Down the Allotment with Susan

This is the time of year that you can really enjoy the fruits of your labour - watching everything grow from the initial twisting stems of the climbing beans making their way up the sticks, to tasting the first raspberries and strawberries – it remains a delight every year.

“It is hard to beat the beautiful flavour of fruit that has been left to ripen naturally in the sun.” It is hard to beat the beautiful flavour of fruit that has been left to ripen naturally in the sun rather than being picked to look good in the shop, by which time it has lost all its taste. The longer fruit is stored prior to eating, the more the natural sugars will break down and the more the flavour will diminish too. It is always best to pick fruit and vegetables and cook them as soon as possible to really enjoy them at their best. My peas are doing really well this year as well as the dwarf beans and rhubarb, however I think all the potatoes may well have blight - you have to take the ups with the downs, unfortunately. I have to report though that my war against slugs is definitely going my way, as the recent hot weather has resulted

in them finding somewhere else to hide! It does mean I’m having to water the plot more throughout this dry weather but if you can concentrate the water only on the plants it helps to keep the weeds down, although it is amazing how dry a soil they can still thrive on. If you have a compost bin, don’t forget to water that too as it helps it to rot down quicker. This year I have tried to keep on top of the weeds by doing small amounts each day, I also encourage my son to help with the watering while I weed but he keeps getting distracted eating the peas, raspberries and strawberries! I can’t blame him though, after all that is what having an allotment is all about.

“My war against slugs is definitely going my way.” I have some beautiful yellow courgettes, along with some more unusual squash plants. I like to choose varieties that you can’t necessarily get in the shops; it brightens things up when so many things are green! The kohlrabi is still coming along and although it is nowhere near mature yet, I am still hopeful for an autumn harvest. I will let you know next time if it was worth growing...

g!

Happy harvestin Susan

Go Batty About Reading This Summer…. Many Forget-Me-Not readers will be familiar with the Summer Reading Challenge run every year through the Hampshire Library Service. This year’s theme is ‘Creepy House’ and children will be challenged to read (or share with a grown up) six library books. Any book counts, so it might be a story book, a picture book, poetry, a joke book, a book about dinosaurs, or even an audio book – whatever your child enjoys reading! It’s easy to join in and it’s all free. Just visit your local library with your child and their library card - if they don’t yet have one, staff will be delighted to issue one. Then simply register for ‘Creepy House’, borrow your first books, and enjoy them at home. When they return, your child will receive a ‘Creepy House’ poster and stickers to put on it for every book that they have read or shared. They will get to explore the Awful Upstairs, the Gruesome Ground Floor and the Spinetingling Cellar, and will discover that some of the character stickers in the Creepy House are a bit smelly! When they reach six books, your child will be rewarded with a certificate and a medal. The Challenge runs from Saturday 13th July to Saturday 14th September and is aimed at children aged 4 to 11. It’s a great way to encourage a child’s love of books in the run up to starting school or to catch the imagination of older children too. Don’t worry if you are away at the beginning of the school holidays because your child can join in when

they return – and if you’re going on a long car journey, why not take some audio books to keep everybody entertained on the road? To find your nearest library and when it’s open visit the library website at http://www3.hants.gov.uk/library/library-finder. htm There is also a website for children related to the challenge - The Summer Reading Challenge website allows your child to log the books they have read and unlock extra content as they work through the Challenge. They can also find new books to read, recommended by other children, take part in a story writing competition and play online games - for more information check out www. summerreadingchallenge.org.uk Last year, nearly 24,000 children signed up for the Challenge in Hampshire and the Library Service looks forward to welcoming even more children in 2013!

Getting to Know... Why was the Mary Rose built?

The exciting new £27 million Mary Rose Museum, based at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, recently opened its doors to visitors and has already been heralded as one of the UK’s ‘must see’ attractions. As one of Henry VIII’s warships, this Tudor ship is the only sixteenth century warship on display anywhere in the world and the brand new Museum built around her reunites her with many of her 19,000 artefacts and crew. We were lucky enough to catch up with Henry VIII himself to find out more about this most famous of ships...

Well, I’d just become King, and I was a bit concerned that the French might try and invade. While I’d inherited a few ships from my father, Henry VII, I still needed some new ships. I got my shipwrights in Southampton to design two ships, one 400 tons, the other 300 tons, and at the new shipyards at Portsmouth they built them. The smaller one was named Peter Pomegranate (I renamed it the Peter later after my first marriage ended, as the Pomegranate was Catherine of Aragon’s family symbol), and the larger one was the Mary Rose. People claim I named it after my sister, who I must admit was a favourite, but as she might be reading this I can’t deny that. I’ll just mention that I may have been inspired by the Virgin Mary, who was also known as ‘the Mystic Rose’… Tell us about the ship’s crew... Most of them were poor, and had been in my service since they were children. As well as the ordinary and able seamen, there were the gun crews, most of who were very experienced and had been doing the job for years. There were also troops, such as my Bowmen, who had to be able to shoot 12 arrows a minute from a 100 lb bow, as well as mercenaries from Italy, Germany and Switzerland. What was everyday life like on board the Mary Rose? Officers had it quite good; you didn’t really have to do much except tell everyone else what to do, while enjoying the musicians aboard. For the poor sailors it would have been tougher. You slept on the floor, you had no personal space and, of course, you were expected to fight in close, confined conditions. It wasn’t all bad though, they

Henry VIII got paid a reasonable amount, had one of my Barber-surgeons available in case of injury, and they got fed, which wasn’t always an option on land!

“Officers had it quite good; you didn’t really have to do much except tell everyone else what to do, while enjoying the musicians aboard.” What was the food like on board? Well, not as good as the fine dining I like to enjoy, but we kept them well fed! Every day they were issued with eight biscuits, a pound of beef (or fish if it was Sunday), broth from the galley, some seasonal vegetables and, most importantly, a gallon of beer. Officers got nicer food - venison and wine as well as stews. All this stuff would be cooked in the galleys we had built into the bottom of the ship, amazing things, every ship should have one – and the Mary Rose had two!

What type of weapons did she carry? The very best money could buy! She had bronze cannons, culverins, sakers, falcons and slings, some of them from the top arms manufacturers in Italy, as well as iron portpieces, fowlers, top pieces and bases. She also carried hundreds of longbows, made of the finest Spanish Yew, as well as the latest hand guns. Tell us about the Mary Rose’s military career? Oh, she was a magnificent warship! She took troops to the Battle of Flodden Field, battered the Grand Louise at the Battle of St Mathieu and helped obliterate the city of Morlaix! She was also involved in the siege of Brest, but that didn’t go as well. In times of peace, she spent a lot of time on the Thames but was available to escort me to the Field of the Cloth of Gold, where I met with that cheating swine the King of France - as if he could beat me fairly in a wrestling match! I also dined aboard her with Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor - nice chap, huge chin, shame we ended up falling out when I left his Aunt for a younger model! How did the Mary Rose sink? That’s a bit of a touchy subject, I’m not entirely sure as it was hard to see from the coast. The French claim that they did it but there are also claims that Admiral Carew onboard was unable to control his crew – we never worked out how it happened back in 1545, and I doubt we’ll ever find out. To find out more about the Mary Rose Museum visit www.historicdockyard.co.uk or call 023 9272 8060. Pictures copyright of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and © The Mary Rose Trust

Are you a member of the National Trust? If so, you may not be aware that local National Trust support groups exist. The Portsmouth and District Centre is your local group and meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month (except August) at 7.30pm at the Discovery Centre, St John’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Edinburgh Road, Portsmouth, for a wide variety of interesting talks. There is free parking at the time of our meetings, with level access and full facilities for the disabled. There is a bookstall available and tea and coffee are served after the meeting.

“Our aim is to promote the work of the National Trust and to raise funds towards projects at various local properties.” Our activities include outings four times a year, to both National Trust properties and other places of interest. We have recently visited Chartwell, the home of Sir Winston Churchill, in Kent, Montacute House in Somerset, and Avebury Manor which was the subject of a television programme about the project to restore the property. Our last outing of the year will be to Salisbury in September. We also arrange spring,

National Trust Portsmouth & District

autumn and Christmas lunches and a holiday in May. Next year we are planning to spend six days based in Bristol, which will include time in Bath and Wells and visits to other National Trust properties in the area. Walks take place every other month throughout the year, and a bring and buy stall and Christmas raffle are also held. The yearly subscription is £3 and there is an entrance charge to our meetings of £3.50 for members and £4 for visitors, which helps to cover the cost of hiring the hall. Our aim is to promote the work of the National Trust and to raise funds towards projects at various local properties. For example, we recently gave money for barriers to mark out the overflow car park at The Devil’s Punch Bowl at Hindhead and also for a microscope attachment to identify bugs at Uppark. The Centre also has links with Hinton Ampner and Mottisfont Abbey where some of us spent a wet, but very enjoyable evening recently, visiting the rose garden (see photo).

Don’t Let Headaches Ruin Your Life... Most of us get headaches at some point in our lives. There are many different reasons why they occur and lots of different ways to cure them, including some weird and wonderful ‘remedies’ going back through the centuries.

In Neolithic times, headaches were thought to be caused by evil spirits. If you lived in the Middle Ages you may well have been told to wipe a potato on your forehead. Supposedly, when the potato turned black the headache was gone. In Ancient Rome, dried cabbage was put into the ear as a sure fire ‘cure’ for this ailment. In Neolithic times, headaches were thought to be caused by evil spirits. To rid people of these evil spirits holes were drilled into the skull - somewhat surprisingly, some of these people survived to tell the tale! People have been using herbs for many years to cure headaches. The herb feverfew is commonly used and can be drunk as a tea by boiling the leaves. Other herbs taken as tea are peppermint, lemon balm, rosemary and ginger. Rosemary and lavender oils can be rubbed into the neck muscles to ease the tension of a headache. Nowadays, a lot of people turn to headache medication to help, but recently the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence

(NICE) revealed that “as many as 1 in 50 people suffer continual headaches because of medication overuse”. This starts by taking one tablet once in a while, when this tablet works, the individual starts taking more and more. The overall result is that the more a person takes, the less effect the tablets have on them. NICE also found that “the people at risk are those who are taking paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen, for their headaches for 15 days a month or more”.

People have been using herbs for many years to cure headaches. As an Osteopath, I see a lot of people with headaches. I have found the most effective treatment for headaches is cranio-sacral therapy. Cranio-sacral therapy is a hands-on treatment which uses the lightest of touches to decompress the body’s internal fluid pressure system. It works on pressure points and increases blood to the brain so also helps with circulation. I work on the cause of the headache and not on the symptoms someone presents with. After treatment, a lot of people feel more relaxed, sleep better and have less recurring headaches and decreasing neck pain. Many thanks to Kamila Przekop for this article. To find out more visit www.osteopathyclinic.org or call 07941 060020.
