INSIDE THE EFL JUNIORS 2018 Junior Boys Grand Finals

Phil Murton EFL Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to Grand Final Day for the EFL Junior Boys Season. This year saw a record 336 boys teams take the field. Of the 35 clubs who fielded a competitive junior boys team this year, all 35 had a team playing finals and 28 clubs have at least one team playing on grand final day, ensuring the thrill of playing in a grand final is spread far and wide across the east of Melbourne.

Apart from those on the field, there has been a huge contribution from coaches, team managers and club officials, along with the mums, dads and carers that support their children. As a parent of young boys this year coaching an under 9 team myself, I understand all too well the time and effort given by parents everywhere to help their kids be involved in sport. To all involved we say a big thank you and trust your experience in local EFL footy this year has been a positive one. As the season concludes it’s a time for reflection on where we are at and how we can improve. Numbers in our noncompetitive age groups remain at record highs with 125 teams entered in under 8, 9 and 10. Our Auskick under 7’s program, introduced to help bridge the gap between Auskick and club footy, continues to grow with over 40 teams participating across a few days/nights of Auskick grid games. The success of what we have introduced has seen it replicated elsewhere across the state. With the support of AFL Victoria, we are rolling out targeted programs in schools to help ensure Ausick numbers, the lifeblood of junior footy, remain strong. Teams numbers through competitive boys age groups have been relatively stagnant for the last few years, with different age groups ebbing and flowing on a year to year basis. Pleasingly we had an increase at under 17 level for the first time in a number of years. Four divisions, grading and final fives are hopefully creating the best possible playing environment and research is underway to identify further ways to improve the competition and assist with player recruitment and retention. Girls footy continued to grow this year with the Eastern Region Girls Competition expanding from 86 teams to 110 teams, 83 coming from EFL clubs. With a full suite of grades on offer now and multiple divisions in every age groups, there is somewhere for everyone to play. Next Sunday will be the culmination of another terrific season of girls footy with the Girls Grand Final Day.

Along with the players, it’s also an important day for the umpires who will be involved in the game. They train, attend lectures and are a part of a structured program that encourages them to be the best that they can be. Over the last three years we’ve had some wonderful young umpires come through the ranks, many debuting in senior footy this year. They too have reached a goal of their own and for that we offer them the league’s congratulations on their achievements and hope they continue with their umpiring into the future. As you watch the games this weekend, remember these are young men and women who, like your kids that are playing, are learning their craft also. Thank you also to the host clubs of our junior finals series. Hosting finals at independent venues is an important part of any competition and with a competition of our size, is a difficult task that could not be completed without the help and support of EFL clubs. The hospitality shown by host clubs this year has been excellent. As a competition we continually look to grow and evolve to make the game better for all involved. This year we removed percentage as a ladder tie-breaker, firstly to combat uneven fixtures, and secondly to remove the incentive for stronger teams to heavily defeat weaker teams. Additionally, we introduced the last possession rule, removing the need for volunteer boundary umpires and helping keep the game moving. And in finals, we adjusted interchange rules to ensure no player misses out. From the observations and feedback we’ve had during the year both changes have been positive. For season 2019 we are looking at range of measures to ensure the game day behaviour of all involved continues to improve. We are proud of the environment in which our games are played in but know we must continue to evolve and never be complacent. Like in all facets of life, there is room for improvement and as we have done in many other areas, the EFL wants to lead the industry in driving positive change. In closing I would like to acknowledge the work of the Junior Committee led by Chairman Leon Bailey. The committee is made up of Ian Singleton, Mark Pascoe, Phil Hermann and Bernard Fewster. They give wonderful service to the league, attending junior games every Sunday, liaising with clubs and ensuring the standards we are all so proud of continue to be upheld. Dyson Baker, the league’s Manager of Junior Operations, continues to do a great job administering the competition in a fair and just manner, as has Jessie Mulholland with the girls’ competitions. Good luck to all teams today and remember, whether a player, official or supporter, barrack hard and loud but and make sure you represent your club in a manner which does everyone proud.

ROOS LEARN AUSLAN By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree

M

ax Beasley has been playing his junior football with East Ringwood since 2015.

Teenaged Beasley, who spent three seasons playing with Baulkham Hills in the SJ Sydney Harbour league, now plays in the Roos’ under-14s and had long been faced with the challenge of communicating with teammates due to his deafness. In comes Gillian from ‘Auslan’ and her daughter Emma who is also deaf.

up and off he goes. “So really it was for the officials to be able to communicate and help teach him more about football and for the kids to be able to create more and better friendships, so they can have a platform to communicate on.” The evening was well-received and a wonderful night for the club. It was able to bring the team closer together and moving forward they are more confident in communication with Max. “We had a full team there plus parents and it was accepted well by all the boys,” Halit said. “By the end of it they were doing the full alphabet and sentences. It was actually utilised on the weekend, I was telling some of them to man up in sign language, so it was a bit of fun. “Everyone got involved and embraced it.”

Max (right) with Emma (middle) and a player (left) showing off their new Auslan skills. IMAGE: Kerryn Heath

Auslan is the sign language of the Australian deaf community. The term Auslan is an acronym of “Australian Sign Language”. Gillian was brought in by the club to hold a night of teaching the team and the junior Roos’ community Auslan. With Emma being deaf, Gillian sought to learn Auslan so that she would be able to communicate better with her daughter. East Ringwood Junior Football Club president Shaun Halit, also the team’s assistant coach and runner on game days, couldn’t speak more highly of the evening and of Max. “He is so involved with everyone and as a team, we all wanted to communicate better,” Halit said. “I’m the runner of the team as well, I would run out and do it by text with notes on my phone. I would say, man up on number 2 and he would give the thumbs

Gillian (left) teaching the President Shaun Halit and players. IMAGE: Kerryn Heath. www.efl.org.au

Max’s parents are also fully deaf which means for Max, they are his only point of communication, so for him to be able to open up and be involved in a night like this truly shows how important football and friends are to him. Halit is proud his club has been able to create a welcoming community for Max. “Max gives his heart and soul to the club but now to open this up to this group of kids and the smile on his (Max’s) face is just amazing,” Halit said. “To be able to have everyone saying something to him and his giggling at their sign language because he is working out he is working it out. “It was just a nice, respectful way of creating a communication platform. It’s just the basics and they can extend from there if they choose to.” By hosting an evening like this, the ERJFC is able to bring more awareness to their club about what they can do for Max or future players that are deaf as well. The exposure the Roos are creating is great for not only the Auslan community but local football clubs with children who are deaf and wanting to play sport. “Hopefully other clubs and deaf players throughout the EFL embraces this great initiative and unroll something similar in their own football clubs.” Halit said. 5

The Eastern Footballer - EFL Junior Finals 2018

COACH OF THE MONTH – JULY Auskick Coach – Daniel Jordanov (Ringwood Auskick) Daniel is the coach of the all-girls group at Ringwood. He is a current senior player who has committed to the development of the juniors at the club. He is a fantastic coach which has been evident in the massive improvement of the girls over the season. One of Daniel’s strengths is his ability to recognise each girl’s level of skill, select appropriate activities to allow fun and at times challenge them improve their skills Daniel demonstrates excellent preparation and communicates well with all parent helpers. Daniel has had a massive impact on Ringwood Auskick this year. With over 30 girls registered this season, it is a significant improvement on 2017. The Ringwood Football Club is extremely lucky to a senior player commit to a full season of Auskick. The parents are full of praise and continue to comment on the way Daniel has looked after the girls this year. As for our girls, it is obvious the girls enjoy his coaching.

Junior Coach – Brad Crossland (Croydon) Under-10 While Brad has a lifetime of football experience after several decades playing suburban football (he’s still playing super rules today), he has perfectly targeted the right mix of skill development, discipline and fun befitting under-10 level kids. Brad provides simple, clear, calm and consistent messages, and also gets the kids input (asks questions about the right/wrong way to go about things). This approach gets ‘buy in’ from the kids, and enabled them to quickly develop their skills and understanding of the game football without confusion from mixed messages. I don’t think he knows how to raise his voice. Brad regularly uses different activities and games that make skill development fun - this approach, which makes kids more engaged, has fast tracked the development of the simple skills such as tackling, shepherding, sharing the footy with teammates (regardless of ability).

Youth Coach – Kevin Tymensen (Norwood) Under-9 Kevin’s strong knowledge of the game and the rules within the game have enabled him to coach the children for now, and for the future. Kevin is very clear and I believe he shows respect for the players in the way he communicates with them. Rather than talk to them like children, he talks to them like footballers and they have developed a great understanding of the game under his coaching. He is consistent with his message and reinforces this through positive reinforcement, training and some repetition until the players have got the message. www.efl.org.au

Kevin is very focused on the skill development at training and focuses on key skill areas at training, and then supports the players to implement those skills during the game. This has been incredibly effective with all players developing well throughout the year.

Junior Coach – Rhonda McMillan (Wantirna South JFC) Under-12 Girls Rhonda was previously involved in the girls Auskick program and assisted the girls transition from Auskick to junior football and took on the under-12 girls team. Rhonda did a fantastic job to keep the team together when they only were getting two or three players to training. Instilled a belief in the girls that the team would get there and on the eve of round one they picked up the six to eight players needed to get a team up. Rhonda has drawn her excellent communication skills from her teaching background and has built good relationships with the girls.

Senior Coach – Brett Rowe (Ringwood) Brett has a distinguished playing career, drafted to Fitzroy and played majority of his football at Box Hill. He has had success as an assistant coach in a senior premiership for Ringwood in 2005. In 2018 in his role at Ringwood he has demonstrated a strong understanding of the game and has been able to mix his past experiences with modern day techniques. Brett’s communication is first class and he delivers his messages as more of a teacher than a coach. He has an open-door policy with everyone at the club and is extremely approachable. Brett has made our club mantra ‘the little things’. He is a big believer in doing the little things well and I think it’s a big part of why Ringwood are undefeated. He teaches skills through repetition and challenges the players to put themselves under pressure at training, so they are prepared for game days. Brett is universally loved at the club, from the players to the committee and everyone in between. He has made a strong focus on being ‘one club’ and shows everyone the same amount of respect which is why he gains so much back.

Senior Coach – John Hayhurst (The Basin) Women’s John has been involved in coaching for over 20 years and has successfully implemented modern coaching techniques as well as some traditional methods. John took on a playing group that only a handful of players having played before. John has excellent communication skills and has the strong ability to break down football and alter the message to best suit a player whether she is new to the game or an experienced player. Training has been excellent with each player showing improvement on their technique and skills. John is well-respected by all players, officials and opponents. 7

The Eastern Footballer - EFL Junior Finals 2018

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW – UNDER-11 UNDER-11A Third-placed East Ringwood Blue will be looking to make it two in a row over minor-premier Blackburn Black, after an 11-point victory in the second semi-final. Charlie Whitehead and Jack Larsen have each enjoyed stellar seasons in front of goal, booting 11 each from 16 and 15 games respectively – East Ringwood Blue will need to be wary of the dynamic duo. Meanwhile, the Roos are red-hot, having won their past seven matches, including two finals. Oliver McKenzie has proven hard to stop this season, kicking 22 goals from 14 matches.

UNDER-11B The Basin and Montrose Blue match-up for the first time since Round 14 of the home and away season; on that occasion it was Montrose Blue coming away with the victory by just six points. The Bears have had to take the long route to the big dance, after going down to Mooroolbark in the qualifying final before defeating Heathmont and exacting revenge on the Mustangs in last week’s preliminary final. Conversely, Montrose Blue have enjoyed the week off. Riley Mitchell has led the charge for The Basin this season, slotting 23 goals from 17 matches, while Mitchell Buckland has 32 for Montrose Blue, including six in a match in Round 13.

UNDER-11C Wantirna South and Donvale meet for the first time since Round 8 of the home and away season, with the Magpies recording a convincing 36-point victory. The Devils finished minor premiers while Donvale finished fourth on the ladder – the former enjoyed a week off at the start of the finals series and again last week after winning their way through to the grand final with a five-goal victory over Ferntree Gully in the second semi-final. Wantirna South is on a six-game winning-streak while Donvale has won three of its past five matches. Benjamin Cross and Ryan Morris have led the scoring this year for the Devils with nine and eight goals respectively, while Connor Poppes has had his kicking boots on this season for the Magpies.

UNDER-11D South Belgrave and North Ringwood Red met just two weeks ago in the second semi-final, with the South Belgrave Saints booking their spot in the grand final and earning a week off. North Ringwood Red did battle with Boronia in last week’s preliminary final to run out 14-point victors, with Oliver Goodwin kicking two crucial goals in a season which has so far registered 15 majors. The two sides also met at the start of July, with North Ringwood Red claiming the win by 17 points.

UNDER-11E Kilsyth and the Rowville Knights renew acquaintances after a thrilling second semi-final which saw the Cougars victorious by just four points. Kilsyth finished minor premiers with an undefeated record while the Knights placed second at the end of the home and away season with 12 wins and two losses – one of which to Kilsyth by 38 points in Round 8. Watch out for Jack Childs and Luke Ivanovic for the Cougars, with 20 and 26 goals respectively for the season, while Bailey Sanders has 34 majors for the Knights this season. www.efl.org.au

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW – UNDER-12 UNDER-12A Vermont Purple meet Mitcham for the second time in a fortnight after registering a 15-point win through to the big dance in the second semi-final. Vermont Purple finished minor premiers with just one loss for the season and hold a 2-1 advantage over the secondplaced Tigers this year; with their only loss coming by a solitary point in Round 1, before winning the pair’s next two clashes. Nathan Caughey and Cameron Zani have proven to be focal points up forward for Vermont Purple with 19 and 15 goals for the season, while Peter Costanzo and Hudson Goulding have enjoyed 20 and 14 goals respectively.

UNDER-12B Just three points separated Knox and Heathmont Blue in the pair’s last encounter in Round 10, with the Falcons taking the spoils of victory. Knox finished second on the home and away ladder while Heathmont Blue finished fourth. The Jets secured an unlikely victory over minor premiers The Basin Red in last week’s preliminary final, overcoming the inaccurate Bears (0.13) by just four points. After a week off, Knox will be feeling refreshed off the back of also accounting for The Basin Red in the second semi-final. The Falcons’ multi-pronged attack has caused many opposition headaches this season, with six players hitting double figures on the goals tally – Adrian D’Amico leading the charge with 19. Meanwhile, eight players have kicked over 10 goals in Heathmont Blue’s line-up – led by Jackson Mooney with 17.

UNDER-12C A seven-point victory went to Rowville two weeks ago when it met East Burwood in the second semi-final. The Hawks hold a 2-1 advantage over the Rams head to head this year, meeting twice during the home and away season with the Rams claiming victory in Round 1 before Rowville exacted revenge in Round 8. Rowville finished on top of the ladder to claim the minor premiership with 13 wins, while East Burwood finished in second with 11 wins. The Hawks boast a trio of goal-kicking firepower up forward with Mitchell Cestnik (43), Mitchell Gamel (29) and Jai Townsend (27), while the Rams’ Jonty Sinclair has led the way for his side with 24.

UNDER-12D A week off for the Waverley Blues after registering a 50-point win over today’s opponent Vermont Gold sees them as arguably the more rested side heading into the grand final. Very little has separated the two sides this season otherwise, each recording 11 wins for the season with the Blues finishing first and Vermont Gold second, with the margin in the pair’s only home and away meeting just 14 points, Waverley Blues’ way. Vermont Gold will be looking to build on the momentum gained from last week’s seven-point win over Coldstream in the preliminary final. Ryker Vandernol has booted 22 majors for Vermont Gold this season, while Jackson Adams has bagged 30 for the year. www.efl.org.au

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW – UNDER-13 UNDER-13A East Ringwood Blue and Blackburn Black match up again after meeting in the second semi-final, resulting in a 59-point win to the Roos. East Ringwood Blue finished first on the ladder while Blackburn Black finished in third. The two sides met on two occasions during the home and away season, in Round 6 and 13, with the Roos claiming victory in both encounters. Tristan Devers has been a standout for Blackburn Black this season with 25 goals to his name, including a bag of six in Round 12, while Riley Weatherill and Ryan Egan have booted 45 and 41 goals respectively for the Roos this year.

UNDER-13B Knox takes on the Waverley Blues and will be looking to avenge its second semi-final loss a fortnight ago, when the Blues won through to the grand final with a 16-point win. Knox registered a 45-point win over the Rowville Knights in last week’s preliminary final and will be looking to continue its momentum today. Lachlan Johnston and Jett Marget have impressed for the Falcons this season, while Frederik Harding and Aidan Tenace have shone for the Blues. The two sides drew when they met in Round 14 of the home and away season.

UNDER-13C Neighbouring clubs Forest Hill and Mitcham meet in a local derby in this season’s 13C decider. The pair renew acquaintances after last meeting in Round 9 of the home and away season, where it was the Tigers victorious by 30 points. Both sides advanced through to today’s grand final with wins over Vermont Gold; Mitcham in the second semi-final and Forest Hill in the preliminary final. Watch out for the Tigers’ Smith, Robins and Peter-Budge each with 19 majors for the year, while the Zebras’ Fanartzis and Mitchell with 25 and 21 goals respectively are ones to watch in today’s 1 v. 3 grand final.

UNDER-13D It’s the second-placed Mooroolbark Gold versus third-placed Donvale after the two sides last met in the qualifying final, with a victory to the Magpies by 22 points in the pair’s only meeting this year. Billy Toleman has been a star for the Mustangs this year with 45 goals including a best of seven in Round 7, while Fraser Dunstone has 29 for the Magpies. Donvale downed East Ringwood White by seven points in the second semi, while Mooroolbark Gold defeated the Roos by 10 points last week to advance through to today’s grand final.

FOOTY FACTORY By: Dyson Baker (EFL Junior Football Manager)

O

ver the first eight weeks of the AFL season we have already seen debuts by several of the 2017 EFL draft class. Pleasingly a number of these players have taken to top level football, with one in serious contention of claiming the 2018 NAB Rising Star. At a peak this season there were 24 former EFL juniors playing on any given weekend for AFL clubs, a testament to the determination of these footballers during their professional careers but more importantly to their junior club during their formative years. A number of these players also partook in representative football, playing for the Eastern Football League, Eastern Ranges and for some, Vic Metro. Representative football gives our players the chance to showcase their skills against the best in their age group and importantly in front of scouts for various programs. Through June this season, while all other players were looking forward to the mid-season break, 150 players across boys and girls football will be taking to the field representing the Eastern Football League and the Eastern Region Girls Football League in the AFL Victoria Metro Championships. The Metro Champs are the first step on the talented player pathway and give our best and brightest under-14 and 15s the chance to strut their stuff of the big stage. Whilst not the be all and end all to getting drafted, Interleague football has been the stepping stone for several of our finest to take their first steps into the limelight.

The League sends scouts far and wide to ensure that players eligible for interleague are given the best chance of showcasing their skills. Preparation began back in September/October last year with trials held for the under-15 girls and under-14 boys – lists are trimmed for 120+ down to the 52 per squad we take into the Metro Championships. This season, to make the most of the limited time we had available, the league invested into a two-day training camp held at Rowville Sports Academy. The camp was a chance for coaches to get to know players and furthermore start to develop a range of skills that will assist them in not only preparing at interleague level but also in their club football as well. Engaging sessions with both tackling coach Mal Bangs as well as the team from RISE High Performance set the tone early on day one. Coaches were given ample time with players to begin to run through both theory and practical game plans and tactics as well as skills sessions. Through our partnership with Hawthorn Football Club, the League has been able to engage three players to act as interleague ambassadors; Dana De Bont (Hawthorn VFLW) as well as Liam Shiels and James Sicily gave both groups some great insight into exactly what it takes at AFL level but also what younger players need to expect moving through the ranks at junior level. Shiels, a former EFL Junior, played for both The Basin and Boronia at club level before being drafted by the Hawks in 2009. Having never played a representative game for the EFL, the now Hawthorn vice-captain spoke about dealing with disappointment as well as Jaidyn Stephenson celebrates a goal. PICTURE: AAP

These players have all excelled throughout the junior ranks and continued to thrive in the representative football environment. The four boys who played as part of the World Team in the under-16 championships did so as bottom age players and handled themselves brilliantly.

The 2017 draft class was one of the biggest to come from the Eastern Region with eight players coming from EFL clubs, including two players selected in the first round of the National Draft. The two first round picks have been standouts for their clubs to date with Ferntree Gully’s Jaidyn Stephenson a serious contender for the 2018 NAB Rising Star. Stephenson has booted 30 goals for the season playing 20 games to date and looks poised to play a key role in Collingwood’s 2018 finals tilt. Taken at pick five, Adam Cerra has crossed the Nullarbor and continued to thrive on field with Fremantle, playing 14 games in 2018. The Norwood junior debuted for the Dockers in Round 2 playing majority of the season in the Senior side before earning himself a Rising Star nomination in Round 16. A previous winner of the Leader Young Gun for Division 3/4, Bayley Fritsch has gone from strength to strength after being drafted by Melbourne from their VFL affiliate, Casey, with pick 31. The Coldstream junior has played 17 games for the Demons in 2018 including a career high four-goal performance against St Kilda in Round 15. Our under-14 and under-15 EFL reps from 2018 have this journey ahead of them with some of the likely to be playing on the biggest stage in the next three to five years – with the abundance of talent mixed with a lot of hard work there is no reason for this not to occur. Bailey Fritsch has made an impact at AFL level this season. PICTURE: Adam Trafford/AFL Media

The Eastern Footballer - EFL Junior Finals 2018

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW – UNDER-14 UNDER-14A A week off for East Ringwood Blue after defeating Lysterfield Teal by 13 points in the second semi-final has the Roos well-rested ahead of today’s decider, while the Wolves have had to take the longer route after playing out a thriller with North Ringwood in the preliminary final, holding on by just four points. Minor premiers East Ringwood Blue will be looking to complete the perfect season, currently holding an undefeated record for the season while Lysterfield Teal will be looking to spoil the party, having finished third at the end of the home and away season with nine wins and a draw.

UNDER-14B Just six points separated the under-14B grand finallists last time they met, with Vermont defeating The Basin in the second semi-final to win through to the big one. Conversely, The Basin overcame a 12-point half-time deficit to defeat Upper Ferntree Gully in the preliminary final last weekend. The Bears hold a 2-1 advantage this year over Vermont, having met twice during the home and away season in Round 7 (26 points) and Round 14 (nine points). Can the Eagles square the ledger in the pair’s biggest clash yet? Time will tell.

UNDER-14C Matching up for the first time since Round 12, Wantirna South will be looking to turn around the result after Chirnside Park claimed the win by 32 points. The Panthers finished second on the ladder while the Devils have put together a stellar latter part of the season as it looks to pinch a flag from fifth position – remarkably after knocking off minor-premier Coldstream by eight points in last week’s preliminary final. Today’s third and final bout between the two sees the Panthers and Devils locked at one win apiece against each other after meeting twice during the home and away season.

UNDER-14D Minor premier Montrose heads into today’s grand final with third-placed Boronia as deserved favourite after a 55-point win over the Hawks two weeks ago in the pair’s second semi-final meeting. The two sides also met once during the home and away season, with Montrose recording a 76-point win over Boronia in Round 10. Montrose’s Reece Johnson has had a successful year up forward with 46 goals to his name, including a season-high bag of eight in Round 5 of the season. Meanwhile, Boronia’s Hayden Landy will be looking to add to his tally of 20 goals for the year, including kicking two crucial goals in the Hawks’ first final.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW – UNDER-15 UNDER-15A The two standout sides of the season Lysterfield Teal (first) and Vermont Purple (second) meet today for the first time since Round 9 of the season, where on that day it was the Eagles swooping in for an 11-point victory. When the pair met in Round 2, it was a different story with the Wolves claiming a 33-point win away from home. On neutral territory today, the ledger sits at 1-1 between the two. Vermont Purple comfortably accounted for East Ringwood Blue by 30 points in last weekend’s preliminary final, while Lysterfield Teal has enjoyed a week off after advancing through to the grand final off the back of a heartstopping five-point win over the Roos in the second semi-final. At one apiece, today awaits the pair’s ultimate tiebreaker.

UNDER-15B A fortnight ago saw an inaccurate Basin outfit narrowly defeat Chirnside Park by five points in the second semi-final, kicking 7.15 (57) to 8.4 (52) to advance through to today’s grand final. The loss for the Panthers set up a preliminary final date with Lilydale as they barnstormed their way into today’s decider, leading at all changes to record a five-goal victory. Head to head this year, The Basin holds a 2-1 advantage, defeating Chirnside Park by six points in Round 3 before the Panthers turned the tables in Round 10 with a 10-point win. Watch out for Chirnside Park’s Jordan Eales, whose season has so far produced 44 goals, while Lachlan Saunders-Emerson has 40 majors.

UNDER-15C In this first versus third match-up, minor premier Scoresby/Lysterfield will be looking to continue its recent dominance over Montrose, after a 25-point win in the second semi-final. The loss for Montrose meant a preliminary final meeting with Knox, with the Demons doing it in emphatic fashion by 34 points to advance through. In the duo’s only home and away meeting in Round 9, it was Scoresby/Lysterfield by just four points, meaning a 2-0 record over Montrose this year. Montrose’s Toby O’Reilly will be looking for a big match today, having kicked 52 majors for the season, while Chambers, Murphy and Bosch have kicked 18, 14 and 14 respectively.

UNDER-15D In dramatic circumstances, Kilsyth made its way through to the grand final off the back of a six-point win over today’s opponent South Croydon, followed by a comfortable 27-point win over Vermont Gold in the second semi-final. The Dogs have had to endure three matches this finals series, with aforementioned Kilsyth before overcoming East Ringwood by 16 points in the second semi and Vermont Gold by 42 points in last week’s preliminary final. Head to head, Kilsyth and South Croydon have played on three occasions this year, with the Cougars ahead 2-1. What better day for the Dogs to square things up than on the biggest occasion of them all. www.efl.org.au

EASTERN RANGES MATCH REPORT (BOYS) - R14 vs SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS EASTERN RANGES - 8.8.56 SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS - 9.12.66 Last Saturday’s match against Sandringham Dragons was a close-fought, thrilling affair that had twists and turns throughout. Kicking against a firm breeze in the first quarter, our boys did well to handle a Sandringham team full of run and energy across the ground. Much of the quarter was evenly poised with not a lot of scoring at either end. A couple of goals went the opposition’s way early in the second quarter - taking the margin to 23 points at one stage - before three rapid-fire goals before the half time siren reeled in the margin to just four points. The third quarter was once again a defensive battle with both teams scoring 1.4 to set up a thrilling final term. The coach’s words at three-quarter time appeared to have a stunning impact with the players, as they scored three goals in as many minutes to propel Eastern into a 13-point lead.

www.efl.org.au

To the home crowd’s dismay, however, Sandringham fought a last-ditch battle to get themselves back into the lead, and hit the front with six minutes to go. In the end, Sandringham had kicked the final four goals of the match to snatch a 10-point win. The result was a bitter blow for the Ranges boys, who had looked like they would end their five-match losing streak and win in their final home game of the season. In the end, a fighting effort that on another day might have been enough to secure the four points - hopefully we get to see those glimpses of our best footy more often in the last remaining games of season 2018. Eastern’s best were Mitch Mellis, Kye Quirk, Joel Nathan, Jack Kritopoulos, James Blanck, and Devlin Brereton. Goalkickers were: J Kritopoulos 3 D Brereton 2 A Kalcovski C Black J Blanck This weekend is a bye, before the final two home and away games of season 2018 are played back to back.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW – UNDER-17

UNDER - 17 PREMIER Mooroolbark will head into today’s big dance supremely confident after comfortably defeating opponent Vermont by 64 points in Round 12 of the home and away season. The Eagles cruised to victory last week against East Ringwood Blue to the tune of 34 points to book their place in today’s decider. Head to head this season, the pair have met three times with Mooroolbark leading 2-1 – the Eagles last beat the Mustangs in Round 5 by two points at Heights Reserve.

UNDER - 17A The two standout teams in their division this season, Lilydale Blue (first) and Knox Red (second) meet for the second time in a fortnight, after Knox Red took the honours in the second semi-final by 29 points. Eden Champion for Lilydale Blue has delivered the goods this season, slotting 36 goals including a haul of eight in Round 6 – and two last weekend in his side’s preliminary final win over Ferntree Gully. Meanwhile, Knox Red boasts four players to have kicked double figures this season, led by Benjamin O’Brien with 19. Head to head the pair have met twice in 2018 – both tasting victory – with Lilydale Blue defeating Knox Red in Round 9 the only meeting before the second semi-final.

UNDER - 17B Far and away the best side of under-17B in the 2018 season to date, Boronia finished atop the ladder five wins clear, while Donvale finished in third. The Hawks recorded a 38-point win over the Magpies to advance through to today’s grand final and earned a weekend off, while Donvale overcame Forest Hill in the preliminary final. The two sides have met three times this season, with Boronia winning all three to date – the closest margin came in Round 7 and 14 with respective 16-point wins to the Hawks. Keep a lookout for Donvale’s multi-pronged attack with Ryan Oppy (29 goals), Ethan Duncan (26) and Dominic Tipper (20) all proving hard to stop this year, while Boronia’s Mason Storr has 31 majors to his name along with Cooper Dunkinson (21).

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW – UNDER-17

UNDER - 17C It’s third-placed Norwood Purple taking on fourth-placed Wantirna South as the pair meet for the first time since Round 11 of the home and away season, where the Devils were victorious by 20 points. Wantirna South has seen a remarkable run of form this finals series, surviving an elimination final to defeat Vermont Purple, before turning its attention to account for Chirnside Park in the first semi-final and last week, a heart-stopping four-point victory over a highly-fancied Kilsyth outfit. Conversely, Norwood Purple has played three matches this finals series, defeating Chirnside Park and Kilsyth on their way to the grand final. Today will be just the second time Wantirna South and Norwood Purple have met this year – will the Norsemen square the ledger or will the Devils make it a clean-sweep?

UNDER - 17D For the third time this year, Upper Ferntree Gully and Lilydale Gold meet. The duo drew in Round 1 of this season with the scores locked at 45 apiece on the final siren, while in the return bout in Round 11 it was Lilydale Gold by 31 points. The Falcons finished two games clear in first, while the Kings finished in fifth position. Four Falcons have recorded 10 or more goals this season – Bates (12), Calcaterra, Coppi (11), and Price (10) while Kai Ward (37 goals) and Luke Durant (23) are ones to watch for the Kings.

UNDER - 17E A local derby rounds out the under-17 competition for season 2018 – minor premier Lysterfield Grey takes on the neighbouring second-placed Ferntree Gully Eagles White. The pair last met in the second semi-final with the Eagles recording a 19-point victory to book their place in the grand final, while the Wolves have had to take a longer route – defeating Noble Park by five goals in last weekend’s preliminary final. Today will be the fifth time the two sides have played each other this season, with both the Eagles and Wolves winning two each. The stage is set for the ultimate tiebreaker.

LILYDALE PLAYS TWO By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL

emphasis of those 13s and 14s upwards because we see those kids as being the next senior footballers at our club.

Regardless of which way the results fall, it adds to an already successful year on-field as a whole.

“Our program is designed for that outcome and so in five or six years’ time we can look at the senior team and go, ‘that boy played and that boy played’, and I think it was only halfway through this year that a senior game was being played and someone made the comment to me that 18 of the 22 that ran out onto the ground played juniors.

T simply doesn’t get any better than this.

Lilydale Football Netball Club today boasts two under-17 sides playing off for silverware, in a true testament to the Falcons’ strength as a junior set-up. The under-17A side will take on Knox, while the 17D side battles Upper Ferntree Gully Red.

The club’s under-19 outfit is currently sitting in second on the ladder with finals assured, just two points behind Park Orchards. In the senior ranks, the Falcons are finalsbound and have the all-important top-two spot locked away for the double chance in the Division 2 finals series, perched in second-place behind Doncaster East. Remarkably, the vast majority of the senior team also played in multiple junior Lilydale sides together – and despite the youthful line-up, they look set to shake up the finals series. The under-17As, known as Lilydale Blue, finished minor premiers and again meet Knox Red after going down by 29-points in the second semi-final. The two sides are 1-1 heading into today’s decider. Meanwhile, the 17D side, known as Lilydale Gold, also finished minor premiers and have been the standout side in their respective division this season, winning their way directly through to the grand final after holding off Rowville by five points in the second semi-final. Junior president Damian Chippendale has been thrilled with the efforts of the club’s sides this season as many of the under-17s boys look to transition to the senior club in 2019. “It’s fantastic,” Chippendale said. “We at Lilydale see the future of our senior club in the juniors. We really put a strong www.efl.org.au

“That’s an aim and a goal for us – that’s where our future lies.” Off the field, the club continues to engage in community programs as it looks to produce not only quality young footballers, but upstanding members of the community. “We’ve got a few other programs in the background that aren’t huge, but we offer our 17s boys a trip at the start of the year to the Tiwi Islands where they play the curtainraiser to the grand final in Tiwi – we’re the only club that’s got that permission and we’ve been doing that for a number of years and we see it as a character-building exercise,” Chippendale said. “We like them to leave the club successful – success doesn’t mean that they’ve won premierships, success for us means that they’ve left our junior club and they’re respectful young men who are doing everything right in the community and being good people.” As the blue-collar Falcons continue to boast one of the strongest junior programs in the competition, the key to sustained success down the track at the senior club depends on the lifeblood – its juniors. It’s an understatement to say the future is a bright one at the Lilydale Sports Oval. “If we’re not as financial as some clubs, the strength lies in having good juniors come through,” Chippendale said. 59
