Stafford MSD school construction could come down to the wire There is some concern among Stafford MSD top administrators that the construction timeline for the school campuses will come down to the wire with the start of the Fall 2013/2014 school year. The $49.9 million dollar bond that was approved in May of 2011 is nearing

completion. As of the February 2012 board meeting, there were 168 days left for the bond deadline with 58% of the job completed. Much of the work and renovations left will be finished over the summer, once the students are out of school. The unpredictability of what lies behind some of the walls is the concern. Anyone

who's renovated their home knows about the surprises that can be found along the way. The condition of the plumbing and electricity won't truly be realized until the first days of summer break. There's reason to be optimistic. All of the SMSD, continued on page 8

The grandfather told deputies they heard a pop sound and then he observed his 9-year-old grandson grab his right leg in pain.” Further investigation by the grandfather revealed the boy had been hit by a gunshot. "It is certainly a marketing campaign," he added. Shuster said after Thompson turned down the first offer, "We did some calculations on the back of a napkin and decided that four and a half million would probably hit the spot."

Thompson agreed to a second meeting with Shuster but had a proposition of his own. “I said, Why don't you relocate here and for every dollar that you save in taxes you can donate 50 percent to charity,” Thompson said. SugarDaddie.com declined Thompson's offer. The web site has pro-positioned at least two other cities with the word "sugar" in their name.

Two Fort Bend men in hot water for medical scams  By LeaAnne Klentzman

A Richmond man entered a guilty plea and charges still are pending against his Sugar Land co-conspirator for scams. United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced Monday that Joseph Edem, 53, of Richmond, has been convicted of conspiracy to commit health care fraud relating to medically unnecessary diagnostic testing and physical therapy. Originally, Edem was indicted

along with former doctor Donald Gibson II, 56, of Sugar Land. Edem’s legal problems stem from his operation of medical clinics. According to federal prosecutors, those clinics were operated in other individual names in an effort to conceal Edem’s financial interest in the businesses. In Monday’s plea deal, Edem admitted that he conspired to cause the submission of false claims to the Medicare and Medicaid programs and share in

the proceeds. Edem further admitted to having paid patient recruiters for referring Medicare/Medicaid beneficiaries, as well as, having paid Medicare beneficiaries for showing up at the medical clinics. In the indictment, his coconspirator, Donald Gibson II, of Sugar Land, is alleged to have prescribed, and authorized medically unnecessary diagnostic tests and other procedures which SCAMS, continued on page 8

Cultural sophistication

2013 International Festival of Fort Bend set for March 24 at Stafford Centre Russian born and educated Oksana Chernuk is no stranger to the International Festival of Fort Bend, or this area for that matter. She’s from a village in Odessa, Ukraine, and will once again be staging performances at the Stafford Centre for the annual event to be held on Sunday, March 24 from noon to 6 p.m. One of the major differences this time…she’ll be doing it as an American. She became a

U.S. citizen about a year ago. A dancer by profession, she’s the artistic director of the nonprofit arts and educational Sunrise International Dance Company, which she owns and operates in Houston. She first came to this country, actually to Houston in 1995, and stayed. “Her dance troupe will be

doing several numbers that will add sophistication to our international festival with this world class performing group,” said Nazy Khadivian, the festival coordinator. “Our students in the dance studio are all ages and we are able to feature a diverse array of high quality dancers,” adds Oskana. The dance company also

has outreach programs designed to introduce public school children to dance, and it relies on contributions towards this aim. Features of next month’s international festival will include a Russian winter dance, “a slow one,” said Oskana. The other one, a spring dance, is a “fast one,” and there’s also a snow storm number drawing attention to blue and white costumes that visually convey the ice and cold winters of Oskana’s heartland. “These are unique dances of Old Russia,” said Oksana, who also performs and teaches flamenco, Irish, Egyptian, jazz, ballroom, tap and other classic dance styles. She said that for the Russian performances, dancers have to be strong physically, especially the young men in light of the demanding and powerful agility called for. Having also served as a pageant consultant, Oskana said her performances have been described as “electrifying,”

Did you know that only 10% of Texas' attorneys are board certified? With more than 70,000 licensed attorneys in our state, only 7,000 are board certified. Congratulations to Stafford attorney, Ronique Bastine Robinson, who is now part of this elite group. By the age of nine Ms. Robinson knew she wanted to become a lawyer and follow in her father's footsteps. "After being a lawyer for a few years, my passion grew for helping people and assisting those who I believed had been wronged. Fighting for families is something I'm very motivated about." In order to gain this distinction, a lawyer must be licensed for at least five years, devote required time to that specialty for three years, attend continuing education classes, achieve a successful evaluation by fellow lawyers and judges, and pass a six-hour written examination. Robinson is a senior staff member at Bastine & Associates and plans to expand her practice. In addition to family law, she specializes in environmental and business litigation opportunities. She is also the Associate Municipal Judge for the City of Stafford. "The impact the certification will have is tremendous," Robinson explained. Man robbed in driveway By LeaAnne Klentzman

A New Territory man was robbed at gunpoint in his driveway in the 700 block of Dew Bridge Court, Thursday morning, February 20. The man told responding deputies that morning, about 10 a.m., he returned home after forgetting his wallet. Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said, “Upon his return,

when he was getting out of his vehicle, he was confronted by a black male wearing an orange baseball cap who was holding a small handgun. The suspect demanded cash, and the victim complied.” With cash in hand, the suspect got into a small white car and drove eastbound on Dew Bridge Drive. The case remains under investigation.

Fourteen FBISD Presidential Scholar Candidates named Fourteen Fort Bend ISD students have been selected by the U. S. Department of Education as candidates for the Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates for the Scholars Program are: Austin High School – Travis Yeh; Clements High School – Raymond Cano, Erin Dierker, Steven Flolid, Wenyang Fu, Gabriel Pham, Lilly Shen, Benjamin Tu, Haotian Wu and Sang Xie; Dulles High School – Nick Liu and Robert Shen; and Kempner High School – Robert Cyprus and Haley Escamilla. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the Nation’s highest honors for high school students. In honoring the Presidential Scholars, the President of the United States symbolically honors

all graduating high school seniors of high potential. Approximately 3,000 candidates for the Presidential Scholars program are selected each year for the academic component of the program, based on having scored exceptionally well on the College Board SAT or the ACT assessment. To confirm their interest and assist in the selection process, candidates must submit required application materials. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts.

Medications for Peptic Ulcers

Peptic ulcer disease is a condition of ulcers or sores that form in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. Some people with peptic ulcer disease may complain about pain in the upper part of the stomach, pain when they have an empty stomach, when they do not have an appetite, or may be experiencing nausea, vomiting, or bloating. Com plications of untreated peptic ulcers include bleeding and the eventual formation of a hole in the stomach wall. The most common cause is an infection caused by the bacteria Heliobacter pylori. Other risk factors for peptic ulcers include frequent use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, naproxen (Aleve), and ibuprofen (Motrin), smoking cigarettes, excessive drinking of alcohol and radiation treatments. Effective treatment involves a combination of medications to reduce stomach acid, kill bacteria, and help prevent the bacteria from coming back. Total treatment may take five to fifteen days of therapy, but scans may be necessary to determine the total duration of therapy. Antibiotics that are commonly used to kill H. pylori include clarithromycin (Biaxin), tetracycline, and metronidazole (Flagyl). Proton pump inhibitors (Prevacid, Nexium, or Prilosec) are taken to reduce stomach acid and allow the ulcer to heal.

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital honors outstanding nurse with DAISY Award Joy Fey, RN, is Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s DAISY Award winner, a national honor that recognizes the contributions of extraordinary nurses. Joy was chosen because she has demonstrated the highest degree of compassion for her patients. She has a reputation of exceeding her job duties and responsibilities to ensure the safety and well being of her patients. For example, one of Joy’s patients was very ill; Joy learned this patient’s daughter was getting married soon. Because the patient was too

ill to attend the wedding, Joy and some of the other nurses joined efforts to have a wedding held in the patient’s room. It was of the utmost importance to the daughter that her mom was present for her wedding. Joy made it her priority to make sure this family’s wishes were met, and the wedding was successfully carried out in the patient’s room. “This is just one example of the great nurse Joy truly is,” said Janet Leatherwood, Chief Nursing Officer of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “She is a shining light to anybody that

meets her. While her knowledge and nursing skills are very sharp, it is her heart that really shines and proves that her name, Joy, truly fits her personality.” In honor of her DAISY Award selection, Joy received a certification of appreciation, a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch,” handcarved by artists of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe. “We are proud to be among the hospitals participating in the DAISY Award program,” said Leatherwood. “Nurses like Joy are every day heroes

who demonstrate excellence through clinical expertise and compassionate care, and we are excited to be able to recognize her – and our future winners – as outstanding role models for the nursing profession.” To learn more about Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, please visit MethodistSugarLand. com or visit our Facebook page at FB.com/MethodistSugarLand to congratulate Joy on her award. The turnout was “phenomenal,” said one of the event organizers of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land Spaghetti Dinner held this past Friday at Fluor Daniel. The huge dining area was jam packed with people, excitement, and there was a long line, about 200 feet,   of those cued up to get the “best spaghetti outside of Italy,” cooked by local law enforcement agency reps.  Some of them also wore super hero costumes.  Noodles were maxed out! It was the first time the club has ever run out of spaghetti in 25 years.  This was the 26th annual event.  The food line stayed open for an hour longer as it was due to shut down at 8 p.m.   The 1,800 rolls were

served with each meal, then biscuits, and then no bread altogether, then the spaghetti pasta was switched to bow tie pasta, followed by egg noodles after a quick run to the store for more, some said that  it was for 50 more pounds.  For the dinner, about 150 pounds of spaghetti noodles were cooked, way above the 60 pound average of the previous years’ dinners, according to a club member. Numbers will soon roll out as reports are made during this week’s meeting of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land to determine the real winners of all of this effort-- the local charitable groups like Fort Bend Crime Stoppers , the Fort Bend Family YMCA, DePelchin Children's Center, Texana Center, Child Advocates of Fort Bend, and many other Fort Bend nonprofits.  It was a great turnout and area residents making the fundraiser successful are to be commended.  In previous years, the organization reports it has raised over $100,000 to help those in need.

Skeeters Hot Stove Banquet

At last week’s Skeeters Hot Stove Banquet held at Constellation Field’s Insperity Club, backers of the popular Sugar Land minor league team were treated to a panel consisting of Gary Gaetti, Larry Dierker, and Bob Watson.  The Hot Stove panelists shared memories after prompting by Sugar Land’s Brett Dolan, who served as MC and most recently as radio broadcaster for the Houston Astros Radio Network. Dolan, by the way, is married to Star reporter, Betsy Dolan.

Skeeters Manager Gaetti, a baseball standout with over 30 years experience in major and minor ball leagues Dierker, a community outreach executive for the Astros packing over 40 years baseball experience, and Watson, who achieved historic achievements backed by professional baseball experience, represented a well matched trio with casual exchanges about memorable career moments. Grover “Deacon” Jones, the special assistant to the Sugar Land Skeeters President, also spoke and
