Summer season will kick off with the Open Gardens event on Sunday 15th May, with Forgan Arts classes starting on the 24th May and continuing through until 10th September. Please check the website for new pop up workshops and any additional classes to come over the summer!

Forgan Arts Family Open Day. Celebrate the last day of term at Forgan Arts Centre! Pop across for strawberries and ice-cream and join in a variety of art activities. We will be open from 12 – 4pm to provide family fun for all!
Open Gardens Event
Sunday 15th May I 1pm – 5pm
For the annual Scotland’s Gardens scheme, the gardens at Willowhill, Tayfield and St Fort Woodland Garden, will open to visitors. Entry to the three Gardens is £5 through www.scotlandsgardens.org. There will be a plant sale at Willowhill. Forgan Arts Centre will be open to provide tea, coffee, cake and exhibition for £2.50. All monies raised from the Open Gardens will be donated to both Forgan Arts and Scotland’s Gardens Beneficiary charities.
Pottery These classes are designed to cater for all abilities, from complete beginners to advanced students. With a BA hons in fine art, Heather has been teaching locally for over 15 years, and covers all methods of making, from hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching and slab work, to throwing pots on the wheel! She will be on hand to give demonstrations and advice and you will learn about the different glazing methods and techniques you can use to create your finished work. Charcoal Drawing Nichola graduated in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone, winning many prestigious awards. Working from her studio in Fife, she exhibits widely, with work in private international collections. In these classes you will explore the use and effects of charcoal through observational drawing. Thursdays 5 Week Observational Drawing with Charcoal. Choose one or both courses below: 26th May to 30th June, 7pm – 9pm I 11th August to 8th September, 7pm – 9pm Per Course: Adults £60 I Members £40 This 5 week course will consist of working from still-life using charcoal. All abilities welcome with no experience necessary, materials are supplied. Students will learn about composition, measuring, tonal values, materials and much more. Saturdays 1 day Charcoal Drawing Workshops. Choose one or both sessions below: 25th June, 10am – 3pm I 20th August, 10am – 3pm Per Workshop: Adults £45 I Members £36 An all day workshop focusing on drawing with charcoal from still-life. All abilities are welcome with no experience necessary. Materials are supplied. Please bring a packed lunch, tea and coffee are available at the centre.
Art On Your Sleeve – Creative Sewing Ever fancied making your own quirky clothing? Jill Skulina, a Master of Fine Art and owner of textile label ‘Jack-et’, will guide you through the creative process of a textile artist, using decorative skills such as mark making and embellishment. Thursdays 6 week course of creative sewing. Choose one or both courses below: 26th May to 30th June, 6.30pm – 8.30pm I 4th August to 8th September, 6.30pm to 8.30pm Per Course: Adults £60 I Members £48 I Youths £30 In this creative class, you will learn to use dye, embroidery and applique techniques, before designing your garment and drawing your own pattern to make your unique piece. Your imagination is the limit in this fun filled class for all skill levels and abilities. Age 15+
Wonders of Watercolour Liz Dulley is a talented artist and tutor, with work exhibited by The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. Her explorative approach brings life to her work, and her teaching, in these stimulating classes. We have two workshops this summer to choose from: Saturday 2nd July, 10am – 2.30pm
Foliage with feeling Through line, blots, drops, and spattering, Liz will guide you through this exciting workshop to capture the feeling of your chosen plant material, using mark making and colour. You will be able to explore your individual response to the subject and create your unique representation. Saturday 30th July, 10am – 2.30pm
Textures in Landscape Using watercolour paints, Liz will demonstrate exciting techniques to build up texture, including spattering, diffusing and printing. You will have the opportunity to choose your own subject, experiment, explore and create a unique landscape painting, succulent in texture. Per Workshop: Adults £45 I Members £36 Please bring a packed lunch, tea and coffee available at the centre.
Children’s Sun Print Photography With a background in medical and forensic photography, Kit Martin practices digital photography and alternative processes, primarily cyanotype. Currently working with The University of St Andrews, she is an accomplished artist offering fun workshops for families at Forgan Arts. Come and try out an old photographic technique dating from 1842, using the sun to expose prints. Kit will introduce you to printing cyanotypes in the sun using natural materials, without a camera! Weather permitting, the workshop includes a short walk to forage for natural materials. AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY! Candle Making Join Alison Hawley of Beesy’s beeswax candles, an experienced, friendly and knowledgeable tutor at Forgan Arts Centre, for her popular candle making workshop. Alison begins her class with an introduction to beeswax, its history and modern day uses. She covers the environmental and health benefits of using beeswax, before showing examples of the materials in both their raw and finished form. Alison will teach the techniques needed to roll and sculpt the wax to build candles into various forms in these fun packed workshops for all ages. Saturday 4th June, 10.30am – 12.30pm
Multi-colour candles: Alison will show you how to make a selection of colourful striped candles, where you will have the opportunity to experiment with the different coloured waxes in order to make your own designs. You will also learn how make a set of inlaid candles and to finish, fold an origami gift box to present them in. Saturday 2nd July, 10.30am – 12.30pm
A Midsummer Night’s Dream In this workshop, Alison will demonstrate how to make heart shaped candles and fold an origami gift box to display them in. Afterwards you will choose your colours again to create a pair of long ‘magic wand’ candles and to conclude, a beautiful conical candle. Bookbinding Sofia is an Italian illustrator. She studied painting and Fine Arts in Milan and editorial illustration in Bologna, where she specialized in illustrations for magazines and education. Learn the different book binding techniques such as Occidental or Japanese binding in this exciting and creative class. Using different colours and textured papers with simple stitching and folding techniques, you can create a beautiful hand-bound book to keep photographs, recipes, sketches and secrets! Dressmaking Beatrice Burns is a highly skilled dressmaker and tutor here at Forgan Arts and has taught in the community for many years. This summer Beatrice is offering two one day workshops where you can brush up on your sewing skills or even learn right from the beginning! Saturday 23rd July, 10am – 4pm
Beginners sewing Learn the basic sewing machine skills and stitches needed to create a simple piece to take home in one day, such as a bag or a cushion cover. Once you have mastered the techniques you’ll be making and fixing all sorts in no time! Saturday 20th August 10am – 4pm
Sewing Bea For those who already have basic sewing skills, this is a chance to undertake a small open project to brush up on those skills, or to utilise the experience of your tutor. Perhaps you want to finish a garment you had already started, or want to create your own unique piece from scratch? Beatrice will guide you through your plans, helping you to achieve your final product. Per Workshop: Adults £45 I Members £36
The Soul of Art This is a workshop looking at the soul of art. What is art? Why do we need art? What is it to be an Artist? Working with methods of shamanic journeying and tapping into the realm of communication and message making, you will go into a whole new level of appreciation for what the art machine is all about. You will get to use image making and writing as part of the process. Upholstery for Beginners An exciting class for those new to upholstery or continuing with a current project. Jacqueline will guide you through a variety of techniques and introduce you to the equipment needed for a small upholstery project. There is a limited number of tools available at the centre for the class to share. You may choose to invest in your own along the way. You will need to bring a piece of furniture to work on to get started. Don’t worry! This needn’t be expensive. Jacqueline Donachie is an experienced upholstery tutor, if you need advice on a suitable project or where to source furniture, you can contact her on: firstname.lastname@example.org and she will be more than happy to assist. Tuesdays, 7.30 – 9.30pm 12 week course run over 2 blocks. Knitting Group A social morning knitting group,where new members are always welcome. Tuition and mutual support are shared amongst complete beginners and experienced knitters. If you would like to join, please contact the centre. With Tessa Durham I Tuesdays 9.15am to 11.15am To attend this class you must become a Forgan Member (£30 for annual membership). Thereafter, classes will be just £2 per session.
Sewing Bee Social Sewing Bee is a social gathering of people who like to sew, drink tea and blether! New members are welcomed, it’s a great way to pick up new tips, share ideas, and spend an afternoon! Thursdays 2pm – 4pm If you would like to join, please contact the centre. To attend you must become a member of Forgan Arts Centre ( £30 for annual membership). Thereafter, classes will be just £2 per session.
Want to become a member? You donâ€™t have to become a member to attend our classes, however it dramatically reduces the cost of your course and any other classes throughout the year, as well as helping to support the centre itself. Membership currently costs ÂŁ30 for the year and can be purchased at the centre.
