REBRANDING TO ADD CLARITY The rebranding was motivated by a measurable need to more clearly communicate the company’s unique position in today’s marketplace. “‘Franciscan’ means something characterized by the life, teachings, and values of St. Francis of Assisi,” explains Franciscan Media’s CEO and publisher, Fr. Daniel Kroger, O.F.M. “Our independent research showed that St. Francis not only is remarkably well-known, but that those who know of the saint respect and relate well to him—perhaps more than any other figure in the Catholic Church today.”

IMPRINT CHANGES What does this mean for Franciscan Media’s two popular book imprints, St. Anthony Messenger Press and Servant Books? St. Anthony Messenger Press’s new books are now Franciscan Media books. Your backlist favorites also will become Franciscan Media books as they are reprinted. These books will continue to serve those who want inspiration and information for their spiritual journey. Servant Books will continue to offer inspirational and educational books that celebrate the Catholic faith and enable people to grow in their relationship with God.

NEW LOGO The company’s changes include a renewed corporate identity for Franciscan Media, with a fresh logo and the Franciscan-influenced tagline, “Live in love. Grow in faith.”

Prayer Our Deepest Longing Ronald Rolheiser ith simple, down-toearth language, Rolheiser illustrates the importance of prayer and offers insights on how to pray, using examples from real life, Scripture, and contemporary writers. He delves into the places we fear to go with our issues about prayer, encouraging us with gentle kindness and words of hope and inspiration. This is a book for all believers, whether their faith is solidly rooted in Catholicism, wavering between the Christianity of childhood and nonparticipatory faith as an adult, or not sure what they believe. It addresses topics that identify our culture, such as narcissism, pragmatism, efficiency, and selfgratification, which work against a healthy spiritual life. Finally, the book takes us to a place of contact and comfort, in relationship not only with God but with our true selves as well.

R

eminiscent of the spirituality fostered by Richard Rohr and other contemporary mystics, Joe McHugh writes out of a tradition infused with the basics of Jesuit and Trappist theology, yet fully planted in the day-to-day workings of the contemporary world. He does not shy away from the secular culture in seeking God, but incorporates each element of daily life into a contemplative practice. McHugh makes ample use of stories to show, rather than tell, about our search for the living God. Building on his work as a consultant and spiritual director, McHugh guides readers on a spiritual journey on which they encounter God in the hidden and mundane workings of their lives. He pushes us to go deeper, and writes with an edginess that keeps us engaged and hungering for more.

For Love of Animals Christian Ethics, Consistent Action Charles Camosy

F Release: October 2013 REL028000 RELIGION / Ethics REL067070 RELIGION / Christian Theology / Ethics REL010000 RELIGION / Christianity / Catholic Paper • 144 pages • 5 ½ x 8 ½ Item #B36662 ISBN 978-1-61636-662-9 $15.99

or Love of Animals is an honest and thoughtful look at our responsibilities as Christians in the way we treat animals. Many Christians misunderstand both history and their own tradition in thinking about animals. They are joined by many secular thinkers, who wish to paint Christianity as responsible for how the Western world has failed to lead the charge in considering issues of animal rights. The book connects readers to the moral framework of the arguments for the ethical treatment of animals: nonviolence, inclusion of the vulnerable, and the consistent ethic of life. It goes beyond the liberal/conservative lines that often shape the discussion. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter and suggestions for further reading round out the usefulness of this important work.

Key selling points • Covers a complex issue with examples, Scripture passages, questions for discussion, and suggestions for further reading • Challenges readers to evaluate their own behavior in light of Christian faith • Touches on issues that affect our physical and spiritual well-being, and the well-being of animals

Saint Why I Should Be Canonized Right Away Lino Rulli

L

ino’s first book, Sinner, was full of stories—honest, humorous, bold, poignant— illustrating why he deserved that title. This new book takes another approach, another angle: why Lino is on his way to sainthood. Often hilarious, but always with a point, Saint focuses on God’s grace and shows how even a sinner like Lino can look forward to being a saint. As Lino himself puts it: “Instead of stories of small triumphs and many failures, this is a book to encourage you in your own triumphs, to realize you might not be as big a sinner as you think, and that with God's help, you might just become a saint.” Picking up where Sinner left off, Saint points the way to our end goals—holiness and sainthood—and does so in a way that entertains as well as inspires.

n this engrossing collection of stories and anecdotes, Fr. Roderick shares how he became a “new media missionary.” Focusing on the importance of personal connection (an essential ingredient of new media), he uncovers the exciting possibilities of using all forms of media to successfully accomplish the mission Jesus gave us: to evangelize the world. Spanning the globe, each chapter contains illustrations of using new media as a way to reach out to others. Some examples: • How Pope Benedict XVI got his iPod • Reaching 50,000 Harry Potter fans without waving a magic wand • Why gaming can be good for the soul • How to deal with online atheists • The Mass and mass media • How you, too, can become a new media missionary Fr. Roderick’s stories introduce a young generation to an experience of God at work in his Church and in individual lives. This book reveals the experiences of one of today’s leading Catholic new media entrepreneurs.

FR. RODERICK VONHÖGEN studied social communications in Rome and has traveled the world to initiate countless Catholic new media projects focused on education and evangelization. A producer, blogger, speaker, and media host, Fr. Roderick is the founder and CEO of Star Quest Production Network (SQPN), a multimedia organization that uses the media for religious information, evangelization, catechesis, formation, and education. Fr. Roderick lives in Amersfoort, The Netherlands.

hy did the author pick the popes you’ll meet in the pages of this book? Why not Gregory I, whom many would call the greatest pope of all time? Why not Leo X, who was pope at the beginning of the Protestant revolt? Why not Leo XIII, who boldly stood up for the rights of workers? Every pope is by definition a remarkable man. But the popes whose stories you’ll read here were chosen because they reveal how the papacy developed. They show us how Christ kept his promise to his bride, the Church, not only in her health but also in her sickness. The great popes advanced our understanding of Christian doctrine. But even more remarkable, the worst popes could do nothing to damage the teaching of the Church. That’s why, even in its darkest moments, the story of the papacy is a story of triumph. And that’s why it’s worth knowing these twelve popes.

ho was St. Joseph? Was he just a passive, incidental figure in the drama of salvation? On the contrary, in every way that Jesus needed a father, St. Joseph was there for him. And how overwhelming it must have been for Joseph to be asked to stand in the Father’s place! No man has ever been asked to do so in such an unthinkable way. Caster’s book provides a unique, indepth presentation of Joseph from the perspective of the evangelical counsels and the theological and cardinal virtues. Each section explains one of these counsels or virtues and then shows how Joseph models them for us.

What if we were hearing it for the first time, like the first-century Jews? These events certainly would not be taken for granted—they would signal something new: the dawning of the long-awaited Messiah. This Advent, put yourself in that ancient Jewish world. Christ sent his apostles into the whole world to make disciples of all nations, and by virtue of our baptism, we too are called to be apostles on this same mission. But how do we start? How can we accomplish this in today’s culture? In this book, Patrick shares his own time-tested methodology for teaching Catholics how to prepare themselves to:

other Teresa is known for her radiant smile and the joy of Christ that she brought to all she met, even in the most challenging circumstances. These daily stories and meditations in her own words point to the secret of living in that joy: simplicity, humble surrender to Jesus, thankfulness, and, above all, a heart filled with God’s love. These keys will unlock the gift of joy in every thirsting heart.

Sample: “Make an effort to radiate joy, which is the fruit of the Spirit and a characteristic mark of the kingdom of God. God is joy. We have no reason to be unhappy. Christ, wanting to share his joy with the disciples, prayed that ‘my joy be in you and your joy be complete.’ Jesus must have radiated joy and you should do the same, in your eyes, attitude, the way you walk, the way you listen, and your whole being.” —Mother Teresa
