Introduction

The title “State the truth, state the facts. Be real, be you. means always tell the truth and just be you. Do not follow others. Be a leader. No matter what others may say, just always be you. This title relates to me because no matter what happens I am always myself even if people think of me as weird or stupid. My name is Frankieann Palomo Benavente. I am 18 years old. This writing assignment is to let you about me. It is for you to get to know me and who I am as a person. You can have any opinion you want but enclosed in this book are my thoughts and experiences that I have went through. The things that are written in this book are thoughts that I have never shared with anyone. There are personal experiences that I never have the guts to talk about to anyone. There are some things in here that I do not want anyone to repeat because I feel that it is not to be repeated. My life I have been through ups and downs like everybody else expect I keep my feelings in writing. I keep to myself.

What’s in a name?

My confirmation name is Colette. I choose Colette as my confirmation name because I relate to her and her life. Colette had lost her father when she was a young girl. I had lost my father when I was a young girl too. Colette had been through a lot in her life. She had so many problems that a young child shouldn’t have to go through. I relate to her because when I was young, I had lots of problems. For example, I was abused when I was in elementary. That is only one of the many challenges that I have faced while I was growing up. But reading about Colette and her life made me realize that I’m not the only one who had to face challenges throughout my life. Colette and I have so much in common. We both had had hard times while growing up, but we both learned to overcome those obstacles that we live through every day. So when people ask me what my confirmation name is and how do I relate to it, I am proud to say that I choose Colette because of all the challenges she faced every day, she would always be willing to help others who cry for help.

Sensory Experiences

Did you hear that sound? The sirens, the beeping of the ambulance backing up into the funeral home. Did you see that? The death of a body, the tears falling down my face. Did you smell that? The rotten odor of death, the perfume to cover up the odor. I taste in my mouth blood. I also taste in my mouth sourness. I taste in my mouth sourness because I can’t stand to see my father in his death bed. As I touch his hand, I can feel that he is ice-cold. Ice-cold like a cold blooded animal in the sea. As I touch his heart, I can no longer feel his heart beating. His soul is no longer here with us. His soul has gone to heaven and up in the sky, I see his ghost watching down on me as I shed tears as we say his rosary. As we lay him to rest, my heart beats faster and faster. I tell myself breathe in and out, in and out because my father had already taken his last breathe and I know that he doesn’t want me to take mine. I relive this moment every day I wake up. I remind myself that I live to breathe. I breathe all the breaths that my father couldn’t take. But yet I am alive today.

Metaphorical Definitions

Happiness is the smile on a child’s face. Sadness is tears rolling down a face. Anger is the yelling of disagreements. Hurt is the blood dripping down from your body. Lazy is lying down on the couch. Feared is sitting in the dark. Betrayed is seeing people talk about you behind your back. Proud is getting good grades. Inspired is looking up to your role model. Pessimistic is following others.

A Quality Personality

Respect dances through the day. You have to feel the flow. Respect talks to people. Respect tries its best to be around. Respect can be taught to other people who do not know it. Respect feels like there are many chances in life. Respect moves like there is no tomorrow. Respect is active. Respect can be everyone. Respect tells people to make the right decisions. Respect is suffering. Respect needs to survive. Respect is calling out to people. Respect can hear people. People talk about respect, but do not carry it out. Respect needs to be passed on down form one generation to the next generation.

Color Your World

Colors are all around, but what makes colors unique? People say that pink is for girls and blue is for boys, but what about the other colors where do they go to? People say that pink defines a girl, but some boys like pink. People say that blue defines a boy, but some girls like blue. A color doesn’t define a gender. A color is unique, so the bottom line is any color is for any gender. So it doesn’t matter what color you like. A color can mean different things for different people. A color can represent different feelings. For me, purple reminds me of happiness. The reason is because when I am having a good time I see a purple butterfly fly around me and that tells me that my guardian angel, my dad, watches over me. The color pink reminds me of strength. The reason is because my mom has cancer and she still has the strength to move forward with her life. So every color you see has a meaning based on people’s experience.

Room Sweet Room

My room is different from all the other rooms. My room doesn’t have a front door. It means that let other people who need a place to talk or to stay I let them in. My room is filled with scrapbooks. It means that I hold on to the good and bad memories. My room is color white. It means I have no secrets to hide. I am the same as everyone else. My room is filled with my little brothers stuffed animals. It means that I can protect him from any harm. My room has a night light. It means that I have peace at night. I constantly see an outline of a figure in my room at night. It means that I have a guardian angel, my dad, watch over me as I sleep at night. I have a slide door in the back of my room. It means that anyone or everyone is welcomed to open the door and come inside. I have toys in my room. It means that all I do on my free time is babysit my little brothers and sisters.

Symbolic Recipes

1 pinch of humor

2 cups of understanding

1 cup of patience

4 cups of love

1 cup of helpfulness A dash of forgiveness

In a bowl, mix forgiveness, love and understanding. In another bowl, mix patience and helpfulness. When you are done, pour the bowl with patience and helpfulness into the bowl of forgiveness, love and understanding. Mix it all together. When done pour your mixture into a pan. Put the pan in the oven and bake for 2 hours. When done, take out the pan and let it cool. When it’s cool sprinkle humor on the top and serve.

The Ultimate Purpose Excuse

I may be late to my English 12 class in the morning, but I have a valid excuse. Afterschool when my mother is not home, I make sure my little brother and sisters get their homework and chores done. I cook dinner. Then later on, my step dad comes home with my other brothers. I shower them. I then feed everyone. Then I put all of them to bed. But my baby brother that I sleep with likes to stay up late. He likes to have a little midnight snack. Sometimes he likes to use the bathroom at night. Every little excuse he has to stay up, I have to deal with because I am like the second mom to them. So I could stay up late and suffer being late to school because my love for my siblings is like a mother’s love that cannot be broken.

Telling Tales

My grandpa would tell me different types of stories about how he grew up and how he survived the war. It was hard back then. He suffered a very hard life. He would tell me of how he couldn’t speak Chamorro. He tells me of all the sacrifices he had to make in order to survive. He would say that life now a days is more easier because there is programs to help people who are suffering, but back then there were no programs to help you. You had to do what you have to do to survive. From his experience, he tells me to sacrifice to gain more. I feel that what he tells me is right. I believe it because every time I sacrifice something, I receive more than what I asked for.

Unfinished Sentences

I usually worry about my mom because I’m always helping her and when I’m gone who is going to help her? I feel angry when my step dad mistreats my mom because my father would abuse her and I don’t want my step dad to do the same. I’m moody when I don’t get enough sleep because I need to have the energy to get through the day. I feel angry when people mistreat other people because people should be treated equally. I’m happiest when I help my grandfather because he needs someone to help him. I feel confident when I achieve a goal because it makes me feel confident in my abilities. I feel frustrated when I don’t get math. Math is a hard subject to understand. I feel depressed when I think of my dad because I barely knew him. I am comfortable when I am with my friends and family because I can be who I am without being judged. I feel nervous in front of crowds because too many eyes are watching you and people are judgmental. I feel sentimental when I see pictures. Pictures give me memories.

Personal Symbols

A book in which you create your own memories, filled with pictures and words. When you look at it, it will be colorful. It symbolizes me because I remember good and bad memories. It tells a story. I tell a story. When I see things, then I can go on and on about that one thing. People can read me. They can see right through me, my thoughts and my actions say who I am. It says a lot about me. I can tell a story because when I move, there are certain things that I can say through body language. Things that no one can understand me. I am a very complicated scrapbook. You have to really read me carefully because I can send out mix messages.

Mysterious Place

Do you hear the sound of sirens in the air? People are sneezing and coughing everywhere. There is an alarm beeping every second. The sound of a long beep is the sound of death. The smell of rubbing alcohol and medicine is filling up the air. As we bite our tongue, our mouth is full of blood. Do you ever have the feeling of needles poking at you from every angle? An oxygen mask is placed on your face. People are crying because their loved ones will soon meet up with God. This is a fearful place for me. I have been transported in and out of this place. Nurses and doctors treat me for different symptoms. Those people could not figure out what is wrong with me, so I flew to the Philippines. This place is a place where the people know they are going to die because there are no experienced people. This place is called GMH (Guam Memorial Hospital).

Synectics

I would say that a calendar is smarter because it has the correct days, but as for a clock it can be altered. New is more fearful because you do not know anything about it, but as for old you know more about it because you had previous experience with it. A nightmare is more difficult because you have to figure out the meaning behind the nightmare and how to overcome that nightmare. Rain is more suspenseful because you do not know when it is expected. A signature has less charm because you are just acknowledging what the paper says as for an autograph it lasts for a lifetime. Literature is more trustworthy because it was written and oral passed down from generation to generation. As for history we are still figuring out the missing clues. An enemy is more useful because they know the lies of you, but not the truth behind yourself. Find is sadder because when you find someone or something, you already know what it is. But when you seek, it gives you motivation to keep moving forward. Art is happier because it tells a story and it has different types of perspectives. Lies are like valentines because you would least expect it.

A Day in the Life She has just awakened to find out that she is running late again. She has to rush to get ready for the day. She woke up late because last night she was making sure everything got done before her mother and stepfather came home. Her mother stops by the store to make sure she has something to eat and drink. She goes to school. She meets up with her best friend. They talk about how their weekend went. The bell rings, she goes to her first period math. The bell rings again, she goes to her meeting during lunch. Her club talks about upcoming events. They discuss while she eats. The bell rings, she goes to her second period office aide. She does errands, while all the other girls she has talks bad about her. But sadly she cannot do anything about it. The bell rings, break. The bell rings, third period parenting. The bell rings, she rides the bus home. She is at her grandpa’s house doing homework. Her mom picks her up. She does chores. She cooks dinner. She puts all the kids to bed. Expect her baby half-brother that sleeps with her. He makes her stay up all night. She then is exhausted only getting a couple hours of sleep. Then she awakens for the next day to begin.

In Other Words

“True friends, stab you in the front.” Oscar Wilde “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Dr. Seuss “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” Oscar Wilde “Trying is the first step towards failure.” Homer Simpson “Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today.” James Dean “In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.” Robert Frost “If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.” Mark Twain “A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you.” Elbert Hubbard “Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” Oscar Wilde “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” Oscar Wilde

Flashback

A day my biological father left when I was about five. He left without a see you later or goodbye. That day CPS (Child Protective Services) came and took us away. It was hard to leave the home of my father, because we had made so many memories in that house. I was crying. I was sad. I was scared. I did not know what was going on. It is good to relive this memory of my biological father leaving because it is a memory that haunts me day to day. It is a memory that I want to leave behind because I do not want to remember my father for that memory, I want to remember him for who he is. This is a day that I want to forget. This is a day that changed my life. It is a day that changed who I am. It changed my way of thinking.

Remembering the things Present

Twenty years from now, I want to remember the new person that I have become. The new friends I have made. The mistakes I have made. What I have done for the church. The promises I have made. The day I stood up to my bully. The day I learned I have a voice. I became a leader. How in help my grandfather. How I learned respect. How I stood up for what I believe in. How I learned about disabilities and how it can affect people in their way of thinking.

As time goes Bye-Bye

I say good bye, good bye to my past. The good and bad memories I had made with my father. My past has made me become who I am today. It shaped me to become a better person. Each day I make-up and say that I will learn from my parent’s mistakes. I say good bye to my father. Even though he has not been in my life for so long, I want to say good bye. He has taught me to be a better person. He has taught me to never give up hope. He abused me when I was younger, but I learn to stop the chain from continuing on and on again. I want to say good bye to the people that have mistreated me. They may have taken advantage of me and who I am, but it doesn’t stop me from helping those in need. When people ask me for help, it feels good to help them. But helping others has made me realize that people will take advantage of your kindness. I want to say good bye to bullying. I have suffered bullying for so long that I am finally free from it.

My List of List People who have influenced me: Kisha Borja-Quicho’cho, Josh Palomo, Quinton Mendiola, Tasha Palomo, Zachary Palomo, and Leah Delgado. Places that make me happy: George Washington High School, Guam, Gun Beach, Grandpa’s House, Pigo Cemetery, and Mongmong Church. Places I would like to go: Capitol Hill, Statue of Liberty, Senate House, Lincoln Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, and Arlington Cemetery. Thing in people in which I like: honesty, trust, respect, helpfulness, kindness, and integrity. Things in people in which I dislike: lying, cheat, dishonesty, disrespect, hardheaded, and arrogant. Things that worry me: grades, my mom, my friends, graduation, my sister, and what I’m going to do after I graduate. Things I would like to know how to do: make friends, cook, be a better writer, talk to people, socialize, not worry. Things that have moved me: Articles, Quotes, Poems, Stories, Notes, and News. Ideas that intrigue me: science, art, literature, music, and poems. My personal favorite: senior prom, slam poetry, talent showcase, “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry, creative writing, and poems.

Cheer Yourself Up!

When I feel bad or I just don’t feel up to do anything, I listen to music. I smile and laugh just hide the pain away. I tend to listen to other people’s problems to know that I am not the only one drowning in pain. When I hear other people’s problems, it gives me an opening to solve my own. I tend to write stories or poems of how I feel. I tend not to share it because I have deep thoughts that will make people worry. I talk to people. When I talk to people, I try to forget all my worries in my life. The way I deal with things is different from other people. I tend to hold in all my feelings. I don’t like to share how I feel with other people because they tend to judge me. They might say that I am crazy or that I have to deal with it because that is how life is. There are a lot of ways I cheer myself up. I like to dance when no one is around. It makes me feel free to express myself. When I have that freedom to express myself, it makes me feel that I am a unique person.

Metamorphosis

I used to be shy, but now I am open. Cheerleading has made me be more open because you have to know who you are cheering for. I used to be always crying, but now I have hope. I was always depressed never having hope, I never thought what if? I used to be afraid, but now I am brave. I was afraid of the world and what it had to offer, but now I am ready to take all the challenges and opportunities that are given to me. I used to be dependent, but now I am independent. I used to be a pillow, but now I am a rock. I used to let others take advantage of me, but now I am careful of whom I trust. I used to be a closed door, but now I am an open door. I have no secrets to hide. Anything that you want to know about me, I will tell you.

Picture This

Two sisters: Jaymie and Janet having a slumber party. Artist: Jaymie Lee Palomo Harris, Janet Lee Palomo Harris, and Photo Booth on MacBook Pro.

Response: I enjoy the polka dotted background. The background gives it a little touch to the scene. The two sisters’ smiles are similar. That proves that they are truly sisters. They too look alike. They are in their pajamas and that proves that they had a slumber party.

Look Who I Look Up To

Helen Keller was blind and death although she was not born that way. She caught an illness at 18 months called the brain fever. She then could not communicate. Her parents had to go out of their way to find a way to communicate with their daughter. Helen learned a lot of ways to communicate with others by the time she got into college. Anne Sullivan taught Helen Keller. Helen was an inspiration because she overcame any obstacles that came across her to learn just like any other child. She was an inspiration to the disabled. She proved that anyone could do anything if they just concentrate. She had a hard time concentrating and learning at first because she was not focused. There were people that will always doubt her. They would always constantly put her done. People would always say that she cannot be successful in life.

Remembering the Child

When my family and I are at parties, there will be music on. Whatever the beat is, I would start to dance. Ever since then people always want me to dance at parties. I would dance like there is no tomorrow. The way to stop me to dance is when they say I am going home. Sometimes, I would give a fuss and say give me a few more minutes. I need to dance. Dancing was a way to express how I feel because I was an inverted child. I would also eat a lot and my family would call me skinny bone Jones because I would eat but not gain any weight. It was an embarrassing name to hold but I didn’t hold it for that long because I had gained weight over the years.

One Medium Sized Suitcase

If I had one medium sized suitcase, I would bring my scrapbook. I would love to make memories. New and old memories are always welcomed. But I can’t make memories without a camera. I would take pictures day by day and make good and bad memories last a lifetime. I would want to take my clothes because I don’t want to be naked (Laugh out loud). I would take my watch. I would want to know what time it is. Sometimes, time flies by so fast that you don’t feel it. I would take my phone to communicate to my family and friends. When I leave, I don’t want to not know anybody. Family and friends are important to me. I need to know my way around so therefore, I need to communicate.

The Perfect Present

I would want self-control because without self-control I wouldn’t know how to control my thoughts and feelings. Self-control is important to me because it reflects who I am as a person. When having self-control, I will learn to be a better person. I would know my limits as a person. I would know what is good and bad for me. I want patience. It is hard for me to be patient. But if I am patient then I would not have made a lot of mistakes. I would learn to understand things the slower I learn. Rushing into things is not good because what if you don’t like it. There are a lot of reasons why I want patients, but the most important reason why I want patience is to learn and understand the aspects of things that people tend to overlook because they want things done now.

Memorable Event

This event was Father Duenas Memorial School Junior and Senior Prom. I went April 12, 2014. I went with my friend Isabel Flores from Academy of Our Lady of Guam. She told me that her friend from Father Duenas Memorial School doesn’t have a date. So she set us up to go together. I meet up with her at the prom. We danced all night. My date was Bruce, but I forgot how to spell his last name. He was a gentleman. The night was special because it was my first and last prom that I ever went to.

How to…

This is how to make or break a friendship. The first thing you want to do is make a friend. You want to get to know them a little better. You want to get to know the little details about them that people don’t know about them. Once you accomplished that then here comes the next step. All you have to do is to start testing them. Now you might say well how do you do that? It is simple. All you have to do is tell them a little white lie about you, but make that white lie interesting to where it tempts them to tell, but then after you tell them tell them not to say anything. When you start to hear rumors about that lie, tell the people that heard it that it is not true. Then tell your friend that you don’t trust them because they told your secret. The next step is that if your friend says apologizes face to face, then they are a good friend. But if they don’t apologize then that person just wanted to take advantage of you. When that happens, you must be careful about who you make friends with.

Always say never

I would never go back to a funeral home. A funeral home has brought nothing back but bad memories. When my father died, he was presented in a casket. That day was terrifying. I was afraid to see him. He looked peaceful sleeping, but I felt anger around him. There is nothing that anyone can do to make me go back there. The only thing that will let me go back there is if one of my family members die, which I hope to God that doesn’t happen any time soon. I would never go in an ambulance because I had been transported in and out of the ambulance multiple times. I feel scared when I am in the ambulance. Sometimes, I feel like I am going to die in the ambulance because I can feel death around me. I know that that sounds crazy, but it is true. I feel strong energy around me that it scares me sometimes.

Are you hungry?

My favorite meal is dinner. I like it when my Auntie Sharon cooks her Kudon Pika. Her Kudon Pika is the best. It is not to hot and not to cold, it is just right the way she makes it. The way it smells, it is indescribable. The taste is spicy. The good kind of spicy, that spicy that is just right. She cooks it differently from other people. She cooks it with lemon. She makes it the way the southern people do because well little do you know she is from the south. I watch her cook it. Someday, I hope to cook it. I want to learn how to cook it. There are different ways to cook. It depends on your style of cooking. Some people like making their Kudon Pika hot. They like to put a lot of Donne’ in their cooking. Some people only like to put a little Donne’ in their cooking.

Where I am from?

I am from Guam. Respect is the key. The main thing about Guam is people have to respect the culture and respect their elders. But people now days, people do not follow the saying because they are influenced by the American culture. Since the Spanish took over the island, the language was not reserved. My ancestors were too afraid to speak the language. They mixed up Spanish words with Chamorro words therefore creating a whole new language. Our culture as well as our language has changed overtime. But it is up to us to make it stay alive. The saying that, “karma will come back around is true because whatever you do to others will come back to you. It also means that you have to treat others they way that you want them to treat you.

Annual Report

A year ago, I was always crying. I always felt depressed. I would always think negatively. I would always let people take advantage of me. I would never stand up for myself. I would always think of the bad things. I would always think about what others would think of me. I would always worry about things I should not worry about. Today, I stand up for myself. I speak up. I am more careful of who takes advantage of me. I do not cry anymore. I am happier than before. I would now think of the bright side of things. I don’t care for what people say. People can say anything they want, but it won’t affect me. I would just ignore it and tell people that it’s not true. I have changed. I think differently. I do not worry about others and what they are doing. I only worry about what I’m going to do with my future.

Ekphrasis

Me Myself and I: You may tell me that I will not live another day. But I live as long as I breathe. I breathe as long as my heart beats. I can be myself as long as I live today. Me myself and I, We are one as long as we have fun. We say that you may say that we’ll not live another day, But you say that because you’re afraid. You’re afraid that tomorrow will be the last breath you take. Take that last breathe. For we are waiting for the day you die.

Lesson I Learned After I Was Too Late

I learned that people would betray you. They will befriend you. They will use you because you are too gullible. They take advantage of you. They will use your abilities against you. They will use your weakness as leverage. They will try to break you down. People get a kick out of seeing people miserable. I learned that you have to stand up for yourself. You have to speak up. You should not let others walk all over you. I learned that you should not worry about other people and what they say hurt you. If you know that what they say is not true, then you should just ignore it. Because if you pay attention to it, then they will know that it is true. I learned that people would always talk about you wherever you go and that you have to learn to deal with it. I would always let what people say bother me all the time.

The Door

When I walk out that door, I want to know more than what I did not know before. I want to graduate. I want to be smarter than before. I know that I have learned so much. I want to be a better person. I want to be a better writer than I am right now. When I walk out that door, I want to be a hero. I want to help others. I want to be that person that everybody looks up to as a role model. I want to be the hero that people know. I want to be able to help save lives of others who cannot save their own lives. The hero I want to be is a nurse or a doctor. I want to be the person that gives hope to others who do not see hope in their lives. When I walk out that door, I don’t want to be the person that does not succeed in life. I don’t want to be the person that everyone doubts. I do not want to be the person that everybody says will have no future. I don’t want to be a bum.

Advice to the Young

For the young, I want you to learn from your mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes, but it’s up to you to not make the same mistake and learn from your mistakes. It is up to you make it better. I want you to be the better person. No matter what the situation is, I want you to know to do the right thing. Just walk away from fights. I want you to know right from wrong. I want you to know that there will come times where you have to make a decision right on the spot. Just know that you have to think of the consequences and the options that you have. I want you to always listen to your conscience. If there is that little voice in your head telling you that you will get in trouble, listen to it! Do not ignore that little voice! That little voice needs to be heard for a reason. I want you to make the right decisions. There will people that will influence you, but it is all up to you to make the right decision. People will tell you lies that what they do is the “in thing” that everybody is doing it. But the truth is that not everybody is doing it. There are a few that are not doing it because they know that it is wrong.

Who Am I?

I am a sister. I help my siblings with everyday things they do. I am a listener. I listen to other people’s problems. I give them advice. I am a helper. I am always there when people need me to help them. I never tell people I can’t help them unless it is a big job that I can’t handle myself. I am a friend. People can trust me. They can depend on me. When they need help, I’m always there for them. I am worker. I love to work. I am a writer. I feel free to write how I feel and what I think. I am a cheerleader. I cheer for the wins and the losses. I cheer for the good and the bad. I am a counselor. I help people with their problems. I will do everything I can to help them in the right way. I am a leader. I do not follow others with what they do. I do things in my own way and people tend to follow me. I am independent. I like to work alone. My work is well done when I work alone.

Epilogue

This person is unique. The way she talks about her dad’s funeral proves that she loves him. She cares for her family. There are things that she needs to resolve with her dad, but she obviously didn’t have the guts to speak up. She takes care of her siblings as if she is the second mother in the house. She doesn’t care if it affects her grades as long as her siblings know that she is there for them. She will never turn her back on her family. A person she cares about comes first in her life. She will help the people that are in need of help. She is always willing to give a hand. She will go out of her way to help others. She is compassionate towards others. She is always there for her friends. There are times where her generosity gets the best of her. She is to kind. People end up taking advantage of her. She has a hard time opening up to people about what’s on her mind. She believes that the only way for her to move with her life and her emotions is to write how she feels. She feels that she can’t trust anyone. Her title “State the facts, state the truth. Be real, be you” is what she lives by. She believes that honesty will get you very far in life.
