hen Gov. Charles “Chuck” Robb signed an oversize replica of the legislative bill creating the Virginia Horse Center, he told the crowd assembled in Cameron Hall, “I would predict that within a few short years, when people talk about horses and about Lexington, they’ll be talking about Lexington, Va., and not about that other Lexington.” It’s been nearly 36 years since the governor made that bold statement on a rainy and cold day in March, but thanks to the persistence of people like Otis Mead, who was the chairman of both the local and statewide horse center committees, and H.E. “Buddy” Derrick, who led the campaign to raise $1.5 million for the center, today the Virginia Horse Center is the international facility for equestrian competition that its founders only dreamed it would be. The idea for a horse center in Virginia goes back as far as 1969 when the commission of the Industry of Agriculture’s Horse Industry Task Force recognized the need and interest in establishing a horse center. In 1980, a resolution was introduced and passed by the General Assembly creating a joint legislative subcommittee to study the feasibility of establishing a state horse center. A continuing resolution passed in 1981. 8

An emphasis was placed on finding statedowned lands that could be used for a horse center. By 1984 the subcommittee unanimously agreed to recommend the site proposed by the Rockbridge Committee for the Virginia Horse Center. Today the Virginia Horse Center sits on 600 rolling acres of land. In addition to the 14 show rings and 8 horse barns, the facility boasts a 4000-seat arena — the Anderson Coliseum, where spectators can see not just horse shows, but also a number of different events from rodeos to BMX bike races. There are also almost 5 miles of trails used by both horses and hikers going through the woods and down to the Maury River. Almost on a daily basis, Lexington area citizens come to the Horse Center to just walk on the grounds and in the Coliseum. Walkers say four laps of the arena concourse equals roughly one mile. All told, the Virginia Horse Center plays host to 100 events annually which draw thousands of spectators. The global pandemic has not stalled business at the Horse Center. In fact, according to CEO Glenn Petty, the facility is doing better than ever. “We are doing really well,” Petty said. “Our shows, after being shut down for a while, are much larger than before.”

Petty likens the horse center to a hotel, with the horse stalls serving as rented rooms. “Prior to the pandemic, we had 44,000 stall nights as a record. In 2021 we had 54,777.” The slow winter months of January and February allows the center time to refurbish the facilities. Most of the barns have clay floors that need routine maintenance and now some of the horse stalls have rubber mats that are much easier on the horse’s hooves. Some minor construction has been going on in the early months of 2022, including renovations of the restrooms in the coliseum and fencing additions to one outdoor show ring. New jump trailers have been added for the hunter-jumper shows. All told, the Virginia Horse Center has eight trailers for jumps available. “By the middle of March, we are up and running again,” Petty said. Every weekend is completely booked for this year. The recent Blue Ridge Nationals BMX bike event drew 1,139 professional and amateur riders from 39 states. In January the Star City Canine Training Club and Dog Owners Training Club of Lynchburg had its AKC dog agility show to the horse center and again showed in February. The 9,000 sf Appomattox Mezzanine is located upstairs in the front of Anderson Coliseum hosts banquets seating over 300, wedding receptions, meetings and other events. It comes complete with sound system, PPT Projector and screen, and kitchen and elevator access. There are many lodging options offered nearby, but for those with an outdoor spirit, there are camp sites available. Each of the 95 camp sites is equipped with access to water and electricity. Priority is given to those participating in events at the horse center, but those just seeking a spot to camp out may call the stable office to reserve a space. There are also private shower facilities available in the East Complex. Most events are free, with some exceptions, and concessions are available inside the Anderson Coliseum. The grill is run by the Horse Center and there is also a food

truck court featuring local venders and an ice cream truck serving up sweet treats year round. The Virginia Horse Center employs roughly 40 full time employees and with seasonal workers, the head count is just under 50. Each Sunday night the stalls are cleaned after busy weekend events so that they will be ready for the next occupant. For many years the idea of a bustling horse park in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley

nation. With all the information that is available on the internet, people can use their personal criteria for a relocation destination. Sometimes those “top ten” lists that pop up on social media can drive interest in the Rockbridge area. We’ve been featured in quite a few over the past years.

You stop in Lexington for lunch and enjoy a great meal, with friendly servers. You take some time to walk the brick sidewalks of downtown, and stop in several of the shops — more friendly people. You walk past a shady downtown park, and there are musicians playing, or perhaps an art show. You notice the gray stones in the sidewalks that recognize notable people from the town’s history.

Other arrivals came back to the Rockbridge area having been students at one of the local colleges. They fell in love with the area when they were in school, and decided to retire here.

You see signs for the Chessie Trail and notice the Maury River, with some passing canoeists. You see bicycles on the streets. You also see the blue roofs of the Virginia Horse Center. And, you realize what a magnificent place to live this could be.

The pandemic brought some folks to the area also, over the past couple of years. With broadband access growing rapidly here, and expanding into more remote parts of Rockbridge County, this area has become a haven for those wanting to get out of larger metropolitan areas and able to work remotely. Besides fast internet, our area offers ground, air and even rail options for those needing to travel for work or pleasure.

This is not an unlikely scenario. More and more, people discover the charms of Rockbridge County, Buena Vista and Lexington just by accident. They stop for a meal while passing through, or a child enrolls at one of the area colleges. Or, they have friends or family who move here and they come to visit.

Entrepreneurs are attracted to Rockbridge for some of the reasons above, and because of the college towns, with their population of young people and educated faculty and staff. New businesses, such as a microbrewery, a fitness studio, and restaurants have all been opened here recently by newcomers or people returning to the area.

People discover Rockbridge in a variety of ways. It may like our friend who just happened to stumble on our area by accident. Or it may be the result of a methodical search of locations across the

hen you think of education, do you think K-12 schooling for kids and teens? Do you think higher education like colleges and technical schools. Why not think of education in terms of what it means to the individual, and by extension, what an educated person means to a community. Learning is a process that occurs naturally with humans. Education can be though of as directed learning, a more formal process by which people acquire knowledge, skills and insights. Traditional education ends with high school or college graduation, but in today’s rapidly changing world, education needs to evolve to a more career spanning modality. Buena Vista will be the site of a new agriculture technology center in a recently closed factory building run by The Advancement Foundation (TAF), a non-profit in western Virginia that fosters entrepreneurship and small business development. Late in 2021, the foundation received a $550,000 state grant to develop the center in the former Mundet-Hermetite building in Buena Vista. It is one of 13 economic development projects throughout Virginia that are receiving a total of more than $3.6 million in Growth and Opportunity for Virginia (GO Virginia) grants to support initiatives that are supporting workforce development in key industries, fostering business and improving infrastructure.

The grant, said TAF President Annette Patterson, “will help us advance the region’s agriculture industry through value-added product development, manufacturing and business acceleration service.” The $550, 000, which she said would be received over the next 12 to 24 months, “will be utilized to ignite entrepreneurial activity around value-added product development, scaling activities and manufacturing. This funding will provide the center with high level expertise in the areas of value-added product development, manufacturing and business acceleration. Funding for equipment, programming and region-wide conferences will distinguish the center as a regional asset while infusing talent retention and attraction that will complement Buena Vista’s community revitalization efforts.” According to the governor’s press release, TAF and partners are creating “a multi-use facility featuring a business incubator and classrooms, agriculture and food tech labs, and a small-scale manufacturing space, as well as a processing and product development space.” TAF acquired the building in September and has begun renovating it with the assistance of students from Southern Virginia University and Dabney S. Lancaster Community. Faculty from SVU and Virginia Military Institute, as well as local government economic development officials, have been involved in planning for the ag tech center.

“The center is open and will set up in-person or virtual meetings with all interested producers, value added product developers, those interested in scaling production/ manufacturing or commercializing their products,” said Patterson. “The center is also interested in helping existing businesses in main street manufacturing such as roasters, oils, hemp products, distillers, artisans and more. Implicit in this announcement and description of purpose is that a big part of what this center will do is to provide specific training and expertise to area food and agriculture business owners and managers. This is what career-long learning looks like — practical, directed and applicable. Besides developing the Ag Tech center in Buena Vista, The Advancement Foundation runs The Gauntlet, a ten-week business development program and competition that connects entrepreneurs with business experts, mentors and helps them find resources to support start-ups and fledging businesses. Over $300,000 in cash and in-kind awards are given. In addition, low interest loans, matching grants and industry expertise are available to Gauntlet participants. he Rockbridge area has for years been an attractive for retirees — both for people relocating, but also encouraging of long-time residents to remain here in their retirement years. This area has a history of older residents remaining active in local organizations and interests. Kendal at Lexington, a Life Plan (CCRC) community, affiliated with one of twelve Kendal senior living communities located throughout the United States, has been instrumental in building on the existing community of active, engaged seniors here in Rockbridge.

Locals that decide to stay in the area after retirement do so for a variety of reasons. For many, family ties, long-standing friendships and generational roots make moving away in retirement unthinkable. For others, it’s the same things that bring newcomers here — a safe, small town atmosphere, with the added attraction of the cultural and intellectual stimulation provided by our colleges. Many newcomer retirees, particularly from the northeast US, want a milder climate with shorter winters, but want a location with four distinct seasons. Many of those who relocate here in retirement remain active physically and mentally. Some may hardly be considered retirees, having retired from direct employment but continuing to consult and do contract work on their own schedule. Many retirees are active walkers, cyclists, tennis players or golfers. A large number go regularly to the Y, take yoga classes or use the fitness center at their community. Many are active in civic organizations such as Rotary and Ruritan clubs. Retirees serve on the boards of local charities, and some have even run for public office in the county and cities. The experience here has been that retirees — both those who are long-time residents, and those who have retired here from other places, add greatly to the social fabric of Rockbridge. 18

Kendal at Lexington began with a local group that formed in 1995 as the Lexington Retirement Community, Inc. That group saw a need for a senior living community that offered a local alternative to moving away; a decision that faced many older area residents not wanting to maintain their home or burden family with their care needs. The LRC quickly identified the Kendal Corporation as the best fit to partner with them to develop and manage the facility. The donation of 85 acres of beautiful farmland and the historic Sunnyside home by the Bartenstein family provided much of the initial capital needed to make Kendal at Lexington a reality. Kendal’s model of continuing care means that new residents can start off in independent living — in apartments or detached cottages and, if needed, progress to assisted living, or nursing care in the Borden Center. Kendal residents pay an entry fee, which essentially buys them into the community, and then monthly fees that vary depending on the type of apartment or cottage they choose. One big draw is meals served in Kendal’s dining room. Housekeeping, maintenance and utilities are also included. Since opening in 2000 with Phase 1, consisting of 26 cottages, 40 apartments and 24 assisted living studio, Kendal has grown, adding the Borden Center in 2002 with skilled nursing. Two more phases have added more cottages and apartments (now a total of 95 cottages and 55 apartments), and a fitness center with swimming pool, exercise class room and fitness equipment/strength training room. An expanded dining room was opened in 2021 to accommodate the larger population of residents. Most recently, the Borden Nursing Center and Webster Assisted living Center weres enlarged and renovated to better assist a person-centered model of care. The Borden Center also serves members of the greater Rockbridge area community for those using Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care insurance or private pay.

Kendal isn’t the only retirement facility in the Rockbridge area offering a Lifecare continuum of of care. Blue Ridge Christian Homes, in the Raphine area, got its start after Melvin Bender moved to Rockbridge County in 2000 to build a small, assisted living facility. Blue Ridge Christian Homes, in full sight of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the beautiful Beulah Land Campus, off of U.S. 11 in Raphine was the result. Shortly after the assisted living facility was established, Bender noticed there was a need for independent living housing. Bender and his nephew, Shawn Wampler, were soon building homes not only on the Beulah Land campus but also elsewhere throughout Rockbridge and Augusta counties. Blue Ridge Christian Homes provides various options for living in its assisted living community. Those looking to maintain an independent lifestyle can lease one of the homes located on the property. Here, residents are always close to staff and receive the help they need while remaining in their own house For residents who need a higher level of care, BRCH offers spacious and comfortable rooms located within the campus’s main building. BRCH is an assisted living facility that operates on the principles of growth and involvement, providing a welcoming environment at the family farm in Raphine. It offers an open, spacious setting where seniors can contribute to the farm’s operations if they are able and want to, and can relax in the beautiful countryside Rockbridge County. Bender and his construction company, Seed & Harvest, are preparing to undertake a 30-acre expansion of Blue Ridge Christian Homes and the Beulah Land campus that is to include more assisted living, independent living and single-family housing. So, whether it’s family and friends, a college connection, the natural beauty of our mountains and valleys, our vibrant towns or a good fit in a retirement community, the Rockbridge area has great attractions as a place to retire. As Marketwatch.com, a Dow Jones & Co. subsidiary, wrote in July, 2021 about retiring in Lexington, “Lexington makes a lot of charming town lists. A Scotch-Irish Symphony

he traditions of music run deep in the Rockbridge area, with our church choirs, choral societies and local jam sessions being present-day manifestations of our musical heritage. The News-Gazette is full of items on upcoming music events, whether concerts, live music in local restaurants, vineyards and breweries, festivals, carnivals and churches. And, our music appreciation runs from those who just enjoy listening, to those talented individuals who play and sing. Two particular music traditions have played a big role in the cultural landscape of this area for many years. The Rockbridge area has been fortunate to have had access to fine live classical music performances for decades. Southern Appalachian/bluegrass music has also been a part of our collective musical world, with its roots in the songs and melodies from the Scotch-Irish pioneers of the mid-1700s. The colleges have been a major factor in bringing music to the area, both in the form of concerts by professional groups and of student musicians, both choral and instrumental. The creation of the Rockbridge Concert-Theater Series in 1945 by Mary Monroe Penick and others added to the offerings of the schools, bringing noted national and internationally-known performers to Rockbridge presenting classical music, jazz, dance and theater.

One of the more memorable performers over the years in the RCTS season was the annual appearance of the National Symphony Orchestra, from Washington, DC. Miss Penick, who was the long-time music director at Lexington Presbyterian Church, was friends with Howard Mitchell, the National Symphony’s conductor. The symphony would give an evening concert, often in VMI’s Cocke Hall, but in the afternoon, would present a program geared toward school-age children in VMI’s field house. Children would be bussed in from all the schools in the area for this special performance. For weeks in advance of the concert, school music teachers would teach about the parts of the orchestra, and talk about the pieces that would be on the program to their classes. For many students, this was their first exposure to a full symphony orchestra. While the area has many who love to listen to classical music, we also have quite a number who love playing it. This shared love came together in the mid-1970s with the creation of a local symphony orchestra. This group of local amateur musicians has performed in local churches, public schools auditoriums, college performance spaces and even outdoors. The current iteration of the orchestra, known today as the Rockbridge Symphony, dates from a reorganization in 1999. Prior to this, the orchestra had gone through a number of names, but the concept remains the same — some 40 local non-professional players, with the occasional professional musician brought in for key positions. The band room at Maury River Middle School has been the orchestra’s rehearsal space and ‘home’ for most of that time.

The director for thirteen years until 2020 was Mark Taylor, who also conducted the Southern Virginia University Orchestra. The current artistic director and conductor is Yi-Ping Chen, who is an instructor in conducting in the Music department at James Madison University. In a typical season, the symphony presents three concerts. Since the beginning of Covid, concerts have been mostly held outdoors, in Hopkins Green and in Wells Fargo Bank plaza. The positive reception by the public of the outdoor concerts led to a decision to perform a free concert in Hopkins Green annually. The orchestra has also reached out to other community performing organizations, and, for some concerts, incorporated dancers doing interpretations to the music. While classical orchestral music has a long time place in the area’s cultural life, the traditions of string music on the fiddle, guitar and banjo have been a part of our mountains and valleys for centuries. Bluegrass music is a modern development, dating from the 1940s, of the traditional southern Appalachian music, but its popularity has revived an interest in the old music of the Scotch-Irish settlers. Richard Smith, an authority on bluegrass music, writes in his book Bluegrass; An Informal Guide, that unlike mainstream country music, bluegrass is traditionally played on acoustic stringed instruments. Bluegrass music is really based on mountain or old-time music, which is possibly the oldest form of American traditional music. It developed along with various North American folk dances, such as square dancing, clogging, and buck dancing. Mountain or old-time music has its roots in traditional English, Scottish, and Irish ballads and dance tunes and in traditional African-American blues and jazz.

The term ‘bluegrass music’ derives from the group Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, who, along with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, took elements of old-time music and adapted it by adding features that characterize what we know as bluegrass music, including fast tempos, sophisticated vocal harmony arrangements, and impressive instrumental proficiency demonstrated in solos on the mandolin, banjo, and fiddle. Rockbridge County is at the center of traditional mountain and bluegrass music. Over the years, many notable musicians, mostly amateur but some professionals, have lived and played music here. Such names as Guy Carawan, Rooster Ruley and Mike Seeger are well-known to mountain and bluegrass aficionados. For those liking the style of music, there’s no shortage of places and events to hear it. Many of the performances at Lexington’s Lime Kiln Theater have a distinctively bluegrass flavor. Buena Vista’s Glen Maury Park hosts a number of music festivals featuring bluegrass and mountain music, including Guy’s Jam, the Maury River Fiddlers’ Convention and the Mountain Music Festival. So, if you enjoy live music, Rockbridge will have you humming and tapping your toes.

The Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization (RARO) deserves mention for the role it plays in organizing sports leagues and other fitness programs, primarily for youth up to age 18. From baseball and softball, football, basketball, soccer, and wrestling to cheerleading and running, RARO offers something that can appeal to about any kid. RARO leagues are competitive but emphasize developing skills and teaching teamwork.

“ In the 45 years since Fixx’s book, we’ve come to see that walking, biking, yoga, aerobics, and weight training, among many activities, can and should be a part of people’s regular schedule. The benefits of regular exercise as an integral part of overall health and wellness are welldocumented today. A 2007 study by the University of Georgia found that an improved ability to focus, higher confidence and an enhanced ability to follow through on tasks were directly attributed to improved fitness levels. Our young people, for the most, are more active by nature than older folks, especially those under driving age. They tend to walk and ride bicycles when they go to visit friends and, at least in the towns, can walk to school. Physical education classes in school and school sports programs. Our towns are very walkable, with pleasant neighborhoods for an evening stroll and walking trails like the Woods Creek Trail in Lexington or the River Walk Trail in Buena Vista and the trails in Glen Maury Park. For those of us older folks, the Rockbridge area is fortunate to have a variety of resources for getting and staying physically fit. For walking and biking, we have the Chessie Nature Trail, linking East Lexington with Buena Vista. For more adventurous hikers, the Appalachian Trail traverses the eastern border of Rockbridge County. Swimming in the Maury River at Goshen Pass is a time-honored tradition, as is canoeing and kayaking in the Maury and James Rivers. The Lexington Golf and Country Club (LGCC) offers a challenging golf course with beautiful views. LGCC has a strong membership, but play is open to the public. Tennis courts are also available at Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista, Rockbridge County High School, Washington and Lee University, Lexington Golf and Country Club and Lake Robertson.

For years, the only gyms available in the area were at the colleges, and generally reserved for faculty, staff and students. With the opening of the Rockbridge YMCA in 2003, everyone in the area had access to fitness and yoga classes, weight training and aerobic machines. It encourages remaining active to maintain strength. The area has a number of fitness businesses — yoga and pilates studios, general fitness studios and weight training facilities. Just in downtown Lexington, you’ll find Center of Gravity Yoga and Pilates, Electric Pilates, Rockbridge Barbell and fLex Fitness. White’s Travel Center at Raphine has a gym within their complex called Raphine Fitness that’s open 24 hours a day for both locals and the travelling public.

he Rockbridge Area YMCA is much more than a gym. It is a place to achieve, belong and connect. The three focus areas are healthy living, youth development and social responsibility which you will find ingrained in all programs/services through the YMCA.

Personal Training packages are also available at the YMCA for an additional fee. One big amenity for family memberships are access to Stay & Play for children, discounts on other programs and access to YMCA 360 (a virtual platform filled with healthy living and youth development content).

Our local YMCA currently serves of 1,700 members that consists of all ages; individuals, families, seniors and youth. One out of every five members is a part of their financial assistance program. The Y offers access to 56 group fitness classes weekly, both in person and virtual. Some of these classes include Les Mills programming, Spin, Dance, Active Older Adults, Chair Yoga, Total Body Sculpt and more. There are specialty classes available for an addition fee to include; bootcamps, H.I.I.T and TRX.

The YMCA is making a community impact by offering various programming outside of the building; mobile wellness, youth sports (soccer, basketball, t-ball and gymnastics) for children ages 3-6 years of age, a ten-week summer camp for youth ages 5-12, Y After School programs that currently serves 60+ children a week, and Kids Night Out programming twice a month. The YMCA even opened up a brand-new preschool during the pandemic that has served 3 to-4 year olds.

In addition, all Y members have access to the cardio room, circuit room, strength areas and community room. The offer a Fit Start program (included with membership) to any members wanting more support and how to use equipment in the facility.

The local Y opened in 2003 in space off Walker Street in Summit Square Shopping Center, after a successful local fundraising effort. Within a few years, membership had grown to the extent that the Y needed to expand. The former International Foods

space next to Tractor Supply became available, and in 2010, the Rockbridge Area Y relocated. In 2016, the Rockbridge Y merged with the YMCA of the Roanoke Valley, now called the YMCA of Virginia’s Blue Ridge. Our local YMCA continues to grow and expand to meet the needs of our community.

Dowdell grew up in Arlington and, after graduating from VMI, completed an internship with the VMI football team before starting his career in strength and conditioning. He worked for Old Dominion University’s NCAA athletics teams, and professional sports franchises Washington Nationals baseball team and DC United soccer team. Center of Gravity Yoga and Pilates

enter of Gravity Yoga and Pilates owner Wendy Orrison describes her motivation to open the study by saying on the studio’s website: “Our intention is to create a home for practitioners of yoga and the related movement arts in a convenient downtown Lexington location.” The studio’s offerings include the holistic practice of yoga, the empowering strength of pilates, and the healing energy of tai chi. Some classes are more of a physical workout while others are more focused on mental and physical relaxation. The name, Center of Gravity, derives from a concept common to yoga, pilates, and tai chi, and refers to a center point in the body. Located upstairs at 124 South Main Street in Lexington, Center of Gravity was started on Washington Street, also in an upstairs space, by Orrison and a partner no longer in the business. Her current business partners are Kristin McCabe and Karen Stanley. All three instruct at the studio, along with a number of other teachers. Center of Gravity’s website describes the various disciplines taught at the studio thusly:

Yoga builds muscular strength. Yoga opens our joints and lengthens our muscles, improving flexibility. We gain aerobic capacity and endurance. Yoga re-educates the body in a whole body workout that can happen on many levels of physical intensity, from gentle to challenging. Tai chi is a centuries-old Chinese martial art that descends from qigong. Tai chi has its roots in martial arts, but is also practiced for its health benefits, both physical and mental. Friends of Rockbridge Swimming

riends of Rockbridge Swimming, (FOR Swimming) is a local non-profit that was started in 2005 to provide a yearround facility for swimming and aquatics. Known as the ‘bubble pool’, the facility was envisioned to provide a place for youth, high school, and adult swim teams, as well as fitness and therapy swimming for all Rockbridge County citizens. 15 years later, and renamed The Rockbridge Aquatics Center, the facility has more than lived up to the board’s initial vision. Some of the center’s programs include nine weekly Aquatic exercise classes for people of all ages and fitness levels, Learn to Swim programs for the area schools, group and private swim lessons, USA youth swim team – Rockbridge STORM, RCHS swim team, fitness lap swimming, lifeguard training and open/family swimming.

The Rockbridge Aquatics Center has been a marvelous example of what a dedicated group of people along with support from local governments can do to meet the needs of a small community. FOR Swimming looks forward to expanding its community service with additions that would further improve the health and well being of our community. This summer FOR Swimming will manage the Lexington Municipal Pool adjacent to the Rockbridge Aquatics Center. While the bubble pool is open year-round, the outdoor municipal pool is open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. he Chamber of Commerce Serving Lexington, Buena Vista and Rockbridge County traces its origins back almost a century. In January, 1923, a group of over 100 business and civic leaders met at the county courthouse to organize the Lexington Chamber of Commerce.

Later, the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce was started, and in 2008, the two organizations merged to form the Chamber than now represents and serves all three jurisdictions in the Rockbridge area. The Chamber supports local businesses and organizations through promotions, training opportunities and networking. It acts as an information source for businesses and individuals considering relocating to the area. In the area of government affairs, it works in concert with other Chambers supporting legislation that benefits the business climate hereand organizes local candidate forums every year.
