Nelson Mandela, the African hero Nelson Mandela was born in 1918. He served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 and was the first man to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but he only spent 27 years in prison. After being released, he dedicated himself to get a fair democracy in South Africa, and then he received the Nobel Peace Prize and many other awards. Nelson was a role model for many people. In 1942 he became a lawyer, and in 1944 he joined the African National Congress (ANC), a movement against the oppression of black South Africans. Mandela was a leader of the League of Youth Congress due to his Policy of rational segregation (the apartheid). It was for this reason that in 1962, he with over 8000 people were arrested and taken to Johannesburg where Mandela only spent 27 years in jail. While Nelson was in prison he and others performed hard labor in a lime quarry. Prison conditions were very demanding. Mandela belonged to the lowest classification; he was allowed only one visit and a letter every six months. While in prison Mandela studied by correspondence the external program at the University of London, obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Laws. In February 1990 Nelson was released and began to lead his political campaign in negotiations for a multiracial democracy in South Africa, which was achieved in 1994 with the first democratic elections by universal suffrage. Mandela won the elections and was president from 1994 to 1999. Nelson Mandela received over 250 international awards for the next four decades, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. Nelson Mandela never gave up on this commitment to democracy, equality and education. He fought for a life that symbolizes the triumph of the human spirit over the inhumanity of men towards others. Nelson Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of all South Africans who suffered and sacrificed much to achieve peace in our land. By Francia Valverde

Over

the years we have noticed how they have been modernizing the media in our community and the world, before these systems were simple and often not within easy reach, while we now have quick access to all media communication. Many years ago the letters were the media most used by people as they used them to send notes to family members, for notifications, etc. In the other hand, there was a very prestigious institution which relied heavily on the country for communication between people. Going elapsing time, the man invented more effective and better value communication devices for citizens, as in the case of television, internet, radio, etc. These media allowed greater ease and compliance for individuals and not in the same means you can get any information and entertainment. The youth of these days use internet, which is the most used medium. It’s the basis of information and education, resulting in advantages because it allows a wider knowledge about the subject. And quick as needed, it has a disadvantage. Since it is an easy access tool, many times it affects the people's interest towards lectures, spending unnecessary time and making distance from our loved ones.

The media we have today, if used in the best way, is very beneficial to our lives. By contrast, the abuse of these means brings problems to our lives like a poor use of which can affect our personal and social life. By Rebeca MariĂąo

Many movements which promote philosophies of nonviolence or pacifism have adopted the methods of nonviolent action as an effective way to achieve social or political goals; pacifism resistance is the practice of goal achieving through symbolic protest, without using violence. Martin L king Jr fought with this philosophy for many years and in this document I will give you a brief review about his movements and what was a Martin L kind Jr’s goal. The nonviolence philosophy was introduced into civil rights movement by activist Martin L King Jr, however, he adopted from Indian Mahatma Gandhi. King studied Gandhi’s approach and applied his beliefs in America’s struggle for equal rights. The application of this philosophy took more strength than violence, and King hoped he would catch the attention of society to the blatant discrimination of Africa-America. His main goal was to have peace for both whites and blacks. He wanted everyone no matter what color to get along and live among each other instead of being segregated. His advice was not to judge one to others by the color of their skin but by the contents of their characters. Martin Luther King has made a huge impact on the world today. Not matter what happened his commitment to effecting social justice was unconditional with his followers. His success as a leader was essential to gain popularity around United States. Finally Martin Luther King Jr was a great man who worked for racial equality and civil right by many years in the United States of America. Now freedom lifestyle and move without problem around the world. I would like to invite you to read his speech… I have a dream. By Luis Alvaro Mora

News, the ugly truth Nowadays, the entire world has been surrounded by news that involves good and bad news. This fact is a result of a lot of media and communication methods that impacted our lives on a daily basis. It is very simple to get access to this kind of information; unfortunately this new environment built a complex atmosphere. In order to understand the detail on how we are affected by this information, we will describe the top three disadvantages of this new environment. First, the news mostly includes bad news. 8 of 10 news reports in the newspapers and television include murders, accidents, price’s increase, etc. In summary those bad news affect people’s mood and this is one of the hypothesis that we can find in a lot of investigations regarding these topics. If one man is constantly checking news, this man we will be impacted by one “disagreeable environment” where some elements like hope and faith are changed for murders and crime, affecting directly the mood. Secondly, the time invested to follow up news in the radio, television, newspaper and web, should be easily invested in other tasks. Frequently we are claiming that we have not enough time to complete our daily work or household tasks and this is the result of difficulties in time balance. For example, reading the entire newspaper takes at least 20 minutes and the news on TV 60 minutes. This makes up an average of almost 4% average of the total daily hours. And finally, the news sources are limited in this country because is a small country for this reason the news are repetitive. You can try it with the TV news. If you watch the news on channel “X” and then change to channel “Y”, 90% of the news and headlines will be exactly the same. There is no additional value of spending time watching, reading or listening the same event over and over. In summary, the news are important because they describe significant information required in our lives, but we need to get a balance so that the news do not affect us negatively.

Media has become a very important part of our lives. Media does not only provide us education but also information about our surroundings. Roles played by media in our life are: awareness, education, technical information, business information, entertainment, etc. It also has changed in almost every way. It is considered the best way to know what is happening in our world today. Newspaper, magazine, radio, television and internet are the different types of media. It greatly affects our lives because media has the power to change our thoughts. Media could be positive or negative, depending on the way that we use it. Sometimes media can make people do very violent things because of what they see on T.V or the games they play. So children are more aggressive, less trusting and more violent towards people because of these things. This means that they will start bringing weapons into schools and around streets for example. Also in the past murders, accidents and deaths were just written to tell you what happened but nowadays it is in the news to attract the attention of you. So that means people who read the news all the time will become more scared and will not trust people as much. This makes the world a scarier place to them than it already is. But in a good way media is the best way to spread information and news from one part of the world to the other. There are education programs to help people to learn anything through internet, television and radio. Children can improve their skills and education by watching these programs because it is easy to learn stuff that is interesting. Advertisements help us to know the different products people are trying to sell and we can easily make our choices according to what is said. In conclusion media is part of our life; we need to live with it. The world has been changed pretty much and we are all looking forward to take more new media to make life much easier but I believe people should think about how media can affect and/or harm our lives.
