A Note from the Fowlerville Transportation Department Welcome 2013 – 2014 School Year! We are very proud of the safety record of our school buses and the professionalism of our transportation team. We are deeply committed to the safety of your child as well as all of our community’s children. We ask for your help and support as we provide the very safest, consistent bus service that we can. Please read the Transportation portion in your student’s handbook to familiarize yourself with the policies and review the expectations with your child. We want to make your child’s bus ride safe and positive. If an issue arises that makes your child feel unsafe at the bus stop or on the bus ride, please contact us at the transportation department rather than trying to discuss it with the driver at the stop. Following this procedure will keep the bus moving and allow the driver to maintain focus on traf¿c and on the other students in her/his care. Additional questions may be answered by calling our of¿ce at 517-223-6122. Thank you for your support, Fowlerville Transportation Department

Michigan Senate Report By Joe Hune, 22nd District
Back-to-school tips for students and parents Another school year is just around the corner, and soon our children will be busy doing homework, catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. 7he ¿rst priority is that students get to and from school safely. That is why I want to remind both drivers and students about safety procedures. For kids riding the bus there are three main points to remember: Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop and the doors are open before stepping into the roadway; never put your head, arms or hands out of the bus window; and when crossing the street, STOP, look left, then right and then left again before crossing. For all drivers, remember two critical rules when around a school bus: If the yellow overhead lights are Àashing, be prepared to stop; and if the red lights are Àashing, STOP. 5emain stopped until the red Àashing lights are turned off and the school bus begins moving. As parents, we also have two other important roles in our kid’s education: Ensuring that our children are prepared to learn and helping foster success throughout the year. In today’s digital, global economy, a good education is critical for children to become tomorrow’s skilled workers and strong leaders. Active parents and proactive teachers have huge impacts on fostering a child’s desire to learn. Research has shown that students whose parents are involved in their school work are more motivated and set higher career goals than students whose parents are less involved. While helping our children understand classroom material at an early age helps improve their chances for success in high school and college, parents visiting their child’s school has also been cited as a key factor in a student’s development. I encourage all Southwest Michigan parents to try to make time to help and support your young students. For assistance in this endeavor, the Michigan Department of Education has many useful resources available on its website at: www. michigan.gov/mde. To parents of ¿rsttime students, this time may seem daunting. Relax. Sometimes the best thing you can do to ensure a child’s academic success is to simply be there for them. Ensure they get plenty of sleep, arrive to school on time, complete their homework and eat healthy meals. And remember that the framework to success also lies in building up a child’s selfcon¿dence with positive reinforcement and encouragement. I hope you have a great school year! Please always feel free to contact our of¿ce at -OE HUNE or email at email@example.com anytime with questions or concerns. *** Sen. Joe Hune, R-Hamburg, represents the 22nd District, which includes Livingston Shiawassee, and the southern tip of Ingham counties.

Fowlerville United Brethren in Christ Church is offering a ministry for mothers of preschoolers MOPs beginning this fall with a kickoff meeting on Friday, September 13 from 9 to 11 am. This year’s theme is “A Beautiful Messâ€?. Moms live in messes. The toys, crumbs, and spit up are their natural surroundings. Moms often feel like a mess. They are exhausted, undershowered, and hormonal. Their past and present circumstances and decisions can leave them feeling inadequate for God’s love and purposes. “A Beautiful Messâ€? reminds moms that beauty can come out of their difÂżcult spots. The grime of mothering young children brings the beauty of motherhood. The bruises of life can bring God’s redemption. Embrace Your Story—reminds moms that their past, present and future can be used for good. God knows where each of us has been, where we are today and has set in motion where we are headed. MOPs meets twice a month on Fridays from 9 to 11 am. During this meeting time, moms get to take a break, share in good food, learn life and mothering skills, and take some time for creativity. Children are cared for, loved, and taught by MOPPETS volunteers. Childcare is provided for children from newborns through Kindergarten. Registration is now underway. Cost is 3.9 for the year with a 1 materials fee for each semester. To register or for more information send an email to: email@example.com. All meetings will be held at the Fowlerville United in y,QWHULRU'HVLJQ Brethren in Christ Church located at 9300 W. Grand y:LQGRZ River Ave. in Fowlerville. 7UHDWPHQWV%OLQGV

Around the House By Andy Lekarczyk
Well, we had a few weeks of fall type weather and may now be moving back toward summer temperatures again. If you’re working outside be smart, drink plenty of water and watch your sun exposure. After seeing the parade of antique cars on your local roads traveling to the Dream Cruise, you may be thinking about waxing your daily ride. Whether your car is garaged or not, it is exposed to dirt, tree sap, and road elements daily. This debris attaches to your cars Âżnish and a wash may not be enough to remove it. Products are available to bring your cars Âżnish back to its showroom beauty. Rubbing compounds and pre wax cleaners are all possible choices, but don’t overlook the clay bar kits. Compounds, if used incorrectly could damage your vehicles paint and clear coat. There may be rub marks that a compound would be suited for, but generally use them with care. The clay bar technology uses a spray detailing product and actual piece of clay as a mild abrasive. The detail spray is applied to a small area and the clay bar is basically rubbed on the cars Âżnish. The vehicle is washed and dried. The bar sheers off the foreign matter ‘stuck’ to your car’s Âżnish, leaving a super smooth feel. Read the extract direction provided with the product you choose. If you have chipped paint, a touch up paint is available at the local auto parts store or dealer. Correcting these hood and door nicks can prevent rust problems in the future. Next comes wax, there are many synthetic sealer products as well as traditional carnauba wax. The synthetic generally gives a better shine and a more durable Âżnish. Obviously, they are more expensive so watch for sales. The waxing or sealing process helps Âżll any paint chips or imperfections and also helps avoid future rust as well as giving you the shine you desire. The million dollar shine only goes so far without detailing plastic trim, windows, and tires. I am a big fan of the rain x type repellant products. They offer a glass polish to thoroughly clean before applying the repellant product. Make sure you follow this step. You will ‘see’ the difference during the next rain storm and don’t forget the side mirrors. Next a spray on foam cleaner for the tires should be an easy application. Finally, the trim needs attention. Plastic fades with sunlight. Several products actually are made for trim restoring. They have a syrup like consistency. You’ll be amazed how old ‘grey’ trim becomes ‘shiny black’ once again. This will take a little time to complete, but once done you will see the rewards. Park it outside, back it in, and impress the neighbors Around The House. As always past articles are archived on our website www.power2hrs.com and we welcome your questions at JustAskHandyAndy@hotmail.com.

Fowlerville School Report By Superintendent, Wayne Roedel
There are cheers and sighs heard around town this time of the year. Many parents are excited to see the new school year begin while many students are sad to see the summer end. As a parent myself, I see both points of view. Here at school, we have experienced the buzz of a new school year beginning! Our teachers have been busy preparing their classrooms for the ¿rst day with students on Tuesday, 6eptember rd and our custodial, grounds and maintenance staff have been busy making sure the physical plant is in tip top shape. There are a few changes in key positions that I would like to mention. Mr. Dan Carr, Director of Maintenance, has retired after a long and successful career with us. We have hired Mr. Dave Brown as his replacement. He has experience in this position and will hit the ground running. We are hiring two new positions to support students, staff and parents at both 6mith and .reeger (lementary. Mr. -osh Meersma was hired as an Intervention 6pecialist. He will work to maximize student academic achievement as well as address positive behavior supports for students. We will be conducting interviews this 6aturday, August th, for an (lementary Assistant Principal. Both of these individuals will actively support our building Principals Mr. Miller and Mrs. Gibson. We know that student success at the primary grades is critical to our long term success as a District. We have several teachers who have either moved grades or were hired to ¿ll positions created by resignation. If you see a new name on your student’s schedule or face in the classroom when you attend the (lementary Open House grades .- on Tuesday, August th from pm to pm, please give them a warm Fowlerville welcome. I know they will work hard to meet the needs of each and every child in their classroom. Please be aware that construction on North Grand is not yet complete and a portion of Grand River, between Grand and 6econd, will be closed for much needed upgrades. Please be patient with us as bus drop off and pick up times that were posted in the News and Views may be off slightly due to the construction, especially if you live south of town. I encourage all drivers to recognize that busses are on the road again and to remember three safety tips when you are around busses. When overhead lights are Àashing <(//OW, prepare to stop When overhead lights are Àashing R(D, 6top and When the regular hazard lights are flashing, proceed w i t h caution. My theme this year is ³We Are A// In This Together´. The ³We´ includes every employee in our District as well as every student, parent, guardian or other adult that inÀuences the life of our students. It does take a village to raise a child and it is my hope that we can all take the opportunity to positively impact the education of our students during the upcoming year. We are still actively seeking schools of choice students and have found our best advertising is by your word of mouth. If you have a family friend or neighbor who is considering attending Fowlerville Community 6chools, please have them call -- and ask for -anice. 6he will be able to help them through the school of choice enrollment process. If you are seeking additional information on the District, please visit www.fowlervilleschools.org where information from the school calendar to speci¿c information on building schedules and events can be found. Go Glads!

Fowlerville council informed on when public can or cannot speak at meetings

By Steve Horton Fowlerville Village Council was informed on the rules that govern when a member of the public can and cannot speak at meetings. The issue came up during the June 29 meeting after Tony Miceli had asked to be put on the agenda. He had wished to address council on the problem of ragweed on a section of the county drain east of North Collins Street, across the street from where he lives, and what he felt was an inadequate response from the Village president. However, when the item came up as part of the council’s business, Miceli was informed by Village President Wayne Copeland that he could not speak on the matter, but would have to wait until the ‘Call to the Public’ Miceli did so and criticized Copeland for not allowing him to speak on this agenda item, claiming that he had been “lied to and once again denied my due process.â€? In an interview after the meeting, when asked about the situation, Copeland said he was told by Village attorney David Stoker during the meeting that Miceli needed to wait until the ‘Call to the Public’. Under the rules governing the ‘Call to the Public’, an audience member wishing to discuss a topic on the agenda or some other matter has up to three minutes. Council, though, will not answer any questions or make a response. Miceli said that he had asked to be put on the agenda so that he could have a back-and-forth discussion with council, something he couldn’t do under the ‘Call to the Public’ format. In the past, council has had individuals make verbal presentations on various matters and asked questions afterwards. At the recent August 12 meeting, council trustee David Kuehn had the issue put on the agenda to “explain whyâ€? Miceli was not allowed to speak. “Some us are confused on how people can and cannot speak before council,â€? he said. Stoker said that under the Open Meetings Act, passed by the Michigan Legislature, a public body is required to offer one ‘Call to the Public’ during a meeting, adding that many entities including the Fowlerville Village Council offer one at the start of the meeting and a second one at the end. “At this time a member of the public can talk about anything they wish,â€? he noted. “During a scheduled public hearing, anyone can speak during the meeting as long as it relates to the speciÂżc item on the agenda.
“As for an action item that’s part of the regular meeting, you fall back on the council rules you’ve adopted,â€? he said. “These are not required by law, but something council is allowed to establish in order to run their meetings in an efÂżcient manner. Whether it’s someone on the Village staff or someone sitting in the audience, if the president or the majority of council wishes for them to speak, they can. Under the rules, the president can allow them to participate or a council member can ask if there’s any objection to having someone address the members. If not, then the person can speak. If there is an objection, then the majority of council decides.â€? Stoker noted that the public is often not aware of these rules and added that council in the past has not always followed them. “They are not statutory, but council established them and should follow them,â€? he advised. “They’ve been in place for a number of years.â€? Council trustee Mike Stock commented that part of the confusion by he and other members about the July 29 situation was that the public has been allowed to speak on an agenda item in the past. “That’s why we were surprised when he (Miceli) was not allowed to speak,â€? he added. What did not appear to get clariÂżed was, if someone asks to be put on the agenda and that request is granted, will they be allowed to speak and be part of the discussion or does this permission need to be granted during the meeting and also is the participation limited?

2013-2014 FOWLERVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS SCHOOL BUS ROUTES Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. The following bus route guide will help you establish an estimated time of bus arrival at all our bus stops. Minimums have been established for distances between bus stops. The following policy is used during routing. Bus stops for students in grades K-2 will be no closer than 200 feet, grades 3-5 stops will be no closer than 350 feet, and grades 6-12 stops will be no closer than 400 ft. Previously established bus stops may be consolidated to reduce the total number of stops. This will result in the elimination of existing bus stops and/or the creation of new stops. The listed stop times and locations are subMect to change, especially during the ¿rst few weeNs of school. 'uring the ¿rst several weeNs of school it will be necessary to have students at their designated bus stop 20 minutes prior to the scheduled bus arrival time. Once the bus stop times have been established, it is the district transportation policy that all students be at their designated bus stop location 10 minutes prior to their picNup time. Military honors will be performed at the grave site of John Crofoot on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. in Fowlerville. The site is located in Greenwood Cemetery, just east of the Mausoleum. The remembrance is being organized by John’s older brother, Robert ‘Bob’ Crofoot, and comes 69 years after the young man was killed on a bombing run over Europe. “He was a machine gunner on a B-24 bomber,â€? said Crofoot. “He was stationed in England at the time of his death in 1944. The entire crew was killed.â€? The military honors are being conducted by the David Murnigham Detachment of the U.S. Marine Corps League of Livingston County. Bob Crofoot, who served in the U.S. Marines during World War II, is a member of the veterans group. Members of VFW Post 6464 are also expected to take part, while VFW member Butch Ogden will offer the main address. The mortality rate for the bombing crews during that stage of the war against Nazi Germany was high. “He knew what to expect,â€? said Bob of his brother. “He had enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943.â€? John was born in 1923, one of eight children of Arthur ‘Bud’ and Iva Crofoot, and grew up on the family farm on Crofoot Road. Bob and George are the only living siblings. Also deceased are William, Wallace, Marvin, Paul, Edna, and Richard.

Living Happy & Healthy By Dawn Siggett A&( &erti¿ed Personal Trainer & Group Instructor
An Introduction Over 25 years ago I was drafted into a teaching position in aerobics. My enthusiasm, drive, and sheer joy in physical ¿tness moved me to become a certi¿ed personal trainer, group exercise instructor, spinning instructor, zumba instructor and yoga instructor. I have had the honor of teaching classes and personal training clients in California, Michigan and the Bahamas. Six years ago I met and married a man from Fowlerville. Moving to Fowlerville from the big city was a big adjustment, but I quickly fell in love with the people and embraced the slower pace of living in the country. Many things have changed in my life but my commitment to ¿tness and desire to help people with their ¿tness needs has not wavered. One way for me to reach out to my community and share my ¿tness knowledge, is to write a ¿tness article. I will be sharing ¿tness and nutrition tips, latest studies on health and ¿tness and any other information that would be

helpful to obtain a healthier lifestyle. I have always believed that if you found a ¿tness activity you enjoyed, you will make that a part of your “every day” life. Find an activity…start slow and commit! I love music and I love to dance…so that is my go to activity. Others may ¿nd taking a brisk walk with their pet is their go to activity. Find what motivates you and start having fun!! Living Happy & Healthy, *** What is the best time to work out? I am often asked – when is the best time of the day to workout? Some research indicates that working out ¿rst thing in the morning is better because you start revving up your metabolism for the day and therefore burning more calories throughout the day. But on the Àip side, research also indicates that in the morning your core body temperature is low and you are not as alert in the morning, so if you are going to work out in the morning you should do something easy and light. Other research has shown that working out in the afternoon or the evening is better because your body temperature peaks and the rate your muscles repair and recover also peak. So it is suggested, that intense workouts should be done in the afternoon or evening. So what do I tell clients who ask me when the best time to work out? I tell them to workout when it is convenient for them! With today’s busy lifestyles, it is best to ¿nd a time that works for you on a consistent basis. Whether it is morning, afternoon or evening, the important thing is to get your workout in! Did You Know: --Getting a workout does not always require going to a gym, running on a treadmill or attending a spinning class. You can also burn calories by doing some fall clean up outside. Raking leaves for one hour for a 150 pounds woman will burn 300+ calories; 374 calories for cutting the lawn, weeding for one hour will burn 306 calories. So go outside, get some fresh air and clean up your yard! --Visualization…..it is important to visualize how you want to look when you reach your goal. Find a picture of yourself at your favorite weight and post it to help you with visualization. Many successful athletes will visualize their performance before getting up to bat, or running that race, or getting on the balance beam. Visualization is very powerful and will help you reach your goal. --Formula to Losing Weight – when calories consumed is less than calories expended – weight loss will occur. The rate of weight loss will depend on how many fewer calories you are eating and how many calories you are burning from physical activity (i.e. exercise). A healthy rate of weight loss is between 1-2 pounds a week. One pound of fat = 3,500 calories. In order to lose one pound in a week, you will need to reduce your net calories by 3,500 either between food intake or calories burned.

Outdoors: Blackberries “Find any berries yet?” I’d rolled the truck’s window down to ask a fellow I’d seen berrying from time to time, who was walking up the road in the late morning. His blue eyes twinkled from a sun reddened face and his shock of white hair was just a bit disheveled. “Been getting almost two quarts a day for the last three,” he answered while holding up a container almost ¿lled with the shiny fruit. There was some pride in his voice. I’d been watching the patch in the shady hollow by our cabin and it was just beginning to show a little of the ripening berries. “:ow :here’d you ¿nd that many?” I asked the question spontaneously, not really expecting him to reveal his berrying hot spot. “Been picking down along Crenshay Road,” he added right away.” I think there’s enough for everybody along there. You should ¿nd plenty there right now,” he continued. And so the blackberry season was on. Shirley and I, armed with a couple of our granddaughter’s sand pails, took to the land out back and in our hollow to begin our ¿rst “pick.” We waited until late afternoon when the cottonwoods had swallowed most of the sun’s heat but no longer. Until evening we picked in the yard behind the cabin and along the twotrack that wound out back. Our reward was a quart and a half of the year’s ¿rst blackberries and another pint of the season’s last raspberries. We always feel good about sharing in nature’s harvest and that evening I kept remembering the words of our fellow berrier. Already there were enough berries for a pie and perhaps a small batch of jam. The Crenshaw patch just might provide enough additional fruit for a larger batch. At about 9:00 the following morning, I was on my way to the suggested place while Shirley saw to baking a fresh pie. I prefer the picking and wanted to spend my time in the patch; Shirley wanted to bake. But that was several years ago and I’m here to tell you that blackberries are likely to react differently and according to the weather every year. A hot dry season such as last summer, likely would result in small and hard berried. A warm and wet summer will likely result in large, juicy fruit. And if the weather remains warm and moderate the time for picking blackberries might stretch into late September. More than once I’ve found excellent berries while scouting for the opening of archery deer season just before the October opener. Even in November when the frosts have been light, I’ve found big, shiny berries peeking out from beneath the golden bracken ferns. At any rate this late summer and fall look promising for a good crop. For anyone who would rather harvest their own wild berries than pay a dollar a handful at your local produce department in your grocery store, now might be a good time to check the roadsides or the places you’ve found blackberries in the past. Just remember to wear long sleeves if you ¿nd and plan to pick. A blackberry patch is jealous of its fruit and has some of the sharpest thorns in all of outdoors. Good luck as you participate in one of Michigan’s longest wild fruit seasons!

Michigan House Report Cindy Denby, 47th District
School is starting in just a few weeks and that means that school buses will be back on the road in full swing. Proper safety near a school bus is important and helps ensure that students get to and from school safely. This is a perfect time to review school bus safety with your kids before they head back to class. I also take this time to refresh my own memory on driving safety around school buses and I encourage you to do the same. Remember motorists must come to a complete stop at least 20 feet away from school bus that has its red lights Àashing and must remained stopped until the red lights stop or the bus starts moving. I hope that you and your families have a great transition into the new school year. ##### As children and teachers across the state start heading back to school my fellow legislators and I will be ending our indistrict work period and heading back to session. I have enjoyed time to meet with many of you across the 47th District. I received great feedback and ideas from you and I’m looking forward to taking these great ideas back to Lansing and sharing them with my colleagues as we continue our work to propel Michigan even further down the path to success. 2ver the ¿rst si[ months of the 7th Legislature we were very successful in our efforts to continue Michigan on the path to recovery. We started this year with an Action Plan to guide us through this legislative term and it has served as a great tool to move Michigan in a positive direction. We have already accomplished many of the goals on this list and I am looking forward to continuing that work this fall. Michigan is in a much better place than it was a few years ago but there is still work to do. I’m proud of all we have accomplished so far this year and look forward to the hard work and reforms that will take place in the upcoming months. To view the Action Plan as well as see the goals we have already accomplished visit www.gophouse.org.
