Why visit this corner of Asia? It has a reputation for being clinically clean and regulated but it is also great fun, very safe and quite diverse – a true melting pot. Surprisingly, it isn’t too busy with groups of tourists. It is best to visit in spring to avoid the worst of the stormy weather. However, you do need to enjoy the heat; it envelops you as soon as you step outside. It is expensive, but try the excellent food courts (usually in the basement of the huge shopping malls) and dine with the locals.

It is reasonably compact and walkable but public transport is needed to reach the botanical gardens (on a regular bus route from the centre). These are definitely worth a visit; very lush, varied and beautifully landscaped, with an excellent orchid garden where the flowers are so perfect that they don’t seem real.

Singapore is the first city to make concrete interesting, thanks to unusual structures and much greenery and water. There are many multi-storey buildings with good views over the city but, for a great panorama, try the Singapore Flyer, Singapore’s version of the London Eye.

It is a meeting of cultures, so leave time to explore the different ethnic quarters. Kampong Glam, with its Arab influence and beautiful Sultan mosque; Little India, with its multi-coloured Hindu temples; and Chinatown. Here is the opulent Buddha Tooth Relic Temple where the 4th floor overawes you with gold and riches. On a lower floor is an extraordinary collection of Buddha icons and carvings. The history of Singapore is very well explained at the National Museum of Singapore, which is far from stuffy.

However, the jewel of Singapore has to be the Gardens by the Bay. This can be found a short walk from the waterfront, across the helix bridge and then there is a shuttle bus to the site. Wander through the ‘super trees’, the steel structures covered in thousands of plants that provide the electricity to cool the biodomes. There is a Skyway walk across the treetops and every evening they come alive in the Garden Rhapsody light show. There are two conservatories – the Flower Dome has a dry climate with cacti, succulents and a beautiful display of blooms, whilst the Cloud Forest is tropical with its impressive waterfall and ‘mountain’ of plants. There is plenty to see and do for families, couples and individual travellers. Overall, Singapore is one for the must-see list.

Funchal, Madeira

Cabo Girao

All ‘insider view’ articles have been supplied by people within our business

Funchal, Madeira

The Pearl of the Atlantic Taking just three hours and 30 minutes from London, Madeira lies in the Atlantic, just off the coast of Morocco and above the Canary Islands. This gives it a warm and sunny climate year round, with temperatures rarely rising above 25c. It is a very green island and colourful flowers and fruits can always be seen. For nature lovers, walking alongside a levada is a must-do experience in Madeira. Levadas are man-made channels created to carry water for irrigation of agricultural fields around the island. There are more than 200 on the island, covering a distance of over 1,400 kilometres. The walks range from easy and flat to strenuous abovethe-clouds hikes, so you can choose a level that’s comfortable for you. I would recommend taking a guided hike, as you will learn so much more from your experience. There are no natural sandy beaches, but the majority of hotels have swimming pools and there is also a public lido you can use. For a first time visit, I would recommend staying in Funchal, the capital. The main part of the city is fairly flat but rises

steeply towards the lido area. Funchal has a large port and cruise ships can be seen arriving almost daily during the winter season. Right beside the port is the Cristiano Ronaldo Museum, which is well worth a visit to see the impressive display of sporting trophies that he has won. Cristiano was born in Funchal and not only has a hotel here, the CR7, but the airport is also named after him. Take the cable car from the sea front up to the village of Monte. Here you have the stunning Monte Palace Tropical Gardens to visit and the start of the wicker toboggan ride, one of Madeira’s most famous attractions, dating back to the 1850's. These sledges are powered by two 'carreiros' in white uniforms and straw hats and cover about 2km at speed, travelling down towards Funchal. You then either take a taxi to the city or walk down the very steep roadways. Visit Camera de Lobos village, which inspired some of Winston Churchill's paintings, and Cabo Girao, which has the highest sea cliff walk in Europe, over a glass floor. Both of these can be reached by buying a one or two-day bus pass using the yellow or red tourist

Cable cars above Funchal

buses located on the sea front. There are many excursions available for full or half-day durations, so you can easily cover the whole island in a few days. There is a vast choice of hotel styles in Funchal, including both historic and modern five-star hotels alongside more traditional Quinta properties (Portuguese country house). Over the last few years, many boutique hotels have also appeared, including high-tech, futuristic ones. Evening entertainment, away from the hotels, tends to be based around the many restaurants and openair bars. However, simply strolling along the city waterfront can be a relatively peaceful end to an adventurous day. We have an exclusive solo 8 day tour to Madeira departing 9th October 2020 priced from

CROATIA Too Beautiful To Stay In One Place ...

I was fortunate enough to experience Croatia in October 2018. Croatia is quite an up and coming country with more and more people wanting to travel there for its un-spoilt beauty, so it was a fantastic opportunity to experience this for myself. I started in Dubrovnik, on the mainland, and then travelled to two islands, Hvar and Korcula, via catamaran. The islands are extremely picturesque and full of history, with Korcula being my personal favourite. There are countless marinas and promenades lined with local bars and fish restaurants.

The people of Croatia are very friendly and welcoming and want you to discover everything about their homeland. For those that are a fan of TVs ‘Game of Thrones’, there are several sights that were used as filming locations and you can take a guided tour to see for yourself. As well as contemporary and luxury hotels, you can stay on board a yacht and spend seven nights sailing around the different islands. Or, why not travel to the captivating Plitvice National Park to see the iconic waterfalls? I would definitely recommend a two-centre holiday; the country is too beautiful to stay in one place.

Shubuya, Shinkansen and Sprawling Cities in Japan Konnichiwa from Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun. I was fortunate to visit Japan at the end of September and discover what an amazing country it is. The people are so welcoming and so polite; everywhere is so clean, there is no litter or graffiti and everything runs on time. I visited Tokyo, Japan’s capital city of high-rise buildings and spaghetti road systems and endless tunnels. It was a thrill to walk with what felt like thousands of other people across the famous zebra crossing at Shubuya. Also, the Tokyo underground was amazing; there was no pushing or shoving and everyone gets on and off in an orderly fashion. From Tokyo, we flew to Sapporo on the island of Hakkaido. This region is a popular skiing area during the winter months and is becoming better known by European skiers who want something different. From Sapporo, we flew to Osaka and onwards to Kobe. Here you can take a cable car to one of the mountains behind Kobe to take in the spectacular views of this sprawling city and it is harbour. We took a train to Kyoto, the old capital, a city that escaped the bombing during World War II and so most of the historic temples and other buildings are still there for you to see. Geisha girls in their colourful Kimonos wander the streets, but you must ask of their permission before taking any photos. From Kobe, we took the Shinkansen (bullet train) back to Tokyo. En route, to our left, we passed Mount Fuji but, unfortunately, it wasn’t snow-capped at this time of year. However, it’s still a magnificent sight and ending to our fantastic journey through Japan. We will return one day soon to sample more of this beautiful country – during cherry blossom season, hopefully.

This is the most luxurious hotel on the island; also owned by Fred. Olsen. The crossing takes 50 minutes and we were all pleasantly surprised by the spacious areas available on board. There is even outside seating for sun worshipers and we were lucky enough to spot a pod of dolphins jumping through the waves – it was just magical.

As we neared the hotel in the small village of Playa Santiago, we passed the award-winning golf course next to the property’s very own banana plantation. We all fell in love with the surroundings and ambiance; the hotel offers such a feeling of peace and tranquillity and a real escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The bungalow-style rooms are built around the beautiful gardens and winding pathways, which leads to it feeling very private and serene.

Garajonay National Park, which has a beautiful landscape full of unique and magnificent flora and fauna. The tour ended with a visit to Fred. Olsen’s restaurant, Abrante, where the main attraction is a seven-metre-long glass skywalk suspended above the small town of Agulo. During our lunch, the waiters demonstrated their traditional whistling language, which was used by generations and is still taught in schools today. Whilst super peaceful, La Gomera is also the perfect place for an active break. Trekking, cycling, climbing, rappelling, canyoning, golf, running, Yoga and Crossfit are just some of the many activities that await. The Hotel Jardin Tecina offers an authentic stay that includes a mix of luxury and natural discovery. We would highly recommend this beautiful hotel and island as a perfect year-round destination.

We enjoyed a tour of La Gomera. One highlight was a stop at the

From the moment you step off the plane to the time you leave, you will be surrounded by some of the friendliest, most down to earth and genuine people that you could want to meet. It’s easy to see why Thailand is often called the ‘Land of Smiles’.

Food – If you are a foodie, you are in for a real treat. Thai food is a celebration of the fresh and fragrant, offering an abundance of delicious flavours. Make sure you have a big glass of water handy though as some of the dishes can be a tad spicy!

I honestly believe Thailand has something to offer everyone, from culture vultures, sun worshippers who love beautiful beaches, active families, honeymooners, adventurers and thrill seekers to people seeking peace and tranquility.

Fearless – If you have ever seen a family of five riding together on the smallest moped through the busiest streets of Bangkok, you will know what I mean.

Having been to six different areas of this amazing country, below is what sums up Thailand for me: Culture – Thailand is influenced by the modern day, yet still retains very proud links to its tradition and Buddhist spirituality. The country is filled with over 41,000 magnificent Buddhist temples, many of which are still used by Monks today and are fascinating to visit. Festivals – Thailand loves a Festival, with celebrations for things like food, water, lanterns, monkeys and elephants being held almost every month of the year – any excuse for having fun and socialising! I have been in Thailand for the Loy Krathong festival and absolutely loved being a part of a tradition where tourists and locals all get involved and celebrate together.

Beautiful Beaches – With over 2,000 miles of coastline and 8,000 islands to choose from, there is definitely a beach for every taste. These include quiet, secluded coves and stretches of sand that are filled with partying tourists. Value for Money – With a bowl of rice priced as low as 20p and a local beer costing around the £1.50 mark, Thailand offers tourists great value for money whilst dining. Also, the street markets are not only great fun but offer clothes, shoes, Thai silks and other souvenirs at great prices. Make sure to take an extra bag to fill before coming home. Marine Life – My latest holiday in Thailand was to experience the diving. Being one of the cheapest places in the world to complete a PADI course and offering the chance to see some absolutely amazing sea life, Thailand is one of the top destinations if you have an interest in snorkeling or diving. I had the opportunity to complete a night dive. This is the best time to see the larger marine life – a heart pounding experience, I can tell you. Unique Experiences – One of these for me was ‘Elephant Hills’, Thailand’s first Luxury Tented Jungle Camp on a lake, offering kayaking, jungle safaris and the opportunity to ethically interact with Elephants, bathing and feeding them. It’s a real highlight.

Whether you’re considering heading off on your first ever holiday at sea or you’re a regular on the ocean waves, there are so many great reasons to take a cruise. There is nothing quite like seeing the world from the rails of a cruise ship, making this a unique holiday option that more and more British people are falling in love with every year.

So why choose to cruise? Well, with all this to look forward to, why not? Value For Money It’s easy to look at the price of a cruise and see it as quite an expensive holiday option. However, when you consider everything included in the fare, it actually represents fantastic value for money. Depending on which cruise line you sail with, the price you pay will not only include accommodation but meals, entertainment and some shore excursions too. Choose an allinclusive operator and this will also stretch to things like your drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and possibly even butler service in your cabin.

See The World, Unpack Once One of the greatest cruising perks is the chance to see so many different destinations in one trip – something that would be almost impossible during any other type of holiday. Add this to the fact that you only need to unpack once and then wait for the spectacular sights to arrive outside your window and it’s easy to see why cruising is such a great way to see more of the world.

Look out for our featured destination and holiday experiences, all from people within our business. 26

If you’re looking to cruise in 2020 or 2021, whatever the reason,

There’s A Ship For Everyone

Relax and Refuel

Experience Unique Thrills As the top cruise lines all compete to outdo one another, the range of activities available at sea continues to get bigger and better. Things that you wouldn’t have thought possible a few years ago are now commonplace on the decks of a cruise ship, meaning there are some truly awesome ways to keep yourself busy. Think zip lines and go-karts, surf simulators and water slides, roller coasters and planetariums; there’s no way any member of the family will be bored with all that on offer.

With our lives getting busier and the increasing connectivity that technology brings creating more stress, there is more need to switch off and relax now than ever before. And, whilst we may have just highlighted some of the amazing activities at sea, the fact that you can equally decide to do nothing means that a cruising holiday is perfect for anyone looking to escape their daily routine. Lounge by the pool, amble aimlessly through beautiful cities, book a rejuvenating treatment in the onboard spa – it’s time to forget the phone and restore yourself to factory settings.

If you’ve heard about or seen an aspect of cruising that has put you off, perhaps you just need to tailor the holiday more to your personal taste. Don’t like the idea of giant, modern cruise ships? Choose a smaller, more intimate ship instead. Need something the whole family can enjoy? Opt for one of the many child-friendly options. Want to venture off the beaten track rather than see the major tourist spots? Consider an expedition cruise for something more adventurous. There really is a cruise ship for everyone, so it’s just a case of finding what suits you best.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

SMALL Ships, BIG Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ flycruises are the most exciting and rewarding way to discover some of the world’s most exotic, far-flung and inspirational destinations, with unforgettable sights and once-ina-lifetime experiences featured on every expertly crafted itinerary. And what an experience it is…. With Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, you can experience the incredible wildlife of South Africa and the Indian Ocean islands; the paradise beaches of the spectacular islands in the Seychelles, Indonesia and the Andaman; the ancient treasures of Asia and Arabia; and the endless icons of Australia, from the awe-inspiring Great Barrier Reef to Sydney’s legendary landmarks and New Year’s Eve celebrations. Journey to Thailand Travelling from Heathrow to Phuket, we were met by friendly, knowledgeable guides and taken on an insightful transfer to join the beautiful Boudicca. On arrival at the ship, our luggage was taken to our rooms and we were welcomed on board. Having an overnight on board in Phuket meant we were able to explore the ship and relax before heading out the following day.

Our tour in Phuket was to Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, travelling from the ship to the lagoon pier to join a speedboat for our scenic cruise. Our next stop was Ko Panyi, a 200-yearold sea gypsy village, which was one of the first communities to settle in the bay. The entire village is built on stilts above the water. After a tour of the village, we headed over to Rang Yai Island for a Thai meal. After time to relax on the white sand beach and a swim in the clear waters, we returned to the pier and the awaiting Boudicca. Back on board, there was time to enjoy the sailaway before getting ready for dinner. Dining is a high point of every Fred. Olsen cruise; expertly crafted dishes are served by waiters that provide a service that is second to none. After dinner, there is a programme of evening entertainment to suit everyone, ranging from music, cabaret and quick-fire stand-up comedy to the relaxed tones of a grand piano or a night of dancing in the Lido Lounge. The next day we arrived in Sabang, Weh Island, Indonesia. Representing Indonesia’s northernmost and westernmost point, this small volcanic island (often called Sabang after its capital) is known for its diverse

Ko Panyi

marine ecosystem. Guided by an English-speaking local, we were taken past historic Dutch colonial buildings to the colourful markets; the Century Sabang Museum, which houses items of artistic and cultural significance; and the old primary school. The evening comprised a truly premium dining experience at The Grill, featuring the finest cooked-toorder steaks and sumptuous desserts served in elegant, sophisticated surroundings. A day at sea offered the opportunity to relax on board and enjoy the intimate and more traditional cruise experience that Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines offers. Boudicca boasts three heated pools, a selection of relaxing bars and lounges, a library and card room gaming tables. There’s also a full entertainment programme that includes guest speakers and performers, arts and craft lessons, fun quizzes, Yoga, Pilates and other fitness activities. You can pamper yourself with a visit to the spa or pickup a holiday bargain in the onboard shops. And don’t forget to sample the traditional afternoon tea. Arriving into Singapore, there is so much to see and do. A city orientation tour, a boat ride along the Singapore river, a must-do stop at Raffles for a Singapore sling and a tour of Gardens by the Bay to visit the Flower Dome (the largest glass greenhouse in the world) combined to create the perfect last stop for the end of the trip.

Smaller but spacious While Fred. Olsen’s vessels are on a more accessible scale, you can have just as much private space. With fewer people on board it’s easy to find a quiet spot. There’s room to stretch out by the pool, and you can get ashore faster too. And when you’re ashore, you’re seeing the best of each port with hundreds – not thousands – of others, giving you a much more authentic experience.

Service with a smile Each member of the Fred. Olsen team has been carefully selected for their warm and welcoming personalities. The quality of our people, supported by training and development, ensures they will give you a great holiday. In fact, 97% of guests rated Fred. Olsen’s friendly, attentive staff ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’.

FREE Drinks & Tips* You can benefit from FREE Drinks & Tips on over 120 Fred. Olsen sailings. On Ocean Cruises, selected house wines by the glass, selected beers, spirits and soft drinks are included all day and evening, while on Brabant River Cruises, you’ll receive red and white house wines, a choice of beers and branded soft drink with your lunchtime and evening meals. The Fred. Olsen difference With the fifth generation Fred. Olsen as Chairman, they’re led with 170 years’ worth of seafaring heritage, and in their combination of smaller, friendlier ships, warm and welcoming staff, and awardwinning itineraries, they believe they’ve found the perfect formula for you to get the best out of your holiday with them.

Bringing the world closer Their size advantage means they can take you to places that some of the larger cruise vessels simply can’t. They dock close to the heart of some of the world’s most beautiful cities and can take you on scenic cruising adventures showcasing inspirational landscapes. Their itineraries are expertly crafted to make the most of this advantage.

They’re so confident that you’ll enjoy the whole Fred. Olsen experience that if you find that it’s not for you within 48 hours of sailing, just let them know and they’ll arrange for a flight back to the UK from the next port and give you your money back.

Award-winning Cruises Our friendly staff and crews always work hard to give you the holiday of a lifetime. Pleasingly, this has been recognised by Fred. Olsen winning a number of recent awards, as well as attaining a guest experience rating of 4.5 out of 5, from over 34,000 independent guest reviews on Feefo.

A Must for your Bucket List Seeing the Northern Lights, going on an African safari, writing a book or learning to play an instrument, there are certain things that a lot of us have on our bucket lists. What about the experiences we might not have thought of? I’m excited to bring you a once-in-a-lifetime tall ships experience with Star Clippers that will blow you away. Whatever else is on your bucket list, the tall ship experience is a must-do, unique experience in the world of cruising. So what is a tall ship? Well you can’t miss the sails that we most associate with their beautiful outline. On board, the crew raise the sails by hand and this is their defining feature. This means it all feels like an authentic sailing experience, resonant from the days when ships roamed the world.

So, it’s hard to believe these ships aren’t from a dream. The Star Clippers fleet will transport you to hidden beaches in Asia or the cradle of civilisation in Europe. At the same time, you’ll find the comfortable surroundings you’d expect. You’ll enjoy a six-course meal in the oldstyle dining room. Then find time to relax in the casual bars and bask in the pool with the sounds of the wind soothing you. As she hugs the coast, you can enjoy an array of activities like snorkelling or gentle yoga. The atmosphere on board is always very relaxed and unhurried.

Venice Barbados

As such, you can wander as you please on board. Enter into the bridge to connect with the captain. Relax up on the rigging or pop in on the engine room. Here on board, you’re all taking part in the adventure together with the crew and that’s what makes the tall ship experience different from a typical cruise. Experiences like being under sail as you glide towards a heavenly, isolated beach or the feeling of being lifted by the wind. You’re able to enjoy the sight of beautiful and enticing islands, seen from the crow’s nest. It’s moments like this that make me feel like I’m in my element.

he gentle lapping of the waves against a winddriven hull. A pod of dolphins playing in the

curling bow wave. These graceful ships fly along the waves, just like the legendary clippers of a century

and a half ago. And this is as much an adventure in highly evolved relaxation as it is in tradition. It is this unique combination of sailing and pampered relaxation that is the essence of Star Clippers.

ALASKA Multi-Generational Glacier Hunting

Alaska - not the first destination that springs to mind for a family holiday but, for us, it was the perfect adventure for the three generations of my cruising family, taken in style and comfort thanks to a cruise on board Cunard’s luxurious Queen Elizabeth. Our family group consisted of my husband, daughter, our two-yearold Granddaughter and myself. For me, the only way I was ever going to see Alaska was on a cruise. So, when Cunard announced that the stunning Queen Elizabeth would be cruising the region in 2019, it had to be booked. My husband was desperate to travel on the Rocky Mountaineer and, whilst the promise of endless cocktails whilst travelling in the Gold Class glass-domed coaches did appeal to me, it wasn’t something I felt the need to do. My my husband opted for the Rocky Mountaineer Banff to Vancouver pre-cruise extension and he loved every minute of it; being transported in luxury through amazing scenery via Kamloops and some fabulous hotels, whilst all luggage was taken care of. The family was reunited in Vancouver and we embarked Queen Elizabeth for 13 nights along the Inside Passage and back down to San Francisco. This, for me, was where the real holiday started. Every day was different, every port was different, the scenery and sunsets never failed to impress. We went on adventures to meet big brown bears; we saw waterfalls, icebergs and glaciers. Kayaking in Sitka, walking through Creek Street in Ketchikan, Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, a ride on the iconic White Pass Scenic Railway in Skagway and soaking up the scenery and smell of pine trees at Icy Straight Point all followed too.

The highlight of the cruise was most definitely entering Glacier Bay; it was just breathtaking. The bright blue ice glistened like diamonds in the sunshine. The sound of the ice calving broke the sereneness and stillness of the bay as it fell away and crashed to the sea below. The approach to the glacier early in the morning was beyond magical, as the scenery grew ever closer whilst chunks of ice clinked against the hull of the ship. The captain slowly spun the ship twice in the bay so everyone got a full view of every inch of the glacier. Unforgettable!

A River Cruise Recommendation River Cruising is an amazing experience like no other. You get the superb service, dining and the ‘unpack-once-but-experience-manydestinations’ benefits of an ocean cruise mixed with a more intimate small ship, lower passenger numbers and beautiful scenery as you cruise. Plus, there’s the bonus of docking in some of Europe’s most stunning cities. I have been lucky enough to sail along the Danube from Passau to Budapest and I will never forget it. Cruising into Budapest, past the impressive parliament building and under six or seven bridges from the sun deck, is wonderful. Along the way, I saw castles

and churches surrounded by forest, went shopping in tiny artisan villages and, of course, the wine tasting was a highlight. I ate more delicious food than I should and, from the ships’ restaurant, I could still see the countryside flowing past me. My cabin was lovely, with a dropdown window that made me feel immersed in all I was seeing. There was even a pool on the ship to take a dip. I would encourage everyone to give river cruising a try – it is something different for experienced cruisers and, for those who aren’t sure if an ocean

cruise is for them, it is the perfect stepping stone. Give this little bit of luxury a try! Top Tip: Nearly everything (shampoo, hairdryer etc) is provided for you in your cabin, so you can save room on your packing – just don’t forget an adapter.

An American Adventure Have you ever wondered what the real America is like? Do you wonder about those film-like photos of Southern plantation homes, with their history of splendour and slavery; The American Civil War; and Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn? Was the most difficult word you learned to spell at school Mississippi?

She holds 190 passengers at full capacity and I noticed there were quite a few solo travellers enjoying the trip, as well as multi-generation families. There was a gentleman on board who had wanted to cruise the Mississippi for 59 years and a couple who had been looking forward to experiencing this river for 35 years.

If any of these have caught your imagination, an American adventure along the Mississippi is a must. We completed a week aboard the traditional paddle steamer ‘America’ with American Cruise Lines and tied this in with a short stay in Memphis beforehand and New Orleans afterwards. The whole holiday exceeded expectations - and here are some of the reasons why...

American Cruise Lines has grown quickly and successfully on the Mississippi and other American rivers, and most trips they are close to being sold out. The cruise included daily excursions of high quality, gratuities, and wine and beer at lunch, dinner, cocktail hours...and beyond.

We headed for Memphis and were surprised how enjoyable a visit to Graceland was. It wasn’t just the trip around Graceland and seeing the remarkable home of Elvis Presley, it was also seeing all the new exhibits that recent investment has created – there’s more about the culture of the times now. It was so enjoyable and stimulating; we spent nine hours there! We also visited Sun Studios, home of the famous rock and roll pioneer, Sam Phillips, who discovered and recorded Elvis along with Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. Another big highlight was when we visited the Civil Rights Museum, actually located in the Lorraine Motel, the site where Martin Luther King was assassinated. It was highly informative and extensive; a great way to get a feel for the historic part that slavery and freedom from slavery would play in the places we were about to visit. The American Cruise Lines paddle steamer ‘America’ is a traditionally design Mississippi River boat.

In search of the

Northern Lights Flying from selected UK airports Various Departure Dates throughout 2020 & 2021

The trips were hugely informative with visits to places like • Vicksburg – site of one of the most critical Civil War battles • Plantation homes – some of which you may have seen in films or photos, offering a clear representation of the wealth, hardships and slavery • Baton Rouge – capital of Louisiana and home to a superb museum The onboard entertainment was well handled – often a small ship has lowkey entertainment. For this cruise, the artists included a national awardwinning banjo player; a well-known jazz trumpeter; the ‘Southern Belles’; and an expert on the Mississippi, its wildlife and history. Arrival at New Orleans meant a very different experience – jazz, vibrant live music and Creole food. Besides the famous ‘French Quarter’ and Bourbon Street, there were other famous landmarks including iconic Creole and Cajun restaurants, and a famous World War II museum. This was a fine way to experience a taste of real America in the South.
