ic . ab r tim be rf i worked on the TIMBERFABRIC. it’s a project of architecture to weave timber wood in a certain way that it can be used as wall.

22

«I like the orange thread as detail.»

23

i tried different way to wave and make the joints.

«I wouldn’t do it with transparent paper, the shiny surface is good for the waves of the shapes.»

then i tried with different papers.

and i made tours and balza frame to make them hang by themselves.

24

25

CONCLUSION it was a very nice adventure. I liked experimenting, and the way we had to focus on the «beauty» of the end product.

this third trimester was special by the amount of things I did in parallel of the lessons.

in g. in t pr 3d

for the solidworks lessons, we had to do first some researches about 3d printing and 3d printed textile / flexible structure, in order to print one for oureslf. We experimented then the software solidworks to make a 3d drawing and then print it.

AN ND H T D MA HE M R O IN G GU OT S thursday was the day of trialserrors-feedbacks. they explained us to learn to make mistake and accept it, which is a part of the design process.

g. er ju n m is t for the first class, Margot told us about Jung’s theory. we had to find which kind of caracter we are, and make a drawing about that.

first, i thought i was a intuitive extravert. but the way i did the first drawing made quite clear that i was an introvert thinker, because i was thinking so much before to do the drawing. and finally i find it quite obvious.

«I’m an intuitive extravert.» «You’re an introvert thinker.» 38

Theo teached us how to draw with a clear line. we used a large pencil and first we did a very thin line to do the first sketch, and then with a lot of pressure and by turning slowly the pencil we drew a very dark line.

if wh you ic w h ou on ld e wo be ul a p d it rdo be cu ? t,

for Mingus we had to make in cardboard the product that we would be. ater days of thinking, i had choosen to stay on my first idea; to «be» a wheel. and then we had to draw it with Theo’s clear line technique.

de th sig at n m a ak pr e od us uc la t ug h.

40

i decided to take as start point the fact that i’m hypercative and i h ave difficulties to stop doing things. so i invented a kind of bracelet with a clock mecanism that after a while a metal piece slap your hands to make you stop doing things.

we drew our «funny» product with a clear line with some context. from this drawing we had to choose a part that we would make in 3d in white cardboard. i really enjoyed doing this 3d collage for the freedom of imagination we needed.

then we had to make a 2d collage from a view of our 3d collage. i tried two times before making something that i could be satisfied of it, and finally i’m still not. i was not very motivated, because i began to be tired of the lessons, we didn’t really get the purpose of this collage, and we didn’t work on it anymore.

so finally i was inspired by an article about teenagers who had trouble in managing their pocket money and always ask more. so i thought to make a money box wich can make visual the amount of money they have and make them aware of how they spend it.

43

i was first inspired by an article about pills that you can swallow in order that your smartphone recognize you. but my ideas were way too much conceptual for this project.

m

in

we had to read the times news paper to be inspired by the articles for a product design project.

my first idea was a set of different size of money boxes that teenagers could customize themselves with stickers to understand and see their priorities in spending their pocket money.

44

but because they was too much practical issues for this product, and after being very stucked on this project during two weeks, i chosed to take some distance and take this project a bit less ÂŤessentialÂť.

so i made a balance/money box with elastics pockets for your coins that make you decide how and why you want to spend you rmoney.

I WAS COMPLETELY IN MY PANIC ZONE.

what do i want to spend my leftover coins for? - beers - condoms - lollipops - frikandel

for a day, margo let us free to design our lesson. so we all went outside by ÂŤtripleÂť and we asked people what they wanted to do, and we had to join them in doing it. with dounja and tim, we asked a guy who was working and he said to us to go to the beach for him. so we found a park and chilled on sun.

CONCLUSION i think it is because of a time problem, but i had been a bit disappointed by these lessons. i actually think that they have very intersting points of view, and much more to share with us, but we never went very deep in anything.

i was inspired by the movie «the sound of insects» which is actually a lecture of a notebook from a «mummy». it is a man who decided to let him die, and went in the forest, with a plastic cover, a pillow, a radio, some book and his notebook, and just waited to die by not nourishing himslef. in his notebook he wrote everything he experienced during these three months he wait for his last breath. but nothing was written about himself. nothing about his previous life, his job, his family, or any friends. anything related to his social life. his body was found by a hunter, and it was an extremly dry body, like a mummy, and between his legs was his notebook. i’m fascinated by this story, and i wanted to work on this kind of wan-

derers, living the society and their social life to go wandering with only required equipments: a sleeping space, something to have some food, and some clothing. so i worked on a foldable tent that you can carry in your backpack.

53

i wanted to reproduce my color samples in XXL, so instead of thread, i would use ropes, and the cardboard would be the tent textile.

LEARNING GOALS THIRD TRIMESTER 1. COMPARE YOUR PROCESS BOOK WITH THE EVALUATION OF THE LAST TRIMESTER FORMS. A. WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES? I was happy and they were happy. B. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES? I felt guilty to not follow all the rules of each assignments, but they didn’t care. C. WHAT ARE YOUR ‘BLIND SPOTS’? WHAT DO OTHERS NOTICE WHAT YOU DID NOT NOTICE YOURSELF? Liesbeth made me realised that I was always using the same style and tool for all my drawings, and that I should experiment more things with which I feel not so comfortable with. I found it very true and interesting.

58

2. HAVE A LOOK AT YOUR LEARNING GOALS OF THE 2ND TRIMESTER. DID YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS? (IF NOT, RECONSTRUCT WHY AND WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?) 1/ TAKE IT EASY = achieved I was much more relaxed this trimester and I noticed that it made the trimester even more good. I liked every project, worked on it in a very personal way, just as I wanted to do it, and to resume, I just had fun. I just liked even more working. Because it was not about doing something good, but just enjoying doing it. 2/ FEEL FREE IN THE METHODIC LESSONS = achieved As methodic lesson, I was taking about Johannes and Shirley’s lessons who already have a clear idea of the result they want. I felt bad in this frame because I didn’t feel free to appropriate to me the subjects. In the second trimester, there were other methodic lessons as the friday; Liesbeth, Wim and Wielfred, where I felt in fact very good. I felt much more sharing my projects with them than rejecting their borders. But I think it’s also because they are very nice persons. They let me a lot of freedom in every project. I even sometimes «deformed» the assignment to do what ever I wanted with it. It is why I also think that I did it too much. It was great to do it, and great to notice that they let me this freedom, but I’m afraid to lose in a way a part of the learning process, if I go to far in my own project. So I should still do the same, but in being aware of the purpose of the assi gnment. 3/ THINK MORE IN 3D = still need to be achieved Well, this trimester was not the best one to try to achieved this goal because it was much more about thinking and writing. The third one seems to be the perfect one to use more my hands and try to think more in 3D. 4/ DO RESEARCH ABOUT DESIGNERS I LIKE = almost achieved At the end of the trimester I collected project I like in a booklet to look which kind of pro ject I like, which kind of design I like, and also which kind of projects I would like to work on later. This research can help me as well to find the good department for next year. And it make more clear in my head who I am as a designer. 3. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN DURING THIS TRIMESTER? FORMULATE 4 LEARNING GOALS + HOW YOU WILL ACHIEVE THESE GOALS. 1/ WORK AND THINK MORE IN 3D I know that I’m working mostly in 2D. I work a lot about composition and graphic aesthetic. But as a designer I’m lacking a 3D approach. I have to work on it, to feel more comfor table with it and have more «3D» creativity. / To achieve this goal I should work more with my hands, make more researches directly

in 3D, manual things, to make my mind more use to deal with 3D shapes. 2/ «GO OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE» Now that I feel quite comfortable in my work and that I know myself much more, I would like for this last trimester of first year try new things. I feel comfortable in doing assign- ments by a very personal way, but I would like to take the risk to go out of what I’m always doing, or go even deeper in it. It will make the trimester much more exciting, and it’s gonna be good for my creativity as well. / To achieve this goal I will experiment tools or materials I’m not use to deal with, in order to take more risk to do something bad, or not perfect. (it will also be a good exercice for my perfectionnism) 3/ MAKE MY WORK PERSONAL, BUT STILL IN BEING AWARE OF THE PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT As I said previously, I noticed last trimester that sometimes I’m going to far in appropri ting to me the projects. For few projects, I took it so personnal that I was not answering to the assignment anymore. It never was a problem for the teachers because the results was convincing, but I found out that when I’m doing that, I’m then missing the whole learning process of the assignment. / To achieve this goal I look a bit more at of the purpose of the assignment, understand the learnings points, and respect them during the whole project.

4. PLACE A SUMMARY OF THE ANSWERS ON THE QUESTIONS ABOVE IN A TABLE (SEE BELOW) LEARNING GOALS

ACTIONS

MEASUREMENT

1/ WORK AND THINK MORE IN 3D

a/ do more manual things b/ do more research directly in 3D

a/ feel more comfortable with 3D b/ have 3D researches

2/ «GO OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE»

a/ experiment tools or materials I’m not used to use b/ taking the risk to do something bad, or not perfect

a/ see new things in my works b/ feel that I took risk, and see what is happening

3/ MAKE MY WORK PERSONAL, BUT STILL IN BEING AWARE OF THE PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

a/ look more at the learning goals of the assignments b/ respect them through the whole project

a/ see that I answer to the purpose of the assignment b/ see that the result is still very personal

4/ HAVE FUN AS I HAD WITH THE SECOND TRIMESTER

a/ be relax, don’t have too much a/ still so happy expectations from myself b/ still «in peace» with all the b/ take every assignment with a projects realized personal approach

59

4/ HAVE FUN AS I HAD WITH THE SECOND TRIMESTER I felt very much «in peace» with my work and my way of working this last trimester. I was not struggeling with myself anymore to try to follow my expectations (like in the first tri mester). I was just taking every assignment with a very personal approach. It means still being relax, take the time I need for it, doing my own personel projects in parallel, and taking the school work as personal projects.
