CHEF LISA G. BROOKS

Growing up, Lisa spent every Sunday alongside her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, cooking traditional southern meals for her entire extended family. Even before she could reach the stove, she was snapping beans, shucking corn and even plucking chickens.

Growing up in the South, family holidays were a pretty big deal, and my fondest memories center around being surrounded by family. Food, the centerpiece of the holiday, was a group effort. Every family member would bring their signature dish; easy recipes with simple ingredients, and little focus on presentation. There was no social media back then, so no one worried about capturing the perfect photo. Instead, it was all about enjoying good food and each other!

Knowing her true purpose in life was to be in the kitchen, Lisa went on to earn a Culinary Arts degree and is now a Certified Culinarian, specializing in Southern American, Cajun, Creole, Caribbean, Paleo, and Gluten-Free cooking. Winner of the Moore & Van

Allen MVA Bowl Cooking Competition in 2012, and numerous Food Lion Chef Challenges, Lisa has recently appeared on the Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games and makes regular appearances on local stations WCNC Charlotte Today and WBTV.

My Aunt Ida’s cornbread dressing and giblet gravy is a Thanksgiving staple and an all-time favorite of mine that I make to this day. The key to the perfect bite is a forkful of turkey, with a little dressing and gravy, and a dab of sweet and tangy cranberry sauce. Heavenly aromas, contagious laughter and conversations filled the house, and it truly became a place of love, acceptance, and ease. That still is the best part of the holiday for me! Please enjoy this recipe from my family to yours!

“In the South, to prepare a meal for someone is to show them love. I prepare real food for real people— the trendy, health-conscious and just plain ol’ country folk.” — LISA G. BROOKS
