It will continue preventive efforts until a negative sample is obtained. The escalated spraying is being targeted at ditches and drains, areas that hold water. Summer not dry enough for these pests

By Elsa Maxey With the intense heat and drought this summer, there has been some noticeable, decreased mosquito activity. But the presence of the pests is known bigtime now with a sample of West Nile virus that was reported last week. Fort Bend County Health and Human Services said a mosquito sample from the Fresno area tested positive for the disease-causing virus. It is the first positive sample in Fort Bend County in several years, according to the agency’s

By LeaAnne Klentzman The Travis High School junior varsity football team has suffered their biggest loss since the school opened. Early Friday morning, after practice, five Travis High School junior varsity football players left the school and decided to take a swim in the Brazos River near Richmond.

The fun ended when 17 year old Benjamin Ola went under and was not seen again. According to Richmond Police Sergeant Lowell Neinast, Ola and his teammates had gone into the murky waters of the Brazos River near the end of Blaisdale Road not far off FM 359, just outside of Richmond. owned aircraft at the Sugar Land Regional Airport. An eye witness who saw him a matter of a few feet away said it was Attorney Jose Baez. She said he was walking in and out of the airport dressed in an orange shirt and khaki shorts. In plain view of TV camera crews from the media photographing him, he reportedly said he wanted some privacy and was looking for a restaurant. Any guesses about his coming over to see Anthony, who possibly could be in hiding in our part of the state? According to news accounts, Anthony vanished from public view since being released from prison last month following her acquittal on murder charges in the death of her 2-year-old daughter. Reports from Florida indicate that Anthony must return to Orlando no later than Aug. 26, at noon to serve a year's probation for check fraud.

It seems these two were charged with cheating the citizens of El Paso county out of “the right to the honest services of elected members of the El Paso County Commissioner’s Court,” said an FBI spokesperson. Just how much money do they want to spend?......At the board of judges July meeting, all the Fort Bend County judges passed a resolution to wit: Discuss and take appropriate action concerning the possibility of car covering for county elected official parking. The elected officials they are talking about is themownselves. And the place where they want to build the covered parking? Why it’s the new Justice Center across the street from the jail on Ransom Road where Fort Bend taxpayers have just spent around $7580 million to have all the courts in one building. That includes a next-door, several-story parking garage, which allows plenty of covered parking for judges, juries and all matter of employees. The county wasn’t able to give employees a raise this year, and yet we have judges who want a cover for their cars, which they probably don’t park in their garages at home in the first place. It would cost about $400,000 to pave some more land and cover it for their cars. There have been complaints that the parking garage is always full. This may be the case but if the judges would agree to call panels of jury on more than one day a week, there would be sufficient parking. Then the judges point out there is not sufficient security in the parking garage. If they would take off their “state judge” license plates from their vehicles, it might be safer. Nobody would know who drove what vehicle. And if the Justice Center parking garage isn’t safe right across from the sheriff’s department, I

don’t know what will be. A side note to every judge being in the new Justice Center is that all judges are now housed in the same building and any judicial antics are exposed to all there. Judge Bud Childers, who we have written about before, is showing his true self. The way I heard it, he came storming out his courtroom, black robes flying, making him look for all the world like an avenging hound of hell, busting into another judge’s office and telling them to get quiet because it was disturbing him! Judge Childers, who we’ve often called “Bud Lite” has heretofore been in a building all by himself. Now his peers will get to witness his actions. Water rationing.....Looks like all the cities are getting around to mandatory water rationing. It’s about time and I think it should have been done earlier. Most have had voluntary water rationing and we know how that works. Pumping all of the water from the ground without a replenishing rainfall causes subsidence and I’ve already noticed a cracked tile in my kitchen. I suspect my foundation is sinking. This rainfall amount is about the worse I’ve ever seen in Fort Bend. I lived through the drought in West Texas in the 50s when my daddy burned through all our college money trying to keep his cows alive. It resulted in my mother eventually having to open a beauty shop to send my brother and me to college. (Heaven forbid that we ever did a lick of work!) Of course, there wasn’t a lot of jobs for young people then either. It was before the fast food era. We had such dust storms we

had to hang wet sheets on our doors and windows to protect us during the worst of it. We could see the dust storms coming across the flat land, big red or black swollen clouds according to which way the wind was blowing. I swear I saw Lubbock blow by one day. I remember when the drought was finally broken. My daddy stayed up all night, eating popcorn and looking out the window. I asked mother why he stayed up all night and she said he was afraid if he took his eyes off the rain, it would stop. It took us a long time to recover from that era, both our land and us, mentally. I keep hearing.....disturbing things about the city justice system in Stafford. A person called me this week, and it’s not the first complaint I’ve heard about this very thing, and was disturbed that he had asked for a jury trial in traffic court and it had been reset four times. That makes me and the complainant think they are just trying to wear him down and get him to pay the fine and go away. This person said not only was the judge insulting, but the prosecutor was as well. This person told me he had to take off work every time he had a court date, only to get there and it be reset. The person said they would never spend another penny in Stafford and tell their friends the same. This person said he knew that times were tough and cities were trying to increase revenue, but he said the ticket he got was so egregious he decided to fight it and he had the video to prove his case. This person was so upset about the latest reset, he looked me up on the newspaper website and

called me about it. Like I said, this is not the first time I’ve gotten this complaint. Kudos.....You probably read in this newspaper that Classic Chevrolet recently won some big award as the “dealership of the year.” I want to take a little space right here to tell you about how Don Kerstetter took over that dealership, which had a terrible reputation when it went by another name. A relative young man, Don still had lots of experience

in the car business, and he took over that dealership determined to make it successful. He moved his family here and put a lot of hard work and determination into doing just that and it has yielded the right results. Don always has a happy smile, always is upbeat about not only his car dealership and the car business, but Fort Bend County in general. Anything you ask him to do, he tries to make it happen and usually does.

I'm Sick and Tired... I’m sick and tired of the Social Security recipients saying ‘they paid into it, so they are entitled to Michael Fredrickson receive it.’ I hate to break this news to you, but you are not entitled to one cent. You did not pay into anything. You merely paid a tax. Yes, it can

be broken out on your pay stub separately but that does not mean doodle squat. That amount itemized on your pay stub is not placed into an account with your name on it. Therefore it is a tax - plain and simple. That is the amount you are taxed to give freebees to senior citizens. That amount is not figured based on what it will cost to put food on your table when you turn 62. It is the amount needed to provide money to TODAY’S seniors.

That amount is deducted from your check because our politicians have promised to give every single person 62-years-old or older approximately $1,200 per month for the rest of their natural lives. In other words, that is the tax you have to pay for the politicians to keep getting the seasoned citizen vote (vote buying). The first year that Social Security was established, benefits were paid for an average of five years. Today, the average payout is 20 years. Where in the U.S. Constitution does it say that workers should pay for any individual’s retirement lifestyle for any length of time? Of course when Social Security was established by the Social-ist, Franklin D. Roosevelt, working people probably only had to pay a dollar a month TAX to pay for those current retired persons

See us online www.FortBendStar.com

that were only going to live five more years. Social Security was supposed to be a safety net, not a retirement plan. Since it was established, forward-looking, hard-working Americans have discovered this thing called the 401K, which is a retirement plan. That is supposed to pay for food on your table, your RV, your other travel plans, etc. So, why are we paying those seasoned citizens that did plan for retirement a Social Security check? In the not too distant future we won’t. In fact I hear political pundits bring it up frequently. This is known as meanstesting and this is the future of the Social Security program. The first thing a retired person will start squealing like a stuck pig is ‘I paid into the system, so I am entitled to get a check’. Relax! This won’t go

into effect for anyone on social security or anyone 40 or older. As I stated earlier, you paid a tax and that tax should not and will not (when they eventually start means-testing) benefit those of us that chose to establish a retirement plan that does not rely on a $1,200 check each month, courtesy of current workers. In other words, you will not be able to opt-out of Social Security and provide for your own retirement. We will all have to pay the TAX but if you have a well-funded retirement plan, then you don’t get a Social Security check. You see, they say we will have an effective tax rate of over 90% in about 20 years in order to pay social security and Medicare benefits to every retired person at the same rate we pay today. That is not going to happen. Either we slash every-

body’s social security benefits DRAMATICALLY or we only hand it out to those that really need a safety net. If benefits are slashed enough to keep everybody on the dole, then the people that truly need a safety net will not receive enough to keep them from eating dog food. Sugar Land Police asking for public assistance in robbery case By LeaAnne Klentzman Sugar Land Police are asking for the public’s help in locating the man wanted for a home invasion robbery in the Ashford Lakes subdivision in late July. Police have identified one suspect, Demarcus Johnson, a 20-year-old Houston man, in connection Demarcus Johnson with an aggravated robbery in the Ashford Lakes subdivision. According to authorities, Johnson should be considered armed and dangerous. He has the roman numerals five and nine tattooed on the front of his neck. Johnson is wanted in connection with a July 22 afternoon robbery where a group of black men forced entry through the back door of a home in the 12000 block of Ashford Green Court. During their crime spree a 19-year-old woman told police she was held at gun point by one man while others went through the house looking for money. When the ransacking

and looting was over, reportedly at least six intruders left the woman and fled the scene in a newer model sedan loaded with the family’s electronics and other valuables. The man who held the teen at gunpoint was described as tall, wearing a long sleeve white t-shirt and black workout pants. He reportedly asked the victim for the specific location of money they believed was in the house. A second suspect was described as wearing a brown short sleeve t-shirt and was carrying a large tote bag. He was described as thin and bald. Yet another suspect was

described as short and muscular, wearing a short sleeve navy t-shirt and jeans. He appeared to be 20-25 years old with a square face, thin beard, and short hair. He had big eyes, a flat and wide nose and visible nostrils and also had a large carry-on bag. Anyone with information should call the Sugar Land Police Department at (281) 275-2540. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is pleased to announce it has achieved Pathway to Excellence® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Pathway to Excellence designation identifies the elements of work environments where nurses can flourish. The designation substantiates the professional satisfaction of nurses at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and identifies it as one of the best places to work in the country. “This recognition represents a great deal of hard work and a true commitment to nursing excellence,” said Janet Leatherwood, Chief Nursing Officer at Methodist Sugar Land. “Our nurses are at the heart of everything we do and they deserve to be honored for their unrelenting compassion and care for our patients.” The Pathway to Excellence designation is granted based on the confirmed presence of characteristics known as “The Pathway to Excellence Criteria.” For an organization to earn the Pathway to Excellence distinction, it must successfully undergo a thorough review process that documents foundational quality initiatives in creating a positive work environment — as defined by nurses and supported by research. These initiatives must be present in the facility’s practices, policies, and culture. Nurses in the organization verify the presence of the criteria in the organization through participation in a completely confidential online survey. As a Pathway to Excellence® designated organization, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is committed to nurses, to what nurses identify as important to their practice, and to valuing nurses’ contributions in the workplace. This designation confirms to the public that nurses working at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital know their efforts are supported. The honor encourages other nurses to join their colleagues in this desirable and

2nd Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee Community Challenge set ties range from $100 to $5,000. As a sponsor at the $100 level, donors will choose a letter in our A-Bee-C’s for Literacy Alphabet. Businesses will claim the letter of their business and have that letter represent their business. The “Literacy Alphabet” will be on display at the event. Additionally, there will be an alphabet for individuals to show their support of the Council or honor an important person in their lives. If you have never donated to the Literacy Council, now

is your chance! There are other various opportunities to sponsor this event, and all proceeds benefit the life changing programs of the Literacy Council. Whether you are interested in supporting Literacy by sponsoring the event, or you are interested in spelling, but can’t form a team – contact us! We are looking for spellers AND sponsors! If you are interested in competing against other local spellers, please call 281.240.8181 or visit www.grownupbee.com.

2011 Property Tax Rates in City of Meadows Place This notice concerns the 2011 property tax rates for City of Meadows Place. It presents information about three tax rates. Last year’s tax rate is the actual tax rate the taxing unit used to determine property taxes last year. This year’s effective tax rate would impose the same total taxes as last year if you compare properties taxed in both years. This year’s rollback tax rate is the highest tax rate the taxing unit can set before taxpayers start rollback procedures. In each case these rates are found by dividing the total amount of taxes by the tax base (the total value of taxable property) with adjustments as required by state law. The rates are given per $100 of property value. Last year’s tax rate: Last year’s operating taxes Last year’s debt taxes Last year’s total taxes Last year’s tax base Last year’s total tax rate

She is also an Ambassador for the American Heart and the American Stroke Association.

Fort Bend ISD responds to taxpayers mold concerns...................................... from page 1 See Although mold was found, it was not in a 25 foot contiguous area that would require professional mold remediation. A little confusing is that while the school district indicates a suspect material was reported in the band room the week of Aug. 1, it also states that no one reported any concerns about mold to school officials or to the District’s Auxiliary Services Department until a staff member sent an email to the principal on Tuesday, Aug. 9, which was the following week. This implies that it wasn’t until after the state inspection that any cleaning took place on the part of the school district’s inhouse cleaning staff, since neither school officials nor cleaning staff was aware of any mold at the high school. But someone was aware of a suspect material.  What is called into question is the assertion on the part of the school district implying an after-the-state inspection clean up, irrespective of an eye witness account alleging it took place before then, corroborated by a “whistle-blowing” call to the "Star" the day of the inspection on Aug. 4 about what, from the taxpayer’s perspective, was tantamount to a perceived cover up on the part of the school district. Then, what seems to have annoyed FBISD is the reported statement that an in-service was moved from Austin High School to Clements High School reportedly due to the mold issues.  It was due to completion repairs of the Austin High School air conditioning system, maintains the disLEGALS

trict, “and for no other reasons.” The in-service was scheduled at Austin High School on Aug. 3, and Porter said that all three A/C chillers at the high school were fully operational by Aug. 1. It is possible the air conditioning system may have still needed repair. The question about the inservice being relocated was not asked of the school district, because it had already not responded to many others.  For the responses and information the school district chose to pro-

vide, they were furnished after an expressed deadline, which has required this follow-up. In the end, the district said staff members of its Auxiliary Services Department are closely working with the Austin High School custodial staff to clean classrooms and carpets, and wash walls appropriately. Air conditioning systems coils have been cleaned, new filters installed, which are also routinely replaced. In this case, replaced again as an added measure, reports the district.

West Niles Virus found in Fresno mosquito sample....... from page 1 broken hot tubs or fountains, and puddle areas due to runoff or overwatering. DUSK/DAWN times are to be avoided; try to stay indoors during this time when infected mosquitoes are most active. DRESS in long sleeves and pants when outside; for extra protection, spray thin clothing with repellent. DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-

toluamide) in insect repellent is optimal; follow label instructions and wear repellent when outdoors; consider sprays made for yards and other outdoor areas. On the bright side, there’s at least one fun thing about mosquitoes out here--the Skeeters, Sugar Land’s new minor league team mascot with quite a formidable looking stinger…watch out for this one in a good way!

Asperger Syndrome: Treatment Options

Asperger syndrome is a childhood social and behavioral condition that is classified as a type of autism. Changes in social behaviors are the defining signs of Aspergers, including decreased interest in socializing or inability to socialize with others. Behavioral differences of children with Aspergers may include specific interests, intolerance to changes in routines, and difficulty detecting subtleties of language, such as sarcasm. Children diagnosed with Aspergers may also be affected by other neurological conditions, such as anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or depression. Depending on the child’ s age and specific symptoms related to the condition, medications may be prescribed. Disruptive behaviors in children with autism in general may be treated with risperidone (Risperdal) or methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin). Risperidone is an antipsychotic medication. Methylphenidate works by stimulating the central nervous system. For anxiety, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor ., such as fluoxetine (Prozac) or sertraline (Zoloft), may be prescribed. For hyperactivity or inattention issues, atomoxetine (Strattera) or clonidine (Duraclon) may be prescribed. Children with Aspergers may be more susceptible to side effects of medications.

final game last week and is in Michigan now for the Junior League World Series. It is a feat that has not been accomplished by a Rosenberg LL team in exactly 40 years. It is a big, big deal. In the regional tournament final, SS Jaxon Williams led a team wide defensive attack that gave up only 3 runs and made no errors. Williams made plays that halted the rallies of the Louisiana team time in and time out. Rosenberg was by far the most talented team. They averaged more than 11 runs and 13 hits per game. Jeremy Arriaga, hit 2 monster shots that cleared the bases early in the game. One of them, a triple, was measured at over 375 ft. To give you an idea of how far that is, the foul poles at Minute Maid Park measure 315 ft. Folks, word on the street is that this kid can slaughter a baseball consistently. Umpire Bobby Zepeda, who also was a Rosenberg Little Leaguer back in his day, traveled to Midland with the team and had this to say about the game. “From the 1st pitch the boys had brought their leather. You could see it in their eyes. The confidence level was high.” Let’s not leave out star pitcher Cody Williams, who threw a one hitter

Motorist to be given option to pay toll for continuous traffic By Elsa Maxey The shovels in the ground last Thursday are a clear indication of Fort Bend County’s announcement of the construction of tolled overpasses on the Grand Parkway to be built in two phases. Motorists will have the option to use them and pay a toll for continuous, high speed vehicular traffic use, or they may stay on the frontage roads and pay no toll on the roads already in use. FOOT FACTS by Dr. Eric Tepper BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS CANCER OF THE FOOT

Foot cancer weakens the foot bones and can cause inflammation and tenderness of the joints. It is a malignant tumor, and its presence results in the destruction of bone cells. Some bone cancers spread to the bone and others originate in the bone. In some cases, the bone or surrounding tissues may develop a lump. Generally, children and teenagers are more likely to develop cancer of the bone. Three percent of skin cancers, or malignant melanoma, occur in the feet. Tumors that form in the bone underlying the toenail are also forms of foot cancer. There are many approaches utilized to treat foot cancers. They are contingent upon the location and severity of the condition and include radiation and chemotherapy. Today’s column on foot cancer has been brought to you as a public service by our entire staff. Of considerable significance in caring for feet of any age, or any gender, is choosing the right podiatrist. Armed driveway robbery hits the Village of Oak Lakes By LeaAnne Klentzman Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in the 16400 block of Noblewood Court in the Village of Oak Lakes subdivision in the northeast quadrant of Fort Bend County about 7:45 p.m., Monday evening to investigate an armed robbery. According to Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel, the female victim told officers she had just pulled into her garage when a black male subject wearing a white mask over his face walked into her garage holding a semiautomatic handgun. Haenel said the victim’s husband was also in the garage at the time of the robbery. According to Haenel, the armed intruder ordered both the husband and wife to the floor of the garage then demanded her purse, jewelry and car keys. The suspect was last seen fleeing south on Noblewood Court in the direction of Oyster Creek

Tragic end to an after practice swim..... ................... from page 1 Neinast said Ola’s friends told authorities that they had come to the river to cool off and swim after practice. That was the last time they saw him. Minutes later when they could not find him, they called 911 for help. Ola’s body was recov-

The suspect was described as a black male, about 5' 10" with a medium to heavy build. He was wearing a white t-shirt and green shorts. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-4665.

who devote so much of their time and talent to our philanthropies, especially these five women – Doris, Pat, Cari, Judy and Lucia – our community is a better place,” said Fredrickson. “Fort Bend Focus Magazine is proud to honor their commitment to Fort Bend County and be able to give back to the community that has so graciously supported us.” See JEWELS, page 20

Fort Bend Focus Magazine, the county’s premier magazine showcasing people, places and happenings, is pleased to announce their fourth annual event honoring five extraordinary women whose contributions to our community make them real gems. Fort Bend Focus Honors the JEWELS of Fort Bend is scheduled for Thursday, September 22, 2011 with a premier Luncheon and Style Show honoring this year’s Fort Bend JEWELS – five Joyous, Extraordinary Women Enriching Lives. Fort Bend Focus Magazine is pleased to introduce the five JEWELS selected for 2011: Doris Gurecky, Pat Hebert, Cari Middaugh, Judy Schmid and Lucia Street. From the Fort Bend Junior Service League to the Literacy Council of Fort Bend to the Richmond State School, these women are all committed to making our community the best place to live, work and raise our families. Fort Bend Focus Magazine is pleased to recognize their efforts while doing something that they all feel passionate about: supporting our community. Proceeds from Fort Bend Focus Honors the JEWELS of Fort Bend will be invested back into our community by supporting a vital organization: The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County. This non-profit organization’s mission is to end intergenerational cycles of illiteracy in Fort Bend County by improving adult literacy skills and generating community-wide literacy awareness. Formed in 1987, the Literacy Council serves adults who have made the commitment to help themselves change their lives. Well-trained and supported volunteers work one-on-one with adults needing help in basic literacy and on a small group basis in English language skills. Since 1987, the Literacy Council has served over 23,000 adults and has donated 591,000 tutoring and learning lab hours to assist with decreasing the 24% rate of individuals lacking basic literacy skills in Fort Bend County. (National Center for Education Statistics (NCES); January 2009) “As a publisher, literacy is vital to success of not only our business, but to the success of our community as a whole. With the illiteracy rate of Fort Bend County exceeding 20%, the valuable work of the Literacy Council is making a difference in our work force,” said Lisa Fredrickson, publisher of Fort Bend Focus Magazine. Since 1987, the Literacy Council has returned approximately $15,000,000 to the community in tutoring hours alone. “This year, the Literacy Council will spend approximately 22,000 hours tutoring citizens, and we are honored to assist with this much-needed and worthwhile program.” While the event will be the highlight of Fort Bend Focus Honors the JEWELS of Fort Bend, the September magazine will feature a beautiful spread showcasing photos and biographies of the five JEWELS along with sponsors of the event. Distributed directly to Fort Bend homes each month, as well as in rack distribution at businesses and retailers throughout the county, the special Fort Bend Focus Honors the JEWELS of Fort Bend section will pay homage to these special women and their community service. “Because of the efforts of the wonderful, caring individuals
