Not surprisingly, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz came to the 2014 Lincoln-Reagan dinner at Safari Texas Ranch on January 10 with his tongue sharp and his message even sharper, blasting President Obama's "record of lawlessness" and warning the sell-out crowd that the American people need to rise up and take back their country. The conservative Republican laid out his reasoning for why he thinks American liberties are under attack, accusing Obama of "picking and choosing" which laws to follow. Cruz specifically mentioned the
executive orders Obama used to implement drug and gun control measures, steering immigration enforcement away from certain groups in the country illegally and the NSA surveillance scandal. "What the president is doing is unprecedented and it threatens the role of law", Cruz said. "No Democrats are standing up to call him on it. This is something that should bother people regardless of party". Cruz reserved his harshest attacks for the Affordable Care Act, calling it an "unmitigated disaster", stating that five million CRUZ, continued on page 5

The cities were hoping to find an alternative water source to building an expensive surface water treatment plant. According to City Engineer, Charles Kalkomey, the city did receive a detailed review of the hydro-geological and geotechnical data for the proposed well field that did suggest some subsidence in Fort Bend County could occur as a result of the project. Subsidence can lead to an increased threat of flooding. "Although this subsidence is significantly less than that predicted in the FBSD's (Fort Bend Subsidence District) earlier
The City of Rosenberg has scrapped its controversial plan to drill 10 commercial wells in Austin and Waller counties because new data showed an increased likelihood of subsidence, or land sinking. Rosenberg and Richmond had been part of Electro Purification LLC's well permit application with the Bluebonnet Groundwater Conversation District. Afterburner By LeaAnne Klentzman
The building of a scandal – The city of Rosenberg has promoted their long time police chief to city manager thus the search is on for a new police chief; one who will answer to the former police chief now city manager. According to insiders, since trying to become competitive with east Fort Bend county cities, Rosenberg has been cooking the crime stat books in their efforts to earn Safe City status. Lo and behold, Rosenberg was proclaimed a Safe City, right there along with Sugar Land and, Missouri City. Imagine the surprise when a chief cook and bottle washer, over at the Rosenberg Police Department, wrangles himself a seat as the City Manager, which in turn allows him to select the new police chief. Initially that new chief’s job had standard qualifications; they were posted on the city’s website. Before the day was up, another set of qualifications were posted resending the previous posting. According to those in the know, the new qualifications seemingly exclude all internal employees with the exception of a close personal friend of the former chief now city manager, well, all but he and the poor, beleaguered assistant chief who is currently acting chief. It might be noted that the qualifications for the new chief, are such that the former police chief now city manager does not qualify. Even so, applications poured in, well over 100 or more. Then as if my miracle, word began to spread that close personal crony of the former police chief now city manager was in the lead. Imagine that, a guy who has the reputation of a bully. The guy who said in an open staff meeting, “I am 99 percent that I will be the next Police Chief,” the guy who has character issues that have plagued west Fort Bend
County for years. It might behoove the city of Rosenberg to remember the job of police chief is that of public trust; is there no one available for that job that has not knocked up a subordinate? Are there no candidates that have degrees from accredited Universities? Interestingly, one of the added job qualifications is a physical fitness test. Really? Is the city not going to issue the new chief a car? Is the new chief going to have to run to meetings; drag crime scene evidence back to the police department on their back? Is the former police chief now city manager going to order the new chief to hit the floor and give him 20? Is this what is best for the city or is it what is best for the former police chief now city manager? Why would be he sculpting the job for this crony? It begs the question, what would motivate the former police chief now city manager to recommend such a person when there were so many qualified people to choose from? Is this cronyism or something far more nefarious? But wait, if this crony is not the selected, reports are the former police chief now city manager will make crony man part of the new chief’s leadership team. We shall see, with all the information flooding into the newspaper on this topic, the selection of the new Rosenberg Police Chief just might resemble the ever so popular television series…Scandal. Stay tuned. Your Legislature ordered it; the Texas Supremes are say’n it’s so In 2012 the Supreme Court of Texas issued a mandate that ordered e-filing (electronic filing) with County and District Clerks. In the Order they said, “Texas courts have struggled for over a century to process, manage and store court documents.” They further
Kathy Park Carter 832.704.0111
explained that by reducing the massive paper flow the Clerk’s clerks could spend their time more productively than stamping, sorting and filing paper. In the Order the Supremes said that new 1990’s technology (computers) was immediately beneficial when tested in Texas Courts. So, here we are 1/1/2014, and we find ourselves just a little past the 1990’s and hurdling across the threshold of full blown e-file with the courts. Now, just so ya' know, e-filing has been in place and in use for years; however, January 1, 2014 was the drop dead date and when the mandate made it so and the fur… it flew! Here in the Independent Nation of Fort Bend we don’t need no stink’n Supremes to tell us what to do, No Sir! And to make sure we honored our long standing traditions of arrogance; just days into this New Year, one of our soon to be retiring County Court at Law Judges was threatening to have the County Clerk arrested for not giving him papers. Now, you can imagine all the matter of papers she would love to have given him…but cooler heads prevailed and he was again foiled in his attempts to have her arrested; this isn’t his first try and you can bet won’t
be his last before he leaves office in 2 years he will try again, and again, and again… He’s just like that. Wags around the Courthouse will tell you that the Clerk told the Judge if he wanted the documents in paper… push the print button! Heard tell, he thought that was contempt. So, just how paperless will we go… In the study that was cited in the Order issued by the Supremes mandating e-file, they noted that fewer documents were lost or destroyed and even more importantly, the public, judges, lawyers, and clerks had easy immediate access to the government documents that are …remember…Public. Now, about that paperless thing, dare to dream, but the e-file will greatly reduce the mountains of paper that is piled into the courthouses and then forced into storage. Keep in mind, e-file is NOT ordered in all courts and the lawyers have been getting ready for this for years and they knew, even if they didn’t, the Supremes told them so. Based on the Order as of 1/1/2014, e-filing is mandatory in the Texas Supreme Court, courts of appeal, district courts, statutory county courts, constitutional
county courts, and statutory probate courts based on the county’s population in the 2010 census. Counties with a population of 500,000 or more were forced into mandatory implementation by this January 1. E-file will become compulsory for all counties
across Texas in descending population order by July of 2016. Welcome to TexFile. Send questions or inquiries to LeaAnne Klentzman firstname.lastname@example.org Fort Bend Star 4655 Techniplex Dr. Suite 300 Stafford Texas 77477

Management of Myelofibrosis
Myelofibrosis is a bone marrow condition that affects the normal growth and assembly of the body’s blood cells. Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside the hollow areas of some bones. The marrow is important because it helps produce new blood cells. In myelofibrosis, the bone marrow becomes scarred and not spongy, due to a genetic mutation that causes a very low amount of blood cells and too many white blood cells. As the condition gets worse, symptoms of low blood cells such as feeling tired easily, sluggish, easy bruising, night sweats, enlarged liver, enlarged spleen, and bone pain are often observed. The genetic mutation of a protein called JAK2 affects blood cells during myelofibrosis. A person’s physician will determine the best treatment plan based on the symptoms that a person has. Ruxolitinib (Jakafi) is the only FDAapproved medication available to help target the JAK2 gene mutation in myelofibrosis. Clinical studies have shown that this medication may re duce an enlarged spleen. To help treat severe anemia, a condition charac terized by low red blood cells, certain iron-containing medications may help increase iron production. Over-the-counter iron supplements con taining ferrous fumarate and ferrous sulfate may increase the number of red blood cells.

Floyds Cajun Seafood and Texas Steakhouse 16549 S. W. Freeway Sugar Land, TX Cuisine: Cajun Seafood and steak This restaurant is owned and operated by three partners who have three other restaurants by the same name. One partner is the son of Don Floyd #75 who played for the Houston Oilers. It was started with
the idea of showcasing their specialty of beloved boiled crawfish. Since then it has evolved and expanded to include other Cajun influenced seafood and Texas steaks. It has quite an extensive menu including an oyster bar, boiled crawfish, boiled crab, gumbos, bisques, red beans, fried, grilled, or blackened seafood, pastas, steaks and sauces, and of course desserts.

This is the second time I have eaten here. The first experience, a few months after it opened, was not good. After giving it a second chance, my opinion changed considerably. The bacon wrapped shrimp Diablo (stuffed with jalapeno cream cheese) was very good and well presented. The salad was no big deal. The blackened scallops were excellent, large, juicy and flavorful. It came with your choice of a side. I chose Dirty rice, which was a bit too mushy even as dirty rice goes and didn't stand out in any way. The fried shrimp were nice sized, crispy and flavorful. The pecan cobbler was a 4” square of deep-dish
pecan pie served a la mode and was sinfully delicious! Overall, the seafood was very good and satisfying, but a bit pricey for such a casual venue. The scallops were $18.99 for 6 large scallops and one side. Salad was extra. If you wanted to add a fancy sauce to your steak or fish it was an additional $7.00. The service was very friendly and attentive. I would definitely go back to this place, but be cautioned about over ordering or your tab could be steep. Overall Rating: 4 stars. If you have a favorite recipe you would like to share, please submit to denise@fortbendstar. com for consideration.
First in Fort Bend to use stem cells in orthopedic surgery Sugar Land orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mark Maffet of Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is the first orthopedic surgeon in Fort Bend County who is using stem cells to help accelerate healing and recovery after surgery. “Stem cells hold a great deal of promise in orthopedics,” says Dr. Maffet. “Right now, their use is cutting edge but I believe they will ultimately play a huge role in making surgical repair more successful.” Stem cells are found in bone marrow, blood and various types of tissue. Because they can differentiate into specialized cells and continuously divide, stem cells act as a “repair system” for the body and can replenish damaged tissue. Dr. Maffet used stem cells to surgically repair Amy Statler’s ACL tear. ACL tears are a common sports injury that often requires reconstruction of the knee. Amy is an active woman who enjoys playing softball and exercising and wanted to get back to her active lifestyle
quickly. “Dr. Maffet made me feel comfortable by explaining the process and answering all of my questions about the surgery. It was important for me to have a quick recovery. I am currently in physical therapy and am expected to be back on the softball field for our first practice in February. I am so happy with my recovery thus far and I feel better every day,” explains Amy. During ACL reconstruction surgery, orthopedic surgeons take a tendon from the knee or hamstring (either a patient's own or from a donor) and use it to replace the damaged ACL ligament. Dr. Maffet has begun using stem cells to help the body accept the new tendon and to speed the healing process. “The new ACL graft is soaked in a concentrate full of stem cells and other growth factors prior to fixation,” he explains. “In other cases, we can simply suture the torn ligament and inject the stem cell concentrate into the affected area.” Dr. Maffet is also using stem cells in rotator cuff repairs of the shoulder. By creating vascular channels down into the bone at the repair site, his
Shown in the photo are: Toko Nguyen, P.T., Amy Statler and Mark Maffet, M.D. goal is to trigger the stem cells located there and improve tendon healing. Other physicians throughout Houston Methodist, including Dr. David Lintner in the Medical Center, are also offering this procedure. “In time, I believe we will be able to show that the use of stem cells in orthopedic applications is making a difference in the lives of our patients,” he says. “The potential to repair and regenerate damaged tissue or bone, using the patient’s own
stem cells, will give us a fantastic new tool in treating sports injuries and other orthopedic issues. The ability to make our patients’ recoveries easier and more successful is exciting.” For more information about Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine located in Sugar Land, visit methodistorthopedics. com. Cruz calls Obama ‘lawless’ in speech at county 2014 Lincoln-Reagan dinner CRUZ, continued from page 1
Americans have lost their health insurance while others have lost their jobs or had their hours cut. At one point, Cruz mentioned President Obama's "if you like your plan, you can keep your plan" remarks which prompted several in the audience to shout out,"Liar! Liar!". "We now know those remarks were deliberately false", Cruz said. "Did President Obama go to Congress and say, 'Hey, I made a mistake on this. Let's change

the law'? No he didn't. Elected officials are especially subject to the law. If the president can pick and choose the laws he wants to follow they are no longer laws". Cruz also stated that income inequality has increased dramatically under President Obama, citing $1.7 million in new taxes, burdensome regulations and the federal health care overhaul as reasons the poor are suffering. "The president's solution is always debt and taxes. But the people who get hurt are the very
ones who are already struggling. If we repeal every single word of Obamacare, it will be the greatest thing we can do for economic growth in this country". Cruz took jabs at Al Gore and the recent polar vortex, Vice President Joe Biden and the partisan gridlock in Washington D.C. "I am so happy to be back in the great state of Texas. Pete (Olson), John Cornyn and I have spent the last week in Washington D.C. It is great to be
back in America", Cruz said. An autographed copy of "Green Eggs and Ham" which Cruz read aloud during his 21-hour filibuster against the Affordable Care Act, was auctioned off for $2,000.

devastating affect on the future of these communities,” Turner said. Rosenberg Mayor Vincent Morales said the city will continue to look for alternate water sources while continuing to be protective of natural resources and taxpayer dollars. But he expressed frustration at the "bureaucratic hurdles" imposed on the cities by the FBSD in the form of tightened regulations over what constitutes acceptable alternative water sources. Last month, the two cities sued the FBSD over the issue. "The issue at hand is not a
'you should have to because we did' situation. It is a matter of having the foresight to forge a unified vision for our collective future that allows Fort Bend County to maintain a measure of independence in terms of water supply", Morales said. Richmond and Rosenberg and other municipalities are under a mandate by the FBSD to reduce subsidence, which means finding alternatives to pumping groundwater in the district. All large water users in Texas must convert 30% of groundwater usage to an alternate source by 2016, and 60% to an alternate source by 2025.

The plan was controversial from the start and stoked concerns about subsidence and the quality and sustainability of the water supply in Austin and Waller counties. Missouri City's Texas Parkway widening project began January 13 The Texas Department of Transportation will manage the Texas Parkway widening project that will involve specified areas of Texas Parkway being expanded from two lanes to four, the installation of a concrete median and the construction of three sound walls to protect residential areas from traffic noise. Crews have begun the work and the contractor has
approximately one year to complete the improvements. Impacted areas are from Cartwright Road to Turtle Creek Drive. Department of Transportation officials have notified the city that motorists will be able to maintain regular travel patterns as one east- and one west-bound lane will be open for the duration of the project. Work will be performed in phases with lane
transitioning; and traffic barriers will be in place. A detour will not be in effect. Motorists may take alternate routes if they so choose. The city appreciates residents’ patience while the mobility improvements are made. For updates, please watch the City website: www.missouricitytx. gov and Missouri City Television (Ch. 16 on Comcast and Ch. 99 on AT&T U-verse.)

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS FOOT NOTES
There is a multitude of potential causes of foot pain such as issues with tendons, nerves, muscles, and blood vessels. The location of the pain helps pinpoint its cause. For example, when the band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes is inflamed or irritated, heel pain (plantar fasciitis) may be the diagnosis. An abnormal growth of bone at the base of the heel bone due to improper pronation may result in heel spurs, causing pain while standing or walking for any period of time. Should the ball of the foot be inflamed, metatarsalgia can result, requiring pain medication and, in some cases, orthotics. If you are having problems with foot pain, schedule an appointment with your podiatrist. When your feet cause you pain, the first step, and probably most important, is a visit to visit us at . When balance issues and other foot problems have got you down, let us do what we do best—diagnose and treat the problem so you’re back on your feet quickly and painlessly. Located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South, we are currently accepting new patients for complete podiatric care in a friendly, comfortable atmosphere. Please call us at 281-980-3668 for an appointment. Don't take your feet for granted - call us for an appointment. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment. HINT: Specific exercises may be recommended for particular foot pain issues.

Originally this road construction was supposed to start around the same time as the Dulles Avenue project, but the City of Stafford wisely made the decision to delay the Brand Lane project to provide alternate routes for citizens to maneuver through the traffic. The new construction will cost $4M and Stafford’s portion will be approximately $1M. Charles Russell said that the typical time frame from letting to ground-breaking is six weeks.

Kempner HS Marching Band invited to National Concert Band Festival The Kempner High School Marching Band announced it is the first Fort Bend ISD band to be invited to perform at the renowned National Concert Band Festival, along with only 15 other bands from across the United States, including three others from Texas. The 2014 Festival will be held March 6-8 in Indianapolis, IN. Organized by the internationally acclaimed Music for All (http://www.musicforall. org) organization, the festival provides a non-competitive atmosphere for growth, cooperative encouragement and mutual respect among music programs, students, parents, boosters and administrators. “Participating in the festival will provide an outstanding opportunity for students to meet and perform for the top music educators who direct the country’s premier nationally
recognized programs,” said Branden Hill, Director of Bands, Kempner High School. “This honor is the latest in an impressive list of achievements our band has worked hard for and attained over the last several years.” The KHS band plans four performances prior to its departure for Indianapolis in March. In addition, the Marching Cougars will perform at several universities during travel stops on the way to the National Concert Band Festival. By the end of the band’s trip, Hill estimates the students will have performed for over 20 thousand people. KHS plans to send 56 Honors Band students to the National Concert Band Festival. To help fund the trip the band booster club is seeking contributions and sponsorships from individuals, local
businesses and corporations. “We need to raise about $1,200 per student – $67 thousand -- for these students to attend the festival,” said Linda Corredor, KHS Band Booster Club President.
Donations may be made by check payable to KMCBC and mailed to KMCBC, PO Box 2601, Sugar Land, TX 77487-2601 or by visiting the booster club website kempnermarchingcougars.org
Kudos to the Kempner HS Marching Band who have been invited to perform at the National Concert Band Festival in March.
