the charity for your community costs. Restrictions on the way payday loan companies operate are likely to be introduced by a Government watchdog next year. Until then, if you are considering a payday loan, check carefully that the lender has:

Don’t Let Payday Loans Spoil Your Christmas At this time of year it’s easy to be tempted by advertisements for easy loans. It is rarely sensible to borrow to meet the cost of the festive season, but Citizens Advice warns in particular against “payday lenders.” Payday loans are short term loans intended to tide you over until you get paid – and, properly controlled, they can have their uses. The trouble is that some payday lenders ignore the rules. A survey by Citizens Advice has revealed that some payday loan companies are taking money from bank accounts without warning, often causing the borrower even bigger financial problems. They use “continuous payment authorities” or CPAs – which allow a creditor to collect repayments directly from the borrower’s bank account. In some cases they take money too early, take a larger amount than agreed or even after the debt has been paid off.

Restrictions on the way payday loan companies operate are likely to be introduced by a Government watchdog next year Locally Citizens Advice has been helping many people whose bank accounts have been completely drained, leaving them with no option but to borrow more to cover basic living

Explained the total cost of repaying each £100 you borrowed, including fees and charges

Told you exactly how and when to pay back your loan

Checked that you were able to pay back the loan

Told you what to do if you have a complaint

Set out clearly how a CPA works and your right to cancel it

Citizens Advice explains all about payday loans on the debt section of its website www. citizensadviceguide.org.uk – including how to complain against a payday lender. If you are in financial difficulty and considering a payday loan your local Citizens Advice Bureau can help you sort out your finances.

‘Oh, No, He Isn’t!’ For so many of us, young or old, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a visit to the pantomime. This uniquely British form of seasonal entertainment has been a festive fixture for generations and part of the fun is enjoying the rituals and traditions that form an essential part of panto – but have you ever wondered how this unusual art form came to be? The roots of modern day pantomime go back to Italy in the 1500s when troupes of actors toured through the towns performing anarchic and ribald street theatre. This form of theatre, known as Commedia Dell’arte, featured stock characters with masks which audiences came to recognise and love and performances were bawdy, comedic affairs. Over time these troupes began travelling throughout other parts of Europe including England.

“The comedic aspect of cross dressing was exploited to the full during Victorian times with the evolution of the pantomime Dame.” In the 1700s theatre going was increasingly popular in England and elements of what we now know as pantomime were developing on the stages of London. Earlier theatre generally had all male casts who played all the characters whether male or female, but the comedic aspect of cross dressing was exploited to the full during Victorian times with the evolution of the pantomime Dame. Often a widow and usually living in poverty, the Dame would not only generate most of the laughs from the audience but she would also evoke a degree of sympathy too.

As theatre began to reflect more working class settings and Music Hall developed, pantomimes reflected this with a healthy dose of risqué humour, something which is still very apparent today. Alongside this sits a great deal of slapstick comedy too – thus providing something to appeal to all sections of the audience, young and old. Although, of course, for adults the pleasure of pantomime is not only the appreciation of the more ‘sophisticated’ humour of the double entendre but also the chance to indulge in ‘childish’ delight at the visual comedy which panto provides. Over the years other keys aspects of pantomime became established such as the audience shouting ‘Oh, no, he isn’t!’ and ‘He’s behind you!’, the inclusion of two people dressing up to represent a single animal such as a horse or a cow, the two halves of the audience being encouraged to participate in a singing competition, some younger members of the audience being invited onto the stage and lots of booing and hissing at the villain. Pantomime is the ultimate feel good experience – a chance for all the family to witness a topsy turvy world full of sparkle and laughter where good always triumphs over evil – what more could you ask for at Christmas?!

Getting Your character, Nick Cotton, appeared in the very first episode of EastEnders, back in 1985. What was it like being part of the launch of such a ground breaking show?

Born in Reading, actor John Altman, played his first film role in 1979 in The First Great Train Robbery. John became a household name in 1985 after appearing as ‘Nasty Nick’ Cotton in EastEnders, the baddie the nation loved to hate. The Forget-Me-Not caught up with John recently to find out more about his life as an actor... When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I think I fancied being a journalist at one stage, I won the school English prize – a dictionary, which I still have. But I was also interested in acting. We didn’t have a TV when I was a boy but I loved going to the cinema – after seeing a film I’d walk out of the cinema pretending I was Paul Newman or Clint Eastwood. I couldn’t afford to go to drama school but I was in school plays and I later joined an amateur dramatics group. I ended up as assistant stage manager at the Grand Theatre in Leeds and, over time, I got a few walk on parts in productions and my acting career grew from there.

It was really exciting, but we really didn’t know what response we would get - EastEnders was different; fast paced and gritty. Other soaps had come and gone and we couldn’t predict what would happen but after about a month or so the ratings were good and everyone was talking about the show, so we knew it wasn’t going to be a short lived thing.

“After seeing a film I’d walk out of the cinema pretending I was Paul Newman or Clint Eastwood” Your career has also included many other television appearances as well as successful theatre and film roles – which do you prefer? Film is my greatest love – that goes back to all the movies I watched as I was growing up.

John Altman

Any embarrassing moments?

helping to create some magic at Christmas.

I was once in a production where I had to do a chair walk, where you walk up a chair until it tips over and you walk off the back of the chair, back onto the stage. The chair has to be in exactly the right position but this night something went wrong and I remember flipping right over and ending up lying flat on my back staring up at the lights in front of two thousand people! The band, who couldn’t see me, kept on playing and somehow we managed to finish the number!

What was the best Christmas present you ever had?

“I remember flipping right over and ending up lying flat on my back staring up at the lights in front of two thousand people!” Have you any advice you’d give to aspiring actors? Don’t! But if you really want to try for an acting career be prepared for great highs and great lows! This year we’re looking forward to seeing you as the villainous Fleshcreep in Jack and the Beanstalk at Fareham’s Ferneham Hall. What do you like about appearing in panto? I love stirring up the audience, especially the kids – they’re the greatest audience in the world. Being part of panto means you’re

A Truck Transporter Dinky Toy when I was about seven. As an adult, I once got to drive the real thing at Bulford Army Camp – it was absolutely massive! What’s on the horizon for 2014? I’m due to be in a musical about the Small Faces called ‘All or Nothing’. I’m playing the part of Don Arden, their manager (and Sharon Osbourne’s father), who had a fearsome reputation as a real tough guy. We’re planning to take the show on tour, so hopefully we’ll be bringing it down to this area at some stage. John is appearing in Jack and the Beanstalk at Fareham’s Ferneham Hall this Christmas. Spotlight on… Fareham Meon Rotary Club The Rotary movement was started in 1905 in Chicago as a networking organisation but soon developed into a group of community and international service clubs. There are now nearly 30,000 clubs in over 170 countries, with a male and female membership of over 1.2 million. The Rotary International motto is ‘Service Above Self’ and the organisation’s main goal in recent years has been the elimination of the crippling disease Polio from the world. This aim has now nearly been achieved and there are now only 0.1% cases in three or four affected countries. As a result, many thousands of children no longer face a life of major disability. There are four Rotary Clubs in Fareham including Fareham Meon, which celebrated its 30th year in 2011. Fareham Meon currently has 35 members but is always very keen to welcome more. We meet weekly on Wednesday evenings to enjoy a meal plus listen to an interesting guest speaker or participate in discussions about plans for the future.

“Members enjoy great fellowship with like minded folk.” Apart from local and international community service, members enjoy great fellowship with like minded folk but also have fun doing so with several social and fund raising events

throughout the year. The club’s Christmas Santa Float is well known locally and helps raise some of the essential funds necessary for the club’s work. Other fund raising events include a lottery, race and theatre evenings and an auction of promises etc. Some of the local organisations that have been helped are the Basics Food Bank, The Rainbow Centre, two local scout groups, Fareham Pensioners Luncheon Club, young carers holidays at Fairthorn Activity Centre and leadership events for teenagers in the New Forest. Some members also provide transport for the blind and infirm to enable them to attend their clubs etc. At Christmas decorated shoe boxes filled with small gifts are collected and dispatched as gifts for children ranging in age from 1 to 15 years and this year will be dispatched to disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and the Philippines. Our club regularly contributes 1,000 boxes towards a total of nearly 25,000 from our District. Also internationally the club contributes to natural disaster relief, water aid and eye camps. Lucketts Travel, Titchfield Motor Works and K100 Quality Kitchens are our local Business Partners. If you would like to get involved or just want to know more about our Rotary Club, contact Rotarian Brian Ray on 01329 668061 or email the rayhouse@virginmedia.com

Pour the condensed milk into a mixing bowl and add the icing sugar and mix together until you get a nice stiff dough. I find it easier to mix in just over half the icing sugar and then fold the rest into the dough mixture by hand. 2. Add the peppermint extract and food colouring until you get a nice peppermint colour. 3. Dust the worktop with icing sugar and roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Cut out rounds or any other shape you wish. Place them on a sheet of non-stick baking paper and pop them in the fridge for 2-3 hours. Melt the chocolate and decorate your shapes or dip them in half way. Store in the fridge.
