Dear Friends and Alumni,

• April 2014

The future of UNL Campus Recreation is looking brighter as we progress from our YES 2 Better Rec Centers campaign to facility construction. With our new Outdoor Adventures Center opening in March of 2014, our renovated Strength and Conditioning Room in August of 2014 and our new East Recreation Facility opening in 2015, it truly is an exciting time for all of us in Lincoln.

This issue of Rec Review highlights some of the plans for these new structures as well as photos of our progress as we continue our commitment to excellence. We are very sensitive to keeping the costs down for our students. While they have funded most of the projects, we ask for your help in bringing the buildings to life. We have donation opportunities from $150 up to naming rates for the facilities. Please consider a gift to the NU Foundation Campus Recreation Development Fund for your year-end giving.

• June 2014

We hope you will visit us if your travels bring you to Lincoln. We are looking forward to a large alumni celebration during our 20th annual Regional Flag Football Tournament November 7–9. Rumor has it, we may even play some alumni flag football that weekend. So dust off your shoes and plan to join us. We hope that you have an enjoyable and safe holiday season with family and friends, and celebrate with us as we look forward to what is new on the horizon for UNL Campus Rec.

East Campus Rec Center Transformation Begins Demolition started in November for the East Campus Rec Center construction project. After 87 years, the former East Campus Activities Building will receive a complete interior renovation and expansions on the west, south and east sides. Expansions will more than double the building’s current square footage. Opening of the new facility will be in Spring 2015.

In preparation of the new East Rec Center construction taking place next year, Campus Rec has renovated the Fleming Field Annex Building (FFAB) as a temporary home for students and faculty to continue their recreation.

The new fitness center located at 33rd and Leighton Avenue provides a more contemporary feel to students and members. Featuring more than 20 cardio machines and 15 strength machines/racks, it is a major step forward in the new developments at East Campus.

Construction of the new Outdoor Adventures Center is forging ahead! After groundbreaking earlier this year, the main structure has been erected and both outdoor and indoor climbing areas are nearly complete.

Outdoor Adventures Center Nears Completion Building Scheduled to Open April 2014

The new facility will house a 42-foot climbing gym, bouldering walls, a 24/7 outdoor bouldering wall, the UNL Gear & Bike Shop, as well as meeting and classroom space. The Outdoor Adventures Center is now the largest climbing facility in Nebraska and students can expect to use the brand new facility starting April 2014. Over 900 pieces of equipment will be available for rent, including canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, skis, tents, bikes and more. Public climbing memberships will start at $36/month. General public are also able to host birthday parties or corporate events inside the facility.
