Digital. Human. This 10th Anniversary Directory was on track for being physically handed out, as usual, by the fotofringe helpers at Kings Place on 23 April, 2020, to 500 or so visitors who use image agencies to support their work. Instead, on that day I am writing this in my kitchen, and, in common with the rest of the world, adjusting to the total upside-downing of everything I’ve been doing, and how I’ve been doing it, in the space of just a few weeks. The times are daunting, no question, but is there sanity and lasting benefit to come? Business is personal, and that’s now obvious to even the most ferocious compartmentaliser. It’s impossible to pretend otherwise when online meetings are enlivened by domestic backdrops, dogs or children briefly interrupting or spouses snaking an arm into view to nick the cafetiere back. But we are visual creatures and everyone reading this works, in one way or another, in a visual job. As my theatre director and science-trained husband puts it “first, humans communicated physically, with gesture and eye contact, then through the spoken word, lastly through the written word”. In the last few weeks, faster than could have been imagined, there has been a massive shift from over-reliance on the written (eg emails) back to the visual (eg video conferencing), something which can very much play to all our strengths as we work in teams, negotiate rights, attract and retain customers and cross new thresholds. And books, films and online education in particular are increasing in importance as populations wrestle with massive change. I would ask all readers here - creatives, publishers, marketing professionals, and production companies - to turn to the agencies that are listed in this Directory. Investigate what we can offer, be direct about what you need from us, source from us. The truth is that interconnectedness gives strength, and that is what inspired the creation of fotofringe in the first place. Webs, networks, tapestries, arches, bridges, fishing nets and knots….. partnerships, collaboration, exchange. Here is the opportunity to communicate and transform in the way humans were built to – personally, and visually. Digital. Human.

Flora Smith, fotofringe
