DYNAMIC MOVEMENT SKILLS WHO/WHAT IS IT FOR?

• Anyone who needs to run or move better (runners, footballers, badminton, tennis etc) • Anyone with ongoing niggly injuries that keep reappearing • Those with strokes or neurological issues. (being able to stand safely would be useful) • Children/teens with Dyspraxia diagnoses (that may not be entirely accurate) Dynamic Movement Skills re-educates movement patterns interrupted after injury or surgery, by stimulating neuropathways and proprioceptive systems to change inefficient/ compensating movement patterns into more functional efficient movement. The system also improves gross motor skills, balance, rhythm, coordination, speed and agility. This will ultimately improve functional movement during rehabilitation, running and sport. IN LAYMANS TERMS So you’re injured…..you / your nervous system knows certain movements are going to be painful, so it (and you) move differently. So what happens when the injury is improving, but you’re still moving badly? You’re stuck in the altered movement state, and we need to re-start the original program/s of movement. The good news is…. your nervous system is a very fast learner, if prompted in the right way. ASSESSMENT I will carry out a “Functional Movement Analysis” and may also look at how you walk and run on a treadmill – “Gait Analysis”. From there we can formulate a plan for you to “move better”. IS IT EXPENSIVE? No more expensive than Physiotherapy or Personal Training. HOW QUICKLY DOES IT WORK? In reality you’ll need 8-12 weeks to start to re-wire your nervous system, but early improvements can be seen within 2-3 weeks when combined with some manual therapy or treatment from me. MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF “DMS” • I no longer suffer with an achy back in the morning. • My Physiotherapy clients find the moves I give them far more real-world useful, and quite quick to work. • There is a test to see if you should be back running or doing what you do, before you go and try for yourself. My clients and I have found this test very reassuring and useful. • Some moves reminded me a little of Tai Chi, so I have since also become a Tai Chi for Health Instructor and teach classes in Bracknell. Who invented DMS? Mike Antoniades is a coach with 30+ years experience around the world. Football coach, speed coach, strength & conditioning coach and rehabilitation specialist. He has coached 1000’s of runners, footballers, triathletes, and track & field athletes. I have attended two courses with Mike: • Movement re-patterning for Rehabilitation (Dynamic Movement Skills) • Functional Biomechanics of Running (Gait Analysis)

How can Hypnotherapy help my anxiety? Anxiety is an issue that so many people struggle with these days and it is being talked about more and more in the media, giving it the attention it fully deserves, as it debilitates such a lot of people. When I was a child my mother used to talk about some people she might know and describe them by saying that ‘she used to struggle with her nerves’. Clearly it seemed to be an issue then too, but there just wasn’t the help available then. It was very much something that people had to learn to deal with on their own and some people coped and others didn’t. Hypnotherapists like me were few and far between and were often considered quacks. In fairness some of them might have been. There was little in the way of formalised training for hypnotherapists, unlike nowadays. Also with the advent of externally verified professional qualifications, professional registers and reviews etc. available to view on the internet, it has become much easier now to check out a therapist’s credentials in advance. Anyway, getting back to anxiety, there are so many things a professional Hypnotherapist can help with. My particular brand of Hypnotherapy is one where I combine Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques with Hypnotherapy. Those of you who have had experience of CBT as it is better known will recognise it as a valuable

approach to dealing with mental health issues and is the main therapeutic approach which is recommended by the NHS. It helps clients to address their negative patterns of thinking

(their ‘cognitions’) which often are unnecessary and invalid and replace them with more helpful

ones. The use of Hypnotherapy in conjunction with CBT allows the process to be speeded up somewhat, so you see positive results in a shorter space of time. When I see a new client for anxiety, I often find that at the root of the anxiety can be a negative experience that the client has experienced in the past. When that is the case, I can use another technique to help the client process that memory so that it no longer strikes fear and panic in them when they confront it again. This then will also lessen the anxiety they feel when approaching a similar situation in the future. Then I teach them coping skills such as relaxation to manage their episodes of anxiety whilst helping them to change their thinking patterns. I find that this hybrid approach works incredibly well, and I am so pleased when I see my clients doing things that they could only have dreamed of a few weeks earlier. I have fairly recently started to ask them to write a review which they are more than happy to do and you can read these on my Testimonials page on my website. Some of the stories are truly inspirational.

Foundation’s top tips for making good exercise habits Learning to build good habits is not about how quickly you can master them. It’s about how good you are at maintaining them. In a world where everything is just a click away, you’re used to things happening quickly. And, of course, your goals are no exception. You want that healthy lifestyle and you want it right now. So when you start to find yourself struggling to keep your gym visits up, you become discouraged and frustrated. You might even give up… Here’s Foundation’s top tips for forming and maintaining a healthy gym habit: 1. Start Slowly Slow and steady wins the race, so ease your way into new habits. Although it can be tempting to dive right into it, it’s recommended that you start slowly then build up. Your goal, at this point, is to establish the habit behaviour. You want to start by fitting your new habit into your routine. Instead of doing 100 push-ups each day, begin with 10. Smaller actions require less thought, which requires less effort. Once these actions become consistent, then they’ll start to feel more natural. Soon, they’ll become a regular part of your daily routine. 2. Be Clear Approach your new habits with absolute clarity and determination. To increase your chances of following through with your new habits, you must clearly state where and when they’ll take place. So make a plan and write it down!

3. Reward Yourself Be proud of your achievements. Not only is celebrating your progress crucial for your motivation, it makes you feel good too. Those empowering feelings of achievement and pride will inspire you to take more action and create even bigger successes. Make it a priority to feel good about yourself. Every step, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction. 4. Eliminate Obstacles Make the process easier for yourself. If one of your goals is to eat healthier, keeping a bar of chocolate in the fridge will only undermine your efforts. When you eliminate the obstacles, you’re more likely to maintain your new habits. This will help to, ultimately, change your environment and increase your chances of success. 5. Enlist a Gym Buddy(ies) Good habits are behavioural traits, and the people around you can have a powerful impact on your behaviour. If you’re inspired to pursue your dreams and visions, expand your social circle to those who also share your same drive and ambition to succeed. 6. Commit Yourself Make a commitment to your new habits. For instance, hurrying home after a long and stressful day at work can be very enticing – rather than going to the gym, like you’d initially planned. But if you’d promised your gym buddy

Article by Foundation

that you’d meet up, then it makes it harder to decline. By committing yourself to your new habits, it holds you accountable for your decisions, providing you with an extra push when things get difficult. 7. Think Long Term Short-term fixes, such as 7-day cleanses or 21-day challenges, are meant to produce fast results – but they’re not sustainable. So how long does it take to form good habits? As long as it takes. The key is to create lasting change, and this can be done by having “short-term tasks” and “long-term targets”. Your targets are the bigger goals and dreams that you want to accomplish, while your tasks are the daily activities that you complete in order to make your goals a reality. 8. Make It Personal Above all, this is about you. In every moment, you need to believe that your new habits are part of your identity. If you’re finding it hard to maintain good habits, don’t be discouraged. By strategically shifting your mindset, you can begin to put yourself in the right direction – and make those habits stick!

What will 2020 bring for the housing market? Many people involved in the housing market were probably rather pleased to see the back of 2019.

With the news regularly conveying its messages of doom and gloom about the economy and the state of the political world, there was an understandable level of uncertainty in the housing market which translated into a continued decline in prices and many houses simply not selling. Crowthorne was certainly not immune to that uncertainty and lack of momentum, and yet we here at Michael Hardy Crowthorne, ended up with 2019 being our most successful year ever (so far!). We sold more properties in the RG45 area than any other estate agent, and in fact more than we had ever sold in any previous year. We also sold a higher percentage of the properties that we listed than any of our competitors* So, whilst 2019 was a great year for us, and for the vendors who successfully sold through us, 2020 has started with an even bigger bang! It feels as

though the property market has woken up to the new year with a much greater sense of optimism. Buyers are out in force and an apparent rise in confidence has already translated into us getting lots of properties under offer in the first few weeks of the year.

With all that in mind, we are extremely hopeful that 2020 will continue to see the property market in Crowthorne and the surrounding areas moving positively.

It is generally the case that our own little corner of the world here in Crowthorne follows suit with what is happening in the London market, with the ripple effect of events in the central London property market eventually reaching us here. According to a London data firm, LonRes , the last quarter of 2019 saw a marked increase in property transactions, particularly directly following the General Election. Prime London transactions apparently saw an increase of 34% year on year in that quarter, and the high value London sector (in excess of ÂŁ5,000,000) saw a quarter 4 year on year increase of 78%.

But we need properties to sell! If you are considering a move, whether now or in the future, and would like an up to date valuation of your home, please do contact us on 01344 779999 and we will be delighted to help. *Based on Rightmove data 01/01/2019 – 31/12/2019

Oak Tree Day Nursery From award-winning environmental initiatives to ethically sourced home-cooked meals and snacks, Oak Tree Day Nursery in Finchampstead is committed to giving children the best possible start in life.

For the highly-trained, three times Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ team at the Nine Mile Ride setting, each child from six weeks to nearly five years is unique, and this individuality is actively celebrated. At the setting, children can enjoy ageappropriate and imaginative indoor play and learning spaces, state of the art ICT, toys and equipment, messy play corners and ‘role play’ areas and focused classes to enhance learning. In the nature garden outside, children are encouraged to immerse themselves in activities such as vegetable planting and picking and insect observations, for which they have gained a ‘Bronze’ award as part of the internationally recognised Eco-Schools scheme. The award is given for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation efforts; which for the pre-schoolers includes crafting with natural and recycled

materials and creating habitats for wildlife. “We fully recognise the positive impact that being outdoors has on a child’s social, physical and emotional development. Respecting and caring for the planet is an important lesson which we believe will stand the children in good stead for life”, said Nursery Manager, Debbie Williamson. A number of children and staff make up the Oak Tree ‘Eco-Committee’, who take a lead role in ensuring the rest of the nursery is environmentally considerate by taking steps such as turning off lights and taps and recycling where possible. The setting is accredited with the sought-after ‘Food for Life Served Here’ award, which acknowledges the use of ethically sourced ingredients; including the children’s home-grown produce, salt and sugar-free food and home cooked meals. The nursery also prides itself on being powered

by electricity from renewable sources and sending nearly zero waste to landfill. Strong partnerships with parents are highly valued at the setting, with regular training opportunities, including first aid courses and a comprehensive school readiness programme to prepare pre-schoolers for their next stages. Oak Tree Day Nursery was opened in 2002 and is part of the awardwinning, employee-owned Childbase Partnership which owns 43 day nurseries across England. The company was recently accredited with a ‘Princess Royal Training Award’ for their bespoke ‘Teach to Reach’ programme for colleagues, which is implemented throughout all settings and is based on the latest Early Years research and Childbase expertise; enabling nursery professionals to become outstanding teachers.

Enhancing your Eyes – Making the Most of Mascara If you’re short of time and need to add some life to your eyes, then mascara really can be your best friend. Instantly adding length and volume, mascara will enhance and define your eyes within minutes, giving a more wide-eyed and brighter appearance. Choosing the right one With so much choice available, finding the perfect mascara can be a bit daunting. Think about what’s most important to you and the effect that you’re looking to achieve? Volume, curl, length & definition or would a waterproof mascara work better with your lifestyle? Likewise, mascara wands come in a variety of shapes and sizes, designed to achieve different results depending on your requirements and preferences. Using the wand correctly will ensure that you achieve the best possible finish. Colour wise, black mascara is by far the most popular choice and the most effective for opening up the eyes. Very fair-skinned people can choose brown as an alternative for a very natural result.

Next, apply the mascara by placing the wand at the base of the lashline and sweeping through to the tips using a zigzag/ wiggling motion to separate, lengthen and define the lashes. Take care not to overload the wand with too much product as this will cause clumping. Use the tip of the wand to define the lower lashes. Apply additional coats of mascara to achieve the desired effect, ensuring that you don’t allow the first coat to dry before applying the next. Resist pumping the wand in and out of the tube as this will force air through and cause the product to dry out more quickly. Instead, simply reinsert the applicator wand, twist gently, remove and apply. Use a clean wand or spoolie to separate any lashes if required.

Preparation Before applying your mascara (or eye makeup, if applying a full makeup) ensure that your lashes are absolutley clean. Application Step one, is to curl your lashes with a lash curler. It really does make an instant difference, the mascara is easier to apply and your lashes will appear longer. Place the curler as close to the base of your lashes as possible, gently squeeze them closed and hold for a few seconds. Repeat this step a few times until you are happy with the finished look.

Soft Glam Makeup on our Model using Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes Mascara

Article by Christiane

Correcting mistakes Remove any smudges gently with a dry cotton Q-Tip. Remember to remove your makeup every night Don’t understimate the importance of meticulously removing all traces of makeup every night. Eyes in particular are very sensitive and need careful attention to avoid any irritation or sensitivity. Hygiene Hygiene with makeup is incredibly important and even more so with products which come into close contact with your eyes. To avoid bacteria build up and reduce the risk of eye infections, replace your mascara at least every 6 months and never share your mascara wand with anyone. Favourite Brands For a high end brand, among our favourite mascaras are Legendary Lashes from Charlotte Tilbury - long-wearing, smudge-proof and humidityresistant and retailing at £25 and NARS Climax Mascara for buildable volume at £21. For a great value High Street alternative, try Maybelline Great Lash or Lash Sensational Mascara, which currently retail at £5.99 and £8.99 respectively in stores like Boots and Superdrug.

How to make the best of garden lighting? Despite us being well into the dark Winter months, still with good lighting, your garden can be enjoyed. The best garden lighting will do more than just offer a practical solution; get it right and your garden can look magical as dusk falls. While some outdoor lighting can be harsh and unnatural, here we look at how it can enhance your garden, adding beauty, warmth and atmosphere. The effects will be completely different during the four seasons, and lighting should be capable of being adjusted to suit. Have fun with your outdoor lighting: Lighting should be fun and flexible. Have lights in the garden that can be adapted for different occasions and events during the year. For most of the year a warm subtle lighting scheme works well and suits most people, but what about changing it for special occasions like Christmas, Halloween or a garden party? Consider a mix of green and red lights for Christmas and a spooky arrangement of red and orange for Halloween. Also consider colour and shade. Crisp white lights are classic and elegant. Warmer whites and orange hues are warming, and their glow will create a cosy atmosphere. Blue shades, on the other hand, will make outdoor spaces look modern and cool. Greens tend to make green foliage look more vibrant and bring it to life. An eclectic mix of colours will add charm and fun. Whatever colours you choose, it is best to keep the lights soft for a cosy and warming atmosphere

Also, don’t be afraid to mixand-match and add variety to your lighting. So, put your own personal style into it and give your garden lighting some character. All gardens are different and require different lighting. There is no right or wrong way.

Do you want the lighting to look good during the day or just come to life after dark? Or both? Some lights look great from a design point of view utilising modern and traditional designs so they can be a feature in your garden. Other lights will blend into the background

and go quietly about their job at night fall. If you are trying to highlight a garden feature it would be better not to see the light fitting, but the light on the feature for example. You may want some post lights along a pathway, therefore something that looks great during the day will work well. Obviously, it needs to light the pathway at night as well. Where to position your outdoor lighting? As well as thinking about the various lighting options available, it’s important to consider where to place outdoor lighting too. For instance, if your house has good views over your garden, then you can enjoy looking out onto it on winter evenings, so position your lighting to show it off well. Not only will it be a nice backdrop to look out upon, but a well-lit garden can make your indoor space feel bigger too. Spotlights are great for general border, shrub and tree lighting. You can arrange the lighting differently to create different effects; light from the front

71 so you can see the item illuminated in full, from the side gives a different view and from behind gives a less harsh, but stunning halo effect. The options really are endless. Security Lighting your outside spaces is not only going to make your garden or driveway look great all year round, but also adds an extra level of security to your home. Some wild claims have been made over the years that you must have outdoor lighting as it will prevent you from being visited by a robber wearing a black and white striped top and carrying a swag bag. The reality is sadly, that a lot of crimes to the home happen during daylight hours. But outdoor lighting does help,

and it is a deterrent. It will also help if you have your own CCTV cameras as they are not always great at night. Cheaper and easier than you think. There are many outdoor lights on the market, it is flooded with them. Mains voltage (240v) versions required a qualified electrician to come and fit them for you. They may need to run steel wire armoured cable around the garden and lots of weatherproof junction boxes. This can be very expensive and not very flexible for future additions or changes. Let’s be honest the garden will grow and mature over the years and it would be great to know that your garden lights will do the same. Since the evolution of LED

bulbs, 12 volt garden lighting systems produce the same light output as the 240v mains versions, but have the added benefits that they are a DIY install, safe for children and pets, very flexible for the future and cheaper as you do not need to employ a tradesman to install them. Here at the Gardenlightshop. com we have been selling the brilliant Techmar 12v plug and play garden lighting system for 10 years. We are Camberley based and have a showroom so you can view the lights working and how easy it is to install. We can even help you with the design and planning of the system. Starter kits from ÂŁ75. Lash Facts Here are some interesting ‘lash facts’! The average person has 90-120 natural lashes per eye. Each eye can shed between 2-3 lashes a day! 1 week = 21 lashes 2 weeks = 42 lashes 3 weeks = 63 lashes Lash fills should be done every 2-3 weeks to keep your lashes looking full & beautiful What is a lash lift? A lash lift is a treatment performed on the natural lashes to enhance thickness and length. No extensions are used, and no maintenance required. The best part, it lasts 6-8 weeks!

The Importance of Patch Testing A patch test is a small amount of product placed on the inside of your forearm and left for at least 24 to 48 hours and carried out to see if you are allergic or have a reaction to the product(s). Being new to the beauty industry, one of the most importance things that has been drilled into me is “Patch Test”, “patch test” PATCH TEST! It Is a given and must be carried out on all new clients and updated if any circumstance change. In the last few weeks I have been asked to carry out treatments on new clients without a patch test as long as they sign a disclaimer. Despite what you may have been told by other beauty therapists, disclaimers are not legally binding documents and

Articles by Lisa

insurances will not be valid even with a signed disclaimer. Ultimately, if the client has a reaction, I will be negligent due to poor practice, as I would have willingly carried out the treatment whilst knowing that I should have carried out a patch test. Not to mention the effect it will have on my new business reputation, all because I didn’t carry out a patch test that takes just minutes to complete. NOT WORTH THE RISK!
