over. Tod has performed with several groups in the area including the Village Playhouse of Wauwatosa, West Allis Players, and Theatre on Main in Oconomowoc. He was last seen in VPW’s children’s show The Land of the Dragon as Road Wanderer. He would like to thank the marvelous cast and crew for making this an excellent adventure! D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S I’ve been listening to the MISS SAIGON soundtrack for close to 20 years, and now getting the chance to direct this show is truly an ‘American Dream’ come true for me! I love this show! The music is so full of emotion and the range of feeling is immense – there is happiness, pain, desperation, love, longing, pride and pure joy. In preparing for this show I studied a lot about the Vietnam War to understand these characters and their place in the world at that time. What I ultimately learned is that this really is a simple story set against a backdrop of extraordinary and terrible circumstances. It is a story about love. Chris meets Kim and everything suddenly makes sense for the first time in a long time. Their instant attraction and love for one another cannot be explained, it simply is. Love is what this story is all about – Kim’s love for her ‘husband’ and her son, Chris’ love for Kim and Ellen, Ellen’s love for her husband, Thuy’s love for his country, John’s devotion to the ‘bui doi’ and the Engineer’s dream of what he believes America will do for him. How far they are willing to go to see that love realized and their dreams fulfilled is a question we will answer in the next two hours or so. Everyone I’ve had the privilege of working with on this production has been incredible! There is no end to the talent required to pull off a show of this size and I am continually amazed by the people I’ve been able to collaborate with. All of the cast have been completely devoted, focused and hilarious! Our production staff is creative, resourceful, diligent and always indulgent of my crazy ideas and requests (at least to my face). This month marks the 20th anniversary of my working with WCT and 20 years of working with our costume designer, Sharon Sohner who has taught me that real friendship is one of the most important ways that we can love one another. Thank you, dear friend. I hope that MISS SAIGON will entertain you, move you and make you want to go out into the world and do what you can to make the lives of those around you a little nicer, a little more comfortable and filled with love. I believe it shows us that even in the most desperate of circumstances, that spark of hope and connection is still possible. Gee, I love the theatre. Mark E. Schuster May 2012

S P O T L I G H T O N T H E B OA R D O F D I R E C TO R S Many of you are regular attendees to the Waukesha Civic Theatre, hopefully season ticket holders. Thus you are aware of the very high quality of performances that are presented throughout the season. If you are here for the first time and enjoy the excellent performance of the actors and actresses, please consider upgrading to a flex pass or even becoming a season ticket holder. You will receive a discount on all of the wonderful performances yet to be presented. If you like comedy, the Comedy Tonight events are great for a fun night out and it beats what you will get on television. Check out our website or pick up a flyer in the theatre’s lobby. Tell your friends about the great shows we have at the Waukesha Civic Theatre. Get a group of friends or neighbors together, have dinner downtown, and then come and enjoy a show. We can only continue this high quality of entertainment if we fill the seats. Please note that the cost to attend WCT is far below other venues, but the value is worthy of attending. Our performers are not paid and only seek your applause for work well done. That said, now sit back and enjoy the very dramatic musical “Miss Saigon,” winner of eleven Tony Awards, on our Waukesha Civic Theatre stage! Ralph H. Zick Board Director M AD CORNER “Miss Saigon? Really? You’ve got to be kidding me? How are you going to pull that off?” I can’t tell you how many times I have heard this since we announced our season last year. My answer has always been “Mark E. Schuster, that’s how!” Mark has been a part of the WCT family of directors and designers for twenty years, and I wouldn’t trust this show to anyone else. I am so excited to present this incredible musical to the Waukesha community I can barely stand it. I hope you like it! We are also announcing our 56th season, including a brand new eight show package, and a partnership with 14 downtown Waukesha restaurants that are giving WCT subscribers an incredible deal all year long. We continue our tradition of quality live entertainment with a list of more than 40 different entertainment options throughout the year. We hope you will continue to support us as we move into the future. One way, and arguably the best way, to support WCT is to spread the word about Waukesha’s best kept secret. It always amazes me when I meet someone in Waukesha who has no idea what a fantastic organization we have right here in the heart of the community. Tell people about what we do and all we offer. Enrich. Challenge. Entertain. That says it all, so keep watching, keep participating with, and keep supporting this cultural cornerstone. We couldn’t do it without you.
