FRESH FORMS: FREE! CERAMICS PROJECT We are working with ‘PREVENT’ to deliver an anti-smoking message to young people in the hope to prevent future tobacco use in young people. For 3 weeks we will work to create ceramic artwork together which will create a digital journey and a final exhibition of work. For the project we shall be running three ceramic workshops for 14-24 year olds to participate, where you can share your prevent message through the clay. This could be by incorporating drawings and text into your creations; through sculptures, wall hangings, vessels or whatever your mind conjures. We hope to focus on the positivity of not smoking, and welcome tongue in cheek humour and whacky ideas to share your thoughts.

eek humour and whacky ideas to share your thoughts.

GET FIRED UP! What message would you send? What message would speak to you? During the 3 ceramics sessions, we encourage you to take pictures of your progress, sketches, ideas, thoughts and to post words and visuals on a digital page created by our group for the project. The work will be shown in an exhibition at the end of summer, which we encourage the students to work towards. Pieces will be available to take home at the end of the exhibition. This collaborative project will take place in two venues. One in Forgan arts Centre, Newport and one in East Nook Studio, St Andrews. We have 8 free places available in each venue. KIDS HOLIDAY CLUBS FORGAN KIDS ART & CERAMICS CLUB Our ever popular ‘Forgan Kids Art Club’ will be running during the Summer holidays, offering an exciting club full of arts and crafts for primary aged children. Jam-packed with creative fun for those looking to be inspired and for little hands to be kept busy! With our experienced Play leaders and artists, the children can engage in a variety of activities and mini workshops such as pottery, printing, building, painting and more! With the success of Ceramics during the last clubs, where possible we will have a pottery session each day. The children will get to experiment with different techniques of stamping shapes, playing with textures, hand building pots and model making. At points there will be a chance to have a shot on the pottery wheel to throw small pots to decorate and fire. This is a unique opportunity for the children to work with ceramics and immerse themselves in arts and crafts over the holiday. Where the weather allows, we may take some activities outdoors. We would also hope to take walks to forage for foliage to use in our crafts, allowing the children to explore new textures and techniques. Children will need to bring a packed lunch each day, snack and refreshments will be provided.

We only have a small number of places, so book now to avoid disappointment! Alana comes from a background of textiles and ceramics and graduated with first class honors in Jewellery and metal design at Duncan Of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, before setting up her own jewellery and contemporary craft business East Nook Studio, in St Andrews. Creating silver and mixed media jewellery, Alana offers a host of classes to keep your hands busy and your imaginations full!

The first week we will look at cutting and shaping the metal, applying textures with a variety of tools and rolling techniques. We will practice soldering with a small blow torch to bond two pieces of metal together, before looking at the process of ‘cleaning up’ your samples to give them a polished finish and discussing how they could be turned into a piece of jewellery should you wish to continue with jewellery making. In the second week we will concentrate on making a silver ring, utilising the techniques that you have learned and furthering your skills. You may want to bring a notebook to jot down ideas and processes for future reference. If you have enjoyed the introduction, you might wish to attend the further jewellery class where you can begin to make a collection of silver jewellery. POTTERY TECHNIQUES: Sgraffito & Mishima Irene Coulthard returns to her pottery roots to teach a variety of decorative ceramic techniques complimenting the regular day and evening pottery classes at Forgan Arts Centre. Previously trading as KC Ceramics, Irene taught regular classes on slip casting and painting techniques and for more than 6 years, wrote regular monthly articles for Popular Crafts magazine showing step by step instructions on how to cast, fire and decorate hobby ceramic items. Allowing time for drying and firing pieces between sessions, this 2 part workshop will show how to transfer designs to green ware (unfired clay) and demonstrate the sgraffito technique to decorate a flat plaque. You will also learn the Japanese Mishima technique of inlaying slip or underglaze into a contrasting clay body, on your small tile or dish. You will be taught to carve, colour and texture your pieces before their final glazing, learning about the many steps and processes involved in creating pottery. Suitable for beginners, and those looking to add some decorative techniques to their ceramic skills. Final pieces can be collected from the Centre a week after the final workshop.
