Cruise news P&O Cruises celebrates milestone for Britain’s newest cruise ship

Hurtigruten's New Roald Amundsen Debuts The new hybrid Roald Amundsen has debuted for Hurtigruten, becoming the first cruise ship able to operate on battery power.

A key stage in the construction of Britain’s newest and most contemporary cruise ship has been marked at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg.

The ship turned on her battery packs for the first time off the west coast of Norway recently, enabling her to silently move through the water completely emission free.

The team building P&O Cruises 180,000 ton ship Iona, which will be powered by liquefied natural gas, making it the UK’s greenest ship, celebrated the milestone with the traditional coin-laying ceremony.

Hurtigruten captain Kai Albrigtsen was at helm as MS Roald Amundsen left the yard for her maiden voyage along the Norwegian coast.

A bronze coin from the historic Iona Abbey and a slice of precious green Iona marble from the island were placed under the block housing the bow thrusters. P&O Cruise’s president Paul Ludlow who attended the event said “This was an auspicious occasion in Iona’s build. The coin-laying is a long-held ship-building tradition which is to bring good luck to the ship and its crew through from construction to the future at sea."

“It is very special to think that a small part of the island of Iona will live within our own Iona... The build of any ship is an incredible achievement but to see one of this size and scope is an extraordinary feat of skilled design and engineering. To view Iona’s SkyDome take shape was literally breath-taking – no other ship in the world has a glass dome of this quality and scale. The extent of the space on Iona has allowed us to create not only spectacular spaces for shows, entertainment, dining and wellness but also many more intimate spaces for tranquillity and relaxation.” Iona will be launched in May 2020 and will spend her maiden summer season in the Norwegian Fjords followed by winter sun holidays to the Canaries, Spain and Portugal.

"This opens a new chapter in maritime history. MS Roald Amundsen is the first cruise ship equipped with batteries, something deemed impossible just a few years back. With the introduction of MS Roald Amundsen, Hurtigruten sets a new standard not only for cruising, but for the entire shipping industry to follow," said Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam. The ship is named after polar hero Roald Amundsen, who led the first expedition to traverse the Northwest Passage. "The MS Roald Amundsen is designed and built with sustainability at core of every little detail. In addition to the green technology, this makes her the first cruise ship in the world designed to be single-use plastic free. Sustainability will also be an integral part of the guest experience. From the hand-picked Hurtigruten Expedition Team to the industryfirst Science Centre, we will give the guests a deeper understanding of the areas we explore," added Skjeldam. Two more ships are set to follow, including the Fridtjof Nansen, debuting in 2020, and a yetto-be-named sister in 2021.

Jane McDonald Partners with Floating Festivals for Special 2020 Charter Floating Festivals are delighted to announce a new sailing for 2020 – Sail Away with Jane McDonald. The Queen of cruising is chartering her own ship for fans to join her on an exclusive week on the high seas. Speaking about Sail Away, Jane said: “I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to be having my own special cruise... This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time so to finally have the opportunity to invite everyone to come on holiday with me is very exciting.” While Jane has made a couple of one-off performances on cruise ships, Sail Away will be the first time everyone’s favourite cruise star has chartered a ship for her own dedicated cruise. As well as seeing Jane perform during the cruise, passengers will also get to enjoy a special ‘Audience With’ event where Jane will be interviewed live on stage about her life and career. And if that isn’t enough, Jane will be on board for the duration. presents

Sail Away with Jane McDonald departs Southampton on 20 September 2020 for 7 nights. Passengers will enjoy Royal Caribbean’s luxurious Anthem of the Seas with full board dining and amazing features including the incredible Bionic Bar, the FlowRider surf simulator, the signature Royal Caribbean Rock Wall, SeaPlex – the largest indoor active space at sea, RipCord by Ifly – the first skydiving experience at sea and North Star, providing 360-degree views 300 feet above sea. Onboard with Clare Ward

In the spirit of this issue and our focus on influential women in cruising, Cruising Magazine catches up with Clare Ward, Director of Product and Customer Service for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Having worked for the company for seven years now, she tells us how she helped implement the ‘closer’ strategy to ensure travellers enjoy great experiences in smaller ports. Plus, what does Clare think cruising will be like in the future?

6 Cruising Magazine

Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your history in the travel industry.

What developments have you implemented whilst being at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines?

I started my career as a financial analyst, and I was a General Manager for six years, as well as working in several product and commercial strategy roles. I only started in the travel industry when I joined Fred. Olsen, which was in October 2012. Prior to that, I worked for Whitbread and David Lloyd Leisure, so my experience is really in the wider hospitality business. My wide variety of experience has helped with my current role, which covers product development, offship operations and pre- / postcruise guest communications. In my spare time, I love to walk (I have a caravan in Thetford Forest), listen to live music (any type, any level) and eat in independently-run places. My husband is a wine educator, so I am partial to my wine as well!

My focus at Fred. Olsen has been to implement our 'closer', small-ship strategy, in as many areas as possible. From an itinerary perspective, we divert the ship to show guests areas where other, larger vessels ships are not able to venture, and we specialise in docking closer to the destinations that we visit. We specialise in taking our guests to more destinations than any other cruise line, which is a key part of the 'Fred. Olsen Difference', as we like to call it. In 2020/21, guests will be able to explore the world with Fred. Olsen’s fleet of four smaller, more intimatelysized ocean ships – Balmoral, Braemar, Boudicca and Black Watch – along with our river cruise vessel, Brabant, to 277 destinations in 90 countries, across six continents. From a tours perspective, we are

developing a closer, more 'real' experience in the destinations, showcasing genuine people, history, cultures and traditions. We were delighted that our considerable efforts in itinerary planning and tours development were recognised by Cruise Critic’s experts in its prestigious ‘UK Editors’ Picks Awards 2018’, where we were named 'Best for Itineraries', for a record fourth year in a row, as well as ‘Best for Shore Excursions’. Finally, from a guest services perspective, we have moved from letter and e-mail-based communication to taking time to speak to, and engage with, guests as

much as possible over the telephone. Our intention is to put the customer at the heart of everything that we do and to provide guests with an even better, more co-ordinated and consistent level of service, from the very start of the booking process, through to the onboard experience and post-cruise. Our more hands-on, personal approach has been very well-received by our guests, over 60% of whom return to Fred. Olsen time and time again.

What is involved when planning an itinerary. For us, the most important thing that we consider when we put an itinerary together is to make sure that

it delivers the key elements that are the most important to us as a brand: closer, scenic, real, uncrowded, and delivering the 'best time to see'. Creating itineraries, though, is a mixture of both art and science: as well as heaps of creativity and imagination, you also need to factor in the more practical considerations: the speed and dimensions of the ship; the likely weather conditions and currents, and their potential impacts; fuel consumption and bunkering; the ability to take on stores of fresh produce; previous guest enjoyment of the destination; cost of ports, and whether they deliver best value to guests; the facility to be able to offload garbage safely and in line with regulations; and, if we are unable to make fresh water on the ship, where this can be taken on board.

How do you see the evolution of cruise? More segmentation is happening in the cruise industry all the time. The 'megaships' are equipped with amazing facilities and offer guests lots of choice and variety on board. However, inevitably, due to their immense size, they are often berthed further out from the destination. This means that the length of time the guests can spend experiencing the town or city is shorter than it is with our smaller ships, due to the travel time in and out.

Also, smaller destinations can feel more crowded when the larger cruise ships call. The small luxury brands offer guests a more personal experience, both on board and on shore, but at a significantly higher price point. Fred. Olsen bridges the gap between the two, giving guests the benefit of our renowned, awardwinning 'closer' experience, both on board and shoreside, at a more To us, the ports are not just ports, they affordable price than the luxury lines. As a testament to the smaller-ship are the actual destinations! The most important reason why guests choose a cruise experience, Fred. Olsen recently partnered with The Royal British cruise is the destinations that it visits, so making sure that we can give guests Legion to take 250 D-Day veterans the best experience possible is critical. to commemorative services in the UK and Normandy, France on the 'D-Day A great destination can be spoilt 75 Voyage of Remembrance'. This by a bad port, though. For us, if unique kind of specialist groups cruise the port is too far away or too could only have been delivered on a difficult to access, this really affects more intimately-sized ship, such as the guests' overall experience. Fred. Olsen's 880-guest Boudicca. We also find that our guests dislike In a growing and increasingly popular rushed port calls and crowded days cruise industry, we feel that there is in destinations. We generally find room enough for all of us, but brand that guests choose a specific cruise differentiation, specialist itineraries for the purpose of visiting one and curated cruise experiences will be destination, but end up enjoying the keys to success in attracting the another destination even more! discerning cruise guests of the future.

Why are ports of call so important to your guests?

Meet Captain Kate McCue America's First Female captain

A passionate foodie with a lifelong ambition to become a cruise ship Captain, Kate McCue's dream came true. Actually, she took it one further - she became America's first-ever female captain. So Celebrity Cruises are delighted to welcome her to the family. Now the world is her oyster and Celebrity Edge is her new home.

How did you become a cruise ship Captain? I've been fascinated by the role of Captain ever since I was 12 - when my parents took me on a Caribbean cruise. I told my dad I wanted to be the Cruise Director - the person that plans all the fun events on board. Then my dad told me something that would change my life forever, "you can do anything you want in the world, including drive the thing." I spent nearly two decades of training to become a Captain after starting out as a third mate. It was at the California Maritime Academy where Captain Jerry Aspland, who was the President of the Academy, gave me the best advice for my career, "don't put yourself in a position to lose".

first female President and CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo; he read it then looked up at me and back at the letter, and then at me again and said "Captain?" Tears were streaming down his face.

What's your opinion of being the first American female Captain?

What made you want to work with Celebrity?

I am the first Captain on a mega cruise ship and feel both humbled and excited, but men and women have been doing amazing things before me. Now I intend to spread the word about the industry's fantastic opportunities.

I wanted to work with Celebrity Cruises for a couple of different reasons: I want to work in an office with ever-changing spectacular views, the chance to visit seven different continents and work with over sixty different nationalities - all within unmatched modern luxury.

What do you love about being onboard? I love interacting with our incredible guests and meeting all the people who've given me such overwhelming support. Of course, Celebrity Cruises is known for its amazing food and, as a foodie, I love the amazing pastries I'd heard so much about. You can see all my favourite things about my travels on Instagram @CaptainKateMcCue

Who did you tell first when How did it feel to put you were made Captain? the four stripes on? I asked for special permission to tell my dad on Father's Day. I handed him the letter I got from Celebrity Cruises' 14 Cruising Magazine

Incredible. Instantly recognised by the guests - some even did a double take.

you're not a stereotypical Captain, but we've heard you do have a tattoo? Every sailor's got a tattoo, right? I have an anchor on my foot to keep me grounded, and then I've got my compass rose and my ship's wheel to see where I'm going.

And finally, are you enjoying the job? I think this is the greatest job in the world! Travelling, meeting all these people... it's the best!

Shout Hvar! for Croatian Island Hopping

There are so many beautiful sights along the Dalmatian Coast that it’s impossible to choose just one destination for your Croatian holiday. Luckily, you don’t have to choose if you don’t want to. Island hopping to the various points of interest in the Adriatic is a great way to see more of this alluring region whilst still providing a relaxing trip in luxurious surroundings. One of the highlights of your cruise is sure to be Hvar, where the charming nature of the Old Town hits you even before you get off the ship. Other fascinating islands include Korčula and Solta, both of which showcase maritime history, breathtaking buildings like St Mark’s Cathedral and stunning beaches. Something you’re sure to enjoy is the chance to sample some of the locally produced food. The cuisine here is heavily influenced by nearby Italy, as well as the other Balkan countries further inland, and makes great use of home-grown olives and lavender. It’s not all about the islands, though. Your cruise will also touch areas of the mainland that have become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks in no small part to a certain dragon-filled TV epic. Dubrovnik needs no introduction and has one of the most picturesque Old Towns in the world. The red-roofed buildings beckon you to explore the city walls, whilst the narrow side streets give you plenty of reason to discover what lies at ground level. Plus, we challenge anyone to resist the smell of grilled fish emanating from the restaurants around the harbour. Meanwhile, Split offers a window into the past in the form of treasured Roman monuments. At the forefront of these is the sprawling Diocletian’s Palace, a former royal residence that now houses many bars, restaurants and shops within its crumbling walls. This creates a living museum that will have you looking up in awe as you wander through the streets, admiring the way that the ancient and modern aspects of the Dalmatian Coast’s largest city fit perfectly together. Perhaps the locals sum-up what you can expect during an island-hopping cruise in this part of the world when they greet each other with ‘pomalo’. This casual welcome translates as ‘take it easy’ and that’s exactly what you should do.

Shrines, Sakura and Samurai

Although consisting of more than 6,000 islands in total, cruises to Japan focus on the four main, biggest patches of land. Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu all offer breathtaking experiences that showcase this vibrant nation in all its glory, allowing you to enjoy the modern and the traditional side by side: Neon and noodles, Sakura and Samurai, bullet trains and Buddhist temples.

Travel in March or April and you’ll arrive just in time to see some of Japan’s most popular cities turn pink with the colour of cherry blossom (Sakura). In order to enjoy the picturesque, pastel settings that this bloom creates, locals and tourists gather in urban parks to enjoy picnics by the riverside underneath

a canvass of petals, a pastime that has come to be known as Hanami. This is not the only natural wonder to look out for on a cruise to Japan, though; there are many other places in which Mother Nature takes centre stage. Hot springs, beautiful parks and the imposing Mount Fuji all vie for your attention as you try to take it all in your stride. Even if certain sights seem far away from the point where your ship docks, fantastically fast and efficient public transport will mean nothing is off limits. Any excuse to ride the futuristic bullet trains, an experience that could well be on your bucket list itself. Look out for cruises that give you the chance to stay overnight in some of Japan’s biggest ports. You’ll need plenty of time to fully appreciate

destinations like Tokyo, Kobe and Osaka so the more time offered, the better. This also gives you the chance to see what life is like after dark and even sample the nightlife. So, whether you spend those extra hours with the reflection of neon signs in your eyes, the taste of Kobe beef in your mouth or shopping bags from the Namba district in your hands, it’s sure to be time well spent. Authentic experiences await around every corner as you get to grips with various different aspects of Japanese culture. History and religion tend to go hand in hand, something you’ll soon learn when you visit temples, shrines and palaces in places like Nagoya, Hakodate and Kobe. Centuries-old traditions can also be observed during geisha dance performances, typical

Authentic Japan tea ceremonies and the chance to don a kimono. Plus, comic book fans may already have Sakaiminato marked down as a must-visit port. This is the birthplace of the creator of Manga series GeGeGe no Kitaro, Shigeru Mizuki, and is home to many nods to his iconic characters. Why should your eyes have all the fun, though? Give them a break from admiring the fantastic sights by tasting some of the delicious food that makes Japan a gourmet destination. If you love seafood, you’ll be excited to find plenty of it on and off the ship. Sushi obviously gets most of the headlines but there’s much more to Japanese seafood than this famous fishy export. Tempura prawns, baked octopus balls known as takoyaki, and unagi (eel) are just a

few of the other options likely to be on the menu too. That’s not all, either. Away from the briny depths of the sea, there are oodles of noodle dishes to wrap your taste buds around and local delights like okonomiyaki (savoury pancake) to sample. Whilst Japan is amazing, there’s no reason to limit your cruise solely to this destination. Certain itineraries can take you to other surrounding countries to help you get more of a flavour of the FarEast. Explore Busan in South Korea or add a land stay in China to walk the Great Wall – there are so many possibilities in this part of the world.

Welcome to boutique, luxury cruising

2019 signals a new beginning for Saga Cruises, with the launch of Spirit of Discovery, their first purpose-built ship. Of course, you’re familiar with the concept of boutique hotels. However, Saga is taking it to a new level, by applying it to cruising. That’s what you can look forward to when stepping aboard their new flagship Spirit of Discovery. All the comfort, luxury, fine cuisine and high levels of service you’d expect in a boutique hotel, except here you’ll wake up in a different destination to the one you went to sleep in. Taking to the oceans this Summer, Spirit of Discovery is the only small ship being built for the British market, offering a balcony for every guest and a choice of free speciality restaurants. All backed by Saga’s famous personal service and inclusive value. Fine dining has long been an integral part of every Saga cruise, and this is continuing aboard their new ship. Guests can look forward to the widest-

ever selection of restaurants at sea, led by an expert team of Executive Chefs. Plus, all speciality restaurants are completely free of charge. Spirit of Adventure, sister ship to Spirit of Discovery, will take to the oceans a year later in August 2020. Sharing the same high levels of boutique luxury but with her own distinct character, she will introduce a second wave of luxury cruising to Saga’s distinctive new portfolio. Whichever ship you choose, Saga always stands out for its unbeatable value for money. Once the fare has been paid, there is very little to budget for, they really do include so much more in the price. In fact, every cruise can begin with chauffeur service from home to the port. It’s not an added extra, but included as standard for everyone, up to 250 miles each way. On board, all meals are included, even dining in all the speciality restaurants. A choice of complimentary wines are

served at lunch and dinner, while snacks, afternoon tea and 24-hour room service are also included, so is free Wi-Fi throughout the cruise. Saga's 2020 season is All Inclusive.

Industry insiders Fred.\ River Cruises is the UK general sales agent for Amadeus River Cruises, American Cruise Lines, Volga Dream, Far Horizon and Pandaw. Here we find out more about Sukie and her new role in this growing sector.

Tell us about yourself and your travel history? I began my career working for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity which enabled me to see the world and be part of the growing cruise industry in the UK. In those days, nearly 500k people from the UK had taken a cruise each year, mainly to the Caribbean - this was an exciting time as we started to sail out of Barcelona, Rome and finally from the UK. I then worked for an online cruise specialist company for 12 years where I travelled on many different cruise ships, from the luxury of Regent and Oceania to the bigger ships of Carnival and P&O Cruises.

What made you make the move into River Cruise? River cruising is a thriving market, much like ocean cruising was only a few years ago. It's not just the allure of the waterways that keeps me working within the industry, but the destinations and sights that can only be seen as you cruise along the river banks.

Can you tell us a bit about the brands you represent? The brands in our portfolio are luxurious, with a mix of destinations that can be tailor-made to traverse a range of rivers around the world. Amadeus River Cruises is a family run business operating throughout Europe for over 30 years. Customers can expect culturally engaging cruises while being introduced to the hidden gems of Europe and the comforts of river cruising along with exceptional service. If you want to explore further afield, Pandaw sails throughout Asia with 38 Cruising Magazine

immersive river expeditions with the most popular itineraries sailing along the Mekong and Ganges rivers. Their beautifully handcrafted ships, carrying up to 50 passengers, are specially designed to travel to remote areas which are unreachable by other passenger-carrying vessels. Their shore excursions allow guests the opportunity to spend time with the locals and gain access to the array of landscapes and wildlife. Many of our customers enjoy pre or post-cruise stays, spending anywhere between 3-7 days experiencing a land-based tour before joining the cruise. Another one to tick off the bucket list is the mighty Mississippi with American Cruise Lines. Operating the largest and newest fleet of Coastal cruise ships and paddlewheelers, American Cruise Lines offer over 35 itineraries to 25 different states. Extend your American journey with a stay in Nashville to visit Graceland or the vibrant city of New Orleans before your American river cruise. If you want a cruise through India, Amazon, Russia or the Nile we have handpicked some great brands that offer you an unique experience.

Why would a traditionally Ocean Cruiser enjoy a River Cruise? It's easy to distinguish the intimate atmosphere between the smaller

river vessels to the larger cruise liners. Offering shallower drafts, river vessels boast itineraries that get up close and personal with a wide selection of ports which are inaccessible by cruise ships. The relaxation on board and the calming water surrounding you is a similar feature on both cruising journeys, along with the exceptional food and array of excursions.

What’s next to come for Fred.\River Cruises? With a demand for a combined land-based and cruising holiday experience, we offer the flexibility of pre and post-cruise stays, along with regional flights and a choice of rivers across the globe. We are able to tailor-make the perfect river cruising journey designed with you in mind.

What advice would you give to someone looking to EXPERIENCE a River Cruise? If it is your first time traversing the world's waterways, I recommend a European river cruise. With so many rivers to choose from, the comfort and ease of Europe's nearby rivers boasts both luxury and scenic wonders right from your window.

Explore some of the world’s most famous and iconic rivers, and discover more than just the coastal areas as you wind your way through the heart of some of the world’s top destinations. Traverse the United States along the Mississippi river, discover temples, sanctuaries and the local villages along the Mekong or explore the European landscapes along the Rhine Gorge
