According to accounts, former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert testified on DeLay's behalf. Local bank robbed with a twist

Pregnant woman says she was kidnapped as son held hostage As officers were beginning their initial investigation, dispatchers at the police department received a 911 call from a woman who told police she had been present during the robbery. “When police responded at Eastfield and Meadowview, she told an officer that she had been forced to commit the robbery,” said Missouri City Police Detective Russell Terry. When officers arrived on that scene, they were met by a woman

who said she was 8 months pregnant and had been at the robbery. She explained to authorities that she and her young son, 3 years old, were approached by a man in the parking lot of the Fiesta Mart in the 1500 block of Independence Boulevard. Terry said, “She told police the man forced them at gunpoint into her SUV and ordered them to drive to the bank.” The woman told police she complied. She drove to the Wells Fargo Bank and went inside and demanded money from the teller, as instructed, while the man held her young son hostage, at gunpoint, in the car. Once the woman returned to her car and handed over the cash, according to police, the gunman had the woman drive to Meadowview and Eastfield in Missouri City. The man ran from the car and the woman called police and reported the incident. The man is described as a 6-foot-tall black male wearing a stocking cap and a white and black shirt said authorities.

FBJSL presents checks from Sugar Plum Market Proceeds

Tom DeLay sentenced to three year prison term plus 10 years probation

By LeaAnne Klentzman Missouri City police are looking for a man who reportedly abducted a pregnant woman and held her son hostage in order to force her to rob a bank. Last Friday, shortly after noon, Missouri City police responded to a robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank in the 2400 block of Texas Parkway. Information given to responding officers was that the suspect appeared to be a pregnant woman, in a gray dress.

Former congressman to appeal: says didn’t break any laws

The former Sugar Land congressman faced up to life in prison. His lawyers asked for probation. Fifth time the charm? FBISD holds lengthy zoning workshop

Option updates for rezoning students presented by Chief Auxiliary Officer Ben Copeland were met with numerous questions from board members. So much so that the workshop that began a little after 6 p.m., originally scheduled to take an hour, went until close to 8:15 p.m., and cut into the start time of the regular board meeting set for 7 p.m. The mission was clear on the part of the board as Superintendent Dr. Timothy Jenney explained that a series of plans will be reviewed for final recommendation and are expected by February based on the progress made to date. Brain Glitch......I don’t know where my mind was last week when I said that Victor Morales would be running for mayor of Rosenberg. The candidate is VINCENT Morales. Someone around my office once commented that they didn’t know what we were going to do if I went crazy. Someone else said we probably wouldn’t notice it. Do you think they were implying that I already was? In any event, when current Mayor Joe Gurecky called me to tell me he would not be running, he reminded me of a something I said about him several years ago. According to Joe, we were all standing around at some event at the George Ranch and someone asked me why I never wrote anything bad about Joe. Quick as a wink, he said I claimed, “Because I don’t know how to spell his name.” I don’t remember the incident, but it does sound like something I would say. Over the years, I’ve learned to spell Joe’s name and over the years I still haven’t written anything critical about him. The main reason for that is that he has been an excellent mayor for Rosenberg, guiding it through some tough economic times when its sales taxes plummeted due to the relocation of a major retailer. He has steered the city through some huge expansions and will leave it poised for future growth. Except for one or two toe stumps along the way, Rosenberg, under Joe Gurecky, has prospered. Now if they can just get through the fight with Gary Gates over water rates. Oh, the headlines........ Dancing Behind the Bars Oh Tommy Boy, the Jail, the Jail is Calling - Hammer gets the Slammer - Hammer gets Nailed. Fort Bend’s former congressman Tom DeLay was

sentenced to prison time and probation with community service at his sentencing hearing Monday in Austin. I’ve read many news articles about it and for the life of me, I can’t figure out if all the prison time he got for two counts was rolled into the 10 years probations with community service or if he is still going to have to serve at least 3 years in prison plus 10 years probation. Since he says he is going to appeal the sentencing, I guess he was only able to get the five year sentence rolled into the probation and will still have to serve 3 years. I would think if he got it all reduced to probation, then he would just drop it and forego the expense of appealing. However, being convicted of a felony means he can’t vote or get a passport. So he might be appealing for that reason alone. I predict he will never serve a day in jail. From all the press accounts I’ve read, a couple of things have emerged that I didn’t previously know. First, Dennis Hastert, DeLay’s only witness, is a bigger idiot than I had imagined, judging from his answers to the prosecution and even the judge. Second, DeLay claimed he had spent $10 million on legal fees, a number I find surprising since there is not a quid pro quo available to his contributors after he resigned his house seat. But since DeLay turned the U. S. House into a branch of K Street and its lobbyists, perhaps he was collecting for past favors. Believe me, the companies are still collecting profits on the favorable laws Tom steered through the House. Another surprise, the DeLays, both of them, clutched bibles throughout the testimony. The reason I’m surprised is that is a common ploy of drug dealers and judges have seen it so much before. I’m sure that DeLay’s

attorney, Dick DeGuerin, warned him of that, so their bible-clutching must have really come from the heart. Hasert’s testimony about DeLay’s work with foster children failed to mention that a local foster home, Rio Bend, paid for by corporate contributions and a few individual sponsors during DeLay’s legislative heyday, consists of eight houses which have stood empty for over two years along with its swimming pool, gym, and chapel. This I have considered

a sin against God and have threatened to rail about it until I was told that another charitable organization would be taking over. Of course that has been since last summer and the homes still stand empty. I guess charity moves slowly. About that, I should cut the DeLays some slack since he and Christine did at least try to do something good with corporate contributions. I just don’t know when it went off track unless it was Christine’s insistence that it be run her way

This will be a workshop for anyone that would like to know more about the numerous ways that someone can volunteer and help Mothers Against Drunk Driving stop drunk driving, support the victims and their families of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking. The workshop will be an information session and orientation with a free lunch and other refreshments provided. Southeast Texas is still known as the “Drunk Driving Capitol of the World”. Through the mission of MADD a volunteer can help with Youth programs, monitor-

Full training will be provided in each of these areas as needed. This will be the next step in establishing a Ft. Bend County Mothers Against Drunk Driving group. Past victims, and their families, of a drunk driving crash are encouraged to contact MADD for connection and to get involved. even though she had no education or training in any of it. In any event, I’m sure that Tom DeLay is not evil, just arrogant and ignorant. He can clutch his bible until Armageddon, but karma will get you in the end. Tom DeLay led the charge to impeach Bill Clinton for having sex in the oval office and lying about it. The sex was

Preventive health - Keeping your family healthy saves money In tough economic times, families are setting budgets and tightening expenses. But there’s one area you shouldn’t trim: preventive health care. Even if your family is healthy now, skipping preventive health care can cost you in the long run. “Routine screenings and exams can help find health problems in the early stages when they are

often easier to treat,” says Mickey Bush, M.D., board certified in family medicine with Methodist Primary Care Associates. “This can save you money — not to mention help prevent serious health problems — in the long run.” Dr. Bush recommends the following preventive health steps: Check your numbers. High

cholesterol and blood pressure levels can lead to serious illnesses, including heart disease and stroke. With the help of a diet and exercise plan and/or medication, risk factors may be controlled. Schedule regular screenings. The best way to identify risk factors and find certain illnesses is through regular screenings. Stay up-to-date on shots. Both kids and adults should keep up with vaccinations. Immunizations have been shown to be effective in reducing certain diseases, including flu, pneumonia, hepatitis B, chickenpox and tetanus. Don’t smoke; Limit alcohol consumption; Exercise for 30 minutes on most days of the week; Wear sunscreen. To schedule a visit with Dr. Bush at Methodist Primary Care Associates, call 888-225-4912.

FOOT FACTS by Dr. Eric Tepper COLD FEET Many people experience cold feet, and for some, it can become a serious condition. Among a host of possible causes of this uncomfortable state are poor circulation, a side-effect of taking particular medications, stress, and smoking. These issues serve to constrict or slightly obstruct blood vessels in the feet and may cause the feet to change color. Wearing socks and staying indoors may not relieve the symptoms. If you are experiencing cold feet, avoid caffeine since it constricts blood vessels. If you smoke, quit. Avoid wearing tight-fitting footwear. Massage your feet to increase blood flow to the area. Should cold feet become an ongoing issue for you, be sure to see your podiatrist. People don’t always realize how their feet mirror their body’s general health. They sometimes try to believe their foot problems “will just disappear.” We strongly recommend having foot problems attended to in order to prevent them from becoming serious, as well as to keep an eye on the rest of the body. We may not be able to prevent all the conditions that affect your body, but we can help deal with some of the problems that may accompany them. Make your next step a comfortable one—call for an appointment at 281-980-3668, 3143 Hwy. 6 South. HINT: Cold sensations to the feet can indicate a low thyroid condition.

AUTO TALK with David & Cindy Fauvelle

GET A CHARGE OUT OF DRIVING!

When replacing a vehicle’s battery, make sure it is the correct size and has its terminals mounted in the proper position (top or side). So-called “absorbed glass mat” (AGM) batteries, which are sealed and maintenancefree, may be a good choice for offroad vehicles and automobiles with remotely located batteries. Instead of a conventional liquid-filled chamber, AGM batteries soak up electrolyte with an absorbent lining, which manufacturers claim make them safer, spillproof, and vibration-resistant. Another factor to take into consideration is the climate to which the battery will be subjected. Freezing temperatures reduce battery energy while hot temps corrode plates and vaporize electrolyte faster. In addition, generally speaking, the freshest battery (no more than six months old) is the best choice. Your vehicle’s reservoir of electricity is the storage battery. It starts the engine and must work under all kinds of temperature conditions. Please call AUTO CENTRAL at 281-499-9684 to schedule a maintenance check of your vehicle that includes testing of the battery and inspection of the battery cables, hold-down clamps, and tray. We are located at 2526 5th St., Stafford. Do you have a car care question? Visit our discussion board on Facebook-Auto Central. Autocentralautomotive.com. HINT: Many automobile batteries designate their shipping date with a letter (A-L) for the month and a number for the year (10 for 2010), printed on the case. By: David and Cindy Fauvelle, Owners

A total of 40 cadets from Bush competed in the meet, bringing home several top awards. The state meet challenged cadets in various areas of competition, including armed and unarmed drill that included basic and exhibition routines, color guard performance, phys-

ical fitness (pushups, sit-ups, and an 800-meter relay race), and a written exam covering the entire four-year naval science curriculum. Bush cadets earned the following awards: • Unarmed Drill Team, commanded by Cadet Commander Tina Tong – 1st place overall; 1st place, regulation drill; and 2nd place, inspection and exhibition drill • Physical Fitness Team, commanded by Cadet Lieutenant Commander Aaron

Mendoza – 1st place overall • Female Color Guard, commanded by Cadet Lieutenant Mindy Obregon – 2nd place overall • Cadets Aaron Mendoza and Aaron Woods – 1st place tie, sit ups • Cadet Daniel Mendoza – 2nd place overall, pushups • Cadet Aaron Mendoza – 3rd place overall, pushups The Bush NJROTC Drill Team will compete at the Navy JROTC State Drill Meet at Texas A&M University in

February, where the top two teams will advance to the Navy Nationals Drill Meet to be held at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola Florida. The Bronco NJROTC Drill Team has advanced to the Navy Nationals for the past five years, competing against the top 24 NJROTC drill teams in the nation. When asked what she thought the chances were of the Broncos returning to the Navy Nationals for the 6th year, Cadet Commander Tina Tong responded “We are absolutely

sure that we are going back to Pensacola this year. Our goal as seniors is to instill the expectation of success into our junior

cadets, and I have no doubt that because of their dedication and commitment, we will return to the Navy Nationals this year.”

First Colony Women win Junior Nationals Nine Senior swimmers represented FCST at the 2010 Speedo Short Course Junior Nationals meet in Atlanta, Georgia on December 9th-11th. Sugar Land prepares for freezing winter weather The City Sugar Land is working to protect city infrastructure and ensure citizens are prepared for several days of freezing temperatures. “Experience has shown us that water pipes in older homes in Sugar Land are not typically insulated sufficiently to withstand an extended hard freeze” said Director of Utilities SuEllen Staggs. “Pipes located near the external walls of the home are the most susceptible to freezing and bursting. “We recommend you locate the main shut off valve for your home. If you experience a leak, immediately closing the shutoff valve will minimize damage caused by the leak. Running

water or allowing water to drip from your faucets is not recommended as it can decrease water system pressure.” Staggs reminds residents that sprinkler systems also need to be protected. “During a hard freeze in recent years, numerous sprinkler system backflow preventers broke because they were not properly prepared.” Residents should take precautions to turn off and drain sprinkler systems: • Turn off the water to the irrigation system at main valve. • Set the automatic irrigation controller to the “rain” setting. • Turn on each of the valves to release pressure in the pipes. • Drain all of the water out of

any irrigation components that might freeze. Call a landscape professional or the person who installed the sprinkler system if unsure how to drain a sprinkler system. Residents are encouraged to prepare their homes to avoid damage to water pipes, sprinkler systems and swimming pools. To prevent pipes from freezing, the city recommends: • wrapping or covering outside faucets, pipes exposed to outside temperatures and disconnecting water hoses; • keeping cabinet doors below kitchen and bathroom sinks open to allow warm air from the house to circulate around pipes located under the sinks;

• keeping house temperature above 68 degrees; and • turning off the main water valve and draining water from household pipes if house will be unoccupied for the duration of the forecasted freeze. (Main house shut off valve locations vary, but most are located either on the outside of the house near the driveway, kitchen, garage, or laundry room, or inside the house in the laundry room, kitchen, or a bathroom.) If a pipe bursts, shut off water at the main valve, and call a plumber. If the main valve can’t be located, call the Sugar Land Utilities Department at (281) 275-2450 to have the water turned off at the meter.

THE STAR HHH

Family asks for help from the public The Cockrell family in Quail Valley started out the year unpleasantly surprised when they learned that its Santa from their Christmas display was taken from the front yard about a week after Christmas. We’re told that Santa is almost 20 years old and over six feet tall, and holds a personalized list with each of the family members names and those of their pets. Part of their outdoor display was taken down by the family on Sunday, Jan. 2 and the figures were left one more night and were planned for removal the following day. These fig-

ures are put up yearly by the family and have become a sort of tradition with them. With the Santa grabbed up from their front yard, they are so disappointed and feel their display won’t be the same without the Santa since the kids grew up with it as did the neighbors and their children, who all enjoyed seeing it yearly. The family is asking for help in recovering its prized Christmas possession and

Mo City Council Connection held, several actions taken during meeting During its regularly scheduled meeting held on Monday, Jan. 3, City Council approved a contract for high-speed internet services, authorized a loan to TIRZ 1 to fund drainage work at Texas Parkway and Cartwright Road, and amended the municipal trash contract to include service for some homes outside of the City limits. Here are some actions City Council took during the meeting: • Approved an addition to the solid waste contract to extend collection service to homes in Sections 1, 2 and 3 of Newpoint Estates that are not currently within the City limits.  Section 4 is within City limits, and the addition will allow unified pickup within the subdivision.  The decision was made at the

request of homeowners. • Approved a resolution authorizing funding through an economic development agreement between the City, TIRZ 1 and the Missouri City Development Authority for a $217,706 loan for construction of enclosed drainage on 3 of the 4 corners at Texas Parkway and Cartwright Road. The work is an extension of the ongoing Texas Parkway sidewalks project. The loan will be repaid from TIRZ 1 as revenue is received. • Approved a contract for grounds maintenance services for mowing and maintaining 298 acres of parkland in the City to Bio Landscape and Maintenance, Inc. for $251,453. The contract is for one year with options to renew for up to two additional years. Nine proposals were received for the contract and the City chose to work with Bio, the current provider, based on the company’s strong service record, pricing plan and its location within City limits. Bio has worked with Missouri City since 2008 and handled the original mowing of the Quail Valley golf courses when the City acquired the property. • Approved the consent agenda, including the following items: • Awarded an $83,820 contract to Comcast Business Communications for highspeed internet services. The agreement covers 36 months of service. • Authorized the purchase of tires for City vehicles on an asneed basis through the State of Texas cooperative purchasing system. The $50,000 contract will be issued by the State of Texas Comptroller’s Office to Michelin North America, Inc. • Approved deviations from a zoning ordinance for a Popeye’s Restaurant, allowing the exterior red color for the establishment, and allowing the business to have company colors on its signs. The site is located on State Highway 6, southeast of its intersection with Vicksburg Boulevard.  This is the first of two readings on the amendment.

Mural artist and Missouri City firefighter Matt Rios practices for a 50-mile run in February to raise money for the Lone Survivor Foundation. awareness to the foundation in Fort Bend and he’s going on a 50-mile run in February in Huntsville State Park. “I am having family, friends, and other great Americans sponsor me for the run and 100% of the money I raise will be given to the foundation,” he said. Leonetti’s Graphics has already sponsored him by providing shirts with the foundations logo, what Rios will wear in the run. Rios says of

his intentions, “I will write the check out the day before the run and upon crossing the finish line I will hand it over to the President of the Foundation,” a symbolic handing over a baton for the next stretch…in this case, the next stretch of life for the returning veterans of war. Rainbow Trout family fishing event is Jan. 15 Brazos Bend State Park will host a Rainbow Trout Family Fishing Event on January 15, from 7am to 5 pm. Over 2,000 catchable Rainbow Trout will be stocked into New Horseshoe Lake as part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) annual trout stocking program. Catching these hungry fish at Brazos Bend State Park can be easy, making the experience ideal for both novice anglers and kids. The fish will bite almost immediately after stocking and typically will take a variety of baits, from whole kernel canned corn or commercial soft bait to artificial flies and even small spinner baits. If you don’t have fishing gear, a limited number of rod and reel setups will be available free of

charge for use during the event. It’s also a good idea to carry along a pair of needle-nosed pliers to help remove hooks, and a five gallon bucket, small ice chest or a fish stringer to keep your catch. Be sure to keep freshly caught trout cold on ice or refrigerated. Park Rangers will be available each day during the event to assist fisherman and to answer questions. Park visitors do not need a fishing license while they’re fishing within the boundaries of a state park. Anglers are required to pay the park’s entrance fee for the Rainbow Trout Fishing Event and follow all applicable fishing regulations. Rainbow trout anglers can keep five trout per day. There is no minimum length limit.

Mrs. Deborah Kerr and Mr. Conrad Kerr are pleased to announce the engagement of their son, Robert Wommack, III to Miss Micaela Ornelas, daughter of Mrs. Eva Ornelas and Mr. Larry Ornelas of Austin, Texas. Therapy for Acute Renal Failure

Acute renal failure (ARF) develops within several hours to several days. The kidneys normally function to remove waste and excess fluids from the blood. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, excess waste products such as urea and creatinine can buildup in the body. An elevation in serum creatinine can be an indication of ARF. Other signs and symptoms of ARF include decreased urine output, swollen legs, and fatigue. The condition can occur as a result of an infection, a heart condition, or severe dehydration. Elderly persons and persons in the hospital are at an increased risk of kidney failure. Certain medications, in high doses, also may cause damage to the kidneys, including the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and aspirin. If kidney damage is caused by an infection, an antibiotic may be prescribed to treat the infection and minimize further damage. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Kayexalate) is a medication that may be used for persons with a high amount of potassium in the blood as a result of ARF. If the kidney failure is causing too much fluid retention in the body and swelling, a diuretic medication, such as furosemide (Lasix) or bumetanide (Bumex) may be recommended. Dialysis may be required to filter the blood while the kidneys recover.

FBISD holds lenthy zoning workshop....... from page 1 Wrongful death suit filed “We would like to look at School showed student capacity tors. This Sunday, a sizable rally on behalf of Marine. ................................. from page 1 and reconsider the possibility of at 1,196 and current enrollment about this east end of the district repurposing that with more information,” she said. Highlights of the elementary school update include the Colony Bend elementary school closure options for closing it and rezoning all K-5 students, 360 of them, to Colony Meadows and Highlands amounting to a $1,159,000 savings, establishing a GT Academy at Colony Bend for grades 3-5 at a cost of $530,185 and rezoning students into Colony Bend for Cornerstone and Settlers Way. There was also a rezoning option for Telfair to accommodate students in the under enrolled schools within First Colony, i.e. Colony Bend and Colony Meadows. Of concern is the future use of a closed Colony Bend school, given that scenario. Not having a plan for what to do with the school under that option raised board members concern. For the middle schools, a feedback report for Baines Middle

of 1,504 projected to continue to increase requiring zone transfers or a new future school, MS #15 at a cost of $2,095,000, vis a vis adding T-buildings to make the accommodations. Addressing issues of past workshops about the possibility of closing either Marshall or Willowridge High School, an update showed annual cost operations of the two schools, noticeably higher in utilities for Willowridge, partly explained to be due to school size. The two high school options stirred up controversy among board members polarizing opinions at turning McAuliffe Middle School into a technical school to accompany the closure of either Willowridge or Marshall High School and the other position, not doing anything at all until further information can be obtained about technical school interest, enrollment projections and other success fac-

closures was held and reportedly referred to by an attendee for what she said it really is … the minority side of the district. There’s more to come. A Willowridge/Marshall High School community march is being organized for Jan. 22 sponsored by the Fort Bend Pastor’s Association. Close schools, but add buildings to make accommodations for growth needs requiring capital expenditures seemed to be an expressed theme counterproductive to what the district wants to accomplish. The fact that schools throughout the district show over and under utilization numbers remains the challenge facing the school district. The board continues to review options to cut back and better use existing facilities and tax dollars, especially in light of budget slashes about to come from the state legislature which may impact public school financing.

David Stidman was a 23 year old B.F. Terry High School graduate; class of 2005. He participated in ROTC at Terry and joined the Marines shortly after graduation. He served multiple tours in war zones, and earned the rank of Corporal. David Stidman had returned home, on terminal military leave, to help his father who had been seriously injured in a motorcycle accident only

months before. According to his father, Dwayne Stidman, in the short time David had been home, he had made changes to their business operation so he (Dwayne) could get around while he was recovering,. Dwayne said David was scheduled to study Engineering in college. Dwayne Stidman is shattered by the loss of his son and the loss of their future. Rob

Ammons, the Houston who has filed the Wrongful Death suit on behalf of David for his father, has publicly vowed to leave no stone unturned. With the local connections in this case it will be an interesting one to follow. Sean McGuire faces both criminal and civil cases in the 240th District Court, Honorable Judge Thomas R Culver III presiding.

Wanted Stafford man arrested in Brownsville. .......................................... from page 1 The Marins returned later that night walking into the bar shooting, forever changing the course of many lives. To date, the three Marin brothers turned themselves in at the county jail to face capi-

tal murder and charges. Their cousin, Francisco Marin was captured by Valley authorities and Federal Marshall's officers last week. All are in custody and facing charges for the December

shooting deaths of Francisco Pena, 27, and Oscar Mejorado, 28, as well as the aggravated assaults on other patrons at the bar that night. Bond for all the family is set at $200,000 each.
