DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THE MEON VALLEY LANDSCAPE

or this month's front cover, we're delighted to feature another painting by local artist Jerry Smith. The peaceful scene is a colourful celebration of the Meon River as it meanders gently south, passing the village of Soberton which is just a short walk away.

The old railway line is never far from the course of the river and both have a charm about them when the sunlight and shadows are in full effect. Even in the middle of winter, the Meon can make for a pretty picture (see below). The lanes and paths along the valley slopes between here and the artist's home in Swanmore also have their own distinctive character enhanced by the changing seasons, Cott Street and Mayhill Lane to name but a few. With spring now well and truly underway, it's definitely a good time to be out exploring this inspiring landscape.

Jervis Court Lane near Swanmore

This month Jerry will be having his second solo exhibition, with a range of new landscape paintings and drawings on show, plus prints and greeting cards for sale. The exhibition will take place at the Paterson Centre in Swanmore on Saturday 20th May from 10am until 4pm, with a range of original work, prints and greetings card on sale. He'll also be taking part in the annual Hampshire Open Studios event in the last week of August. Jerry runs his own oil painting art classes and gives private tuition, as well as painting demonstrations and workshops for local art groups.

King of the Skies “It’s definitely dead.” I say, interrupting our Sunday afternoon walk in the middle of a deserted country lane. “Well, done, Miss Marple.” My husband stares at the dead rabbit. Glassy eyes stare back, whiskers and soft fur moving gently in the breeze. It could be a taxidermy exhibit or a discarded toy. “There’s barely a scratch on it. It can’t have been a car.” But looking closer, there are scratches. It seems something has grabbed the rabbit, then for some reason dropped it – possibly from a height that was enough to kill the poor thing. Then we hear it, the unmistakeable ‘mewing’ of a buzzard, its plaintive cry calling far above our heads. And it’s brought company. Shading our eyes from the sun, we peer up into the cloudless sky and count four raptors gliding over the open fields, gradually circling lower until they are over the lane. The buzzards call to each other, flying so close that at times their wing tips seem to be touching. A family perhaps; parents teaching the juveniles to hunt. I get the uneasy feeling that we’re being watched. “Come on,” I say. “We can’t stand here all day.” But I could. Watching these enigmatic birds of prey is hypnotic. Earlier in the week, I stood in our garden and spectated as a posse of crows chased a lone buzzard out of their neighbourhood. It seemed to take delight in goading them, weaving circles around the smaller birds before soaring effortlessly upwards on powerful wings that reach nearly a meter and a half at full stretch. This is one cool customer. Hunting in daytime, the buzzard holds its wings straight and still as it glides on thermal

18

currents, its tail feathers spread like a fan. This raptor makes it all look so easy. One wildlife expert even described the buzzard as ‘sedentary’, although the aerobatic flying displays during breeding season are anything but, with a catalogue of spectacular dives and loop-the-loops. Once a buzzard has found a mate, they’ll stay together for life, building a series of bulky nests which they regularly ‘decorate’ with bits of ferns and other greenery. Once the eggs, have hatched (normally two or three in mid-April) and the chicks are mature enough to be left in the nest, both parents hunt for food. It’s such a pair that I’ve seen gliding over the garden and surrounding fields, a good hunting ground for their favourite food – rabbit. If bunnies aren’t on the menu, they’ll settle for small rodents, birds, worms and insects, and there are reports of them catching snakes. The buzzards have made themselves unpopular in some areas due to their taste for pheasant, and gamekeepers can legally shoot the predators under licence. We had a trio of young pheasants trotting round the garden, entertaining, but gormless - easy pickings for a hungry buzzard. But the best view of these impressive raptors has been from the car.

On a stretch of dual carriageway flanked by fields and woodland, a buzzard regularly perches on a post only metres from the road. The road-kill caused by our many vehicles is welcome food for a buzzard. Its ability to hover, then throw itself into a rapid dive, gives it a chance to swoop down between passing cars to retrieve the carrion. Then it’s back to the sentry post to watch and wait. One day I nearly drove off the road due to my staring at this huge bird! It gazed back, looking haughtily down its hooked beak. Those amber eyes are like a telescope, able to spot a moving rabbit at a mile away, or from 300 feet above the ground. After a moment, the buzzard nonchalantly turned its head away, shuffled its mighty talons and scanned the field over its muscular shoulder. The rabbits had better watch out. BY CLAIRE THURLOW

JULIE CUMING HORSE PRODUCTION

GEORGE HOLLINGBERY MEETS WICKHAM ENTREPRENEUR TO DISCUSS BUSINESS RATES

J

ulie Cuming Horse Production has been showing and breeding Welsh section C and D for over 30 years on a hobby basis but now they are very fortunate to have their own yard with excellent facilities including a 40x20 ménage, good size stables and post & rail fencing. This will enable them to undertake show and sales prep liveries on a commercial basis.

M

eon Valley MP George Hollingbery has met with a Wickham entrepreneur to discuss business rates and the economic climate. George had talks with Ben Warwick, who runs the Warwick Lane antiques market in the village, after he contacted him over proposed rises in business rates, which could affect traders in the market.

Julie has had many successes both ridden and in-hand showing with Welsh and Mountain and Moorland Ponies and have achieved top prices at Brightwells sales and qualifying for Hoys with one of the mares and then one of the offspring which was sold. Another home bred coloured won the national Welsh championships. Julie has always enjoyed the production side of things, so being able to do this for clients as a job would be a dream come true for her.

“It was good to meet Ben, who has come back to his home village to set up his business, become a parish councillor and made a real contribution to Wickham,” said George. “The issue of business rates was talked about and, at the time, I said measures would be implemented to help small businesses. I’m happy to say the Chancellor in his budget capped any business rate rise for small traders who have lost business rate relief because of revaluation to £50 a month or £600 a year. “This will allow small traders, like the ones in Warwick Lane, certainty they will not be getting big bills and it will allow them to plan ahead. I thank Ben for contacting me and discussing these important concerns and I wish him all the best in his business.” www.georgehollingbery.com george.hollingbery.mp@parliament.uk Constituency Office: 01962 734 076 Westminster Office: 0207 219 7109 26

Her son was a showing world finalist in the junior handler section and is helping Julie with the in-hand ponies which gives her great joy to watch as he is becoming a real showman! For more information, please get in touch with Julie via: 07799 584666

Jane's Kitchen LETTUCE & TARRAGON SOUP

T

his is a delicious if delicate soup and ideal for using up any of your home grown lettuce that may have ‘shot’. Like all good soups it needs a good flavoured stock. Home made from a roast chicken carcass with vegetables added is always good and if strained well makes a clear stock. However a cube will do too. To make a richer soup the addition of single cream is optional. I serve it with oatmeal scones or wholemeal bread so not to spoil the subtle flavour.

Ingredients • • • • •

1 Small onion or shallot finely chopped 1oz of butter or margarine. A head of lettuce (dark green variety such as butter head or little gem) washed and Sliced. 1 ½ – 2pts chicken or vegetable stock 2 – 3 sprigs of fresh tarragon

To finish - a small amount of single cream and some diced cucumber

Method Sweat the onion or shallot in the butter until just transparent. Add the lettuce and stir over a low heat until just wilted. Add the chicken or vegetable stock plus the tarragon, if using dried tarragon be sparing as it will give a stronger flavour. Season to taste and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Puree the soup and add the cream, if using, and adjust seasoning. Finish with the cucumber, diced or cut into ‘matchsticks’. From ‘Jane’s Kitchen’ - An enjoyable read and delightful reflection of village life. Containing a collection of seasonal recipes for every occasion and budget. Illustrated with colour photography and watercolours throughout. Available from Leckford Farm Shop, Chilbolton Village Stores or direct from: randjbrown12@btinternet.com Price £6.99

FIVE A DAY?

on’t ask me what I was doing in the baby food aisle, clearly thinking about other things, but I suddenly noticed just how many varieties of foods there are crammed into tiny jars and tins. Exotic foods from around the world as well as the British staples of lamb, beef and chicken. “Can I help you, Madam?” came the unexpected enquiry. “Um, no it’s fine, thank you, I was just wondering what to have for tea”. I felt certain the work experience newbie wanted to call over the PA system: ’New fad diet consumer in aisle four!’ I beat a nonchalant retreat to the fruit and veg section and set about gathering all things healthy. The baby food took me back though, my first-born was six weeks early so my dear old body was not ready for the dairy cow experience. As he was beyond tiny, it was rather like trying to feed a butterfly with a pipette. After two weeks in SBCU chained to an expressing machine with regular visits from a plaited hair, open-toe sandal-wearing, earnest mother of ten who was supposed to offer breast feeding advice, but only looked on with both disappointment and pity; I was more than ready to leave. Starting motherhood feeling a failure is not how it’s meant to be so I decided if I couldn’t feed him then Mother Nature would. Over the months while the formula bottles steamed themselves sterile I set about my own home-cooked organic baby food production. This guilt-driven cottage industry initiated the purchase of a second freezer. Ice cube trays containing every fruit and vegetable combination known to man, (and a few that possibly were not- carrot and kiwi didn’t go down a storm), were stacking up to cope with the demands of his ample appetite. Five years later when my second was born my forty-one year old body simply said ‘you have to be kidding. Are you nuts?’ and promptly gave up in the milk department despite the best, if

32

slightly harsh, efforts of a maternity nurse who in exasperation contorted my breasts and baby this way and that in an effort to achieve ‘latch on’. I blew the dust off the sterilizer and ice cube trays and started up Pagan Potted Provisions again with much success, although my second-born soon became a ravenous steak and chips kinda guy. But no matter I was at least reassured that, even before the advent of ‘Five a Day’, they were getting double that quantity of fruit and veg. And now years on there are times when Chez Pagan struggles to cope with the size off my off spring especially when we all decide to cook at once. The happy bi-product of feeding them copious fruit and veg is that my eldest has developed a taste for the high end, not for him breakfast cereal but rather mashed avocados on brown bagels with poached eggs and grilled bacon. I look on with envy as I spoon in another Muller Light. My youngest has strayed recently; he has developed a penchant toward patisserie and makes fabulous cakes and deserts. What’s the problem I hear you ask, well he prefers to eat them at every meal in fact they are the meal! All that training! Where did I go wrong? Before I admit to being a failed Pagan parent I’m putting down to puberty, the drive for independence is strong in this one as is the taste for sugar. The battle lines are clear- I pack him off with a couple of pieces of fruit; he lets them rot in his bag. I stock the fridge to Hemsley and Hemsley standards; he says there’s nothing to eat. So the next non- pulse Pagan proposal has been vegetarianism two days a week but he is still adamant that his sneaked post evening meal snack of cheese and onion crisps makes up a further two of his Five a Day! I capitulate. Hang on where’s that recipe for carrot cake… Sandra Pagan

CHARITY CAKE SALE RAISES STAGGERING AMOUNT FOR A WORTHY CAUSE

BISHOP’S WALTHAM ROTARY: FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT

D

ebbie Walker is preparing to make history when she takes over as President of Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club on Thursday 6th July as the club’s first female President, leading over thirty local Rotarians raising money for local and international charities. Debbie, who was one of the first two female member of BW Rotary club after it first voted to include ladies in the membership in 2010, said: “I am tremendously honoured to be appointed as the club’s first female president, which I firmly believe is a reflection of how Rotary is moving with the times. My focus during my year in office will be to attract new members, especially women and young people who are interested in volunteering”. Since Debbie joined, BW Rotary has expanded its female membership to a total of 5 members, so far! Debbie lived in Durley and went to local schools, enjoying village community life and taking part in Durley Carnivals. Indeed, one of her earliest recollections was as a fairy on a float! She brings a wealth of business experience to her new role from her career in the Hotel Industry, where she was a Director of a national Hotel group. Many locals will, of course, recognise Debbie from her successful ownership of The Coffee Shop for 7 years. After turning 50 Debbie took up cycling to keep fit and got the bug for charity cycle rides. She has now completed 3 x 66mile ‘Ride the Night’ in London, 250 miles in Kenya and China. “My next challenge is Brazil in September 2017, which combines fitness, challenging myself and raising money for Women V Cancer. So far, I have raised over £10,000 whilst having great fun, seeing new and interesting places and continuing the fight against cancer”. “Helping my Mum at local events instilled my beliefs in the importance of community; taking part and giving back; and has been a major part of my life; so joining Rotary was a continuation of this. Being part of Rotary, meeting new friends, enjoying many social events and raising money to give back locally, for me is the perfect fit. Helping to organise the annual Carnival and Show, which I have done for the last 3 years, was a natural fit, having had experience in event management in my Hotel career. The role of the first female President of BW Rotary will be my next challenge, which I will rise to with the support of my partner Frank, as I encourage more women and men to get involved and join the fun!” This year’s Carnival theme is: ‘SPACE: The Final Frontier’. It’s on Saturday 10th June, so dig out those Darth Vader outfits and join in the fun. I look forward to seeing you there.

A

group of country sport loving friends from the Meon Valley came together to raise funds for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Living in a rural area made them very aware of the benefit of the Air Ambulance . The idea was to raise enough money to run the organisation for a day - a staggering £9000. The event was generously sponsored by Buckland Capital which allowed flyers to be printed and distributed far and wide.Victoria Cobden, Helen Coker, Fiona Axel Berg, Fiona White and Sarah White (no relation) made cakes and persuaded their friends to make cakes, biscuits, sweets and preserves for sale at the event in Winchester on 24 March. Over thirty local businesses also kindly gave vouchers for raffle prizes. Around 1500 home made cakes arrived the day before to be packaged and priced - luckily The Wessex Hotel allowed the friends to use a room to store them overnight. Selling started at 8.30 and by 4.30 nearly every cake was sold - just a few were left and they were given to the local homeless shelter. At the time of going to print just over £9000 has been raised for a worthwhile charity which any one could need at any time. BOTLET MARKET HALL GAINS AND LOSES!

T

he well-known Market Hall at Botley is both winning and losing at the same time! Run by a local charity, and totally reliant on volunteers, the Hall is well used by the local community. Recently it has gained by receiving generous donations from the local Co-Op’s community fund and also the Bugle pub in Botley: Co-Op members have recommended that the Hall is given over £3000 from their community fund, and the Hall Trustees thank all of them! Then Paul and Lorraine, who have recently taken over the local Bugle Pub in Botley have generously donated £200 from a recent wine tasting evening. The Bugle is an excellent local pub/restaurant, recently refurbished by Paul and Lorraine, and they are working hard to build on its reputation as a good “local”. These donations will go towards further improvements to the Hall. Sadly the Hall is losing one of its important users – the Botley Bees Pre-School. Unable to compete with the other early years businesses and attract more children, the Bees is sadly closing. The Trustees who run the Hall are determined that the Hall should continue to be used by children as well as others. Meanwhile they will welcome approaches by clubs, classes or organisations who are looking for premises to hire, especially during the daytime. All they need do is ring 07733553408 to find out more.

A CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH TAKES LOCAL TEAM CHASE KINGS FROM SWANMORE TO ST MARY'S

FILM ON A FARM RETURNS AFTER ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR

A

stunning location nestled in the South Downs National Park. A classic movie. All the locally sourced food and drink you can imagine…what more could you need for a perfect night out under the stars at the unique Outdoor Cinema venue Film on a Farm. And we are delighted to be returning to Droxford after a fabulous season last year. Film on a Farm began in 2015 as a diversification project for local farmer Christopher Horn who is the fourth generation of his family to have lived and worked at their farm in Droxford and wanted to bring something different to the area he loves so much and it has grown from strength to strength ever since. Following the amazingly positive feedback we had from customers at our home farm in Droxford, we have had a massive response from farmers all over the UK keen to diversify and host their own Film on a Farm event. It shows a lot about the current status of the farming sector and the effects that the uncertainty of Brexit has given. Many UK farms currently operate at a loss, and those that do break even or make a profit usually only do because of the subsidy support they receive from Europe. Farmers now face a volatile time with the possibility of significant reductions or even the removal of subsidy, combined with the uncertainty of trade deals which need to be negotiated. The UK produces some of the world's best food, but diversification in to other enterprises has never been so important in these uncertain times ahead. As a result, Film on a Farm is not only screening in Droxford, but also touring the UK including Jaws overlooking the sea near Chichester, The Lion King just outside of Basingstoke and Notting Hill on the downs near Midhurst, all bringing a fantastic night of entertainment to the great British countryside. Whether it’s a night with friends and family or the perfect date night, Film on a Farm has it all. Settle down with a blanket and snuggle up under the stars to watch films such as Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman, Indiana Jones and Spectre. It’s a chance to see what truly breath-taking views we have on our doorstep. If that wasn’t enough to entice you, we will have a locally sourced BBQ courtesy of another Hampshire farmer at Matt’s Hog Roasts, and of course The Tipsy Goose will be there with a fully stocked bar. For more information on how to book tickets, visit www.filmonafarm.co.uk 36

S

aturday side Chase Kings FC, founded in 2005 by manager Rob Sanders, are a local grassroots football club with a difference. The League (Solent Churches Football League) we play in is a Church outreach competition which is keenly contested but has a no swearing respect agenda to support referees. Although we live in Southampton we are not all saints, and this adult League is a work in progress. Supported by Waltham Chase Methodist Church, we play our home games at Swanmore Recreational Ground in the Meon Valley and play a special charity match this month at St Mary's, the home of Southampton Football Club on Wednesday 24th May 2017 at 7pm. It is a one-off event and we are gracing the playing pitch of Southampton FC to have a grand reunion for Kings Legends Past & Present to raise money for our chosen charity, the Countess of Mountbatten Hospice in Southampton. Our young vice captain Luke Haynes lost his mum Tracey to cancer in April 2015 and the hospice in Hedge End did so much to care for her. There will be two games in her memory: The first hour game will feature the Kings' Legends from the last 12 years and the second hour game will see the current Kings squad involved. Admission and car parking is free but donations to the charity in the buckets provided on the night will be appreciated. As a club we are always looking for new adult talent (18+) for our Saturday morning football, so if there is interest in knowing more please get in touch. Community TITCHFIELD FESTIVAL THEATRE ANNOUNCES BRAND NEW STUDIO THEATRE READY FOR ACTION The theatre already has a biomass boiler installed, and has prepared plans to install solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system with the aim of becoming the only fully ‘green’ theatre in Europe.

T

his week, community-driven Titchfield Festival Theatre announced that its brand new studio theatre is ready for action. The new studio is part of extensive renovation work that the theatre is currently undertaking, proudly considering itself ‘the local theatre with big plans’. Upgrades to the theatre venue are extensive, with the theatre planning to show more plays, host more community events and to be entirely self-sufficient.

Kevin Fraser, Artistic Director for Titchfield Festival Theatre says, “We’ve got a packed schedule of performances this year, and the appetite for quality amateur theatre like ours keeps growing. “We’ve created the studio to offer an intimate space for more emotional plays, so the audience is completely immersed and becomes part of the story themselves. All this, as well as holding new ‘Open Mic Nights’ for aspiring new talent with a cash prize for the best act on the night.”

The new studio is built on a mezzanine which allows space to incorporate bar areas on each floor, a cafe seating area, and enough room to house a traditional cinema organ, no less. The intimate atmosphere lends itself to the upcoming performaance of Rhinoceros, written by Eugene Lonesco in 1959. From the Theatre of the Absurd, the play follows how the people of a small French town turn into rhinoceroses and focuses on the central character, Berenger, who avoids the same fate. With cultural significance and links to the upsurge in political beliefs in the run up to World War II, the play explores many emotions and cultural norms of the period. Rhinoceros is showing at the Titchfield Festival Theatre studio from 1st -7th May 2017. Two Open Mic Nights are planned for 8th and 29th April. For more information on the main theatre performances and to book tickets, visit www. titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com or call the box office on 01392 556156.
