The Temple of Hiero The Greek king Hiero II of Syracuse (269-216BC) built this enormous altar, which was large enough to sacrifice 450 bulls to Zeus, the Liberator. Although it is the largest surviving altar from Greek antiquity, today only the base remains of the immense temple-like structure, which was surrounded by porticoes.
