to spring term at Forgan Arts Centre! Our new Spring season opens with classes starting on Monday 17th April and continuing through until Friday 23rd June. Spring classes will run for durations of 5 to 10 weeks. With many new classes and workshops, there’s lots to get excited about! Some of our regular classes are taking a break this term, but don’t fret, they will be back with us soon! As we cater for a wide range of age groups, we have added a key to help you find the classes available to the age group that you require. These will appear in each class or workshop listing, to show which age groups that it is open to. Please see any further age restrictions within the listing. Adults

Want to become a member? You don’t have to become a member to attend our classes, however it dramatically reduces the cost of your course and any other classes throughout the year, as well as helping to support the Centre. Membership costs £30 for the year and can be purchased at the Centre or through our website.

OPEN GARDENS EVENT Sunday 14 May 1pm – 4.30pm For the annual Scotland’s Gardens scheme, the gardens at Willowhill, Tayfield and St Fort Woodland Garden, will open to visitors. Entry to the three Gardens is £5 through www.scotlandsgardens.org. There will be a plant sale at Willowhill. Forgan Arts Centre will be open to provide tea, coffee, cake and an exhibition for £2.50. All monies raised from the Open Gardens will be donated to both Forgan Arts and Scotland’s Gardens beneficiary charities.

We are pleased to have received funding from ‘White Stuff’ lifestyle brand in the Autumn to brighten up our playground. Now that Spring is here, we would like to invite the local community to come along and help us to decorate plant pots, plant up some foliage to grow a pretty environment, and have lots of fun! A rewarding day of family fun is ahead, with games for the children and gardening crafts for all of our helpers to enjoy. To sign up, please contact the office. If you are interested in helping out, we are looking for lots of green fingers to lend a hand! Please do get in touch. Any additional donations of plant pots, tools or equipment will be gratefully received.


FORGAN KIDS ART CLUB P After a successful run during both the summer and October holidays, Forgan Arts Centre will open once again for its ‘Forgan Kids Art Club’, this Easter holiday. An exciting club full of arts and crafts and jam-packed with fun for those looking to be inspired over the holiday period. With our experienced Play leaders and artists, the children will be able to engage in a variety of activities and mini workshops such as pottery, printing, sewing, building, and painting. Where the weather allows, we like to take activities out door and the children display their work in the ‘fairy lit cabin’.

Monday 3 to Friday 14 April, 9.30am – 2.30pm for age 5-12 years. Pricing: £20 per day, £90 per week or £170 for the fortnight.

Children will require a packed lunch. Snack, refreshments and materials are provided. We only have a small number of places, so book now to avoid disappointment! Please see our website for further details.


UPHOLSTERY FOR BEGINNERS: with Jaqueline Donachie

A

An exciting class for those new to upholstery or continuing with a current Forgan project. Jacqueline will guide you through a variety of techniques and introduce you to the equipment needed for a small upholstery project. There is a limited number of tools available at the Centre for the class to share. You may choose to invest in your own along the way. To get started you will need a measuring tape, tailors chalk, fabric scissors and to bring a piece of furniture to work on. Don’t worry! This needn’t be expensive. POTTERY We have several pottery classes for adults and children plus a new family class, for children to come along to with or without their parents. These classes are designed to cater for all abilities, from complete beginners to advanced students. Forgan boasts two wonderful pottery tutors: Pat Peters and Heather Gilbert PAT has been teaching for many years at both Waid Academy and Forgan Arts Centre. Pat is a highly qualified and experienced potter with a wealth of knowledge in both wheel work and hand building. Pat will teach you everything you need to know from creating a piece to adding texture, pattern or perfecting the finish of your ceramics. HEATHER With a BA (HONS) in Fine Art, Heather has been teaching locally for over 15 years, and covers all methods of making, from hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching and slab work, to throwing pots on the wheel! She will be on hand to give demonstrations and advice, and you will learn about the different glazing methods and techniques you can use to create your finished work.

ARTS

A NEW! OIL PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS Nichola Martin graduated in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone, winning many prestigious awards. Working from her studio in Fife, she exhibits widely, with work in private international collections. In these classes students will be taught the fundamental techniques of drawing and painting, such as shading, mixing colour, composition and dimensions. First learning to draw before proceeding to painting, students will be taught about colour mixing techniques, colour values and how brush strokes can be applied in various ways. PAINTING A A professional member of the Society of Scottish Artists, John Johnstone has been teaching students at Forgan Arts Centre for over 25 years. Having studied and taught at Duncan of Jordanstone for many years, John travelled Europe painting and exhibited across London. This is an extremely popular class for all levels of ability and confidence. A relaxed working environment where you can work freely in any medium that you prefer, with guidance and advice from John throughout. You can work from your table, at an easel or even astride a donkey! WONDERS OF WATERCOLOUR A Liz Dulley is a talented artist and tutor, with work exhibited by The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. In these stimulating classes, Liz’s explorative approach brings life to her work and teaching. Specially designed classes tailored to the individual’s abilities, for learning or improving painting skills, gaining confidence and finding out what you can really do with watercolours. From laying d own washes, painting without a paintbrush to building up pattern and textures, Liz teaches exciting techniques using various water-based mediums. A Y S NEW! CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATION AND CARDS For all levels of ability. Learn illustration with Sofia Sita, a talented Italian painter and illustrator based in Dundee. Graduating in Fine Arts in Milan and Editorial Illustration in Bologna, Sofia has exhibited internationally and had work published with many popular magazines. A structured course where beginners will focus on shorter tasks and projects within the illustration genres of children’s books and greeting cards. The course will offer various presentations preparing the student for working on future self-initiated projects. Part 1: Illustration for Children’s books. Looking at and understanding narrative in children’s books, create your illustrated zine or small book with your character creation. Part 2: Using your illustrations for gift cards. Covering design, layout and backgrounds for creating your own greeting cards. The perfect class for those looking for an introduction or reintroduction to art. Get back to basics and fall in love with art again! Adela Crone studied Visual Communication at Grays School of Art, and has been teaching art for the past 4 years. With a talent and passion for all forms of art, Adela will help you hone in and sharpen your artistic skills! This class will cover the basics of fundamental drawing and painting techniques. Adela will cover all aspects of drawing and painting including measuring, tones, shading, proportions and colour mixing. You will learn to use a variety of both wet and dry media. Each class will have a short demonstration before you begin to tackle the subject for yourself! NEW! SKATE AND REJUVENATE WORKSHOP A Class in Fresh Skateboard Art Blair McCafferty of the Creature Emporium, has a degree in Graphic Design and a passion for all things skateboarding. Previously sponsored by Deathbox, Converse, Jart Skateboards and Dephect skate brands, Blair has campaigned for skateparks and facilities since he was a young lad and recently had a hand in the design, fund raising and build of Newport-on-Tay’s skatepark. Working freelance, he describes himself as a full time doodle monkey who likes to create cute graffiti and fun street art. In this all day workshop, Blair will be teaching you how to recycle your old and broken skateboards into wonderful works of art. This course teaches the art of creating stained glass mainly using the Tiffany style copper foil method and glass mosaic. TEXTILES DRESSMAKING A Beatrice Burns is a highly skilled dressmaker and tutor here at Forgan Arts and has taught in the community for many years. Come along and learn practical and creative techniques, have fun, and develop your own projects. Beatrice can advise you on what to bring to the class – the perfect chance to raid your wardrobe and fix all of those garments that don’t quite fit right. Or perhaps you would like to create something unique to you; from scratch. A Y S NEW! BOOKBINDING WORKSHOP Sofia Sita is an Italian illustrator. She studied painting and Fine Arts in Milan and Editorial Illustration in Bologna, where she specialised in illustrations for magazines and education. Learn the different book binding techniques such as Occidental and Japanese binding in this exciting and creative class. Using different colours and textures of paper with simple stitching and folding techniques, you can create a beautiful hand-bound book to keep photographs, recipes, sketches and secrets! A Y S NEW! PAPER HOUSES ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP Where would you like to live? Create your own unique and quirky 3D Paper Houses with Suzanne Scott from WhimSicAL LusH. Suzanne is an artist and illustrator based in Dundee, creating illustrations transformed into stationary, ceramics and wearable art. Most recently Suzanne was one of the artists for Dundee's fantastic Oor Wullie Bucket Trail. Her illustrations have been cast in bronze, forming Dundee’s Discovery Walk in Slessor Gardens, which are part of the ongoing Dundee Waterfront Project. Within the wide range of WhimSicAL LusH creations is a collection of beautiful little paper houses and Suzanne would like you to join her in creating one of your very own! You will be guided in using your imagination in storytelling through art as well as illustrating and constructing your own paper house. PHOTOGRAPHY Professional photographer and filmmaker Dylan Drummond will be leading our Photography classes over the Spring term. Dylan is the founder of Dundee based ‘Son of the Sea Film and Photography’, and his personal interest is photographing people and places. Co-Creator of ‘Humans of Dundee’, Dylan believes that a photograph tells a story and that everyone has a story to tell.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BEGINNERS This series of practical workshops will help you get the most out of your DSLR or Bridge camera and free up your creativity. The series of structured classes covers essential skills such as Avoiding camera shake, Composing the shot, Achieving good exposure, Demystifying the histogram, ISO and White Balance, Creative use of Aperture and Shutter speed, Accurate focussing, Using different lenses, Using flash and Getting your images printed. This class is geared towards cameras with manual settings for aperture, shutter speed and ISO, such as DSLR or Bridge cameras. You will need to bring a (fully charged!) camera and its manual, battery and an empty memory card. ADOBE CLASSES: * To take part in the practical work in the Adobe classes, you will need to bring a laptop with a recent edition of Photoshop installed, although you can choose to take notes and work practically from your PC when you get home. These classes follow on from each other, but may also be taken as stand alone classes.

INTRODUCTION to ADOBE LIGHTROOM * Lightroom is a useful tool that has become central to a Photographer’s workflow, and while it is powerful enough to be used independently, it also integrates seamlessly with programs like Photoshop. Perfect for those of you who want to organise, edit, enhance and share your photos. These classes will teach you the entire process through importing images from your camera to exporting the finished images for print and/or web. We will work together on the same sample images to compare individual outcomes. In this class we will cover: What Lightroom has to offer; how to import and organise your images; Processing Raw Files; Colour and Tone adjustments; Cropping, Noise reduction and Sharpening of images; Removing blemishes; How to add effects such as Colour and Monotone. 5 WEEK COURSE I beginning April 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16 TUESDAYS 10am – 12pm I Adults £60 I Members £45


INTRODUCTION to ADOBE PHOTOSHOP * Use Adobe Photoshop to unleash your digital creativity! Learn the essential tools and techniques to create images with unlimited imagination. Dylan will give you an overview of what Photoshop can offer and when to choose Photoshop over Lightroom*. He will teach you about Colour and Tone Adjustments, how to remove unwanted Items from an image and together you will explore the extensive Tool Box. FURTHER PHOTOSHOP * For those who have completed the Introduction to Photoshop class, or those who already have good Photoshop knowledge. This course is aimed at developing your understanding of Photoshop through the exploration of the vast range of techniques available for enhancing photographs and creating composite images, as well as using the powerful software to create high dynamic range, panoramic and focus stacked images. A Y P S NEW! SUN PRINT PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY! With a background in medical and forensic photography, Kit Martin practices digital photography and alternative processes, primarily cyanotype. Currently working with Dundee Print Studio, she is an accomplished artist offering fun workshops for families at Forgan Arts. Come and try out an old photographic technique from 1842, using the sun to expose prints. Kit will introduce you to printing cyanotypes in the sun using natural materials, without a camera! Weather permitting, the workshop includes a short walk to forage for natural resources. INTRODUCTION TO SONGWRITING

With Mark Urban of ‘Resound Creative Music-Making’. Would you like to write and perform your own songs, or perhaps as part of a group? In these fun classes, we will explore some of the key building blocks of songwriting. You will learn how to generate lyrics, create chord patterns, compose vocal melodies and structure your work. No previous experience is necessary, but those who play instruments should bring them along where possible. Vocalists, Wordsmiths and Rappers are welcomed. Digital software will be available for any non-instrumentalists who would like to create within an online studio. This class is aimed towards a performance of students’ work at the end of the course. Mark Urban writes and performs under the guise of Haystack Monolith and is also one half of post-apocalyptic skiffle duo St Kilda Mailboat. Mark is Co-founder of Resound, a travelling music school with the core philosophy that everyone is musical and everyone is capable of creating their own music... and in this class he will help you to do just that! 10 WEEK BLOCK I beginning April 20, 27, May 4, 11, 18, 25, June 1, 8, 15, 22 THURSDAYS 6.30PM – 8.30pm I £70 for secondary school aged pupils 11 – 18

A social knitting group, where new members are always welcome!

Sewing Bee is a social gathering of people who like to sew, drink tea and blether!

Tips, ticks and mutual support are shared amongst complete beginners and experienced knitters.

Private Hire Forgan is available for hire for workshops, rehearsals, meetings and events. We have a range of rooms to choose from – all well-equipped and spacious with excellent natural light. Please enquire at any time. Hire charge is £15 per hour.

Donations & Fundraising Forgan is a Registered Charity – donations are always welcome! Feel free to make an extra donation at your class, workshop or event if you’ve had a particularly good time! We’d love to hear your ideas for Fundraising events; get in touch if you’d like to be involved in this very important aspect of our work. All funds go towards sustaining the activities that Forgan already offers to our community, while allowing us to adapt and grow.

We strive to continue to develop connections in our community and we welcome your collaboration.

Committee A crucial part of Forgan life is the role of the voluntary Committee, which has done a fantastic job of running the Centre over the years and continues to do so. We are always interested to hear from potential new Committee members. If you’d like to be involved in shaping the future of Forgan, please get in touch.

Booking Terms and Conditions You do not need to be a member of Forgan Arts Centre to book a course, however, members benefit from the privilege of early booking, and from significant class discounts so it is recommended. Memberships are a great way to support the centre. Bookings will not be fully secured until payment has been made, and you have received confirmation. Payment has to be made at the time of booking and before the start of a course or you may lose your place. All booking payments include a non-refundable deposit of £10. If you wish to cancel a booking, your refund will be issued by BACS bank transfer, minus this charge. No refund will be issued if cancellation occurs on the day of a workshop or event, or after that date has passed, in the event of non-attendance. Course fees apply to the full course and no partial refund can be given for missed classes. In the event of tutor illness or the centre being closed for bad weather, alternate dates will be provided to ensure the full number of classes has been offered. If a course or event is cancelled by the centre due to unforeseen circumstances, you will be issued with a full refund. Some of the classes may incur an additional charge for materials. Your tutor will advise you at the start of your course.
