FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Minimizing Industrial Impact in West-Central Alberta Caribou Habitat February 21, 2006, Hinton, Alberta –The Caribou Landscape Management Association is a working, real-life example of how different industries and companies can work together towards integrated land management. Specifically, members in the Association are committing resources to projects designed to minimize their impacts in the habitat of the A La Peche and Little Smoky caribou herds. “Oil and gas producers and forestry companies with operations in west-central Alberta need to work together to minimize their impacts on the habitat of the Little Smoky and A La Peche caribou herds,” Greg Branton, co-chair of the Caribou Landscape Management Association and forestry supervisor, Alberta Newsprint Company states. “Coordinating resource development makes sense and leads to ecological, economic and social benefits – the core of sustainability.” The members of the Caribou Landscape Management Association are focusing their efforts and resources on projects that minimize the impact of industrial activities on caribou habitats. “In the province there is a lot of discussion and attention being given to the long-term conservation of caribou habitat and populations. The members in the Association are focusing on what they can do immediately to aid in the long-term conservation of the Little Smoky and A La Peche caribou habitat,” states Wayne Thorp, director of the Caribou Landscape Management Association. “Members in the Association recognize their work represents a piece of the caribou conservation puzzle.” Members in the Caribou Landscape Management Association are comprised of all the forest companies and the major oil and gas producers operating in the ranges of the A La Peche and Little Smoky caribou ranges. The Aboriginal community Aseniwuche Winewak Nation is also a member in the Association. The Caribou Landscape Management Association is housed within the Foothills Model Forest organization, a non-profit organization with over 100 partners committed to advancing sustainable forest and resource management. - 30 For more information about the Foothills Model Forest contact: Lisa Jones Communications and Extension Manager Foothills Model Forest Phone: 780 865-8329 Website: www.fmf.ca
