Hello& welcome! Welcome to Hillsborough! One of the best parts about being mayor of our town is how much it is loved. Whether voiced by people who live or work here, or have only visited, the phrase “I LOVE Hillsborough!” is one I hear a lot. We are a small town with a big personality. Find fabulous food and drink right around the corner at any of our local restaurants - many serving up local produce, meats and cheeses on their menus and all committed to being an integral part of the community. Whether you’re seeking an affordable place to feed the family or world class cuisine for a date night, Hillsborough has a place for you. When Hillsborough says “shop local”, we mean it, because we have so

much to offer. Our local farmers markets bring in produce and other goods from family run farms just outside of town. Our local retailers specialize in items tailored for our community and its visitors, and the works of local artists are absolutely everywhere. You will find the work of visual artists on display in our galleries and public spaces, local authors in our bookstores, and local musicians over our airways and playing in the pubs. You’ll find wonderful walks, hiking and connection to nature on our network of trails and parks, especially on Riverwalk along the Eno River, part of the Mountains to Sea Trail. And you’ll find history, from the pre-colonial indigenous peoples who made their home here, to

our nation’s colonial beginnings, to upheaval and necessary change during the civil rights era, to NASACAR’s beginnings, this lineage is evident in the landscape and architecture all around us. There are excellent schools; welcoming places of worship; a wonderful public library, a community college campus and a hospital - you’ll find them all here. Most importantly, we are a town of friendly neighborhoods and people who love our community. Stop by, we’ll be happy to show you around. We know you’ll love it too!

Mayor Jenn Weaver

Margaret Lane Art Gallery puts Hillsborough’s arts community first Dale eDwarDs/News

or a town as small as Hillsborough, there is an outsized number of choices for lovers of fine arts. The picturesque historic downtown area is home to more than half a dozen art studios and galleries featuring a wide range of artwork from local, regional and national artists. The Margaret Lane Art Gallery is just half a block off Churton Street in what was at one time, a residence. It’s owners, Mary and David Knox, officially opened the gallery in January of 2017, although it had a soft opening in October of 2016. The 1930’s home was converted into an 1,800-square-foot art space that is packed full with artwork from, at any given time, 30 local artists. “There’s so much talent in this area. We have had no problem filling our walls,” said Mary Knox. “Our problem is we need more space.” Unlike many other galleries with wide-open rooms, the Margaret Lane Art Gallery has several rooms that visitors can wander through. The large windows provide bright, welcoming light during the day. Paintings, photographs, drawings and sculptures are easily seen and experienced. Information about each piece of art, the artist and price is clearly displayed.

There is also an upstairs room with more artwork. The collection is eclectic and family friendly. There’s even an area for children to engage in doing art. The sheer number of works of art is clear evidence to the popularity of the Margaret Lane Art Gallery. “We have many more artists that rotate artwork in throughout the year,” Mary Knox said. Among the most striking of the collection are photographs by David Knox, who said he’s been taking pictures as long as he can remember. “I got my first camera when I was 12-years-old,” he said. David Knox said he prints all of his photographs with printers at the gallery. The Margaret Lane Art Gallery offers printing services — including printing to canvas. In addition to providing space for artists to display their talents, the gallery holds or participates in as many as 30 events throughout the year, including the Friday Art Walks. Other shows can have themes. “We choose a theme and we send that information out to artists,” Mary Knox said. “We ask people

to stretch their imagination. So, for example, for our ‘Guiding Light Show,’ David is featuring his lighthouse photographs. We encourage people to use their interpretation of a guiding light. Some people will use optimism, fantasy guiding lights or spiritual. We like to be able to present a range of views and a range of styles.” The gallery will, from time to time, hold single-artist shows. Art workshops are regularly held at the Margaret Lane Art Gallery. The owners believe it helps to build community among the artists and art lovers. “We communicate with the other galleries,” said Mary Knox. “We hope there will be more collaborative opportunities. We send people their way and they send people our way. It’s not a competitive situation; it’s a synergistic situation. We all have a distinctive feel and focus for each of the galleries. It’s not repetitious.” The Margaret Lane Art Gallery has plans in the works to expand to a second space on Corbin Street just outside of the downtown area. It’s plan is to move

workshops and some of the printers out of the gallery to free up space for more artwork. Ultimately, the owners want to expand workshops, such as its collage workshop where the gallery supplies all the materials for people to come and do their thing. Framing workshops could also be a part of the second location. More workshops geared to children could be on the horizon, along with partnerships with homeschool networks. The Margaret Lane Art Gallery is open for visitors Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is open Fridays from noon to 8 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Schedules for workshops, shows and meet-the-artist programs are updated on the gallery’s Facebook page.

f there’s one thing Orange County has an abundance of, it’s farms. There are hundreds of them with fields of crops that lay out before you for miles. Farming is hard work and, for most of them, there’s not much to look at or do, other than work. And then there’s the Smith’s Family Fun Farm in Hillsborough. Begun in the early 1980’s as a Christmas tree farm, Smith’s Family Fun Farm is quickly becoming a destination place for local families seeking an inexpensive, friendly and memorable holiday activity. In 2014, Jeff and Dawn Denson, who run the farm, added a pumpkin patch. The farm also has play areas for kids, places for photos and picnic tables for family gatherings. “It has grown tremendously,” said Jeff Denson, who is a farrier when he’s not helping run the farm. “When me and my grandfather were doing trees, we might have 200 families come out during the holidays. Now, we have probably 1,000 families come out for trees. For pumpkins, it’s several thousands. It’s incredible.” Admission is free, but the owners hope visitors will buy at least one pumpkin or tree. “We want it to be a fun experience for the community and affordable,” Jeff said. “Not something where a family feels like it has to spend a bunch of money just to go somewhere.” The pumpkins at Smith’s Family Fun Farm run the gamut in size, running from small sizes a toddler can carry to monster-size pumpkins that would require a crane to move. The main size offered is the more average size, jack-o-lantern-style pumpkins.

Discover Hillsborough and Orange County • 2020 . 13

“Our pumpkin growing season starts in the summer,” Jeff said. “We have another farm that we grow a lot of the pumpkins on. We truck them over here for the pumpkin patch.” It’s all-hands-on-deck when it comes to getting ready for and running the Smith’s Family Fun Farm. The Densons get help from their four daughters and their significant others. “It’s a family affair,” Jeff said. “At Christmastime, folks from our church come in and help. We make a contribution to the church that helps with its trip to Haiti. We have a couple of other teenagers who help out, too.” At Christmastime, the farm offers white pines and cedars out in the field. Visitors can walk the field to pick a tree and an employee will cut it down for them. Pre-cut frasier firs are also brought in from the mountains to be sold. “We have a story time with Santa Claus,” Jeff said. “The kids get to ride a little train to go see Santa. We have hot cocoa and all that good stuff.” Plans for expansion include adding an area for peonies for the spring so families could visit the farm around Mother’s Day to pick them. A pavilion was recently added so the farm could have activities that are covered. Eventually, the owners said they would like to add classes that could include carving pumpkins or making wreaths at Christmas. Maybe even blacksmith classes. Somewhere down the road, the family said it would like to add a pizza oven so families could come in and make their own pizzas. “We’re not commercialized,” Dawn said. “We’re just laid back. We’ve got a couple of play sets there for the kids. We do have a sunflower maze. We have places for photos. It’s just more relaxing than some of the other pumpkin patch offerings where there are activities you have to pay for. We do a tractor ride that goes into the woods. We have scarecrows set up. We just want to have fun. Nothing too expensive. That way families of all incomes can come enjoy the farm.”

14 . Discover Hillsborough and Orange County • 2020

The Denson’s have devoted 10 acres to the farm, and also include the 15 acres from their parent’s property next door. They have 62 acres in the mountains where they grow a lot of what they use. “The dream is to make it a destination for families to visit and spend the day or an evening,” Jeff said. “Every year we try to grow a little bit. Add on a little at a time. Take it slow.” Hours for the Smith’s Family Fun Farm vary from season to season. Check their Facebook page before visiting.

Antonia’s brings the best of Italy to Hillsborough Dale eDwarDs/News

Here’s a puzzle: Where can you get a taste of Italy that is authentic, mixed with a taste of New York that is authentic, and skillfully matched with a taste of Hillsborough? If you said Antonia’s in downtown Hillsborough, then you’re either a good guesser or you’ve eaten there. Brian Pearson, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Dana, has managed to create a menu that capitalizes on his 35 years of experience in the restaurant business and his love of food. Pearson has developed relationships with local farmers and suppliers. It’s not uncommon for him to learn of a new locally grown vegetable in the morning, and have that vegetable on the menu that night. The results are often magnificent. The couple opened the borderline fine dining restaurant in November 2019. The restaurant had been around for decades under previous ownership and management. The Pearsons updated the menu and the appearance. “We came in, we didn’t change any of the employees … I streamlined some service procedures,” Pearson said. “We tried to offer a little more variety on the menu because the No. 1 thing I heard from guests was that the menu hadn’t changed at all in years. So, we started offering more different things, specials. We expanded bar service. The bar was kind of basic when we came in. I come from a bar manager background, and the bar manager here was really hungry to expand what he was doing. So we took the ball and ran with that.” The bar now features an extensive list of mixed drinks, wines and beer — on tap and in bottles. The Rose Marie was particularly popular on a recent visit, and there is a large offering of Italian wines. Antonia’s offers lunch, dinner and brunch. As is the case with many restaurants, lunch and dinner specials change from day to day. What helps set Antonia’s apart from others — along with its plethora of delectable meals — is its Early Bird menu that is offered from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The appetizer — or antipasti — options are delightful. The Bruschetta boasts fresh basil and sweet tomatoes on crisp baguette slices. But the appetizer that is an absolute must is the Polpette. The meatballs covered in truffle cream sauce will make your eyes roll back into your head. Pasta plays a big role on Antonia’s menu, starring or co-starring in many of its dishes. The pasta is made fresh daily. The entrees feature a healthy offering of fresh seafood, including wahoo, Maryland-style

crab cakes, jumbo shrimp and jumbo sea scallops. Dishes featuring pork, chicken and steaks round out the entrees, but the clear show-stopper is the Lasagna alla Bolognese. The menu is varied with enough quality dishes to guarantee return visits. Antonia’s also has plenty of choices for the cheese-lover, including local selections from Chapel Hill Creamery. Other meats you can snack on include lamb Milano, Spanish chorizo and “Irish Stout.” The problem with the desserts at Antonia’s is that they’re typically offered at the end of the meal. With so many mouth-watering choices for lunch or dinner, it’s hard to leave room for the sweets. If you can, though, you will find it well worth the effort. Antonia’s is in a historic building on the corner of the Hillsborough’s busiest corner in downtown. The dining area is bright and bathed by light coming in through its large windows. The design is simple and the art on the walls is local. Outside, there are tables on the sidewalk in the front and down the side of the restaurant. The staff is loyal, knowledgeable and quick to please. It’s not uncommon to find the owner engaged in conversation with regulars and newcomers. The hostess is quick with a wave and a “hello” to people outside walking past with their dogs. Dog treats and water are always available. Antonia’s is open daily for lunch and dinner. The restaurant closes between the two meal times. It is open for brunch on Sundays. During COVID-19 times, Antonia’s follows seating guidelines. It also now offers a QR Code at each table for diners to scan with their smartphone to view their menu, in an effort to reduce the cost of single-use menus.

illsborough has begun to emerge as quite the dining destination, with five-time James Beard Award semifinalist chef Aaron Vandemark at Panciuto, authentic Italian cuisine at Antonia’s, and mouth-watering pork over on Nash Street at Hillsborough BBQ. With plenty of Mexican options, pub fare, and its own little coffee shop in Cup-A-Joe, it’s no wonder more people come into Hillsborough to eat then leave the town to eat elsewhere. Already had dinner, and looking for dessert? Hillsborough has that covered too – you can stroll down to Matthew’s Chocolates on Churton, or drive out to Maple View Farms Ice Cream parlor and sit on the porch’s many rocking chairs while you enjoy homemade ice cream.

Farm to fork O

range County boasts a rich tradition in agriculture. Farms pattern the land north and south of the county seat in Hillsborough, varying from startups to families who have worked the same land for generations. Some grow basic fruits and vegetables, while others raise cattle and goats, and still others branch out with shrimp or pickled goods. Farmers have several outlets for their wares. The Piedmont Food and Agricultural Processing Center located in Hillsborough provides a commercial center for those looking to process their produce. Several restaurants in the county take pride in bringing in food from the local farms, even boasting it on their menus. And, of course, farmers markets give residents a chance each week to meet face to face with growers. Hillsborough supports not one but two bustling farmers markets, each filled to the brim with local produce and crafts, and the greater Orange County hosts half a dozen.

Creative Side T

he saying goes if you throw a book in Hillsborough, you’re bound to hit an author, too. Writers of all types and genres seem drawn to the small Southern town in Northern Orange. Stop in at the local bookshop, Purple Crow Books, to view an entire shelf dedicated to the volumes drafted in town. But Hillsborough is home to many other art forms, as well, from sculpture to photography to lilting music.

Nightlife

D

usk has settled, the lights flickered to warm glow. Muffled talk and laughter permeates the night, and it’s time to grab a brew or two at the local pub. Luckily, Hillsborough has several options to choose from around town. You can watch the game at Hot Tin Roof with a fresh pint of a local microbrew, or grab a burger and a beer at the Wooden Nickel. If you’re in the mood for some live music or local brews, head on down to Nash Street Tavern or Yonder Southern Cocktails and Brew.

Higher education Hillsborough is home to the Orange County campus of Durham Technical Community College, which opened in May of 2008. The 20-acre campus is centrally located in the county, and its mission is to serve local residents as they pursue their educational, lifelong-learning and workplace-training goals. This state-of-the-art building houses 22 instructional spaces, including classrooms, computer and science labs, a library, a sustainability technologies lab, flexible use space, instructional and student support services areas, and faculty and student lounges. This

facility also has many green building features, including aluminum light shelves, photovoltaic systems for solar-assisted water heating, rainwater collection and reuse, waterless urinals and operable window vents in all classroom areas. All of these features contribute to energy efficiency and cost savings. The college is a popular choice for students seeking trade skills because of its university transfer agreement with University of North Carolina system schools. Just to the south, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was chartered in 1789 and opened in

1795 as the nation’s first public university. Carolina offers bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and professional degrees in academic areas critical to North Carolina’s future: business, dentistry, education, law, medicine, nursing, public health and social work, among others. Offerings include 77 bachelor’s, 109 master’s, 66 doctorate and six professional degree programs through 14 schools and the College of Arts and Sciences. The health sciences are well integrated with the liberal arts, basic sciences and high-tech programs.
