Stop Smoking with Hypnotherapy “I SMOKED 20 A DAY FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND A HYPNOTHERAPIST STOPPED ME SMOKING IN ONE SESSION!” Have you ever tried to stop smoking? It’s damned hard isn’t it! It’s very similar to having an abusive relationship with a lover – you just can’t give it up – no matter how bad it is for you! Well, help is at hand. Elaine Hodgins, Clinical Hypnotist and expert in Stop Smoking programmes has helped hundreds (if not thousands of smokers) give up. She has two clinics, one in Harley St in the centre of London and the other in Woodley in Berkshire. Moira Dobson, from Reading, says: “I was recommended to see Elaine by my GP as I was struggling with high blood pressure and emphysema. I had smoked for over 30 years and usually smoked between 20 and 30 a day. I had tried absolutely everything to give up – patches, gum, acupuncture, meditation etc… but nothing worked! So, that day in January last year, I vowed that this would be my year to stop smoking and to save my life. I was sceptical of course but I really wanted to stop! I needn’t have been because Elaine was fantastic, in fact I have referred many of my smoking friends to her and they have all successfully quit too! After the first session, I came out feeling extremely positive, I didn’t want a cigarette and in fact have not wanted one since that day almost a year ago. My health has improved no end and my purse is certainly much fatter! In fact, I worked out the other day that I have saved over £3000 in the past year through not smoking. I won’t even calculate how much I must have spent on cigarettes over the past 30 years – probably in the region of £30,000! It doesn’t bear thinking about does it! But what’s more important is our health! Yes, If you want to stop smoking ( or lose weight, or cure an addiction) I would definitely go and see Elaine at Focus Hypnotherapy – she is the best – worth every penny!” If you, like Moira, would like to stop smoking, cure a phobia, lose weight, increase your concentration and motivation do go and see Elaine – she helps so many people in so many ways. Apart from working with adults Elaine also works with children from 3 – 18 years of age. She told me: “Working with children is amazing as they have wonderful imaginations and they don’t even know I am doing hypnosis as it’s all done subliminally with games and role play, stories and a lot of fun. I treat children for severe picky eating (Selective Eating Disorder), Phobias, social anxiety, separation anxiety, sleep problems, bedwetting, stool holding, lack of concentration, ADHD, OCD, and I also help a lot of teenagers with motivation to study and concentrate on their revision at exam time!! Hypnosis is CHILD’S play!” she laughed. Please quote FOREMOST when calling an advertiser. www.foremostdirectory.co.uk

How To Achieve Strong Healthy Hair All that partying, hair products, dehydration, sleep deprivation and the damp weather can play havoc with our locks. Read below for our tips on how to keep your hair in tip top condition. It’s true what they say: ‘You are what you eat’. Which is why looking after yourself on the inside, as well as the outside can really affect the look and feel of your skin, hair and nails. Shiny, healthy hair is a sign of great health, so how do we strengthen and protect our luscious locks?

Washing To encourage beautiful hair, we need to start with the basics to ensure our health regime is giving us the best opportunity to shine, literally. Over washing can cause your hair to dry out as you are robbing your hair of natural oils, causing your hair to look dull and lifeless. Try to wash hair as little as possible, no more than every other day, if you can avoid it. Paul Mitchell offers a Cruelty-Free Strength & Clarifying Duo, which works to strengthen and revitalise your hair. It also leaves your hair feeling more manageable as it works to increase the elasticity of your locks.

Be Gentle Rubbing, and brushing hair when wet can cause breakages too. Wet hair is delicate so treat it gently to avoid getting split ends. Gently squeeze wet hair with a towel, and brush with a wide tooth comb. Once those knots are brushed out, leave it. Avoid blow drying and over brushing if at all possible. If you must blow dry or even straighten your hair, ensure you protect your hair with a heat defence product. Pureology Fortifying Heat Spray is a cruelty-free product that protects your hair from heat damage, without weighing it down. It’s light and natural, but still extremely effective.

Pampering Whether you pamper yourself or have regular salon visits, pampering your hair can work wonders for it’s overall look and feel. Regularly massaging your scalp can encourage hair growth, and regular trims can ensure we are ridding of split ends before they have a chance to spread. Using hair masks and regular conditioning treatments is also a great way to keep it healthy, just make sure you don’t use too much conditioner or it will end up dragging your hair down, causing it to look dull, rather than shiny. Alba Botanica offers a Hawaiian Deep Conditioning Minute Mask which promises to recover damaged hair. It’s a great product to use weekly to prevent damage hair too; prevention is always better than cure. Try to avoid using too many unnecessary hair products: volumising mousse and hairsprays can add to the damage by drying your hair out again, and overuse of serums can prevent your hair from creating it’s own natural oil. To achieve healthy, strong hair, that is easy to style because of it’s elasticity, free from split ends, naturally oily without being greasy and grows well, you can also ensure you eat a good balanced diet. Oily fish, such as salmon, vegetables such as avocados and cod liver oil supplements, as well as a good blend of calcium and fats, such as cheese, will allow your hair to remain long, sleek and beautiful.

Breastfeeding Problems Breastfeeding is supposed to be one of the most natural things in the world. However, sometimes it can become painful for the Mother. This can lead to feelings of sadness, uselessness and even depression; why should something so natural be so hard? Despite it being a natural thing to do, breastfeeding is still something that needs to be learned, by both Mum and baby. Babies naturally know how to suck to feed, however their suck is so intense and so strong that if they are not latched on properly, it can cause pain and discomfort. If these pains are ignored, further problems can occur, leaving Mum in even more pain. When latching your baby on for a feed, baby should open his/her mouth wide and take in the whole of the nipple and some of the areola too. When baby begins to suck it can feel intense, but it shouldn’t feel painful. If it feels painful, try to detach baby by slipping a clean finger into his/ her mouth and taking baby away. Then try again. It’s a good idea to try to start a feed when Mother and baby are both calm. Once baby becomes extremely hungry, they will naturally fuss more at the breast, making it harder to get a good latch. This can frustrate the Mother, which baby will pick up on and it quickly becomes a viscous circle, rarely leading to a pain-free, successful feed. Flattened, white or wedged nipples after a feed, suggest baby has not properly been latched on. Thankfully, help is at hand for breastfeeding, with lots of centres offering breastfeeding support. There are groups, phone numbers or drop in centres available, and generally, regular appointments on offer. Getting support as early as possible will help your success rate, and prevent problems with cracked nipples or affecting your milk supply. The most common reason women stop breastfeeding is due to sore or cracked nipples. Sore breasts and nipples are common three to seven days into breastfeeding as your milk comes in and they often feel extra sensitive. You may feel let down pains at the beginning of a feed, but this is very different to nipple pain and passes as the feed progresses. If you find yourself tempted to stop feeding because of sore or cracked nipples, seek help as soon as possible and try to continue feeding in the meantime. Ensure you have a good nipple cream, breast pads, and a supportive maternity bra without underwire. Advice is conflicting on nipple shields or guards, but they may get you through a tough time whilst you wait for a professional to observe your feeding technique. If you feel you are unable to continue to breastfeed while waiting for help, try to express, either by hand or with a pump, to keep your milk supply up. It’s amazing how guidance from a professional can help you and it’d be a shame to stop when you are capable and willing and help is at hand.

BTL Investors are Poised as Property Prices Start to Fall The news few of us were expecting, until the EU referendum result at least, is that house prices are starting to fall. This will come as music to the ears of prospective buy-to-let property investors, who could see the stamp duty surcharge on second homes wiped out by falling prices.

“If you’re thinking of making a buy-to-let property investment, now looks to be the perfect time to invest”

Timing plays an extremely important part of the process when making a buy-to-let investment. Over the last few years property prices and rental costs have been heading only one way, and that’s up. But now, while the cost of renting across the UK is still on the rise, property prices are starting to fall. The result is potentially the perfect climate for buy-to-let investors. The power is in your hands When it comes to making a property investment, as well as keeping one eye on property prices, it is also well worth doing your research to find out what other potential buyers are thinking. During quieter periods in the market, the reduced number of buyers gives those who are prepared to part with their cash more bargaining power, particularly with sellers who are looking for a quick sale. This time of the year, November to January, is typically one period when buyer numbers are down, as people are generally more focused on making it through the Christmas period and staying warm. This reduced buyer activity can make it an excellent time for buyers to act. The Christmas lull Evidence of the traditional Christmas lull can be seen in the latest house price data from Rightmove. This shows that the asking price of properties that are new to the market has fallen by an average of 1.1 percent, equal to £3,452 over the last month. Although the price fall is less than the typical 1.8 percent reduction usually recorded at this time of year, the decline shows that it is currently very much a buyers’ market.

2 million more properties are needed in the short-term Rightmove’s housing market analyst, Miles Shipside, pointed out that there is still a severe shortage of homes. To solve this shortage, he says that around 2 million extra homes need to be built in the short-term, but he concedes that is not going to happen. Instead, he says the government must ensure the annual target of building 230,000 new homes is met, and this should include more affordable options. The significance of the shortage of affordable properties for prospective buy-to-let landlords is that rental demand is not going to fall anytime soon. In fact, rental prices are forecast to rise by 19 percent over the next five years, while house prices will rise by just 13 percent over the same period. So, for buy-to-let investors looking to expand their portfolios, early 2017 looks like an excellent time to buy! Act now If you’re thinking of making a buy-to-let property investment, now looks to be the perfect time to invest. House prices are falling, activity in the market is down and rental demand is up. How To Make More ‘Me’ Time In 2017 Whether you’re a mother, socialite, high flying career woman, or a blend of all of the above, sometimes, we need some down time. Time to relax, and do something for ourselves, instead of to please others. But how can we ensure we are having adequate time for ourselves in today’s busy, bustling life? Apparently, our generation live an enviable life, with women being able to sport a successful career, alongside having a family. I’m a prime example of this; when my baby was less than 24 hours old, I was working again. I’m not complaining, I love my life, but rewind back a couple of generations and ladies would still be in hospital recovering from childbirth in that situation. Life, although rewarding, is also more challenging for women nowadays. We are expected to still wear the housewife hat: cooking, cleaning, childbearing and mother, as well as bringing home the bacon and excelling in our careers. It is wonderful that we have these opportunities, and I think most women enjoy what they do, but it can make it hard to leave time to do something for yourself. You’re always at the bottom of your list of priorities, because you can wait. A screaming 2 year old or a gas bill can’t. Depriving ourselves of ‘me’ time, isn’t healthy for anyone. Often, we can become snappy, stressed and unhappy in our lives because it feels like an endless cycle of chores, work and other people needing you. Take 30 minutes out of your day for a relaxing bubble bath and you will instantly feel your tensions melt away, and you’ll feel refreshed and energised to take on a new day. You often hear people say how a bath with the door shut becomes the equivalent of a day at the spa; allow yourself that luxury. It’s important to make yourself a priority. You may have a list as long as your arm of things to do, but if you put the ironing off for another day, is it really going to hurt anyone? Try making a schedule for your week, or day, and putting time aside within that schedule for you to do something for you. It’s important to not look at this as wasting time, but to look at it instead as pushing the refresh button on yourself. Don’t always put yourself to the bottom of your list; paint your nails and allow yourself to enjoy the luxury. I appreciate some days are more stressful than others, and to take time out to go to a 45 minute gym class, plus travel and get ready time, just isn’t feasible every day. However, sometimes small things are all you need. Why not take a 10 minute break at work, grab a coffee and a magazine and again, enjoy your time? Sometimes we feel guilty for having time for ourselves and waste that time with negative feelings; embrace it, enjoy it and get back to the tasks in need after your allocated slot.

Stay Safe During Winter Training January often shows an increase in fitness goals and physical activity. It’s important that we know how to keep ourselves safe during the Winter months when training though, to protect you and other road users. Group workouts, such as boot camps, football and netball matches, are a great choice for working out, because you are safe in a group, and more often than not your trainer will find a well lit court or field for you to continue training, meaning nothing has to change. However, if you’re a keen runner, it is a good idea to take precautions to keep yourself safe throughout these darker nights. The most important thing to bear in mind when running in the dark is to ensure you are visible to others, whether road users or other runners. You also need to remain attentive and alert.

Lights Wearing a light is also a great idea, ensuring that you can see where you are going. This can help to avoid trips and falls on uneven ground. If you like to be hands-free, why not invest in a head torch to light the way.

Clothing Reflective clothing is a great starting point to make you more visible. Bright colours and reflective clothing means you will catch the eye of road users, making an accident less likely. You can also purchase reflective and high visibility accessories, such as straps, vests, and even reflective trainers. Flashing lights are another option, with many being available on the market to clip onto your laces or clothing. Check In Ensure someone knows that you are going out running and let them know your route. If you have to divert, let them know. Don’t take unnecessary risks by choosing to run through dark woods or parks if you can avoid it. The busier the area, the safer you will be. It’s also worth carrying your identity on you somewhere, with emergency contact details. If you do suffer a fall and you’re unable to communicate, you want the people who find you to be able to contact someone for you.

Be Alert As motivational as running with music is, it’s best to avoid wearing headphones when running in the dark. Your vision is already limited, so you don’t want to rid of another sense. Your hearing is vital to your safety in the dark, often you can hear people and cars approaching before you can see them. If you struggle to run without music, you could always play music on your phone loud enough for you to hear it, without it being a huge distraction.

Get A Buddy Running with a friend or in a small group is always a great way to ensure you are safe. Not only does it make you twice as visible, it also means that you have someone with you in the event of an emergency. If you don’t have a friend who runs, why not join your local jogging or running club? There are lots of options for keeping fit in Winter. Stay safe when out and about, or if that doesn’t work for you, change your running times to mornings or lunchtimes instead. If all else fails, there is always that trusted treadmill waiting at your local gym, or virtual gym training sessions.

Power Flushing POWER FLUSHING, JET FLUSHING & HARD FLUSHING are all expressions used (in the heating trade over many years) to denote the process by which heating systems are forcibly cleansed using water at high velocity, but low pressure, so that no physical damage is caused to the system. The process can be made even more effective with the addition of powerful cleansing and mobilising agents such as FX2 and HYPER-FLUSH, from Kamco. The objective is to restore systems with circulation and boiler noise problems (caused by sludge and corrosion deposits) to optimum operation. Power flushing removes these deposits and the problems that they cause. Power flushing, in conjunction with SYSTEM PRE-CLEAN, is also an excellent way to precommission clean new heating systems, to remove excess flux, swarf and other debris, and the grease and oil used to prevent rusting of components before use. It is prudent to power flush a heating system immediately before fitting a new boiler to an existing system to prevent possible future problems. Many systems are found to contain corrosion and sludge, even if no flow problems have yet shown themselves. Existing debris is often mobilised by alterations to the system/piping and the increased efficiency of the new boiler, and may then accumulate in the boiler heat exchanger, causing noisy operation, reduced efficiency and, in extreme circumstances, failure of the boiler. The high efficiency and compactness of modern boilers, developed to minimise fuel costs and pollution, means that they are more susceptible to problems caused by debris in the system water. CLEARFLOWÂŽ POWER FLUSHING The CLEARFLOW power flushing process is a versatile, easy to use and highly effective method of flushing heating systems. By utilising CLEARFLOW system flushing pumps, heating systems can be purged of sludge, scale and corrosion deposits with minimal dismantling and disruption. HOW DOES IT WORK? The CLEARFLOW power flushing pump is simply connected into the heating system, either across standard circulator pump couplings, across the tails of one radiator, or wherever most practicable. The powerful flow, combined with instantaneous flow reverser device, will dislodge and mobilise deposits and corrosion which resist traditional system cleaning methods. Once the corrosion and sludge deposits have been loosened and mobilised, fresh clean water is forced through the heating system, pushing the contaminated water out through a full bore dump valve to waste. During the CLEARFLOW process, radiators are individually flushed, without removing or disconnecting them from the system, by directing the full output of the pump through each radiator separately. At the end of the flushing process, the system contains fresh clean water and reinstatement of the system to normal operation takes only a few minutes. System flushing will not remedy design or mechanical faults, which should be rectified, but in many cases it will cure the problems caused by these.

Improve Your Willpower Diet starts tomorrow is a popular phrase, yet for many, tomorrow never comes. People have many plans and hopes, but when reality hits, they struggle to stick with the ready made plans and are left feeling disheartened and disappointed time and time again. So where are they going wrong and why don’t some people have any willpower? One of the most important factors when making a plan, for example a diet plan, is to focus on why you’re doing it. Are you unhappy with the way you look and want to lose weight for a holiday or outing? Do you want to be more healthy or fitter? Perhaps you want to be a good role model for your children? There are many reasons why different people strive towards the same or similar goals. You need to find the reason for you to help keep you motivated and driven. If you feel you are making sacrifices and don’t really know why, it’s going to be harder to keep going. If you keep your mind focused on what you’re going to achieve and how good that’s going to make you feel, you’ll be excited about the destination. A specific goal is important too. You need to break your journey down into bite sized chunks. If you say to yourself: ‘I need to lose 2 stone and tone up’ then you have no deadline, no small goals on the way and no plan as to how you are going to achieve this. It can seem daunting and unachievable. Perhaps focus on improving your diet and increasing your exercise gradually as a starting point. This action plan will lead to you losing weight and toning up. Perhaps aim to lose 7lbs within 3 weeks, for example, with a reward for your achievements to keep you going, such as a new item of clothing. The journey also needs to be desirable. So you don’t like going to the gym, how about taking a dip in the swimming pool? You don’t want to go without pizza, how about a home made option instead of takeaway. You don’t need to deprive yourself, you just need to take control and drive yourself to where you want to be. You are the only person who can get you there. Being busy, tired and simply not bothered isn’t an excuse enough to jeopardise a happy and successful life. Willpower is all about self control. Temptation is all around us. If we practice self control and teach ourselves to resist temptation then we will reap the benefits in every area of our lives. People with high levels of self control, typically, have higher exam results, higher self esteem, binge less and have better relationship skills. Willpower can be practised and taught. By using the above methods to keep your mind focused, you can and you will get to where you want to be. Once you see success with the use of willpower, you will find it easier to focus next time.

Why ‘I’m Too Old To Start Exercising’ Isn’t A Valid Excuse... When we are young and it seems being fit is effortless, we don’t need to worry about gym visits and pumping iron. We carelessly run around the playground, climbing everything in sight, kicking a ball for fun not for vanity or health reasons. As we get older, we become more aware of our health and we may take up a sport or join a gym, partly as enjoyment, partly as a conscious health decision. And then life starts to get in the way. We’re too tired or too busy. We can’t get childcare. We have to work late. Excuses are easy to come by, and this lack of time is an easy get out.

As we get older, children grow, we retire or reduce our working hours and our social circle quietens down, we lose the excuse of lack of time. But now we’re too old, aren’t we? No, actually we’re not. We can’t change the past, but we can change our future, so if you’ve always fancied being a runner, but never given it a go, or want to join a sports team, then do it. Being too old is not an excuse, in fact, it’s now more important than ever that you exercise. You can still reap all of the available benefits.

When we are young we have somewhere to be, something to do, and naturally we are more active in our younger days than in later life. Once we become less busy, and more sedentary, our bodies begin to age. We were built to move, and without partaking in regular exercise, we lose the ability: use it or lose it.

If you’re looking for a motivator, exercising at later stages of your life can prolong your life, prevent pain and injury, prevent stress, improve your mood, maintain your weight and keep you looking younger. So why not start now? Whatever your fitness level or ability, there is something you can do to improve yourself, to look after your body. The sooner you begin to exercise, the better. That doesn’t mean it’s too late for you at 50, 70 or even 90, it just means start

now, not tomorrow. Great options for older beginners includes walking, swimming, Pilates, bowls, golf or yoga. They are low intensity workouts, so are a great way to build your strength and stamina without putting pressure on your muscles and joints. You could also invest in some free weights, and even if you are unable to stand or walk, you can exercise in your chair, building up to standing or moving when you are more able. By exercising regularly, the recommended guideline being 150 minutes per week, (30 minutes 5 times per week, ideally), you may find that you no longer need your medication to control your blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes. Your body will wake up and start functioning at a more optimum level. If you don’t take medication yet, even better: prevention is always better than cure.

Look after yourself today!

Bringing sparkle to Crowthorne! Trailblazing jewellery boutique to bring the sparkle of London’s Bond Street to the Home Counties, Taylor & Co Master Goldsmiths is welcoming customers to its newly relaunched concept boutique in Crowthorne, Royal Berkshire, to discover fine jewellery and silverware by world-renowned designers. A well-established independent jewellery business in Crowthorne, Royal Berkshire has relaunched with a unique retail concept that offers customers access to the UK’s most in-demand goldsmiths, silversmiths and jewellery designers. Taylor & Co Master Goldsmiths operates on a trailblazing model that allows highly qualified goldsmiths, silversmiths and designers to be more actively involved in the sale of their pieces. This will incorporate dedicated ‘Designer Days’, whereby customers can meet any of the featured artisans to discuss bespoke commissions, including silverware, fine diamond jewellery and bridal jewellery. This first-of-its-kind high street concept also offers these skilled craftspeople a fairer share of the profits from the sale of their work; ensuring individuals are rewarded for their quality and craftsmanship. Taylor & Co founder Mike Taylor is an experienced professional goldsmith and freeman of London’s prestigious Goldsmiths Company. He has owned his boutique on Dukes Ride, Crowthorne, since 1989 and is admired locally for providing exceptional jewellery restoration and bespoke jewellery design work from his busy on-site workshop. “In the wake of the internet and the ability we all have to shop at the click of a button, I believe it is my duty to transform my boutique into a forward-thinking destination for luxury jewellery and silverware on the high street,” explains Taylor & Co founder, Mike Taylor. “I am passionate about high-quality craftsmanship, but I don’t think customers should have to travel to London to find it. Taylor & Co Master Goldsmiths gathers some of the best examples of technical expertise and beautiful design in one place, allowing customers to shop in comfort and perhaps commission their own designs to treasure forever.” Taylor & Co Master Goldsmiths has secured key British brands and designers for its new concept boutique, including the illustrious House of Benney that boasts three royal warrants and was the subject of a BBC documentary earlier this year. The British designer silverware and jewellery brand is available in no other retail establishment, making Taylor & Co its only global partner. The boutique will also showcase designs by master goldsmith and diamond-mounter, Paul Draper, who is a fellow of the prestigious Institute of Professional Goldsmiths. His pieces are described as edgy, distinctive and one-of-a-kind. Taylor comments: “We pride ourselves on bringing a ‘Bond Street experience’ to the Home Counties. I decided to rename my business Taylor & Co to really highlight the company we keep, the master craftspeople we associate ourselves with and the wonderful, experienced designers that our customers will have access to.”

Are You Addicted To Being Busy? In this ever-moving, fast-paced, modern world, it’s not uncommon to hear people say ‘I don’t have time to relax.’ We’re so used to being busy that we become addicted to constantly being on the go and feel unnerved at the thought of a free evening or lunch hour. With social networking at an all time high, we get to see our friends every exciting moment. Nobody shouts out about sitting in front of the TV with a herbal tea, and subconsciously that can pressurise people to go out more to try to keep up. We’re constantly competing with others’ show reel highlights and we become scared of missing out on the action or seeming boring. Then there’s social media and modern technology. You’ve got 5 minutes whilst you’re waiting for the toaster. You could take a moment to breathe and look out the window, but instead you’re checking your emails or Twitter account to see where you’re going next. Often the first thing people do, before getting out of bed and last thing before getting into bed, is to check their phone. We’re losing the ability to switch off. It feels unnatural to just stop and do nothing, and as a result our relationships and our health are often suffering. We need to stop. We need to listen and reconnect with ourselves. Lack of sleep, rest and down time can be detrimental to our health. What good is it working every hour God sends if you’re not going to be well enough to drive that new car or if you’re never home to enjoy your big house? Sometimes, having a night off to do something relaxing is a benefit for you, not a waste of time. When we’re rushing from one destination to another, physically or mentally, our bodies are put under undue stress. Without rest periods, our blood pressure can increase, fat stores increase, posture deteriorates and our quality of life will eventually be affected. We breathe less deeply when we are stressed, decreasing our lung capacity and our stamina levels. All of this can leave us feeling exhausted, unwell and unhappy. Like all addictions, this can be overcome. The first step is to realise that there is a problem. Yes, life is fast and busy, but that doesn’t mean you can go on in your robotic style endlessly. After all, we’re humans, not computers. Even you need to recharge your batteries once in a while. Instead of rushing from one place to another, allow yourself to enjoy the journey: notice the sounds, smells and sights around you. Enjoy them, and remember how to live. Focus on your breath and take time to notice how your body feels. Are you holding tensions? Are you able to relax? Reconnecting with your breath will help you to rid of aches and pains, awareness of your posture can prevent back pain and headaches. You may regain your youthful glow, your face will soften, preventing wrinkles and you’ll remember how to feel again.
