We’re looking at lots of tournaments coming in, lots of folks staying in hotels, coming in, spending money in our community, so there’s a big tourism aspect that comes along with this,” Adame said. After a ribbon cutting ceremony joined by television reporter Pooja Lodhia as part of ABC13’s weeklong ABC13+ series about Alvin that coincided with the opening, it was time to hit the links- chain links, that is, as disc golf baskets are designed with chains to catch the disc. “This project was a long time coming and we’re very happy to see it here,” Alvin-Manvel Chamber of Commerce ambassador Lindsey Vaughan said. Bobby Rabalais drove all the way from Cypress on Wednesday to attend the opening ceremonies and play a round on the new course. Rabalais has played disc golf for 20 years and said he has never played on a course with dedicated lights, making Alvin’s course “extremely special.” Alvin native Richard Summers drove from his home of San Antonio for the opening of the course. Summers has played disc golf for over 40 years and is one of the oldest professional disc golfers in Texas. He recalled the first disc golf course ever in Alvin at Alvin High School in the 1970s. “We painted stripes on trees and poles and we’d have to hit between them. It’s called an objective course.
