Union Pacific responds to questions about a second track being added By Karen Daniels

In conclusion to this threepart series on the second track being added, effecting traffic flow for the citizens of Missouri City, Stafford, and Sugar Land, we spoke to the source, Union Pacific, to go on record with the future of the 90A Corridor. Joe Adams, Vice-President with Public Affairs for the Southern Region said, "The expected increase in trains will be only 3 to 4% on an annual basis once the second track is added."

New Prudential Real Estate survey says Americans are optimistic about home ownership A new national survey released by Prudential Real Estate shows that Americans are significantly more optimistic about home ownership than they were a year ago. According to the survey, a full 60 percent of Americans have favorable views toward the real estate market. That is up eight points since last year. “It is clear that consumer confidence is on the upswing nationally, and all indications are that things are just as

positive, if not more so, for Houston,” said Mark Woodroof, partner with Prudential Gary Greene, Realtors. “In Houston, year-to-date single-family home sales are up 13 percent over last year, and dollar volume of homes sold for the same period is up 10 percent,” added Woodroof. “There is more buyer demand, as indicated by the number of contracts written, which is up nine percent over this time last year.”

Bench Making is an ongoing project by Women’s Council of Realtors

WATCH FOR THEM IN 2012

Marilyn Eiland, also a partner with Prudential Gary Greene, Realtors, said that more good news comes from a new report from real estate investment services firm Marcus & Millichap. “This report projects that Houston will add 91,000 jobs this year, a surge that could stimulate demand for commercial real estate development and, ultimately, home sales,” said Eiland. “The national Prudential Real Estate survey reflects what our sales professionals see in the Houston area every day – that home ownership is important to consumers and that their confidence in the housing market is strengthening,” added Eiland. “Our sales are up and our agents are very busy.” More details from the national Prudential Real Estate survey: • With interest rates at historically low levels,

96 percent agree or somewhat agree that now is a good time to buy. • A full 70 percent of respondents have some degree of confidence that property values will improve over the next two years; with an eight-point increase in those very confident or confident compared to last year. • 63 percent believe that real estate is a good investment despite the recent market volatility; that is up 11 points from last year. Prudential Gary Greene, Realtors is the top listing and selling residential real estate firm in Houston, as well as the oldest in the city. Partners of the firm, Marilyn Eiland and Mark Woodroof, manage the day-to-day operations of Prudential Gary Greene, Realtors, which now has 20 company-owned offices in the Houston Metropolitan area. Lactose Intolerance

A condition called lactose intolerance is characterized by difficulty digesting foods containing lactose, which mainly involve dairy products. Lactose is a sugar contained in milk. The condition occurs to varying degrees by ethnicity, affecting approximately 10% to 20% of Caucasians, up to 75% of African Americans, and over 90% of some Asian cultures. Consumption of any product containing milk may lead to unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms in affected persons, including abdominal pain and diarrhea. A deficiency or abnormality of the enzyme lactase, with functions to breakdown lactose, can lead to the condition. Persons affected by the condition are encouraged to decrease lactose in the diet, maintain adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, and to maintain adequate nutrition through alternative sources. Milk and ice cream contain a high lactose content. Persons who are particularly susceptible to the symptoms of lactose intolerance may choose to read labels, taking care to avoid items containing milk or any other milk product, and whey. Calcium carbonate (Tums) can be taken daily as a calcium supplement. Lactaid (lactase) is an enzyme supplement that can be taken before meals containing dairy to reduce the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Other lactase preparations include DairyEase, Lactrol, and LactAce.

Pumping for feedback at gas station GAS continued from page 1

had been a misunderstanding. Apparently, one of the local area TV stations announced the congressman’s event backto-back with a gas station promotion offering free gas. And, when other statements relating to Congressman Olson’s event were also made along the lines of “need to fill up?” it’s no wonder there was confusion. “Gas prices have sky rocketed due to global instability,” said Olson in the press release announcing his gas pumping appearance. Up by “close to 50 cents since the beginning of the year,” he said. In response to the "Star’s" question about how much it cost him to fuel up his vehicle, “I’m a Texan, I drive a pickup truck,” he said. “I’ve got a 24 gallon tank and it costs me close to $100 dollars,” noting that he spends more like in the lower 90’s or in the upper 80’s. Will he buy a Volt? No, he said. The Chevy Volt is an electric, plug-in vehicle

representing advanced technology for starting to get off fossil fuels, according to reports, which also state that plans call for a million of the vehicles to be on the road by 2015. Sugar Land resident Mike Mulcahy, who was at the gas station fueling up told Congressman Olson that there are natural gas resources in the U.S. not being used, and “we have a lot of oil reserves in other places that we are not pursuing.” A young man with whom he spoke, “works at the local Pappasito’s” in the vicinity of the gas station, “he grew up in this area and likes to go fishing down in Galveston, but he can’t go anymore, because he said, I can’t afford the gas and it’s a pretty good haul from here to Galveston, and that’s just one example.” Congressman Olson said about a floral delivery person that “she’s over in Rosenberg/ Richmond,” and used to make all the deliveries at once “and she can’t do that anymore

because she’s burning too much fuel” in her own car. “We have the solutions here if we just step forward and develop them.” Endorsing the Keystone project that he said would have oil coming from Canada to the Port of Houston, Congressman Olson also said 4,000 American jobs would be created. When he met with the dozen or so at the gas station for about 45 minutes, his message essentially was about supporting the opening of more domestic resources to stabilize gas prices, creating jobs and reducing reliance on Middle East oil. “We need to tell the government to get out of the way,” and help develop all the fuel resources that are currently available in the U.S., he said. Olson sits on the House Energy & Commerce Committee and is a member of the House Energy Action Team. Holding the office since 2008, he is running for re-election and faces Republican contender, Barbara Carlson, for Texas’ U.S. Congressional 22nd seat.

maintain their speeds of 50mph, is more efficient for UPRR and for vehicle traffic." Furthermore, it is the opinion of Union Pacific that the widening of the Panama Canal will decrease traffic along the 90A rail. At this time, most cargo ships dock at the Port of Los Angeles and travel west by train, moving through our Cities to reach Houston. Some ships will bypass Los Angeles, journey the Canal and continue to the Port of Houston. This cargo will not need to travel through our neighborhood, according to UPRR, because from this point they will travel either north to St. Louis and Chicago or east to New Orleans. However, if cargo arriving in our Ports should need to go to El Paso, our lines will be used. As far as creating quiet zones, Mr. Adams said that will be up to local jurisdictions as to how they handle their intersections. The RFA has set regulations that one of these three options must be in

place: 1) Add a bridge/underpass, which is the most expensive option, but provides less interruption for cars; 2) Install quad gates, which are currently used at the Eldridge intersection; or 3) Place a sixty foot barrier down the middle of the road, length-wise, separating the roads. UPRR confirms that the commuter train was not practical and will not be allowed on the tracks and has informed officials of this decision for the past four to five years. The dates of construction have changed slightly. Phase 1 - West Junction to Missouri City - which consists of 3.8 miles, will begin this summer. Phase 2 - Missouri City to Sugar Land - which consists of 6.1 miles, Mr. Adams predicts, will not start until 2013.

Locally, officials are hopeful that the “Hog Out” program will be funded again this fall, and that Fort Bend County will increase its participation and end up as the number one county eradicator. Feral hogs are reported to be a costly nuisance to agricultural and wildlife habitats. They also represent a serious threat to the traveling public, report officials, noting that the wild hogs find their way into urban areas destroying residents’ yards, public parks,

Those on the fringes of open land areas, including residents in outlying parts of Missouri City, contacted city officials in the past about needing help with issues of wild boar persistently rooting up their lawns and tearing down fences. Animal control, the police department and other entities were looped in about the problem, now clearly under the management of the Texas Department of Agriculture with the participating help of counties like Fort Bend. The Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Fort Bend County may be contacted at 281- 342-3034. The office is located at 1402 Band Road, Suite 100 in Rosenberg.

We spoke to Mayor Scarcella a final time for his rebuttal since it was his original statements that launched this series. He is standing by his prediction that in five years the rail traffic will increase to sixty cars per day. And lastly, he had this to say on the topic of the quiet zones. "When they (UPRR) say quiet zones are 'up to the local jurisdiction' what they are really saying is that it is up to us to pay for them. Union Pacific makes the noise, but we get to deal with the problem."

A Closer Look at Your Colon: 5 Tests that can Spot Cancer Take advantage of free seminar & colorectal screening kit

for Fort Bend Pol. Ad paid by John Minchew for Sheriff Campaign, Cheryl Minchew Treasurer, 1831 Pitts Rd., Richmond, TX 77406

Has your doctor suggested you get screened for colon or rectal cancer? Maybe you

have a family history of the disease. Or perhaps you’ve reached an age that makes this screening a smart move. Experts say if everyone ages 50 and older had regular colorectal cancer screenings, at least 60% of deaths from these cancers could be avoided. “The majority of colorectal cancers begin with a polyp — a growth in the colon or rectal lining,” says Ali Mahmood, M.D., board certified, fellowship trained colon and rectal surgeon on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Many screening tests are aimed at finding these polyps so they can be removed before they become cancerous. Less commonly, cancer may develop from flat, slightly depressed areas of colon tissue, called nonpolypoid lesions. Some screening tests can detect these lesions, too.” Colonoscopy. Virtual colonoscopy. This test uses computerized tomography (special X-rays) to assemble pictures of the colon and rectum into detailed images that can show abnormalities. Preparation to cleanse the colon is required; but the test is less invasive than a standard colonoscopy and doesn’t require sedation. But if the test finds something suspicious, you’ll need a traditional colonoscopy to confirm the finding and get a biopsy. Fecal occult blood tests (FOBT). These tests analyze a small stool sample to detect trace amounts of blood. Finding

ongratulations!! You have finished all your breast cancer treatments, and now you are ready to celebrate being cancer free and take that well deserved vacation. Well good for you. You should go and enjoy yourself 100%!! But before you take off in the big blue sky, let me tell you that I have seen many clients come to my office after taking there long awaited trip, only to have the onset of lymphedema when they return. This could have been avoided if they had worn compression garments. It all has to do with the change in the cabin pressure as you go from the ground to 35,000 feet. During flight, cabin pressure decreases from the atmospheric pressure found at sea level to the lower pressure found between 6000 and 8000 feet above sea level. Changes in fluid production in the tissues occur when the external pressures exerted on the limb are changed. Diminished pressure in the airplane cabin will result in a decrease in the fluid moved into the lymphatic system. The use of compression garments (armsleeve and gauntlet or glove) will provide external pressure on the limb. Women at risk for lymphedema are individuals who have NOT yet displayed signs or symptoms. This includes women who have undergone removal of lymph nodes or radiation therapy which increases the risk for developing lymphedema. At risk individuals have altered lymphatic function that may impede the body’s ability to take up excess fluids. Individuals at risk should pay close attention to changes in sensations of their extremities, such as heaviness, fullness, or aching that may signal the onset of lymphedema from an airline flight. Women who are at risk for lymphedema should take precautions when flying and should consider compression to the affected limb. A medical compression garment is recommended and should be sized by a experienced and qualified lymphedema therapist. Wearing an armsleeve and gauntlet is an inexpensive and effective way to prevent lymphedema. At H.O.P.E. LYMPHEDEMA TREATMENT CENTER we are here to help. We do not want you to get lymphedema, so prevention is always key. It only takes a few minutes to measure and fit for compression garments. H.O.P.E. distributes Jobst, Mediven, Juzo, and for the more fashion conscious women, we carry Lymphedivas. Please call our office to set up a fitting time. We are here to help. To learn more about the Prevention, Treatment and Management of Lymphedema, please visit our website at WWW. HOPELYMPHEDEMA.COM. Our goal is to make a difference in your life.
