THE DARKEST EVENING Samuel Reese The sun has set beyond the sea. From gale and storm one cannot flee. On crest and valley fate rely; The chance to live, man’s only plea. Beneath each breaker doubt and fear. Above, man only hopes to near A port and those he calls his own, The darkest evening of the year. The crack of wood, the crush of bone, No bearings or a mark to home. Just salty spray and roaring wind, A ship made out of creak and moan. O’er cries and wails no moon shall rise, Or lighthouse gleam to make reply. ‘Tis cloud and sadness fill the sky. No soul or body lands on shore. In empty graves the casket lower. A sea of pain now runneth o’er.

About the Composer: As a composer and arranger, Franklin has had multiple pieces premiered and recorded by Eastern New Mexico University and the University of New Mexico faculty and students, as well as renowned flautist François Minaux and professional saxophonist Ann Bradfield. His choral and band works have drawn attention from legendary composers of our time, Eric Whitacre, Donald Grantham, and David Holsinger being some of the most prominent. He has been commissioned numerous works for a wide variety of ensembles, most recently his Dramatic Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra (“Craft”), Fowl for unaccompanied flute and clarinet duet, and Nine – Concertino for Tuba and Piano.

About the Poet: Sam Reese has played the part of errant writer to many of the works of Franklin Piland. Reese hails from Silver City, NM and completed his undergraduate work at Eastern New Mexico University. An avid lover of music, literature, and the southwest., Reese currently resides in Austin, TX, where he works as an educational assistant and part-time writer.
