October, 2013

October 2013 Dear Friends – September was a monumental month in the worship life of our denomination! Any idea why? It was the month our new Presbyterian hymnal Glory to God was released from the printing press and began arriving in pews across the PC(USA)! In order to make this hymnal a reality, many years and countless hours of research and prayer have been faithfully spent by the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song compiling hymns and songs relevant to our reformed tradition and complementary to the way we as Presbyterians worship. In fact, several persons from our own congregation, including Pat and Gwen Bacon as well as Doris Estes and myself, were asked to participate in some of the research being conducted by the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song. All of this hard work has led to the compilation of a wonderful new Presbyterian hymnal, and as a result, the Worship Team of First Presbyterian Church, led by Emily Clem and Randi Harbin, is happy to announce that they have chosen to introduce this new hymnal to our own pew racks beginning this fall! So be looking forward to the unveiling of Glory to God at our church in October as together we sing for joy the wondrous things that God has done, is doing, and will continue to do for us as Children of God! Yours in Christ’s service –

David P.S. Opportunities to purchase copies of Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal in honor and/or memory of persons important in your life will be available soon. Stay tuned for more information.

THANK YOU . . . Hello First Presbyterian Family and friends, Below is the obituary that Ben Dowell masterfully wrote for our brother Kendall. Speaking on behalf of our family, we are all grateful for the thoughts, prayers and support that have been coming our way. With love, Mike and the rest of us... Kendall Burgess Dowell, 47, passed away at his home in Birmingham on August 27, 2013. Kendall was a truly dynamic personality and made and indelible impression on all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his mother, Betty Dowell of Athens; sister Cindy Newlin (FL), her children David Newlin (FL) and Heather and Wintrhop Allen (SC); brothers Michael Dowell (Pat Gooch) (VA); Jonathan Dowell (TX); Steve and Lana Dowell, and their children Jessica and Elizabeth (IN); Ben Dowell (Mony DeMarco) ( GA); Nathan and Danielle Dowell, their children Perry and Alex (AL); and many beloved extended family members and dear friends. Kendall was preceeded in death earlier this year by his father H.B. “Mike” Dowell of Athens. Kendall graduated from The Alabama School of Fine Arts in 1985 and lived in Charlotte, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Memphis, and Athens before returning to Birmingham last year. He loved his work with numerous theatre companies in roles ranging from behind the scenes to principal characters, and was never happier than when performing. He often volunteered his time to work with the homeless, enjoyed visiting with the elderly in assisted lilving facilities, and would gladly give his last dollar to someone he felt needed it worse than he — something he did many times. Services for Kendall will be held on Friday, October 4 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Athens. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to either the charity of one’s choice, The Alabama School of Fine Arts, or by writing Congress in support of better access to mental health services for all Americans.
