Why selling mushroom coffees is a smart move
The market for mushroom coffee is booming, driven by a growing customer appetite for functional beverages that offer something beyond basic nutrition.
Cheerful Buddha was an early forerunner of this trend, producing a range of mushroom coffees and vegan lattes using ethically sourced ingredients as part of its commitment to boosting health and happiness naturally.
Functional mushrooms such as reishi, lion's mane and chaga have a long history of being consumed for health. Among other things, they are adaptogenic, meaning they help the body adapt to stress, and have antioxidant properties, which means they protect cells from damage that
may lead to disease.
Cheerful Buddha's mushroom coffees blend these ingredients with Rainforest Alliance (RFA) Certified luxury arabica ground beans and other health-supporting ingredients including cacao and ashwagandha. The result is a smooth-tasting drink that won't give you the coffee jitters. Make it like normal coffee, using a using a cafetiere, moka pot, chemex or coffee machine, then sit back and relax.
For those who prefer a creamy drink, Cheerful Buddha's chaga and lion's mane superfood lattes deliver the power of functional mushrooms combined with other superfoods such as ashwagandha, ginger, cinnamon and lucuma. The range also includes Cacao Bliss hot chocolate, which contains lion's mane and chaga mushrooms, and a matcha latte, made with ceremonial grade matcha, reishi mushrooms and ashwagandha. All Cheerful Buddha's products are vegancertified and as delicious as they are life-enhancing.
Cheerful Buddha is offering 15% off its mushroom range for first-time customers who are readers of FDM. Just cite 'FDM' when submitting an enquiry to sales@cheerfulbuddha co.uk

Newburgh Foods has increased its poultry production capacity by 60% with the installation of an automated Starfrost spiral freezer.
The company, which supplies poultry products to major supermarkets and restaurants across England, had an existing contract with a fast food chain that recently increased its capacity requirements. This led Newburgh Foods to review its freezing process capabilities and seek a solution that would fulfil the substantial increase for its customer.
Newburgh Foods awarded the contract to Starfrost, a leading manufacturer of mechanical freezing and chilling equipment. Starfrost supplied and custom-
built a Helix spiral freezer.
Using natural refrigerant CO2, Starfrost’s equipment freezes up to 20 tonnes per day and has enabled Newburgh Foods to significantly increase its production capacity while delivering the additional benefit of reducing freezing times to less than 85 minutes.
Newburgh Food’s Operations Manager, Phil Trew discussed the project: “We chose mechanical freezing over a nitrogen cryogenic alternative because it better suited our criteria and, of course, due to the soaring, unstable cost of gas. The spiral freezer has allowed us to significantly increase production capacity by 60% and substantially reduce freezing time.” T

Collaboration between two iconic Welsh brands is the “sweetest marriage”
Having brewed simple and elegant mead recipes for twenty years, Afon Mêl are now moving into new ground with their limited release, small-batch meads. These meads aim to explore the impact that different ageing conditions will have on their carefully chosen and highly valued honeys.
The first two products in this Limited edition collection are further aged variations on their much-loved Heather Mead (Golden Fork, 2019 Great Taste Awards) and are matured further with Welsh producers Penderyn Distillery casks. Sam Cooper, owner and head mead-maker at Afon Mêl said, “This collection of small batch meads includes the two products matured in ex-bourbon and ex-madeira barrels which have been used at Penderyn to mature their Welsh whisky, once emptied are filled with mead. What comes out is wonderfully and subtly different to what goes in”.
The provenance of the barrels; first bourbon or madeira, then Penderyn Single Malt Welsh whisky, makes a significant difference to the overall profile of the Afon Mêl meads, with the ex-madeira adding an intoxicating blend of citrus and spice aroma alongside the heather honey's naturally smokiness, and the ex-bourbon lending the product a little more heft with some potent vanilla notes.
To make the collaboration even sweeter, Afon Mêl and Penderyn Distillery have
established a barrel-share agreement, so we can hope to see some mead-cask aged whiskies released at some point in the future. This experiment has been five years in the making, but if there's something whisky and mead makers can agree on it's that patience is a necessity when making the finest products possible.
Sam also added, “All the new meads created allow us to explore different mead making methods, with these small batch meads we can showcase a new and exciting side to Afon Mel’s Meads.” Sam seems to have a fair few ideas buzzing around his head, and only time will tell which will end up becoming the next small batch release. For now, the Heather mead matured in Penderyn casks make for a very fine first installment.

The National Convenience Show returned to the NEC, with three co-located shows: Food & Drink Expo, Farm Shop & Deli Shop and Foodex Manufacturing solutions, part of the UK Food & Drink Shows all under one roof, from 24- 26 April.
The crème-de-la creme across hospitality, manufacturing, convenience retail stores and grocery, came together to showcase new products, drive businesses forward, during an ever-escalating cost-of-living crisis.
With over 25,000 visitors and 1,500 exhibitors, it is the biggest single event for the convenience retailing sector, across forecourts, wholesalers and supplies. With many key decision-makers in attendance, it was the perfect place to pitch sales ideas, network and meet influential stakeholders.

Holistic Health Company Of The Month
The elixir of Shilajit: where ancient wisdom meets modern-day science
In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are delighted to announce Altai Mountain Shilajit as our celebrated Company of the Month.
Bruce Lee is known for his iconic films throughout the early 1970’s and remains a modern-day hero for many martial arts fans around the world. He was well known for his healthy, balanced diet and swore by food supplements such as Shilajit. The mineral-rich resin has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years as a panacea and is known in Sanskrit as ‘destroyer of weakness.’ It is found on the highest altitude mountain regions on Earth and through traditional harvesting methods and careful purification to remove impurities, can be used to treat inflammations, revitalise immune systems, fortify bones and even aid reproductive systems.
Altai Mountain Shilajit is a leading UK-based Shilajit supplier, with an online store delivering across the world. With its adaptogenic mineral pitch properties, it can regulate hormone levels, aid iron deficiency and boost ATP in athletes. Established in 2020, this family-run business has grown exponentially and is now routinely endorsed by athletes, such as Kyle Sinckler (England & British Lions Rugby), Mike Figlak (UFC Lightweight) and Rhi Hudson (Cage Warriors Double Champion) for its restorative, performance and cognitive function boosting qualities.
Fresh from this year’s NOPEX Trade Show, Altai Mountain Shilajit is celebrating the success of the Shilajit Hemp Drops (now available to buy from the company TikTok store.) https://vm.tiktok.com/ ZGJxbs5vh/
The new product was a finalist in The Best New Herbal Product category, in the NOPEX Innovation Awards. We spoke to delighted Director: Joe Barker, to find out more about this successful new, UK company,
“Shilajit is a lightning bolt for the body: packed
with 85 essential nutrients including vitamins, minerals, carbon 60, humins and fulvic acid. It has traditionally been used in Ayurvedic Herbalism for centuries for holistic health prevention and management. From spiritual healers, cage fighters to anyone looking for an energy boost, to it is known powerfully as ‘mountain blood,’ and is now backed up by scientific clinical research.
One of the most interesting studies on shilajit and its effect on balancing and regulating hormones, was one study where the male participants taking shilajit resin over a 90-day period significantly increased their natural testosterone production (over 23%), sperm count (up 18%) and mobility (up 61%!) on average.
The results in the female group showed no significant change in testosterone levels however after taking shilajit for 90 days consecutively, the female group saw their menstrual cycle regulate and start to synchronise, with enhanced hair/nail growth,” adds Joe.
The company is based in Cardiff, with all products easily available from the website: www. altaimountainshilajit.com and TikTok store: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGJxbs5vh/
With a keen eye on sustainability, the shilajit is traditionally harvested from the Altai Mountains and the Himalayan region and then purified with hot water and sunlight to remove any impurities. All products are subject to rigorous UK-third party laboratory testing and with no added ingredients, are 100% natural, organic and vegan-friendly. Customers who return the reusable pots, are offered a 20% discount off their next purchase and customers can also collect loyalty points with each order.
“Our products are packed with beneficial minerals such as magnesium, zinc and iron and plantbased antioxidants. The benefits are endless: from promoting healthy blood sugar, supporting healthy ageing, detoxing, supporting kidneys/urinary tract,
to boosting the immune system. We have loyal customers with a wide range of health conditions, with many using our products to treat arthritis, a variety of skin conditions, anaemia, chronic fatigue, improving sleep, to boosting fertility through to energy boosting for athletic training,” explains Joe.
The products are attractively packaged, such as The Pure Himalayan Shilajit Resin: available in a 50g Miron reusable glass jar, protecting the product from harmful UV light. The pure shilajit resin arrives with a free stainless-steel spoon, for mixing with liquid daily. The Altai Mountain Pure Siberian Shilajit Resin is a best-seller with customers and comes in a 40g jar.
For those who prefer to take capsules, the Altai Mountain Shilajit Wildcrafted Sea Moss comes in a handy pack of 120 capsules, for daily use. There is also the Himalayan Shilajit and Shilajit Mushroom Blend (Chaga, Reishi, Cordyceps & Lions Mane) range, to choose from.
The Altai Mountain Shilajit Skin Care Bundle makes a wonderful gift, with a skin balm/soap bar combination. With the innate shilajit healing properties, the products calm dry skin, reduce blemishes and even encourage cellular repair and rejuvenation.
From Superfood, self-care detoxing, all-year round immune support, to energy boosts for sport champions, this is ancient elixir- from the highest altitudes on Earth, now available in resin, capsule and hemp drop formulations.
Altai Mountain Shilajit was delighted to be announced as our Company of the Month,
“From an initial love and admiration of Bruce Lee, to a curiosity about shilajit, we’ve worked hard to design and market holistic health products. I’ve trained in Ayurvedic Herbalism, so I’m able to explain how shilajit balances all three doshas of vata, pitta and kapha. With its innate adaptogenic
properties, it works essentially as an ally to the body and mind.
Shilajit has a whole range of interesting points of study and of course many health benefits, from positive effects on testosterone levels, immune system functions and the central nervous system. Shilajit, in particular has changed my own life in so many ways that I feel a true passion in bringing top quality shilajit products to the UK and helping people improve their own lives.
We are delighted to be honoured as Company of the Month and plan to grow the company further over the next twelve months.”
Many regular customers have left glowing reviews on Trustpilot, such as Mario Saeed (MMA Professional),
“I take the shilajit resin every morning. I mix it with my honey and lemon. I feel energised and it has really helped with my recovery, giving me a boost in the morning. I’m looking forward to continually using it and seeing the improvements. Since I’ve been taking it, I can see improvements in my recovery more than anything and overall, I feel in a very good condition. I don’t feel tired or fatigued in the day, even during training. It’s great! I love it!”
Since the success at NOPEX with the Shilajit Hemp Drops, Altai Mountain Shilajit has been showcasing its popular, best-selling products at holistic health fairs and trade exhibitions around the country.
Meet and chat with Altai Mountain Shilajit at Product Earth EXPO 2023 from the 18- 20 August at NAEC Stoneleigh.

Food Redistribution Charity Of The Month
Help stop families going hungry this Summer: give food to FareShare
In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are delighted to announce that FareShare is our food redistribution Charity of the Month.
FareShare is the nation’s largest food distribution charity and has been tackling hunger and food waste for over 25 years.
With the huge hike in food, childcare and energy costs, millions of families are struggling to feed their children. FareShare urgently needs more food industry companies to give them their surplus bulk ingredients and food, or donate products, in all forms: fresh (perishable) chilled, ambient, nonperishable (tins/packets) and frozen.
“There are an astonishing three million tonnes of food wasted annually across the UK, equivalent to seven billion meals. We act as the intermediary, collecting surplus food waste from farmers, supermarkets, wholesalers and caterers and taking it to our warehouses.
We then pass on the surplus food (54,000 tonnes annually) to 8,500 charities and community groups around the country. These charities support the local community through food banks, school breakfast clubs, older people’s lunch groups, homeless shelters and community cafes. These groups support millions of families and individuals living in food poverty every day, but we need more food to meet the skyrocketing demand for our service.” explained
Lucy Allison, FareShare’s Head of Food Industry.FareShare will come to your company, collect surplus food and take it to one of the 34 regional distribution centres across the UK. The food is stored in compliance with stringent, legal food and health & safety standards, prolonging the life of the food for as long as possible.
Food distribution works on many societal levels: preventing food waste, feeding hungry families but also saving charities and community groups money, so they can focus on much-needed services such as mental health support, debt advice and legal services.
Wigan Youth Zone for example, is one of the largest
youth zones in Europe and supports local 8–19-yearolds. By saving on food costs, the enterprising youth space not only offers nutritious, affordable meals for £1 in its on-site Canteen, but has its own Hell’s Kitchen: where youngsters are trained in culinary skills, in partnership with Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food.
“Food distribution feeds hungry families in food poverty but also supports community hubs across the country with holistic wrap-round services, so you are directly supporting local community wellbeing,” adds Lucy Allison.
One successful long-term FareShare partnership is with TD1 Youth Hub, Galashiels in the Scottish Borders.
Douglas Ormston and his team have seen first-hand the toll that the recent rises in the cost of living have taken on children and families.
“There’s a lot of anxiety and concern, now that people are starting to see the price rises take effect,” says Douglas, who is Manager of TD1 Youth Hub in Galashiels.
“We hear some of the young people talking about how their mum’s had to take a second job, so she’s not home as much after school to cook them dinner. So now we’re seeing more young people who tend not to have a place to go or a meal after school.”
TD1 Youth Hub helps young people with support, guidance and opportunities to shape their futures and livelihoods. Typically working with 130 children and young people every week, the group helps members navigate challenges regarding food poverty, education, and isolation.
The group has been getting food from FareShare since 2016. In that time, the organisation has had the opportunity to introduce children and young people to new foods and encourage them to get to know each other over a well-cooked meal.
“We receive a wide variety of foods from FareShare,” said Douglas. That’s the great thing about it - we can get everything from ready meals and vegetables to fruits and treats like cakes. Because of FareShare, these young people get the chance to explore new foods and try new recipes.”
“We know that a lot of young people aren’t eating healthily,” he continued. “So many of the activities we provide we try to incorporate food, because we know that might be the only meal, they get that day.”
“We want young people to know they don’t have to ask for food,” explained Douglas. “We try to encourage a proactive approach, to get them to gain
a new skill and learn how to cook a meal out of the ingredients found in our fridge and pantry. This shows them the potential of living on their own and creating a future for themselves.”
“They can come here every day after school, so they’ve always got a meal and a place to be,” Douglas continues. “The meal can be anything –from spag bol to just a cheese toastie – so long as they get bit of sustenance in them and they know there’s somewhere they can go.”
With the Summer holidays fast approaching, FareShare is keen for companies across the UK to donate surplus food, as Lucy Allison explains further,
“A family with two children will need to cook 60 extra meals throughout the summer holidays, that children would ordinarily have at school, plus provide additional snacks. We are asking companies to dig deep and support these families.”
With the new appointment of CEO George Wright at the helm, FareShare, with support from MPs, charities, and the public, have petitioned the UK Government for £25 million to fund further food distribution.
At farm level alone, millions of tonnes of surplus food are wasted annually and this extra Government support would help farms package loose farm produce, ready to be transported to FareShare’s distribution centres.
“We have been fighting hunger and food waste since 1994 and we are asking you to join us the fight: donate today to support local communities,” states Lucy Allison.

Reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions for hospitality businesses
Olympus Power showcased its noteworthy eco-max voltage optimiser technology to impressed food, drink and hospitality representatives at this year's Hotel, Restaurant and Catering show. The power-optimising units ensure that hospitality businesses do not use electricity they don't need - taking thousands of pounds a year off bills as well as reducing the carbon footprint.
Matt Farrand, Account Manager at Olympus Power explained "The optimiser unit for a large pub or restaurant is about the size of a kitchen cupboard, that is fitted in a day, to the business's electricity supply. What the unit does is reduce the voltage coming into the building. Electricity coming from the national grid can be up to 253 volts, but you only need 220 volts for equipment to run at its best - meaning that usually you take and pay for more electricity than you need.
With a voltage optimiser fitted, you only pay for the electricity you need. This typically reduces energy bills by up to 15% which amounts to a massive
saving for high energy using venues that store or prepare food, or for hotels and inns that offer accommodation."
The optimising unit is fitted at business premises by trained engineers, immediately reducing the incoming electrical supply.
Olympus Power is saving energy costs for businesses across the UK - give them a call for a free estimate of how much you could save.

Health & Wellbeing Company Of The Month
Feel supreme with award-winning natural nutrition
In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are delighted to announce Feel Supreme as our Health & Wellbeing Company of the Month.
A recent survey by the Mental Health Foundation reports that UK Adults have been profoundly affected by the cost-of-living crisis: almost one third sleep poorly due to financial worries, almost a quarter see friends less often, many exercise less often and have curtailed time on enjoyable hobbies. This comes on top of the YouGov survey that 32% of Brits are worried that they aren’t getting enough nutrients in their diet. (British Nutrition Foundation.)
One way of realigning stress is to invest in high-quality healthcare products, designed to treat the mind and body holistically: resulting in better sleep, improved nutritional levels and overall increased wellbeing. Feel Supreme is a multi-award-winning healthcare company, based in Prescot near Liverpool. Established ten years ago by naturopathic nutritionist Matt Murphy, the company began quietly as a nutrition social media page but has since grown into a flourishing company, with global exports.
“This year we have taken a massive step-up. We've launched ten new products within the first three months, expanded in to the USA and we're just on the verge of launching into Sweden.
We source our ingredients and raw materials from all over the world and create the finished product here in our lab. Whilst this may not be totally unique, it is quite rare. We know exactly what is going into our products which are formulated by myself: a naturopathic nutritionist and I wouldn't use anything that I thought could be improved upon.
Although essentially, we are a supplement brand, there are many different sides to the business. We create our products in-house, and focus on supplying these to independent health food stores throughout the UK,
Ireland and the States (with Sweden to follow later this year). But we also supply B2C on our website and offer white label/custom manufacturing/ business startup/design work/ warehousing and fulfilment to other brands,” explains Matt.
The last two years have been exceptional for the company with its in-house Lions Mane product winning multiple awards: NHT Award for Best Healthcare Product 2022, Best Alternative Product Award 2022 and Best Supplement 2021 Award. Lions Mane, also known as Yamabushitake is an ancient mushroom, phytochemical-induced product used primarily to reduce inflammation, support gut health and nerve growth, improve cognitive functioning and protect against oxidative stress.
Feel Supreme differs from other online supplement trade sites due to its detailed product descriptions, all gleaned from Matt’s expert naturopathic nutritionist’s background. Under the ‘Words of Wellness’ section of the website, Matt has published fascinating blogs explaining the virtues of liquid chlorophyll for improved gut health or the emergence of shilajit as a panacea for low sperm count. This helps trade outlets or wholesalers fully understand the health products, which in turn can be passed onto customers in detailed formats.
Feel Supreme is a company that inspires a wealth of nutritional and wellbeing expertise, offering expert quality-assurance through all of its products. Making health issues inclusive, rather than shameful or embarrassing, Matt and his team encourage openness around health issues in society,
“We have something for everyone - we're all humans, suffering with stress, anxiety and whatever else life tasks us with,” assures Matt.
Customers appreciate the personal touch and have been quick to post glowing five-star Trustpilot reviews, endorsing exceptional customer service and product quality:
“This is one amazing company: great products and true customer service. The owner of the company actually drove to my house to drop the order off. I continue to use and support companies like this, who uphold good values and ethics and great products.”
Following the success of the award-winning Lions Mane product and exceptional customer ratings, Feel Supreme has continued to expand production: more than doubling the size of its mushroom range with new additions such as Turkey Tail, Reishi, Cordyceps, Tremella and Agaricus Blazei. This is alongside an existing popular range of CBD/CBG products, liquid chlorophyll, mushroom collection, sea moss/seaweed, shilajit, vitamins, nicotinamide/riboside anti-ageing and digestive and brain support products.
One of the most popular products is Seamoss with Bladderwrack and Spirulina: a powerhouse marine superfood, designed to promote holistic health and wellbeing, healthy thyroid functioning, improved energy levels and a boosted immune system. Fortified with 92 essential minerals, Omega-3 and vitamins A, C & K, the capsules are 100% natural, veganfriendly and non-GMO.
Another product, popular for effective digestive health is the Intestinal Cleanse: inner purity capsules. The capsules are expertly designed to combat fungal infections and parasites, flukes and worms, alleviate IBS and offer overall colon cleansing. One reviewer was delighted with the result,
“These supplements, advised as part of a 6-month programme by a professional Food Intolerance Practitioner are excellent, and have helped me re-establish my gut health after years and years of struggle. Highly recommended!”
The future looks bright for Feel Supreme with an extensive product range, loyal customer base and future export expansions as Matt explains,
“We're based in Prescot at the minute, just on the outskirts of Liverpool. But I think that we'll be looking to expand within the next year as we're starting to outgrow where we are. Building the company through Scandinavia has always been a dream of mine and this will be happening this year.”
Newcomers are offered 15% off their first order using code NEWUSER For more information, see the website below.

Cleaning Matters
Christeyns Food Hygiene steps up support for dairy industry
The UK is the thirteenth largest milk producer in the world, with milk accounting for 16.4% of total agricultural output in the UK in 2020.*
15.3bn litres were produced in 2020, worth £4.4 billion in market prices. Maintaining high standards of hygiene is crucial to continue the integrity of the sector and protect the income it provides for farmers and the dairy industry in general.
In recognition of the importance hygiene plays in the success of the UK dairy industry, Christeyns Food Hygiene is a key sponsor at this year’s International Cheese & Dairy Awards. The awards, now in their 127th year, continue the celebration of cheese and dairy and bring together passionate people from all over the world in one location. They are the oldest awards of their type in the world.
Warrington-based Christeyns Food Hygiene
is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of hygiene products, expertise and support providing a cost effective, dedicated range of detergents and disinfectants specifically formulated to meet the needs of the dairy and cheese industry.
Over the years Christeyns Food Hygiene has developed specialist detergents to clean delicate membranes enabling them to achieve their maximum flux rates and QAC-free disinfectant products to ensure that current legislation can be successfully complied with.
Optimisation, verification and validation of Cleaning In Place regimes is also an important part of daily cleaning where software packages such as Insite-CIP constantly monitor and verify the efficacy of the CIP regime on each and every clean. This ensures the highest level of food safety is achieved alongside compliance with third party standards.
“Increasing our support of the ICDA is both an
honour and a privilege,” comments CFH UK Technical Director, Peter Littleton. “We have supported the cheese & dairy sector for over 34 years and have been involved with both the trade show and the public event, previously at Nantwich and now at the Staffordshire Showground, over all this time. The extension of the Love Cheese Live event will reach out to an even larger audience this year, showcasing the very best this diverse sector has to offer.”
CFH has a team of experienced and knowledgeable support personnel with decades of dairy experience available to support dairy customers with technical, hygiene and production issues. Currently working with customers such as Wyke Farms, Belton Farms, Tomlinson Milk and Muller, CFH provides support to businesses across the UK and Ireland.

Quality cleaning products since 1948
Cleenol has been a leading UK supplier of professional cleaning and hygiene solutions for over 70 years.
Established in 1948 by the current owner’s greatgrandfather: Neville Foster, this family-run business has now grown to supply first-class cleaning and hygiene solutions to a broad spectrum of sectors including care homes, restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools, and local government, as well as logistics and utilities companies.
With its headquarters, plant and warehouse located in Banbury, Oxfordshire, Cleenol delivers nationwide through its Partner network and exports to a number of countries globally, and with Cleenol Middle East in Dubai and other partners in West Africa and Australia, is looking to take the Cleenol brand even further afield.
We caught up with Paul Twiss, Head of Marketing, to find out more about this leading family run UK company, “Cleenol may be 75 years old this year, but we are not slowing down! We have new leadership, refreshed our vision, updated the look, feel and content of our portfolio ready for new markets and we are engaging in new partnerships across every aspect of our business. So there has been lots of change.
“Being family-owned means, we can bring significant flexibility to our commercial relationships, where many of the larger more corporate suppliers are burdened by red tape and complex hierarchical decision-making processes.
“For customers of the Cleenol branded products, we deliver COSHH Awareness training, on site audits and surveys, formal product training and field sales support either alone or with our partner distributors'' salespeople. For own label or contract customers, we also add technical, developmental and regulatory assistance and design support, either offering full service or task specific work.”
The extensive range of products range from: handwash/hand sanitisers, air fresheners, carpet cleaners, floor cleaners, over cleaners, to toilet cleaners, across the British Nova floor care range, Evolution super-concentrated cleaning products, and own brand/private label cleaning products.
With a growing user/buyer focus on the sustainability of the products they use, Cleenol can point to its long-established track record in providing products that offer a suitable solution. The most recent embodiment is the in-house green standard: edencleen mark. All products within the edencleen range meet the EU Ecolabel-ISO 14024 environmental standards of packaging and chemistry. These include edencleen multi-purpose degreaser, toilet cleaner, laundry cleaner and fabric conditioner, and drain maintainer. edencleen products have been developed using RSPO certified palm oil derivatives, no animal derived products, no parabens, formaldehyde, CMI/MIT, triclosan, phosphates, chlorine bleaches, optical brighteners, quaternary ammonium compounds and use 100% bio-based surfactant - made by using bio-based ethylene oxide which is manufactured from biomass ethanol.
Combining carefully formulated products, with appropriate packaging, using recycled material or recyclable componentry, the range’s mostly colourless liquid and low fragrance usage (reducing VOC’s) are designed to convey a transparency and straightforwardness of their approach.
The future looks cleaner and safer with Cleenol and they look forward to the next 75 years and the 5th generation of family leadership.

Outstanding Achievement Award
Quantex pioneering technology is changing the game across multiple sectors
In this issue of Food & Drink Matters we are pleased to announce Quantex as the recipient of our Outstanding Achievement Award after an exceptional year that has been full of change. Benefiting from a ‘one company’, collaborative culture, Quantex has been integrating with sister brands in Germany, laying the foundations for rapid growth in 2023 and beyond.
Quantex offers off-the-shelf, recyclable pumps with varying flow-rate ranges that are used to transfer or dispense food & beverages in both retail, food service and industrial settings. These game-changing pumps enable an exceptionally hygienic, accurate and drip-free dispense whilst eliminating cleaning, calibration and cross contamination, reducing downtime due to product changeovers. In 2021, Quantex was acquired by PSG, an operating company of Dover Corporation and now sits alongside 13 other pump and flow measurement brands.
The technology’s unique features also benefit other markets. For example, to develop its growth within the biopharmaceutical industry, Quantex has partnered with PSG Biotech’s pump brand, Quattroflow. PSG Biotech launched on the 31st of March, 2023, as an expansion of PSG’s portfolio of biotechnology flow control solutions. To have Quattroflow and Quantex – two leading pump brands of PSG working in collaboration will change the game when it comes to Quattroflow’s market leading position in the biopharma sector. The Quattroflow team is currently working to ensure that the Quantex technology meets the required biopharma regulations and will later this year be announcing the launch of their new line of pumps that will be called the Quattroflow QB range. The QB pumps are set to offer game-changing solutions to low flow and microdosing biopharma applications in smaller scale upstream, laboratory and cell and gene therapy areas.
Director of Marketing, Gillian Harding-Moore also shared some more exciting company changes, “Perhaps the biggest change that happened in 2022 was the move of our Head Office to Duisburg in Germany, joining our PSG sister brands: Quattroflow, Almatec and Hydro, making future collaboration even easier. At this established and
quality-assured facility, we have more resources and manufacturing facilities, including 380msq of ISO 7 certified clean room facilities.”
Having doubled pump production from 2021-2022 through increased manufacturing, Quantex is eager to continue growing into the future with a further automated assembly line planned for the Bag-inBox pumps, where it is expected that the pump production capability will triple this year.
Quantex is rapidly moving forward with exciting, purposeful rebranding for a new sector, exponential manufacturing figures, an incredible 100% growth in turnover during 2022, all alongside retaining its harmonious collaborative culture.
Quantex’s technology holds 128 global patents and is the cutting-edge provider of recyclable pump technology. What makes it so unique is that instead of the pump being attached to fixed equipment, it comprises a part of the liquid packaging creating a fully integrated fluid delivery packaging system.
The pump (along with the bag, pouch or bottle) is clipped into a motor drive, allowing the liquid to be dispensed accurately, at different flow rates to suit a variety of fluid transfer requirements. Once the liquid supply is depleted, the customer replaces the bag with a corresponding new bag and pump, as Gillian illustrates,
“Quantex Pumps are for single-pack-use and, therefore provide a particularly hygienic solution, especially with possible aseptic and sterile versions of the pumps. Cleaning is eliminated since no product travels through the fixed machine and calibration is not necessary since the pump is continuously replaced. In addition, multiple products can be swapped in and out of the same channels with no cross-contamination.
A further advantage is that the cost and footprint of the dispensing equipment is greatly reduced – due to the simplicity, compact size and wide availability of the mechanics required to drive the pump.
Furthermore, high vacuum capability means selfpriming, better bag evacuation/less waste, and highly viscous fluids can be pumped successfully. Usability is improved by the reverse cycling of the pumps allowing the dispenser to suck the product back in to eliminate drips and provide a clean dispense.
Ultimately, if brands can create higher concentrations their products, our dilution pumps will enable them to take water out of the distribution channel, saving shipping costs and carbon emissions.”
Sustainability and cost-cutting are current priorities for many companies around the world and Quantex pumps help reduce expensive, rising shipping costs, offsetting carbon emissions by transporting less water, herby minimising product shelf-space requirements.
Quantex has been busy refining these existing, excellent pumps even further, as Gillian explains,
“We have a number of exciting new products in the pipeline for 2023, including our new High-Speed Eco Pumps. These use air pressure to activate the diaphragm and seal the pumps instead of a silicone spring, so they are more easily recycled, and can run almost three times as fast as our standard or high-pressure pumps. We are also working on new, easy-to-use Evaluation kits and pump driver technology which is primarily designed to help our OEM customers evaluate and integrate our pumps
into their equipment more swiftly.”
The future looks bright for Quantex with exciting progressive projects planned as Gillian demonstrates,
“Over the next few years, Quantex will be supporting its Bulk Dispense Refill OEM customers (creating systems for consumers to refill reusable bottles and save single use plastic waste) to develop and establish an optimum, standardised platform for retailers, combining optimised user-experience with IoT technology, with streamlined supply chain and shop-floor maintenance.
We will be growing our Industrial applications, where our pumps are used to reduce downtime for cleaning and maintenance in manufacturing lines.” For more information, please see below. T +49 (2065) 89205-0

MMELLOW is a state of mind, especially when you eat healthy. We are a Bulgarian brand founded in 2021 with the idea to provide a fresh look at the usually boring yet incredibly diverse food category of Cheese.

Myth, a drink that thinks outside of the bottle
My vision for Myth was to create a spirit style drink which could be the base of a simple serve or a more elaborate cocktail. I wanted to elevate a mocktail, a term which I particularly dislike as it suggests a child’s drink or something less than real, into a sober serve, relevant to the time and occasion it is being offered. I explored several options searching for a great flavour profile, versatility, fun and colour! It quite soon became apparent that Malibu was the epitome of this for me, holidays and sun-drenched beaches, sun downers and sandy toes. I wanted to translate this holiday vibe into a bottle and I believe myself and my
team have achieved just that.
Sunny days don’t last forever so when warm nights in by the fire began to call I wanted an expression of this for my glass to. Myth Dark Spiced is the perfect blend for a classic mix of cola or ginger or a bold adventure into an Espresso based cocktail. However you find your perfect serve lets raise a glass to friends and smiles.

Pizza is one of the most profitable casual food offerings for cafes and pubs, however more recently its become a trendy “gourmet casual” food, with higher expectations from consumers.
Without stating the obvious, there are two big challenges to putting a genuinely high-end pizza offering on the menu.
1. The need of skilled staff to prepare, stretch and cook the pizza authentically and
2. The cost (and space) of the oven and equipment required to make it great.

Popcorn Kitchen, a one-stop shop for ‘fine snacking’ joy

In truth, popcorn is again the ascendancy, thanks to small batch, hand-popped operations like Popcorn Kitchen that has succeeded both domestically and overseas in raising the bar for sublime flavoured popcorn and stylish gifting.

Sustainable Oat Drink Company Of The Month
Dairy-free oat milk
In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we have featured Brose as our Sustainable Oat Drink Company of the Month.
It’s boom time for oat milk in the UK with sales topping £146m in 2020 and predicted to eclipse total sales of all other non-dairy milks by 2030. Leading the charge north of the Border is Brose – the first and still the only dairy alternative to be made in Scotland with 100% Scottish oats.
From small beginnings, the East Lothian outfit is selling its brands of Original Style Brose and Barista Style Brose to cafés and restaurants, catering companies, tourist attractions, retail outlets and even forward-thinking dairies (who are recognising that cows’ milk is losing market share, and that nearly a third of UK adults are choosing plant-based options instead). Brose recently started supplying Scottish Government locations across the country, and won a silver medal at the Scottish Retail Food & Drink Awards.
All of this is perhaps hardly surprising when you consider Scotland’s relationship with oats (and we don’t just mean the kilted hunk on the front of the porridge oats packet). There is no better place in the world to grow oats than the east coast of Scotland, with its fertile soils, unique climate and famous sea haar. For hundreds of years, the farmers on this land sustained themselves through the long working days with a mix of oats and spring water called ‘brose’. According to legend, brose even sent the armies of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace into battle.
Today, the ‘Braveheart’ is Brose CEO Josh Barton and the challenge comes not from the English but from Sweden, and the world’s leading brand of oat milk. “We established Brose in 2019 because we thought
it made no sense that so much of a drink that was practically invented in Scotland should be imported,” said Josh. “Over time, we developed a product that was smooth, creamy and nutritious – all the qualities demanded by consumers and baristas alike. The response has been amazing.”
Josh says that oat milk is just the start, with other products in the pipeline, such as ice cream, yoghurt and cheese. Brose have also successfully trialled products that use the ‘oaty’ by-product from the oat-milk process. However, Josh and his Brose team are also driven by a greater purpose – to operate with a social and environmental conscience in ways that create local jobs, help combat climate change and support people in need. “We only use oats from farmers we know, supporting the growth and capability of Scottish agriculture, and raising awareness of mental health challenges within farming,”
Food & Drink Products & Services
he said. “We’re also committed to offering employment and training opportunities to young people regardless of gender, disability or social background, and to using sustainable packaging.” Brose comes in glass bottles that can be returned and re-used.
These are exciting times for Brose, but success brings its challenges. A new production facility is planned for East Lothian to increase capacity to at least 100,000 litres per week and serve a growing market. To that end, Brose will be launching a crowd-funding campaign later in 2023 to secure the investment required to scale-up. Josh added: “We believe Brose is unique among other oat milk companies because it was founded by individuals with expertise and a proven background in agriculture, food production, entrepreneurship and social change, who are all driven by common goals to produce a superior product at a competitive price, and deliver a return for investors.”
Lofty ambitions, no doubt, but clearly achievable for a team that lives and breathes every day under the company slogan ‘Genuine Scottish Goodness’.

Discover the power of Gellert Freeze Dryers for reliable and scalable food production
Are you a food manufacturer searching for a dependable and scalable freeze drying solution for regulated food production?
Look no further than Gellert freeze dryers from Biopharma Group!
In a rapidly growing freeze-dried product market, both manufacturers and consumers are recognizing the exceptional benefits of this
process. By minimizing or eliminating the need for cold chain handling, Gellert freeze dryers can significantly reduce transportation and storage costs. Moreover, the lightweight nature of freezedried material compared to frozen or refrigerated products further contributes to cost savings. But that's not all – freeze-dried products not only require less energy and cost to store, they also retain the biological benefits and flavours of the
raw ingredients, whilst extending their shelf life. Gellert freeze dryers provide a controlled and repeatable method of in-situ freeze drying directly on the shelves. This ensures that the product maintains its shape, structure, and nutritional value throughout the process. Gellert understands the importance of scalability, user requirements, and operational ease, which is why they have
developed a range of freeze dryers that are versatile and highly sought-after in the industry.
One of the standout features of Gellert equipment is AutoDry. This intuitive feature allows users to input their desired temperature differential between the product, sample, and shelves. The AutoDry feedback mechanism then optimizes the drying cycles to achieve the optimised results. Additionally, Gellert freeze dryers offer the option to construct the chamber, condenser, shelves, and shelf stack from 316L stainless steel for maximum product contact. For larger equipment, a hybrid cooling system is available, utilizing defrosted water by re-heating it through the freeze dryer compressors, thereby saving both energy and costs.
Gellert freeze dryers find their applications in a wide range of industries, including:
• Smart Foods: Explore the possibilities of freeze-dried supplements and nutraceuticals.
• Food and Beverages: Enhance the quality and flavour of food and beverage products.
• Dairy Products: Preserve the freshness and nutritional content of dairy products, ensuring they remain at their best for extended periods.
• Fruits and Vegetables: Retain the natural colours, flavours, and nutrients of fruits and vegetables, delivering a farm-fresh experience year-round.
