Attempt will be made to bring pay in line with other districts

Fort Bend ISD will tweak teachers’ salary structure By Betsy Dolan

If you are an experienced teacher in Fort Bend ISD, chances are you are making slightly more money than your peers in other districts around the Houston area. But if you are a first year teacher in Fort Bend ISD, you might be making less. Such are the findings of a Texas Association of School Board study presented to the Fort

Bend ISD Board of Trustees. The board has approved adjusting the district's pay structure to bring it more in line with neighboring districts. Amy Campbell from TASB told the Trustees that experienced teachers in Fort Bend ISD are making 1-3% above average. But starting teacher salaries in the district are 2% below the median. "Two years ago when pay was frozen, the starting salary

was lowered and that may have impacted how you related to market", Campbell said. "Right now you're about $1,000 off the median." The Board has approved a 2% increase for all staff and increased the starting teacher salary to $46,750 for the 20132014 school year. Dr. Tracy Hoke, Fort Bend ISD's Chief FBISD, continued on page 10

City of Stafford meets wtih SMSD about district’s budget increases

Sugar Land Town Square recently hosted its 3rd Annual Sugar Land Junior Superstar competition to spotlight local youth talent in Fort Bend County. Fifteen contestants competed in the American Idol-like competition, and the judges named nine-year-old Gabriela Sanchez the 2013 Sugar Land Junior Superstar. Her first year in the competition, Sanchez impressed the audience and judges with her rendition of Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On.” Pictured (L-R): third place winner Cashmir Khawaja, 2013 Junior Superstar Gabriela Sanchez, Emcee Michele Fisher and second place winner Jacqueline Botz. Sugar Land's irrigation schedule voluntary? By Elsa Maxey

The City of Sugar Land has put out a voluntary schedule for irrigation in an attempt to keep up with the demand for water as it asks water customers to use water more efficiently. But, here’s the part that is irking at least one city dweller. Residents are being asked to water on two specific days of the week in keeping with the color coded,

four irrigation city zones. If this is voluntary, watering two days a week, then why is the city specifying the days? “Residents recently received a brochure in the mail with a magnet illustrating the city’s Irrigation Zone Schedule,” said city spokesperson Doug Adolph, referring to it as a good reminder for when to water. He also said that following the twice-a-week irrigation schedule benefits

Same song, second verse when you are in law enforcement By LeaAnne Klentzman

Each week as the "Star" puts together yet another spine tingling issue to provide readers with what is happening in their community, local law enforcement is quizzed on daily activity. One thing is for sure, whether reported or not, there is always crime. Here is just a microcosm of what law enforcement deal with on an hourly and shift basis. While the street names change and the faces of the complaints

are different, it remains the same, crime is constant and good, as well as, bad. One week in the month of May, in one area, sheriff’s deputies responded to a home on Honeymoon Bridge in the Woodbridge neighborhood three times for domestic violence problems. Some of those issues were for assault, and others were for violations of protective order. The deputies were tasked with keeping the peace, providing SAME SONG, continued on page 10

While it’s understandable that the planning efforts are about cutting back on the “more than 40 percent of the City’s total water consumption” which has been used for landscaping, the question again begs… why the designated days? “The program ensures that water usage is evenly spread throughout the week,” and it also promotes responsible water use during the dry summer months, Adolph told the "Star". Dear Beverly,

I must apologize for taking this long to write to you.  I have been an avid reader of your column since I moved back into this area in 2008. I especially admire the way you dealt with the sheriff's mess before a new election was held. There is power with the pen after all.  I am a proud Democrat.  I wonder if we

will ever change the mentality of those in Sugar Land who supported Tom Delay. Oh well, I guess that what elections are for. I hope that you will still continue with your column despite your illness.  I look forward to your column every week. Take care, Renee Schooler

Reader says...Thank you, Ms. Carter Dear Beverly, I have enjoyed, and most often relished, your news/ opinion columns.  I have read in recent months, and certainly in your last column, a certain resignation from you. I pray for your re-birth of health and energy.  You have provided me with stimulations of both my funny bone and my viscera.  You have been a blessing to me amidst Sugar Land's cultural quagmire of self-satisfaction.

No matter whether you ever write another word in the newspaper (for which scribing, I fervently pray), I just wanted you to know that your insights and truth-tellings have been VERY important to me.   And I wish you many, many more years of enjoyment of your son & grandkids One of highest blessings. God bless you, and I sincerely thank you. Pam Moye

Code Enforcement Officers to conduct sweeps In Fondren Park As part of Missouri City’s goal to protect property values and help keep our community one of America’s best, Code sweeps will continue this year throughout all neighborhoods. From June 1 to June 30, Code Enforcement inspectors will regularly visit Fondren Park to observe if any infractions exist. Citations and warnings will be issued. Homeowners will be cited directly to court for violating the following codes: • High grass or weeds • Junk cars or vehicles, including those with expired license plates or inspection stickers •  Dirty pools • Parking on the grass For a second violation, the following will be cited directly to court: Trash cans, yard waste or any type of garbage left out in public view, except during allowed times. Notice will be provided to the subdivision’s homeowner association in advance of the sweeps. To report a code violation, call the Code Enforcement Hotline at 281-403-8560. I’ve only recently got a computer that works with spoken text. In other words I can talk into a microphone and it (mostly) types what I’ve said. I’m not used to  writing this way,

Travis High School’s OneAct Play wins First Place The cast and crew of Travis High School’s one-act play were awarded the state championship after performing at the UIL OneAct Play competition on May 22 at Bass Concert Hall in Austin.  Under the direction of Tommy Grubbs and assistant Tiffanie Thomas, Travis High School (THS) performed “Unexpected Tenderness” by Israel Horovitz. THS advanced to the state level after competing at the Zone, District, Area and Regional levels.  “Unexpected Tenderness” is a biographical memory play about a son who discusses his decision to end the cycle of abuse and centers around a dysfunctional Jewish family and its abusive, yet remorseful father whose demons ultimately drive his family away. THS competed against seven other 5A high school theatre groups for the state title.  Cast members and individual awards include Jon Rivenburg (Best Actor and Samuel French Award), Shea Peterson (All-Star Cast), Carissa Cardy (Honorable Mention All-Star Cast), Andrea Rodriguez (Honorable Mention All-Star Cast), Duane GarciaFacey, Taylor Winks, and Ryan Siller.  Crew members include Jose Sabillon, Claire

Brady, Jules Iradukunda, Kyrah Schoenberger and Andrea Martinez. Reagan Moore, Tiffany Abreu, Rachel McCall, and Micheal Raby are alternates. Several Travis students have contributed to the success of the show, including  Marjorie Cade, Tejal Thakor, Miles Agee, Sydney Moore, Katlyn Gupton, Manny Soto, Jonathan Blair, Quinn Kobrin, Brandon Willis, Marisa Emiliani, Trey Tobias, Ronel Edipokeya, Chris Uhlig , Ashley Blakeman, Courtney Crews  and many others.  The show includes many special and original props made by the technical staff led by Brady and McCall. The lights were designed by Kyrah Schoenberger. Jules Iradukunda worked on selecting vintage costumes and repairing them for stage use, and Andrea Martinez designed the sound. The awardwinning technicians are led by outstanding stage manager, Jose Sabillon. THS Principal J.J. Kyle has also been a major contributor to the show’s success. Prescription and OTC Drugs for Obesity

Obesity is a common, chronic condition that describes a person with excess body fat. Unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, genetics, and certain diseases can all contribute to an individual’s weight. If not controlled, obesity can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and arthritis. A person is determined to be obese based on their body mass index (BMI), which is calculated using weight and height. A healthy BMI is 18.5-24.9, while an individual is considered overweight at 25-29.0 and obese if their BMI is over 30. Prescription medications are used to aid weight loss when a person’s BMI is over 30 or if it’s over 27 and they have one or more health problems associated with obesity. Phentermine (Adipex-P, Phentercot, Suprenza) and diethyl-propion are prescription medicines that suppress the appetite. Phentermine is also available in a combination tablet with topiramate (Qsymia), a medication used for seizures that has been shown to cause weight loss. Another medication, orlistat (Xenical), reduces the body’s absorption of fat from foods and also must be prescribed by a physician; however a lower strength formulation is available overthe¬counter (Alli). Lorcaserin (Belviq) is a prescription drug that makes a person feel full.

FOOT FACTS by Dr. Eric Tepper BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS THE DOMINO EFFECT

When you walk or run, your body responds to the impact by demonstrating a particular “pronation.” Upon impact, the arch of the foot flattens and elongates, causing the inward rolling of the foot. The amount of flatness of the arch determines how much the foot pronates. The optimal response may be referred to as “neutral,” a minor inward movement of the ankle bone when ground contact is made by the foot. Deviation from that ideal position can cause foot injuries and other issues including shin splints and knee pain. Foot therapy that includes stretching exercises and the use of supportive orthotics can help correct improper pronation and address the discomfort associated with it. What is your pronation? Whenever your feet hurt, it’s important to find out why. Following diagnosis, it’s time to formulate a treatment plan that may consist of medication, orthotics, surgery, exercise, or even a change in footwear. If your feet hurt, it’s smart to communicate with your doctor. Now is a good time to schedule an appointment for footcare for the family at 3143 Hwy. 6 South, where we practice conservative podiatry as the frontline defense against feet that cause you to suffer pain. PH: 281-9803668. Don't take your feet for granted - call us for an appointment. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment. HINT: Some methods of taping the foot may prevent overpronation.

Eventually a fight ensued and according to Haenel, “The unwelcome worker stabbed the other with a cordless drill, causing pain and a minor injury.” At about 9 p.m. that night, deputies were dispatched to the 7200 block of San Pablo in Mission Bend to investigate a domestic violence assault. In this case, Haenel said, “A woman was at her father-in-law’s house to wash some clothes. A female resident of the house objected and the two got into a fight.” As the night wound down to a close, in another, yet different

In this case the victim told deputies that when she arrived that evening to a friend’s baby shower, she witnessed two women getting into a fight. During the melee, one of the assailants husband waded into the fight. The victim suffered injuries while trying to intervene and stop the brawl. The cases identified here are just a few of the calls for service that deputies responded to in just one shift in just one area of Fort Bend County. While the names might change, and the faces are different, the calls for service and crimes remain the same.

save the us (the city) money?” In his message with the voluntary schedule, Mayor James Thompson lauds the city’s efforts to provide fresh clean water to residents and mentions the recent 2 million gallon water tower constructed along U.S. 59 near the Brazos River for the growing city. Mayor Thompson states that the irrigation schedule will help prevent water restrictions during drought conditions. “But we really have restrictions now albeit under the guise of ‘voluntary’ participation, because one look at that magnet with my zone and days to water does not show the word ‘voluntary’ on the magnet itself,” said the concerned resident. “What I also don’t like is that I might end up being policed by well intentioned neighbors,” said the water customer about the specific irrigation days schedule

for his neighborhood. “There are no plans to adopt a fixed schedule,” said Adolph noting that the city adopted a revised Drought Contingency Plan last year that includes lessons learned from the 2011 drought. So, is it okay to water on another weekly set of two days? Probably so. “Voluntarily complying with the neighborhood irrigation schedule year-round contributes to the City’s water conservation goal to reduce outdoor water use,” said Adolph. He notes that reducing current water use can prolong or possibly eliminate the need for future water system infrastructure expansions with an accompanying financial burden. Commercial customers and roadways are also subject to the specific irrigation schedules limited to two days per week.

In February, the city opened a 1.8 mile stretch of University from Commonwealth Boulevard to the Riverstone Development to help alleviate congestion on SH 6. The $5.4 million project on University North was identified in the City's Master Thoroughfare Plan. Funding is coming from an 80/20 agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation and federal grant money, city funds and through the 2007 Fort Bend County Mobility bond program. When the city started the design phase back in 2009, the hope was to have the project finished by 2011. "Unfortunately, while we were in the middle of the process the regulations changed and they wanted us to do a noise impact study and that pushed the project back two years to get environmental approval."said Shashi Kumar, Sugar Land's Senior Engineer. Texas Sterling Construction was awarded the construction contract. The City also hired PTP Transportation for $245,124 to help navigate the contract administration and construction management to make sure the city adheres to the strict federal regulations in order to get reimbursed for the project. After the project passed unanimously, Mayor James Thompson turned to newly elected councilman, Steve Porter and said,"We've been working on this for 2 1/2 years and you were able to get it done on your first night!"
