GREETING The University of Ioannina has a long standing tradition in teaching the Greek language and culture for more than twenty years now. Teaching Greek as a second/foreign language is successfully carried out in the Center for the Study of the Hellenic Language and Culture (He.La.S.). In addition, our University hosts a modern Foreign Languages Centre (F.L.C.) that provides advanced foreign language education in response to the current demands in Higher Education for mobility, internationalisation, knowledge dissemination and intercultural communication. In this direction, He.La.S. organised for the second time, in cooperation with the F.L.C. in 2016, a Staff Training Week in the framework of the Erasmus+ Programme. The week aimed at providing training on teaching Greek and English as foreign languages to teaching staff of academic Institutions abroad. The Organising Committee, working hard and effectively, implemented the programme with great success, serving as an examplary model for similar actions in the future. Georgios D. Kapsalis Rector University of Ioannina

PREFACE Languages are a great passion! Anyone who has been involved in language teaching and learning could instantly identify with this concept. Driven by such a devotion to the promotion of excellence in language teaching in Tertiary Education, we decided to organise an Erasmus+ Staff Training Week on “Innovative foreign language teaching for specific purposes”. Our aim was to bring together key stakeholders from various academic institutions involved in the field of language learning and teaching, facilitate focused discussions on common topics of interest and promote international collaborations. The course combined a thorough review of the cutting-edge research in the field of foreign language teaching for specific, academic and professional purposes. Among the main issues of discussion, we analysed: foreign language policies, CLIL methodology in foreign language teaching, integrating new technologies in language classrooms and intercultural communicative language teaching. The theoretical sessions were interactive and complemented with participants’ reflective work, practical sessions and hands-onactivities. Based on our participants’ evaluations, we are convinced that they all became actively engaged with innovative foreign language teaching methodologies and practical learning activities, while, in parallel, enjoying our rich social programme and educational fieldtrips. It is hoped that this Staff Training Week will enhance our participants’ professional skills and contribute to the establishment of new networks for future collaboration.

INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING

“Intercultural language learning involves developing with learners an understanding of their own language(s) and culture(s) in relation to an additional language and culture. It is a dialogue that allows for reaching a common ground for negotiation to take place, and where variable points are recognised, mediated and accepted.” (Liddicoat et al, 2003:46)

TEACHING CLIL LESSONS “CLIL is the planned pedagogic integration of contextualized content, cognition, communication and culture into teaching and learning practice.” (Coyle et.al. 2010:6). “[We should not] be trapped inside a dichotomy between focus on form and focus on meaning but rather use the term focus on language…it becomes impossible to separate form and function neatly in the interactional work that is being carried out.” (van Lier, 1996:203)

INTEGRATING NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN LANGUAGE CLASSROOMS “ICT has a multimodal and vital role to play in CLIL, since it caters for the media and the resources that can enhance multidisciplinary learning, and provides the means that stimulate, guide and facilitate students in their effort to express themselves adequately and effectively in the target language.” (Vlachos, 2009) TELL (Technology Enhanced Language Learning) is seen as part of the environment in which language exists and is used.” (Walker and White, 2013:9)

DEVELOPING FOREIGN LANGUAGE POLICIES Bruen (2013:101) posits that “…in order to identify the policies to implement we must first have both a clear picture of where we currently stand and a vision for the future. Our understanding of our current position should relate to the actual use of languages (language ecology), attitudes towards languages (language ideology) and the prevailing socio-economic context”. “A language policy establishes the languages of instruction and of administration and communication as well as the aims and objectives of language programmes, language support measures [for students, lecturers/researchers and administrative staff] and the way in which these are put into practice within a particular HEI.” (Lauridsen, 2013:3)

“A successful programme for tertiary education presupposes previous success at the lower levels of education. (Fortanet-Gomez, 2013:22)

An integrated/holistic national FL education policy for all levels of education is required.

PARTICIPANTS’ TESTIMONIALS

“This was an excellent opportunity to experience training and culture in a highly pleasant environment and with my professional qualified colleagues from a variety of universities across the world. We will repeat the experience in the future.” Tanya Linaker, King’s College London

“Innovative foreign language teaching for specific purposes” training week was a great opportunity for language teachers to share knowledge and experience on the area of teaching language for specific purposes, using technology in language teaching and implementing language policy in higher education institutions. Also, we were lucky getting the best of the Greek hospitality by the hosts. Kostas Stylianou, Cyprus University of Technology

I would definitely recommend this experience to anybody who is interested in meeting colleagues in an international and intercultural environment. Our hosts, Dora and Alex were welcoming and warm and were able to let these days be as interesting as they were useful. Hope to meet you next year. Enrica Rossi, University of Urbino Carlo Bo

Τhe Erasmus training week was a fantastic experience both in the academic field and the personal. The participants were highly motivated and this made the exchange of ideas and experiences much richer and more interesting. Lefkada, as a venue, is a wonderful island, very beautiful and friendly, welcoming people. Our two professors, Dora and Alex, were wonderful, very open and friendly, informative and experts in their field. I would love to repeat this experience. Thank you very much. Vicki Baker, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona

This was my first Erasmus staff training week and I found it was an incredible experience at all levels. Dora and Alex are absolutely fantastic and knowledgeable and as example to all. I’m looking forward to having same experience on business and medical English next time. Teresa Escado, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona

The Erasmus+ Staff Training Week more than lived up to my expectations. The organisation was smooth and efficient throughout, and the Greek hosts were unfailingly helpful and supportive. The participants were able to exchange ideas and experiences on a wide range of issues. The excursions provided an additional intercultural dimension, and the week was informative, stimulating and academically and professionally rewarding. Angela Beverley-Gilbertson, Reutlingen University

During the training week, I met new and interesting people from different countries. I learned new things and methods for teaching foreign languages. The seminar was organised perfectly. Our teachers, Alex and Dora, were well trained, they read very interesting lectures and aroused the interest of all of us. The two trips during the week, as well as the evenings we spent with all participants at the workshop, helped us to create new friendships and to feel like we knew each other for a long time. The seminar was wonderful and it will remain an unforgettable experience for me. Tsvetana Mandzhukova, St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo

In Lefkada, I met colleagues form different countries and I learned a lot of about language teaching worldwide. During the teaching week we created new friendships and we had interesting excursions. Alex and Dora were wonderful. Their lectures were interesting. I would like to thank Alex, Dora, the Rector of the University of Ioannina Georgios Kapsalis, Apostolis and Vanya for their hospitality! Everything was at highly level and I would like to go to the seminar again. Velin Petrov, St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo

The training programme provided a wealth of relevant information on current issues in foreign language teaching. Both Dora and Alex share their research and professional experience which is very helpful to all, I believe. They gave their time and effort generously extending hospitality, kindness and thoughtfulness throughout the programme. Certainly we spent five days immersed in issues on foreign language teaching bathed in a total cultural experience that can only be described as absolutely overwhelming.
