And you, also, are correct. Constructed in 1890, old El Toro’s one-room grammar school at First and Olive served the community until 1914, when a new two-room schoolhouse supplanted it. At that point, Juan and Antoinette Gless – originally from Europe’s Basque country, but by now longestablished residents of the Saddleback Valley – purchased the retired schoolhouse, had it transported across an adjacent field to the other side of El Toro Road and transformed it into St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. For about the next five decades, the former grammar school served Catholic residents living closer to El Toro than to San Juan Capistrano’s mission church. In time, St. Anthony’s congregation moved to a newer, larger sanctuary and the building, as the signage indicates, became the meeting place for an Assemblies of God congregation. Eventually, however, the

structure was left vacant, its windows and doors boarded up. Vandalism followed. Nearby, construction on housing tracts was underway, and zoning laws were going into effect. The old schoolhouse seemed slated for demolition. Happily, the newly formed Saddleback Area Historical Society stepped in and, in tandem with Orange County’s plans for establishing its first historical park, negotiated the 1976 transfer of the building to what is now Heritage Hill Historical Park. The building gradually and lovingly was restored to its original schoolhouse look. Alas, however, the Community Hall – also shown in the photo and, unlike the schoolhouse, original to the site – didn’t fare as well. Though ably constructed in 1901, the building’s eightsided design was deemed too complicated to be preserved, and not long after the school/church was rescued, the hall was dismantled and sold for scrap.

Recognize the building pictured here with the cross on it? How about the street? For anyone familiar with the city of Lake Forest’s earliest history – when it went by the name of El Toro – the JANET answer to WHITCOMB the latter CONTRIBUTING is easy COLUMNIST enough: It’s the north side of El Toro Road, just east of the railroad tracks, about 50 years ago. As for the building with the cross, that’s a bit of a trick question. The sign says “Assembly of God,” but longtime residents of the El Toro/Lake Forest area might better remember it as St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. However, those who’ve visited Lake Forest’s Heritage Hill Historical Park probably are saying, “Isn’t that El Toro’s one-room schoolhouse?”
