. Pius V (from his time popes have always worn white) and hundreds of other Saints like St. Martin de Porres. We at Radio Veritas join our voices in congratulating the Order of Friars Preachers on this momentous occasion. AND NOW IT’S SOUTH AFRICA’S TURN! 100 YEARS OF MINISTRY!

I

t is now the turn of the Dominicans in South Africa to celebrate the centenary of their arrival in this country!

Celebrations are planned for August 5 when a big event will take place on the East Rand. The Master of the Order, Brother Bruno Cadore, will be the guest of honour and he will officially establish the Dominicans in South Africa as a vice province, thus raising our status in the structures of the Order. More information about this celebration will be made in due course. The annual get-together of the Dominican Friars took place at La Verna, Vanderbijlpark, in the week beginning 30 January. Both Fr Emil and Fr Brian attended. During the month of January seven young Dominican Friars renewed their vows for another year. This is a great sign of hope for the future as the Order looks northwards for expansion. Several of the brothers come from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. Sadly, there are very few vocations from South Africa.

Br Bruno Cadore (centre) with Brother Stan Muyebe and a member of Br Bruno’s staff

Brief History of the Order in Southern Africa

While Dominicans had been active in various parts of Southern Africa, including South Africa, since the sixteenth century, it was only in 1917 that the Order formally established itself in this country, as the South African vicariate of the English Province However, it must be said that a group of Irish friars were active in the Cape under the leadership of Dominican Bishop Patrick Griffith, the first Catholic Bishop of Cape Town in the mid 1800s. The friars of the English vicariate were later joined by friars from Holland, with their own vicariate, and the two vicariates were united in 1968. In South Africa the Dominican friars have devoted and to a large extent still devote the major part of their efforts to parish ministry. This departure from the Dominican tradition of preaching was justified at the time of their arrival by the needs of the mission. The church had to be planted before any specialised apostolate could be considered. Ve r i t a s | F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

NEW CHAIRPERSON, MORE MEMBERS FOR RADIO VERITAS BOARD

M

rs Elizabeth Maepa has been appointed the Chairperson of the Radio Veritas Board of Trustees, following the decision by long-serving chairman, Mr Chris Busscahau to step down due to ill health.

In addition, it has been decided to increase the number of trustees on the board to eight after the number had declined to just four in recent times. Radio Veritas is pleased to announce our four new trustees - Mr Andrew Masongwa, Advocate Modise Khoza, Fr Stan Muyebe OP (provincial of the Dominicans) and Mr Chris Elfick. The other four trustees are Fr Emil Blaser, Mrs Elizabeth Maepa, Archbishop William Slattery and Mr Chris Busschau. With the new intake of trustees we found it to be appropriate to have a change of chairmanship, due to Mr Busschau’s health issues, and Mrs Maepa was appointed to this position. For several years now Chris Busschau has been chairperson and we are tremendously grateful for his leadership over the years. He has been unselfish in his commitment to Radio Veritas and our many projects. Ve r i t a s | F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

Unfortunately he has recently suffered ill health and has slowed down to some extent. He still does his programme The Melting Pot and is very involved in the redrafting of our trust deed. We value his contribution and are delighted that he can still bring a wealth of experience to his trusteeship.

NEW PRODUCTION CONSOLE FOR RADIO VERITAS

O

ver the Christmas period it was necessary for Radio Veritas to install a new console in our Studio B.

This is a very costly piece of equipment but it was necessary to have it installed. Another description of a console is a mixing desk, which is normally operated by a technical producer. It adjusts the volumes of sound and synchronises various pieces of equipment so that the end product that you hear on radio is pleasing to the ear. Our Studios are now completely up-to-date and digital. The sound signal from our Studios is sent via telephone line to our transmitter

in Meyerton where we share a 300 m high antenna with Radio Pulpit. We are fortunate to be the only community radio stations in South Africa with 50 kW transmitters. We have an enormous footprint on medium wave and can be heard like FM during the day as far away as Harrismith, Colesberg, Middleburg and even Lesotho. On DSTV audio 870 we can be heard crystal clearly anywhere in southern Africa. Even more, on our website we stream live to the whole world. Pictured above is Hein Zentgraf of Avecon, our technical supplier, installing the new desk. Our grateful thanks to Avecon for their wonderful service over the holiday period.

STRATEGY WORKSHOP

Since May 2016 the staff of radio Veritas has been taken through a strategy workshop under the direction of Mr Andrew Masongwa. This has been somewhat disruptive of our programmes on Tuesdays but we trust the time spent in reflecting together augurs well for the future. The fruits of our sessions will now be considered by our trustees - changed, agreed-upon and implemented. We are grateful to Mr Masongwa who has been so gracious and generous in sharing his expertise with us in leading us to a higher level. Ve r i t a s | F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

RADIO VERITAS NEEDS YOU!

R

adio Veritas, South Africa’s ONLY Catholic Radio Station, has become an integral and essential element of the Catholic Faith Community in South Africa. Its Mission: to entertain, inform, educate and inspire its audience, and to be a powerful means of Outreach and Evangelisation.

However, all this requires resources on a very large scale. Radio Veritas thanks its loyal and committed supporters, past and present, without whom the Station would not have achieved the status it currently has in the Catholic Community, but unfortunately, more is needed. A large proportion of the revenue received by the station is obtained from monthly debit order donors, and a constant concern at Radio Veritas is to increase the number of these monthly debit orders. Unfortunately, due to factors like our economic climate, many of our debit order donors have pulled out. This is sad. (See the tables on the opposite page.) What is interesting in the these tables is that while the number of debit order donors has decreased, the grand total has increased. Of course, we need to add to these donors those who contribute via EFT. Our total expenditure each month amounts to approximately R500 000. Our total income is generally at around R350 000. So the bottom line is that we need more regular donors. There are more than 1 million Catholics in the greater Gauteng area alone, and 4 million nation-wide. Of these, we believed that there are sufficient numbers who appreciate the work we are doing and who love their Faith sufVe r i t a s | F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

ficiently to participate in some way in this mission which has been entrusted to us. If everyone listening to Radio Veritas and/ or reading this would make a monthly donation of R100 we would really have no problem. This means 1500 donors at R100 pm or 750 donors at R200 pm. Surely this is possible if YOU do something NOW and invite someone else to do the same! And by the way, there are approximately 4,000,000 Catholics in South Africa! How sad that we can hardly find 1 500 new donors for the only Catholic radio station in South Africa! More importantly, how serious are you about the importance of evangelisation? Radio is about one of the most powerful means of evangelisation. In countries like Zambia, there are any number of local Catholic radio stations because they understand the role played by radio in this very important Mission. Whether or not you can receive the signal, our unity in faith urges us to participate in this mission of the Church which looks beyond mere provincial or diocesan boundaries. Donations, whether on a once-off basis, or monthly, are always appreciated, and now you can donate instantly online through a very safe payment gateway, Payfast. Click on the Payfast logo to go to our Donations page, where you can make a once-off donation via Payfast or download a debit order form. And think for a moment of how easily we can spend R100 or R200 on ‌..!

THE KOLPING SOCIETY FR EMIL APPOINTED PRAESES

F

r Emil Blaser of Radio Veritas is closely involved with the Kolping Society in Johannesburg and is also on the national board. He has now also been appointed as the Praeses (chaplain) to the Society in the Archdiocese of Johannesburg. Radio Veritas listeners will have become familiar with the Kolping Society through the appeals made on the radio for jumble for the society’s monthly jumble sales - the result of these appeals was reported in the previous issue of the magazine. The Kolping Society is Catholic outreach organisation and was founded by Blessed Adolph Kolping in Germany 150 years ago to accompany and encourage young apprentices. The society exists in about 60 countries and numbers about 500 000 members. Johannesburg has the oldest Kolping “family” and is now growing in Soweto, Zandspruit and Orange Farm. It is well-established in several areas of Cape Town and the Eastern Province and is now spreading to the Diocese of Kimberly. There is also an interest in Bloemfontein.

RV staff deliver jumble to the Kolping Society Ve r i t a s | F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

The headquarters of the Kolping Society in South Africa is situated in Durbanville, Cape Town. The national chaplain is Fr Christian Frantz. The national coordinator is Mrs. Judith Turner and the coordinator in Johannesburg is Mrs. Beatrix van Rooyen. The cornerstones of the Kolping Society are marriage and the family, work and occupation, society and state and culture and leisure time. The spirituality of Adolph Kolping was characterised by his deeply internalised relationship with Jesus Christ, his unshakable trust in God, his love of God and neighbour, and his love for the Church. All this furthered his great respect for the Christian family, his sensitive concern for his fellow man, treating them as partners and his social and political involvement. An intimate part of his spirituality is the social teaching of the church. In establishing Kolping families in parishes, the Society tries to equip

Radio Veritas Friends

its members with his spirituality and enable them to be of service in their local parish and beyond. One of the Kolping Society’s projects is the Work Opportunity Programme (WOP), which was developed by KSA (Kolping South Africa) to address the serious problem of unemployment amongst the young people in South Africa, in which many school-leavers become increasingly demotivated and develop low self-esteem, due to the fact that their attempts to enter the job market are unsuccessful. WOP attempts to look at the “whole person” when addressing the issue of unemployment. It is a programme of empowerment and transformation and students are able to get in touch with who they are, where they come from and what their aspirations are.

19

WOP’s OBJECTIVES are: • To provide the participant with appro-

priate education and training, which help them to become responsible, self reliant and skilled individuals. • To in-still into the participants a sense of the ethics and spirituality of work so that not only is his/her own economic situation improved, but also that of the broader community. • To encourage the participants to assist other less fortunate than themselves in their community, once they have established their own position. The WOP project relies on corporate sponsorship, and also partners with the private sector and Government Departments to provide internships and employment for its trainees. Trainees are usually referred to the programme by existing Kolping members and are usually between the ages of 18 and 35. They must be able to show that they have made an attempt to obtain gainful employment. For more information on the Kolping Society and WOP, and to find out you can become involved, visit the Kolping Johannesburg website at www.kolpingjhb.co.za.

SA CATHOLIC RESOURCES ONLINE PRODUCES UNIQUE TRI-LINGUAL PRAYER BOOK     PRAYER BOOK                                    SA Catholic Resources Online, in association with the Sodality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of the Archdiocese of Johannesburg, has published what is believed to be the first book of prayers of its kind in South African Catholic circles. The book, with the rather long and imposing title “Prayers of the Sodality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Archdiocese of Johannesburg)”, is a collection of the most common prayers in use by the Sodality, precluding the need for members to access various books and scripts for their prayers. So what, you may say, there are plenty of books of prayers out there. What makes this book unique is that it offers the prayers in THREE languages – English, Zulu and Sotho - side by side! There is even a touch of Latin – making the book not just tri-lingual, but quadri-lingual! “Our membership is mainly drawn from people speaking those languages and we are very keen to make all our members comfortable saying the prayers in the languages of their fellow members,” says Treasurer Lillian Mathe, who has master-minded the project on behalf of the Sodality. “We believe we have gone a long way towards achieving this goal with this booklet.” The book is in landscape format to more easily accommodate the three columns, and is small enough to fit into a pocket or handbag. “It has been such a pleasure to work with Frank on this project,” said Lillian. “Not only has he been the most patient person to work with, and let me tell you when working with a team with their hands in lots of other pies, it can become very testing. From a creative point of view he has been the most forthcoming with the greatest ideas and graphics that are central to the Sacred Heart Sodality - it is as if he knows what we want before we can figure out how to express it. The pleasure further extends to his responsiveness to our hair-brained requests, quick and efficient to say the least. All this he does with the calm and accommodating spirit of an angel. “I am really proud of this booklet because of its content but more so because of the beautiful look, feel and quality that Frank has created. “Thank you Frank, and may the good Lord, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, bless you abundantly for being so ‘meek and humble of heart’.’ The book may be ordered from the website of the Sacred Heart Sodality or from the SA Catholic Online Bookstore. RADIO VERITAS NEEDS YOUR PARISH INFORMATION!

PARISH DATABASE

List your Parish!

Help Radio Veritas build the most comprehensive Online Parish Directory in South Africa by listing your Parish on our Website! The directory is designed to assist travellers and those moving to new locations find their nearest Catholic Church and Sunday (or weekday) Mass. Also, you might not be able to make Mass in your own Parish on a particular Sunday, and would like to find a Parish near you that has a Mass you can attend.

How do you list your Parish? Firstly, you need to Register with Radio Veritas. Click on the illustration to go to the registration Page Why should you register? This is primarily for security reasons - we need to ensure that the person adding the entry is real and not a “bot”. When you register you will receive an email asking you to confirm your registration. Once you have registered, you should login using the username and password you created when registering. Once you have logged in, go the FEATURES MENU on the right hand side of the page and you will see an “ADD YOUR PARISH” menu item. This will take you to the Entry Form, just complete it and save! Your Parish is Entered into our Directory! To see your entry Go the “Parish Directory” Item in the Features Menu, click on that, and then you can either click on the province in which your parish is situated, or on the first letter of your town in the alphabet list.

Already have an entry and you would like to edit it?

Simply login once more, go to the Parish Directory and find your entry as above. When you get there you will see a small edit icon next to the town name (see illustration), click on that and you will be able to edit your entry.

N O W A “ SECU LA R” VE RSI O N OF SA CATHO LI C O N LI N E W RI T E-ON PU B LI SH I N G!

SA Catholic Online launched its new “secular” twin, Write-On Publishing, earlier this year and the new “baby”, designed to cater for projects with a more commercial and secular slant, has already chalked up some spectacular successes!

PUBLISHING:

1. Write-On Publishing has signed two St Francis Bay, Eastern Cape, authors and has just produced its fourth book for them. Mike Silberbauer has written two delightful little books “Secrets of a Walking Stick” and “A Cottage in St Francis Bay”, which are now available from Write-On Publishing’s website. Bartle Logie is a well-known and best-selling author of travel/history books on the Eastern Cape and its environs, and Write-On has just released his 8th book: “Tales from an Unmapped Country”. Write-On also recently re-released Bartle’s popular seventh book “Boots in the Baviaans”, after it sold out its initial print run, and his previous publisher retired. Both books are available from the Write-On Publishing Online Bookstore. 2. Just published is Fr Patrick Noonan’s book “Township God” - a fascinating insight into his more than 40 years of Ministry in the townships of the Vaal Triangle. Fr Patrick is the best-selling author of “They’re Burning the Churches”, his dramatic account of the anti-apartheid violence in those townships in the 1970s and 1980s.

3. Write-On Publishing was responsible for the production of, and will take care of the distribution of a great new murder mystery, set in Dublin, Ireland, called “A Terrible Beauty - the murder at Joyce’s Tower”. The book is by South African author V.M. Devine. Who, you might ask, is V.M. Devine? None other than a collaboration between Radio Veritas volunteer broadcaster and author of seven theological and scriptural history books, Mike Mahony, and his daughter, Valerie Gansevoort!

WEBSITES:

Write-on Publishing has also had some success with commercial websites, including: 1. Zanchieta Wildcat Farm 2. Kevin Mills Financial Services 3. Field Guide Academy of South Africa 4. Vetz at Wild 5. Burning the Churches
