Dont worry, be happy
Jason Ellis Family Photo
By Jason Ellis 2020 has been a year of uncertainty and tension. In March, Coronavirus hit and schools, businesses, and churches shut down. Then, on May 25th, George Floyd was killed. An already tense, and stressed nation seemed to explode. Riots in the streets, racial tension, people angry and divided. Then you have the political season on top of all that. It was and is a difficult, challenging time. There is plenty to worry about. Maybe you are consumed with worry. Are my kids safe? Will we get sick. Will people hate me just because I disagree with them? Worry is a trust issue. You worry because you do not trust that God is in control of your situation. You worry He will fail you in your time of need. In fact, if you really struggle with worry, you might feel like not worrying is reckless. Worrying gives you a sense of control. It helps you feel like you’re doing something. To you, let me repeat the words of Jesus: Luke 12:25-26 “Who of you by worrying can add
a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” Some of you can’t even picture what you’d do with your mental energy if all of a sudden, you didn’t worry! Jesus has an answer for that, too: Mt. 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness--Worry never trusts - and trust never worries. You cannot worry and trust God at the same time. Since trust forces out worry, you can be cured of worry by placing your complete trust in all mighty, all powerful God.” I am coming to you not as an expert, but as a fellow traveler who may just be one step ahead in the journey, and I’ve recognized my worry is a trust issue. He’s in control, and it’s a good thing because I can’t control it. And when I try, I make it worse. So the answer is really coming to him, and saying, Lord, I trust you. I don’t have answers. I don’t even have an idea. I just need you to be in control.
Let us be the ones that help your loved ones recover and live the life that we all want!

An Open Letter from Mexia Mayor Geary Smith
So far the year 2020 has been filled with big challenges for the citizens of Mexia. From the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic and related concerns and issues, to the fire destruction at Gibbs Memorial Library, we are living in a period of great disruption and hardships, but also of great fortitude, inspiration and courage of our citizens. It is truly a privilege for me to be the Mayor of such a great city, a dynamic City Council and City Manager, Police and Fire Departments and all the supporting staff. In the face of tremendous challenges, we have made some great decisions in making Mexia a better city to live now and for future generations. The following are three big projects that are on the horizon for Mexia in the future: The Mexia Sport Complex, The Mexia Aquatic Center and the re-opening of the Gibbs Memorial Library. Also, the City Council is working closely with EDC, Chamber of Commerce and other partnerships in bringing new industries, more community involvement and events and improving the

infra-structure and overall improvement of the city. In building a better Mexia, is not achieved in a single big step, but sometimes in countless of small actions and decisions. It can be a small act of kindness and respect for another person you meet on the street. It can be a small conversation between friends and neighbors. It can be a wave and support of our police officers, city crews and EMS workers. Anyone driving through downtown lately can see the wonderful changes and renovations of many of the buildings. It brings a smile to my face when I drive around, when I can see where once old and empty buildings stood, are now being used for office space, new business and rentals. And, the new changes for Mexia are continuing to happen all around the city. Finally, I want to thank each citizen of Mexia for your continued support and efforts during this unprecedented time. I am very confident that, working together, our city can and will overcome any crisis and be a better place to live for all. Sincerely, Geary Smith, Mayor
Library moves back home The temporary home of Gibbs Memorial Library will permanently close on Oct. 3 and 4:00 p.m. Join the Gibbs Memorial Library family for the GRAND RE-OPENING & RIBBON CUTTING of Gibbs Memorial Library, 305 E. Rusk St., Mexia at 11:30 a.m. November 4.

Larry and Kathleen Brown – Mr. & Mrs. Mistletoe – 2019
17th Annual Merry Christmas Market and Festival December 3-5 The Merry Christmas Market and Festival is always held the first weekend of December. December 3-5, 2020 is the planned time for our event to happen. Everyone looks forward to this event as it kicks off the Christmas Season in our area.

Holiday music can be heard as the Mexia High School Blackcat Band begins to march down Commerce Street. The Mexia Police Department graciously leads our Christmas Parade of Lights and Mr. and Mrs. Mistletoe are the Grand Marshalls each year. Mr. and Mrs. Mistletoe are chosen as a local couple who have been an instrumental part of Mexia’s economic growth and leaders of the community and have been married to each other for 50 years or more. Normally, the Mexia High School Blackcat Band comes on stage to perform in the Mexia Civic Center after the parade for the enjoyment of the Christmas Vendors and Shoppers. Normally the Rotary Club serves up delicious bowls of Christmas Chili as a fund raiser for the community. We will have to cross our fingers that these important events get to happen this year – 2020 for our wonderful city. Please see the Merry Christmas Festival Schedule on the back cover of the Mexia Magazine and make plans to join us if all works out. And of course we will be enforcing the COVID-19 Health Protocol of masks and distancing. Merry Christmas Everyone!

Mexia’s Story in a Stocking The “Story in a Stocking” program began in Mexia in 1994 by the Gibbs Memorial Library Board. The Library Board members were Caroline Forsythe, Betty Reese, Albert Nabors and Mary Shelby. The “Story in a Stocking” books were originally given to underprivileged children through the “Toy for Tots” program. The next year the books were distributed to underprivileged children thru the school district. In 1996, the books were given to every student in PreK – 1st grade. Donations continued to come in for this worthy program. Marking the 4th year of the project, donations had been so generous that Coolidge ISD was included in the program. The newly organized Friends of the Library group took over the project in1999. The Friends began taking the books to the schools themselves and going to the classrooms and reading to the children prior to the distribution of the books. This was a huge success with the students. This was a huge success with the students. The Friends of the Library Board members are: ShienDee Pullman, Librarian & Secretary, Jean Vincent, President, Betty Hawkins, Treasurer, and members Ann Waldrum and Gayle Beene. The project has grown each year in donations. Your donations to the project may be mailed to : Gibbs Memorial Library, 305 East Rusk, Mexia, Texas 76667.
