The Exotics

Pioneers of River Cruising

Walk the path less travelled. Discover the magic and beauty of a distant land. See the world through someone else’s eyes. At AmaWaterways, their love for travel inspired them to bring their river cruise expertise to the more remote parts of the world. With their innovative ships, carefully designed itineraries, expert guides and immersive tours, you can explore the exotic in elegance and comfort. Join AmaWaterways on a journey that is sure to delight, amaze and leave you with special memories that will last forever.

AmaWaterways was founded in 2002 by Rudi Schreiner, Kristin Karst and the late Jimmy Murphy, each of whom brought decades of experience, knowledge and dedication to the venture. Rudi is one of river cruising’s pioneers, having introduced the modern-day river cruise concept to the travel industry back in the mid-1990s. Kristin contributes extensive experience in sales and customer service, both in Europe and in North America. Jimmy founded tour operator Brendan Vacations. Together, their expertise and hands-on way of doing business have created the most distinctive river cruise line in the industry. The founders and staff share a passion for travel and seek to give other travellers genuinely life-enhancing experiences. In an effort to take river cruising to a whole new level, they have focused on providing customised ship designs, the highest quality amenities and services, and interesting, well-crafted itineraries. AmaWaterways is now an award-winning river cruise line operating in Europe, Asia and Africa. As their company grows and builds new ships, they remain family-owned and operated and continue to lead the way in river cruising.

AMAWATERWAYS: FAMILY-OWNED & OPERATED SINCE 2002 From left to right: Rudi Schreiner, President; Kristin Karst, Executive Vice President; Gary Murphy, Vice President of Sales

The Exotics AmaWaterways desire to offer extraordinary travel opportunities in more remote and undiscovered destinations led them to develop "The Exotics" programme. While their ships, onboard amenities and services differ somewhat from our flagship fleet in Europe, "The Exotics" consistently delivers the highest standards available in places such as Vietnam and Cambodia, Myanmar (Burma) and Africa. Their newly built or redesigned ships are staffed by impeccably trained, friendly crew members, and their well planned and expertly guided land programmes are considered the best in the industry. AmaWaterways place great emphasis on fostering in-depth cultural encounters and treat their guests to delicious regionally-inspired cuisine. "The Exotics" is an ideal choice for explorers seeking truly unforgettable and one-of-a-kind journeys.

The Mekong Cruise through Vietnam and Cambodia on the fabled Mekong River, also known as the “Mother of Water.” For centuries, the sagas of ancient empires, colonial powers and modern conflicts have unfolded along its banks. To this day, the river serves as a vital lifeline to millions of people, and on an AmaWaterways river cruise you will experience a compelling contrast of past and present. Witness Sampans and motorboats yield to one another as cone-hatted fishermen check their nets while chatting on mobile phones. Take in serene monasteries and thatched stilt huts, as well as dense cityscapes in capitals like Phnom Penh. It is an awe-inspiring spectacle that simply must be seen to be believed. Wherever the Mekong takes you, the sincere warmth and friendliness of the Vietnamese and Cambodian people will leave a lasting impression.

The Ayeyarwady There is no better time than now to explore Myanmar (Burma), where travellers are welcome to experience a land and culture that has been closed off to the rest of the world for decades. Explore this mystic and spiritual destination along the Ayeyarwady, where you will see former royal Capitals, thousands of temples and pagodas, and authentic daily life – smiling women in bright sarongs, dark-robed monks and rice farmers leading ox carts. Myanmar is rich with timeless and exotic sights, and the gracious Burmese people are eager to show off their beautiful, unspoiled country.

The Chobe This scenic and amazing waterway, only 50 miles from Victoria Falls, forms the northern boundary of Chobe National Park. It passes through the game-rich ‘Four Corners’ region where Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe meet, home to nearly 500 species of birds and the largest concentration of elephants in Africa. The river is a rich haven for wildlife, particularly during the dry season from May to October, when water further inland is scarce. In addition to elephants, a variety of other animals are drawn to this important water source, including lions, jackals, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, monkeys, kudu and impalas. AmaWaterways' Africa itinerary is a unique combination of a river cruise and immersive land programme, is the ultimate way to experience this must-see part of the world.

Game viewing along the Chobe is most popular during the dry season (April-October), but Victoria Falls is at its peak flow during March and April and later in November. Stars of South Africa 3 nights in Cape Town followed by a 4 night safari cruise, 2 nights in Victoria Falls, 2 nights in Johannesburg & 3 nights at a safari lodge in the greater Kruger National Park South Africa is known as a year-round destination for viewing animals. However, the best animal viewing is between April and October during the dry, winter months when water sources are scarce and the bush is less dense making the animals far easier to spot.
