Surfing South by Andy

Parsons Beach

The South Coast has many locations suitable for surfing, from beginners through to the experienced. Autumn months and leading into winter produce the best waves, providing strong southerly swells and offshore winds. Places such as Waitpinga, Parsons and Petrel Cove are dangerous beaches to surf and only for the very experienced. Petrel Cove in particular has claimed a couple of swimmers lives due to strong currents and undertows known as “rips. Surfers use these rips

Knights Beach

while paddling their surfboards to get out the back beyond the breakers. Signage is posted advising of the dangers at particularly hazardous beaches. Middleton beaches are considered the safest platform for those wanting to learn and gain experience. Surf schools operate in the warmer months at Middleton and are run by licensed accredited surf coaches. If you want to learn how to surf, here are some surf school links where you can book lessons. www.danosurf.com.au www.surfandsun.com.au

GAME REVIEW by Keisha

MAFIA II Vito Scaletta, Mafia II’s conflicted leading man, does not lead an easy life. War, murder, and betrayal are common themes in his complex existence--the prices paid for booze, money, status, and sex. Like most aspiring made men, Vito knows the risks of his lifestyle, but the lure of earthly pleasures is too great to ignore. Mafia II, is also an earthly pleasure, as well as a delight that any fan of great storytelling will appreciate. The twisting narrative is almost certain to draw you in, and superb dialogue spoken by a talented voice cast brings the characters they portray to life. It’s easy to get drawn into this world of 40’s gangsters and their unique personalities, though there are a few oddities scattered about that may occasionally yank you back to reality. Most notably, Mafia II’s detailed open city is large with buildings but lacking in city life and side missions, giving you few reasons to explore it and providing precious little to do outside of the main story. Yet while Mafia II is not the fully featured open-world game it seems to be at a glance, the tremendous story, the fantastic action, and the lovely city overflowing with striking visual touches make for an exciting mob drama. The story kicks off in 1945, and you meet Vito Scaletta, the son of Italian immigrants who, along with his smart-mouthed best friend Joe, seeks out the fastest ticket to a big fortune. The duo starts small: a jewellery store heist, black-

market sales of gas coupons, working over some uncooperative dockworkers, and so on. Eventually, the stakes are raised, and Vito and Joe prove they’ve got the guts to whack a guy just because a Mafioso with the moolah tells them to. Vito’s occasionally stoic, occasionally fiery demeanour makes him an excellent leading man. He and his cohorts are not Italian caricatures, but are thoughtful and (yes) moral men who adhere to principles that may seem barbaric to most people but provide a strict ethical framework within “the family.” Mafia II never holds back when depicting this world’s everyday violence. Whether the murder is a cold-blooded, no-questions-asked assignment or a vicious execution driven by Vito’s seething rage, the killing is typically accompanied by copious spurts of blood and profane deathbed curses. Vito and Joe are showered with hedonistic rewards, alcohol, women, even houses and never delude themselves with a greater purpose. At one point, Vito reminds Joe why they do what they do: to have stuff. And you have to appreciate his honesty. But of course, a life of crime has consequences, and a few plot twists ensure that Vito is intimately aware of them. Allegiances change, true intentions are exposed, and eventually, the macho duo finds themselves in over their heads. The pressure builds in the

“You can either talk with your fists to get your own way or bring out the Tommy gun to do the talking for you.”

final chapter, only for a somewhat unfulfilling conclusion to turn down the heat. The ending is thematically consistent in a game that depicts a difficult lifestyle that comes with cruel consequences. Yet too many story threads and emotional strands go unresolved for the finale to feel particularly satisfying. The gameplay is quite satisfying, you can either talk with your fists to get your own way or bring out the Tommy gun to do the talking for you. The vast use of old school guns and classy cars is enough to keep anyone from leaving, needless to say it does get repetitive after a while, shoot this, shoot that, but the story is so fantastic it drives the game. Every line of dialogue sounds authentic while always progressing the story and characters, there are also subtle yet satisfying nods to the audience breaking the 4th wall yet keeping us engaged in the story. It is a shame there wasn’t more to do in the open world of this game, you get very few collectables such as; movie posters, playboy magazines, wanted posters, paintings and so on but collecting them was just to have them, there’s no special reward for doing it. Mafia II is a classy open world game with a visually impressive city yet not enough to do inside the city when not on a story mission, I say play this game for the brilliantly told story narrated by the games protagonist Vito Scaletta and enjoy as his story unfolds.

Mafia II Glitches and Bugs Guide:

3D Vision not working in Mafia II If you are facing issues like unreadable text and black textures when you try to play Mafia II using 3D vision. You need to install NVidia 3D vision drivers on top of your video card drivers. You can download and install them from here. Black Lines, Graphical Error If you are seeing black lines in certain parts of the game during different missions, make sure your 10

video card is not overheated. Verify and check the temperature of your video card and system using any system monitor tool. ATI Graphics Issues If you are facing certain graphic glitches, you can resolve this by running the game windowed. You can change it in the game options menu of the game. Mafia II PhysX Performance Tweaks You can remove the apex clothing simulation effects from the game to increase the frame rates and overall game performance. Follow the guide, I posted earlier for Mafia II PhysX Fix. Start up Black Screen and Mode not supported Error When the game loads, the monitor stays black with the floating box saying “mode not supported”. You can hear the game sound and game content loading, but can’t get to display the video. It happens because of the video settings, and you need to follow the steps below to get it to work. Start up the Mafia II and then DON’T TOUCH the mouse again until the monitor problem is fixed and follow these steps. • Listen for the nVidia logo to start and press Esc. • Another video will play, press Esc again. • Wait a second and press Esc once more. • You are now at the Main Menu. Press Down arrow 1 time and press Enter. (you should hear click sounds as you navigate the menus). • You are in Options Menu. Press Down arrow 2 times and Enter. • You are in Video Options. Press Down arrow 1 time, then hold down the Left arrow until the click sounds stop.

• • •

You are going to change the Resolution to 640×480. Press Esc, wait for a second and press Enter, wait 5 more seconds and press Enter again and wait 5 more seconds If you did everything right then you should now see the Video Options menu on screen. Use the arrow keys or mouse to set the resolution up to 1024×768 (or whatever your monitor can handle), press Esc, press Enter to accept, wait for screen change and press Enter to accept again. Now fully exit the game, restart the game and hope that it saved your changes.

Courtesy adair0061@ Steam Forums. Mafia II Doesn’t Start Update your video card drivers, and directX. Also download the specified version of PhysX and run the game in compatibility mode as admin. Make sure the game is not broken by running an integrity check via Steam. Quitting Game, Changes Monitor Settings CTRL+ALT+DEL to reset everything.

Mafia II Graphics Errors Black lines across the map, black NPC’s, and weird shadows? You may need to do the following, for any chance to resolve these issues. • Update your drivers. • Update NVidia Physix. • Verify integrity of the demo’s cache. • Disable any additional settings in ATI’s Catalyst Control Center or Nvidia equivalent. • Turn down settings to minimum and work your way up.

MAFIA III?

Yes, they have announced a MAFIA III, there is no release date yet unfortunately. Fortunately they have announced it for all systems: Xbox one, PS4 and PC. There isn’t much to go on at the moment so this is all the info I could gather. The game takes place in the year of 1968, and revolves around Lincoln Clay, a bi-racial orphan and Vietnam veteran. As an orphan, he is constantly looking for a family, until he joins the armed forces and fights in the Vietnam War. He returns to New Orleans, after the war and he joins “The Black Mob”. After surviving a murder attempt by the Italian Mob, Clay attempts to start his own criminal organization and get revenge. Clay is aided by three allies, which include Cassandra, Burke, and Vito Scaletta.

Steam Error “The Game is Unavailable” Log out of steam, and restart it. Mafia II Brightness Bug Fix Right click on Mafia 2.exe and go to its properties. Click on the compatibility tab and check “disable desktop composition”, save the changes.

Some Food Facts • Freezing - how long things last vary, but it is important for goods to be sealed in air tight bags or containers, date labelled, and remove as much air as possible. • Keep oldest things toward front to use up first • Avocado keep best when cut by covering with foil or lemon juice • Potatoes once peeled best kept in water • Keeping fruit and vegetables separate in the fridge assists in shelf life, as a chemical reaction can occur when they share containers

which reduces shelf life, also best to keep in sealed bags away from fridge air (freezer bags are inexpensive and work well) • Breads bought ahead of time can be kept for much longer in fridge or freezer • Eggs should be kept cool in the fridge as they have a porous shell and can contain Salmonella in a raw state • Always a good idea to store meats on bottom shelf to stop raw juices contaminating other foods • If you use a water filter jug, safest to put it in the fridge as humidity and light can cause problems • Corn is actually best steamed in its own natural covering. FAQ’s • What’s the difference between “use by” and “best before” Best before means it’s in peak condition before that date but still safe after that date, and quite often retains peak condition for a while longer. use by considered only safe before that date and is best to stick to that as some changes to the product you may not pick up through sight or smell. Also after use by cannot be legally sold .(common sense should prevail in most cases and always check packaging condition when purchasing) • How can I keep the frozen and cold stuff OK till I get home? Buy your cold and frozen stuff last /use an insulated bag in transport or put bags down behind front seat out of the sun • How do I know if my fridge is working properly? Use a fridge thermometer, they are cheap and will keep your food safe and save you costs on running fridge • How can I make sure I don’t buy more than I need and blow the budget? Check catalogues Make a list, don’t shop hungry.

A SELECTION OF NEW MOVIERELEASES2015 by Blake and Sean

Upcoming Movies out this year Sicario (2015)

Denis Villeneuve has associated himself with seriously good scripts since he broke through with his own story, the Oscar nominated “Incendies.” This story, which treads familiar terrain along the U.S./ Mexico border, comes from Taylor Sheridan, perhaps best known as Deputy Hale on “Sons of Anarchy,” whose other current screenplay is being made by director David Mackenzie.

Mississippi Grind (2015)

Stonewall (2015)

A young man’s political awakening and coming of age during the days and weeks leading up to the Stonewall Riots.

Ride Along 2 (2015)

As his wedding day approaches, Ben heads to Miami with his soon-to-be brother-in-law James to bring down a drug dealer who’s supplying the dealers of Atlanta with product.

Down on his luck and facing financial hardship, Gerry teams up with younger charismatic poker player, Curtis, in an attempt to change his luck. The two set off on a road trip through the South with visions of winning back what’s been lost.

The Peanuts Movie (2015)

A walk in the woods (2015)

The Night Before (2015)

This broad comedy feels like it could have been made any time between the mid-1980s and today. This sort of zero-surprises storytelling either really works for you or it doesn’t.

The Martian (2015)

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet.

Snoopy embarks upon his greatest mission as he and his team take to the skies to pursue their archnemesis, while his best pal Charlie Brown begins his own epic quest back home.

In New York City for their annual tradition of Christmas Eve debauchery, three lifelong best friends set out to find the Holy Grail of Christmas parties since their yearly reunion might be coming to an end.

The Good Dinosaur (2015)

An epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. Visit www.wallis.com.au for session times

Hair & Style The key to finding the right hairstyle for you is to know your face shape. Finding a hairstyle that not only matches your face shape, but also complements it as well.

by Ethan HEART FACE SHAPE

Heart shaped faces are wider at the forehead with narrow pointed chins. Generally longer hairstyles are well suited as short hair will only accentuate the wider forehead. Some recommended hairstyles Pushed back, side parted long, long fringes, undercut.

OVAL FACE SHAPE

Broad forehead and a rounded chin and jaw. Well balanced proportions that allows a variety of hairstyles with different shapes and lengths. Some recommended hairstyles. Long and pushed back, short side parted, bangs up, undercut.

SQUARE FACE SHAPE

Square proportions with straight and wide jaw. Short, tight and masculine haircut will match this shape. Some recommended hairstyles. Undercut, side part slicked back (short), crew cut, faux hawk.

OBLONG FACE SHAPE

ROUND FACE SHAPE

A face with rounder proportions with the width almost the same as the height. Choose haircuts with a bit of length and volume on the top to add some height to your face. Avoid hair coming onto face as it will make it look rounder. Some recommended hairstyles Undercut, faux hawk with shorter sides, quiff, fringe up.

TRIANGULAR FACE SHAPE

Narrow forehead and wide jaw. Opt for haircuts that add volume and width to the forehead, avoid too short on the sides. Some recommended hairstyles Fringe up, side parted, side fringe or bangs.

MEN

Long chin that gives the illusion of a narrow face. Allow the hair to fall onto the face to reduce the appearance of a longer face. Keep the shape well balanced with neither too short on the sides nor too long on the top. Some recommended hairstyles Side parted, crew cut, side fringe, fringe up.

HAIR DRESSERS OF THE FLEURIEU PENINSULA

These faces have a narrow chin and forehead but prominent cheekbones. Longer hair generally goes well with this face. Alternatively you can add volume by going for a fringe or layered cut. Avoid getting sides too tight.

Hair Today

by Keisha Paint by number

OLOURS of 2015

Embrace the red trend this summer or opt for a new tone of brown or blonde. Whatever you decide - something fun and different before the holidays hit!

24 24

Paint by Numbers Flecks of vibrant red and orange are splashed throughout a deep Merlot base in this amazing look. Best Skin Tone and Hair Type: These bright red colours are cut to a deeper base which makes it more wearable by more skin types. Dark to lighter skin tones can definitely dry out this colour. Natural colours that fall in the middle of the scale (medium brown) are good candidates for this colour. Tip: Using a shampoo and/or conditioner that has red pigment in it is a great idea. It will deposit some dyes onto strands in between colour appointments and keep the colour vibrant and lasting longer. Colour Blocking This edgy haircut boasts a golden beige Mohawk that is sharply contrasted by a cool, dark brown shade on the sides. Best Skin Tone and Hair Type: Darker or olive skin tones can handle the duality of warmth in this look. Natural medium brown shades that can hold up to a strong bleach will work for this look. Tip: Using a shine spray is a great way to chase dullness away that can often happen to highly bleached strands. Fringe Benefits This light caramel brown colour is given a fun surprise around the face with a deep red that peeks out from beneath. Best Skin Tone and Hair Type: All skin tones can pull off this pretty and warm colour combo. It would be easiest to achieve on virgin hair of a medium brown shade. Tip: This is a great example of how important it is to talk about how your cut and colour will work together to create the final result.

Blonde Swirl Take a look at this pale blonde creation. Strands are lifted to a light vanilla shade that looks so creamy you could eat it. Best Skin Tone and Hair Type: Blonde hair tends to look best on lighter skin tones. This warmer shade allows it to work well with warmer hues of pigment. Medium to light coloured blondes will be able to get the right amount of lift for this look. Tip: It’s not always necessary to match your brow colour to your hair colour, but lightening them up a shade or two can help melt the two colours closer together and create a more harmonious look. Divine Dimension This beautiful blonde colour has a hint of beige, gold and light caramel hues. The array of colour gives it tones of lovely dimension. Fame is so Fleeting by Jillian

It was a cool clear morning, I was

snuggled up in bed and thought I had better stop being lazy and get up! Rolled out of bed, threw on some clothes, boots, gloves and helmet and headed down to Strath. No breakfast, no morning ablutions and I didn’t even brush my hair “helmet will squash it down and I probably won’t see anyone I know.” First stop the local servo to top up the fuel and check the tyre pressure. Got that done and was heading back to the bike after paying for the fuel and about 6 bikes pulled up. Quite a serious looking bunch with all the gear plus heaps of dust and dirt. Large KTM’s and BMW’s mainly and a Yamaha Sertao pulled up for fuel. I’d been thinking about getting another bike for a while and was interested in the Sertao – I don’t usually approach strangers but thought “what the hell” and wandered over and asked the rider how he liked his and could I have a closer look? We had a chat about the bike and then he said “Charley Boorman is over there – want to meet him?” I said “No way – Charley Boorman doesn’t want to meet me” and he said “Yes he does, he likes to meet other riders.” I said “See that little Yammy 250 over there with the milk crate strapped on the back? that’s mine, believe me - Charley Boorman doesn’t want to meet me!”

Charley with Jillian

He called Charley Boorman over and introduced us. I am not impressed by fame or fortune so how come I turned into a prattling fool? We chatted for a while about their ride to Strathalbyn via Sydney, Melbourne etc, and the different trips we had been on and the Sertao bloke took a couple of photos with my phone and his camera. As we said our goodbye’s and nice to meet you’s the Sertao bloke said he was a photographer for “Australian Road Rider magazine” and to watch out for my photo in a future issue.

“Charley Boorman doesn’t want to meet me!”

I got back on my bike and headed home again – forgetting the groceries I went down for, and YAAHOOOing to myself all the way back to Macclesfield. Excitedly jumped off my bike, yanked my helmet off and frantically rang my friend. Got his answering machine so left a message, hung up then started texting all my friends. “OMG OMG I just met Charley Boorman and talked to him and got a photo!! OMG OMG!!” No-one replied for ages and all texted back pretty much the same thing. “Wow that’s great who is Charley Boorman?.” The friend I rang called back and he got cranky – my message was so loud garbled he thought there had been an accident. Another friend, a Harley fanatic, texted “But Charley doesn’t ride a Harley.” Talk about a high being quickly deflated! I soon stopped telling everyone who’d listen I had a new BBF. I think that was after someone said ‘It’s BFF you idiot” I started checking all the Australian Road Rider magazines, waiting in anticipation for each new monthly issue to arrive at the local newsagent. Nothing for about 3 months so I gave up. Then one day a few more months later after I had finally got over it all and had nearly forgotten, I casually flicked through an ARR mag and my flicking through stopped at a page with a little picture on it –IT WAS ME! Bought a copy of the mag (-err, more than one copy actually). The lady at the counter tried to show some interest when I showed her the page with me and Charley Boorman. So did my local butcher, the two ladies at the library and the check- out chick at the supermarket. Fame is indeed so fleeting!

Fleurieu Fishing Hotspots by Todd

Snapper Season Closure All anglers are reminded that there is a complete state-wide ban on catching snapper for the full month of November until December 15. This allows the migration of the species and breeding in this time, and there are severe penalties from the department of fisheries for offenders not complying with the season closure.

FISHING Wirrina Cove Breakwater Species to be caught

Silver Drummer, Zebra Fish, Silver Travelly, Tommy Ruff, Aussie Salmon, Bream, Rock Cod, Sweep and Mullet.

Cape Jervis Jetty

This spot is starting to fire for the annual Squid run, with plenty of medium-sized Squid arriving during early mornings and late afternoons. Salmon and Trout have been caught near the breakwater and anglers are also finding big Tommy Ruffs at night.

28

Rapid Bay Jetty

Fishing here is back to normal after kingfish sightings last week; tommies have been the main catch along the jetty, with the best catches at dusk. Garfish and Squid have been caught near the end of the jetty. Two anglers caught Snook close to their Squid floats with cast lures during an early morning session.

The Bluff Jetty

A very busy spot with Squid fishers at present and there have been good catches made of medium sized Squid near one kilogram in buckets along the jetty. Both float and bottom rigs are working equally at present it seems and there have been bonus catches of a few Snook from the eastern end of the jetty from the weed area and Sprat and Tommy Ruffs when they arrive.

Goolwa Beach

Mulloway action has continued from the bigger gutters east of the car park and some hookups have landed sixkilogram beauties. The shallower gutters are providing some healthy catches of Salmon, Trout, and Mullet.

BOATING Inner/Outer Reefs

Both structures were popular last weekend with boaties having a last fling for a Snapper before the season closure, but from reports the elusive pinkies were not caught. There were big Snook and several Nanagai caught from this area and Salmon were found near Broady’s patch.

Murray Mouth

Boaties are hooking Mulloway by drifting baits inside the mouth and trolling is having catches of big Salmon and Trout near the entrance. Bream are being caught from the edge of the channel from coral areas.

Encounter Bay

Tommy Ruffs have been caught in good numbers from the area out from the boat channel towards Wright Island. Near the Bluff beach boaties have drifted over the weed to catch Squid and Snook in good numbers.

Interview Tips

Questions and Possible Answers Tell me about yourself

Although it might be tempting to share a list of your most compelling qualifications for the job at hand, a more low-key approach will probably help you to develop a personal rapport with your interviewer. Try starting out by sharing some personal interests which don’t relate directly to your work. Examples might include a hobby which you are passionate about like painting, astronomy, chess, golf, skiing, tennis, or photography. Interests like long distance running or yoga which help to represent your healthy, energetic side are worth mentioning. Pursuits like being an avid reader or solving crossword puzzles or brain teasers will help to showcase your intellectual leaning. Interests like golf, tennis, and gourmet food might have some value if you would be entertaining clients in your new job. Volunteer work will demonstrate the seriousness of your character and commitment to the welfare of your community. Interactive roles like general volunteering, museum tour guide, fundraiser, or at a social club will help show your comfort with engaging others.

What are your greatest strengths?

May seem like one of the easier interview questions you’ll be asked, but it is also one of the most important. The interviewer wants to know if your strengths align with the needs of the company and the qualifications for the particular job. Asking this question helps the employer decide whether or not you are the strongest applicant for the position. When you are asked questions about your strengths, it’s important to discuss attributes that will qualify you for the specific job and set you apart from the other candidates.

How to Answer What is Your Greatest Strength?

The best way to respond is to describe the skills and experience that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. Be prepared to answer by making a list of the qualifications mentioned in the job posting. Then, make a list of your skills that match those listed. This list can include education or training, soft skills, hard skills, or past work experiences. Narrow your list of skills down to 3 - 5 particularly strong skills.

30

Examples of the best answers:

“I have an extremely strong work ethic. When I’m working on a project, I don’t want just to meet deadlines. Rather, I prefer to complete the project well ahead of schedule. Last year, I even earned a bonus for completing my three most recent reports one week ahead of time.” “I pride myself on my customer service skills and my ability to resolve what could be difficult situations. With five years of experience as a customer service associate, I have learned to effectively understand and resolve customer issues. On a related note, I also have strong communication skills, which helps me work well with customers, team members, and executives. I am known for being an effective team member with a talent for giving presentations.”

Answers to Avoid

This is not the time to be humble. While you do not want to exaggerate your strengths, you should be comfortable articulating what makes you an ideal candidate. Creating a list of your strengths (as they relate to the job) will help you answer this question with confidence. On the other hand, you do not want to answer this question with a laundry list of vague strengths. Stay focused on a couple key strengths that relate directly to the position and the company. A focused, relevant answer with one or two examples will impress your interviewer.

How to Answer What is Your Greatest Weakness?

Even though the question is about weaknesses, your answer should always be framed around positive aspects of your skills and abilities as an employee

Discuss Nonessential Skills

One approach to answering this question is to analyse the key skills and strengths required for the position you are interviewing for and then come up with an honest shortcoming which is not essential for success in that job. For example, if you are applying for a nursing job, you might share that you are not particularly adept at conducting group presentations. In this case it will be critical to underscore your strength in one-on-one communication with patients, while providing an example of your difficulty with presentations to large groups.

by Keisha Mention Skills You Have Improved

Another option is to discuss skills that you have improved upon during your previous job, so you are showing the interviewer that you can make improvements when necessary. You can sketch for employers your initial level of functioning, discuss the steps you have taken to improve this area, and then reference your current, improved level of skill. If you use this strategy be sure not to mention anything that you improved upon that is related to the job for which you are interviewing. You don’t want your qualifications for the job to be questioned.

Examples of the best answers:

“Being organized wasn’t my strongest point, but I implemented a time management system that really helped my organization skills.”

have made me an effective project manager on dozens of projects over the past five years. Because this job involves a lot of team projects, I know that my communication and interpersonal skills and make me an ideal fit for the position.”

Do you work well with others?

It’s important to think about how you work with others because even if your role in the company doesn’t require a lot of communication, you will still need to deal with those you work with in a professional and personable manner. Regardless of the job, employers don’t want to hire people who are difficult to get along with because that will cause workplace issues and conflicts. It can make sense to screen out applicants who don’t have strong people skills, even if they have solid qualifications for the job

Expanding Your Response

“I used to wait until the last minute to set appointments for the coming week, but I realized that scheduling in advance makes much more sense.”

Candidates often say that they “enjoy working with people” but don’t explain or expand upon their response. Anyone can say that they work well with people, but it’s important to show hiring managers how you accomplish it. What do you do that makes you a good people person at work? That’s what the interviewer wants to know. What’s important is to show your prospective employer the skills you have and how you have used them in the workplace, using real-life examples.

How Will Your Greatest Strength Help You Perform?

Some examples of what your people skills might allow you to do:

Be specific. Explain exactly how your strengths will help you effectively complete the duties listed in the job description. Tie your strength to the particular job description to demonstrate why you are an ideal candidate. Even though the question refers to the job for which you are applying, you can also use examples from past positions to demonstrate the strengths you will bring to the company.

• Assess the skills, personality traits and work ethic of candidates by applying behavioural interviewing techniques. • Motivate subordinates to improve performance. • Lead group discussions in a way that incorporates diverse views and draws consensus. • Develop a comfortable rapport with clients and determine their preferences for products and services. • Listen actively and emphatically to encourage clients to share their feelings and problems. • Create and delivering training sessions which engage the audience in active learning. • Provide difficult news to employees targeted for layoffs. • Mediate conflicts between employees or with clients. • Resolve customer complaints with patience and creativity.

“I like to make sure that my work is perfect, so I tend to perhaps spend a little too much time checking it. However, I’ve come to a good balance by setting up a system to ensure everything is done correctly the first time.”

An effective answer to this question will demonstrate how your greatest strength will make you an asset to the company. When you respond, relate your strengths to both the job description and your ability to perform at work.

Example question

“My greatest strength is my ability to work effectively with many different people. My strong communication skills

31

Interview Tips cont. Sample Answers

“Working on a number of team projects has allowed me to develop my ability to communicate clearly with others, and mediate conflicts between team members. For example, on a recent project, two of my teammates were having trouble coming to an agreement about how to approach an element of the project. I listened to each of their concerns, and got everyone to sit down and come up with a solution that would make everyone happy. Because of my ability to listen to others and mediate conflict, we were able to finish our project ahead of schedule, and even received commendation from our employer for the high quality of our project.” “I am a patient listener and clear communicator, which is essential to being a sales representative. Customers often call me with complaints and concerns, and my ability to patiently listen and empathize makes them feel appreciated. I then work with them to come up with creative solutions to their problems. I believe my people skills are the reason I won best sales representative three years in a row at my previous company.”

Do you take your work home with you?

is a tricky question; be ready. Employers ask this question for a variety of reasons. They might want to know that you are organized and can do all of your work in the allotted time. They also might want to make sure you maintain a decent work-life balance (which many employers believe will ultimately make you a happier and thus better, employee). However, some employers really are looking for people who make work the center of their lives, and want to assess just how dedicated to the job you will be. Answering this question therefore requires you to know a bit about the particular company and job.

How to Answer

Before you answer, think about the company culture. If you know the employer values work-life balance or time management skills, you will want to emphasize your ability to complete your work during work hours so that you can focus on family or other activities after work. If the company requires employees to put in lots of extra hours, and emphasizes the need for dedication and passion in the workplace, you may want to stress your willingness to bring projects home in order to ensure high quality work.

32

If you aren’t sure of what the employer is looking for, the safest way to answer is to emphasize your organizational skills while also saying that, when necessary, you will take work home with you. This question also provides you an opportunity to think about whether or not the job is the right fit for you. If the employer clearly wants to you take work home with you on a regular basis, but you value your free time, you may want to consider not taking the job. Instead, look for jobs at companies that value work-life balance.

Sample Answers

“I am extremely organized and skilled at budgeting my time. When I begin a project, I create a timeline for myself that allows me to complete the assignment in a timely manner without taking my work home. However, I understand that sometimes timelines change or issues come up, and I am always willing to take work home with me when tasked. “When I begin a new project, I often choose to take work home with me in order to ensure that I complete the project for my client on time. However, maintaining regular time to spend with my family is very important to me, so I try to limit this to the early stages of projects and to urgent matters.”

How do you handle stress? One common interview question is “How do you handle stress?” The interviewer does not want to hear that you never get stressed; after all, everyone feels stress at one time or another at work. Instead, the employer wants to see if you know how pressure affects you, and how you manage it. How to Answer Interview Questions About Stress

The best way to answer this question is to give an example of how you have handled stress in a previous job. That way, the interviewer can get a clear picture of how well you work in stressful situations. Avoid mentioning a situation when you put yourself in a needlessly stressful situation. For example, do not share a story about a time when you were stressed because you procrastinated and had to finish a project quickly. Focus on a time that you were given a difficult task or a multiple assignments, and you rose to the occasion.

You also should not focus too much on how stressed out you felt. While you should certainly admit that stress happens, emphasize on how you deal with the stress, rather than how it bothered you.

Examples of the Best Answers

“Pressure is very important to me. Good pressure, such as having a lot of assignments to work on, or an upcoming deadline, helps me to stay motivated and productive. Of course, there are times when too much pressure can lead to stress; however, I am very skilled at balancing multiple projects and meeting deadlines, which prevents me from feeling stressed often. For example, I once had three large projects due in the same week, which was a lot of pressure. However, because I created a schedule that detailed how I would break down each project into small assignments, I completed all three projects ahead of time, and avoided unnecessary stress.”

What motivates you?

There isn’t a right or wrong answer to interview questions about what motivates you. The interviewer is trying to understand the key to your being successful in the job you are interviewing for. This question also shows the interviewer whether or not you are aware of what you value in a job and work environment.

How to Prepare

This question can catch people off guard because it requires you to think critically about yourself. Therefore, it is a good idea to prepare for this question ahead of time. Before the interview, look at your resume. Make a list of the tasks you most enjoyed and felt motivated doing. Circle the tasks that relate to the job for which you are applying. You can also think about the kind of work environment you work best in. For example, think about whether you prefer to work in a collaborative environment, or in a more isolated setting.

How to Answer

A good answer to this question will provide an honest assessment of what motivates you, but is still connected to the particular job and/or company. Your answer should also include examples from previous jobs or volunteer work to demonstrate your experience.

Sample Answers

“I was responsible for several projects where I directed development teams and implemented repeatable processes. The teams achieved 100% on-time delivery

of software products. I was motivated both by the challenge of finishing the projects ahead of schedule and by managing the teams that achieved our goals.” “I have always wanted to ensure that my company’s clients get the best customer service I can provide. I’ve always felt that it’s important, both to me personally, and for the company and the clients, to provide a positive customer experience. My drive to constantly develop my customer service skills is the reason I earned top sales at my company two quarters in a row.”

What do you find are the most difficult decisions to make?

There are no right or wrong answers to questions like “What are the most difficult decisions you have to make?” or “Have you ever had to make a really tough decision at work?” Employers simply want to see that, when you face a difficult decision or situation, you are able to handle it. They also want to see what kind of decisions you consider difficult. These are behavioural interview questions designed to discover how you handled certain situations. The logic behind these types of questions is that how you behaved in the past is a predictor of what you will do in the future.

How to Respond to Interview Questions About Difficult Decisions

When answering these questions, give one or two concrete examples of difficult situations you have actually faced at work. Then discuss what decisions you had to make to remedy the situations. You want to come across as confident and capable of making big decisions. Avoid examples that make you seem indecisive or uncertain. Also keep your answers positive (“Even though it was a difficult decision to lay off that particular employee, I did so in an extremely professional manner, and this decision ultimately led to improvements in efficiency and productivity throughout our department”). Whatever answer you give, be specific. Itemize what you did and how you did it. The best way to prepare for questions where you will need to recall events and actions is to refresh your memory. Skim through your resume and reflect on some special situations you have dealt with or projects you have worked on.

Fleurieu

Black Shouldered Kite

100% Nature by Andy The Fleurieu Peninsula is home to a very diverse range of wildlife, and much of it on the very doorsteps of our homes. Spring is an extremely busy time with much of the areas birdlife building nests and readying to produce offspring, reptiles coming out of hibernation and Whales leaving the coast, continuing their annual migration.

The Hooded Plover is an endangered species, with only 20 breeding pairs left on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Hoodies, as they are affectionately referred to, live their entire life on open beaches foraging, feeding and nesting, making them very vulnerable to not only birds of prey, but also human contact. Walking dogs off of leads is said to be a major threat to the Hoodies on our beaches as their nesting area’s are easily accessible being on the ground.

Hooded Plover

Unique to the area are of course are The Southern Right Whales - Called Southern ‘’Right’’ Whales because they were thought to be the right Whales to hunt for their high oil content. Since protection laws were introduced some 25 years ago, The Southern Right Whales have returned in ever increasing numbers, being a great draw card for locals and tourists to the region.

The Motorcycle Diaries A true story of life on the road. by Gary

Early on a Wednesday morning was

the agreed time of departure from a mates place. Time for a much needed break from the usual organized chaos of my work and family life. TIME FOR ME TO HIT THE ROAD - YEEHAA!

So bright eyed and bushy bearded, I arrived at my mates place to find him nursing a Hangover and still trying to pack his bike, with his missus giving him a piece of her mind in colourfully acidic bogan vernacular, about his and my nocturnal activities the previous night. I kicked down the side stand ,took off my gloves and helmet, and jumped off my bike and went to help my mate get his act together and distract his missus long enough so he could finish packing the bike and escape the aforementioned tongue lashing he was enduring. The poor sod, I thought. Anyway, as luck would have it as we finally got to depart - his bike refused to start. Seems that when he got home in the more than happy state of mind he was in he’d forgotten to turn of the ignition which in turn had flattened the battery and had fused the points together as well, meaning no spark = no go. The old Harley was dead in the driveway and the fun of diagnosing the fault began. First we put the battery on charge with the aid of a neighbour’s charger. After a much needed coffee with a Nip of Bundy or “Qld Diesel” purely for medicinal purposes. As this miraculous cure all took effect we tried to start the bike but to no avail. OK next step has it got fuel? Yes! Fuel tap on? Yes! Are the spark plugs sparking NO! Ok plugs out clean gap. Still no spark? Broken wire to coil? NO! A simple way to test this is a 12v light bulb tester a must for any toolkit. I thought must be the points, so I took the points cover off and with a screwdriver I found the fault, the points had welded themselves together due to the ignition being left on all night causing the battery to drain flat. As the points don’t open and close there’s no power pulse to the coil thus no spark to the plugs simple. New bikes now have solid state ignition modules so this does not happen anymore. So with a quick file and a reset of the gap, we’d solved the lack of spark problem, and as we’d kept charging the battery, the bike fired into life and all was good and the sigh of relief from my mate meant that his stress level had gone down considerably and we were ready for the off. With big grins we finally depart and head for the hills of the southern vales south of Adelaide, traffic conditions were

36

A 1980 FLH Harley Davidson, similar to the writers’

good as most traffic was heading into Adelaide and we were travelling in the opposite direction towards Mt Compass. Riding in the crisp morning air through the vineyards and rolling countryside of the Fleurieu Peninsula, my Bike feels great as the motor purrs effortlessly as the kilometres fly by. We soon arrived in Strathalbyn, a great place to stop on a weekend sojourn with its many pubs and café’s which greet you with a friendly smile and a warm tasty snack on the banks of the Angus river. But not today, for it’s onward to Adventures as they say as we power on towards Wellington via Langhorne Creek, passing Lake Alexandrina where the mighty Murray River empties out forming the start of the world heritage listed Coorong National Park. Pelicans circle overhead and the Paddle steamers of yesteryear, which once crossed this vast lake to deliver their cargoes of grain, wool and livestock to the docks and railheads of Goolwa, slowly paddle by. We finally arrived at the Wellington Ferry or Punt crossing to find it making its way slowly across the river, as we waited, we sat on our bikes enjoying the warmth of the sun and laughed about the events of the previous night’s activities and my mates forgetfulness. The story of how he was nearly bikeless was that he’d tried to sneak home and went into stealth mode by turning the motor of via the kill switch and rolled down the street so as not to wake the missus, but she was up waiting for him anyway. Bugger! And he’d must have forgot to turn off the main dash switch. Ah! The truth comes out! I was still laughing when the ferry arrived with a sound clunk and whirr as it clamped on to its docking platform. After the vehicles had disembarked the ferry operator motioned for us to come aboard and we rolled down the ramp onto the deck for our two minute river cruise/crossing. As we started to dock on the other side, and partly due to the strong cross wind the ferry jolted suddenly causing me to lose my balance and I almost dropped my bike onto the deck much to the amusement of my mate. The operator swings open the

Mt Compass

Strathalbyn

gates and with a cheerful wave to the ferryman we set of for Tailem bend a short ride where we turn off the Dukes Highway onto the Mallee Highway and head towards the towns of Lameroo/Pinnaroo. Now this is a great stretch of road as it meanders through the Mallee scrub that line the road corridor with large open fields of grain growing and sheep/cattle are grazing. After about 90 min riding we arrive in Lameroo, time to refuel and stretch the legs un- numb the bum and check over the bike tighten some loose straps on our swags. With that done we head off to Pinnaroo to meet up with the rest of our mates, by lunch time as was agreed by phone conversation a week prior. Upon arriving in Pinnaroo at our mutual friends place we find he’s as crook as a dog in bed with a rather nasty flu and the others had pulled out last minute due to work & family matters. Bugger!!! So much for communication! Anyway I wasn’t going to let this put a dampener on my trip, so with a quick discussion with my mate we decided to head for Ouyen, refuel and continue onto Balranald via Tooleybuc There we’ll refuel again and if time still permitted continue on to Hay. As this part of our trip went smoothly and without incident we arrived in Hay in the early evening and decided to stay at the local hotel. Nothing like a hot shower, a good steak dinner, a few rums and humorous chats with the local fellas over a friendly game of eight ball to round out our first day on the road. After a blissful night sleep with the human sawmill in the next bed, “a claimed side effect of too much rum”! A beautiful sunny morning greeted us so after a hearty breakfast with a strong cup of coffee, a quick check over, and the bikes refuelled we set of across the Hay plains towards Narrandera a beautiful spot on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River Capt. Charles Sturt and his party stopped and camped here as he explored and charted our great inland waterways. So there we are cruzin’ down the highway sounding like a low flying DC10, when suddenly lots of revs and no drive? A Quick look in the mirror confirmed my suspicions a broken drive chain - damn! I watch as the chain slithers of the road, into the sandy

Lake Alexandrina

rubble of the road shoulder, like a snake. I quickly shut down the engine and braked hard coming to a stop a safe distance off the road. My mate pulls up having recovered my chain from the road side verge, stating that was lucky to find it amongst the brush on the verge. A check of the bike revealed no real damage to sprocket or adjusters. A link plate had failed and the chain had simply rolled of the sprockets onto the road “Very Lucky” as some times the chain can become wrapped around the rear sprocket jamming the wheel causing you to slide of the road into the scrub at 110kph or wrap around the front sprocket, jam the trans and destroy the gearbox and inner primary cases, both very messy scenario’s. Lady luck was still with me as you can fix a chain not a belt on the roadside. With 120km still to Narrandera or 85+km back to Hay, 280C, no shade, and nothing but barren open paddock for as far as the eye can see in any direction, not the best spot to break down. At this time I cannot stress the importance of carrying some water and a compact tool kit that’s easy to access and a few spare parts - (i.e. nuts, bolts, electrical wire & connectors, assorted spanners, screwdrivers, pliers, chain breaker, joining links + Lube, small files, and a rag.) All of which are about to come in very handy. So to the task at hand, wiping down the chain with the rag to remove as much of the sandy crud from the chain as possible, inspecting the chain for any possible damage. Now to remove the broken link plates, using the flat file remove the burr on the pin ends that holds the chain links together on one side so the chain breaker can push the pin through the link plate, leaving the inner roller link exposed. Repeat on the other end and spray some lube just to flush any remaining grit from chain. Now tying a piece of electrical wire to one end of chain will enable you to pull the chain over the front sprocket with the gearbox in neutral a major time saving, ensure that the chain clears the swing arm pivot top and bottom, then by removing the chain guard you can place the chain over the

37 37

Wagga Wagga

rear sprocket so now the chain can be joined at the bottom. Before joining chain you must undo the rear wheel axle bolt and back off the tensioners on either side to allow the chain to join easily. Having done all this, pretension chain so it now has the correct free play, about 11/2” is usually correct. Spin wheel to ensure there is no tight spots, spray liberally with chain lube and then tighten axle Bolt/Nut , lock off tensioner nuts, and refit chain guard. Pack up your tools and we are good to go. This all took me about 40 mins to complete, not a bad effort I thought. Now by this time the weather had taken a turn for the worst and a huge thunder storm was now closing in so the mad race for Narrandera was on, so we took off setting a reasonable pace, so as to try and out run the storm. 50kms out from Narrandera we ran into a thick fog like misty rain that cuts visibility down to 50m and being stuck behind a group of semitrailers made life a little bit soggy to say the least. Thankfully, I had put my wet weather gear on earlier and was now enjoying the benefits of having done so. As all I could see was the red glow of taillights from the semi in front of me, I was blissfully unaware of the hidden evil that was in that red glow in the foggy conditions until I finally was in a position to past the semi that it became a lot clearer. It appears that the driver had an encounter with a mob of Kangaroos and cleaned a few of them up which had now somehow lodged themselves in the suspension and axle assembly of the small wheeled furniture Pantech trailer in front of me and were being ground into mincemeat as he drove down the road. So as I came up to overtake I was inevitably covered in a spray of roo mince and fur as I passed the trailer. I thought to myself “lucky” none of the roo carcasses had come loose and tumbled out onto the road in front of me as there would have been nowhere to go, another very messy scenario. As riding into a roo carcass on the road would be like hitting a log. Arriving in Narrandera we finally pulled into a service station. One look at each other and the state we were in, we both burst out laughing as we were both covered, helmet to toe in roo mince and fur. A very feral look I must say, as we refuelled we chatted and joked about our close encounter when a bus load of Japanese tourists arrived, and we suddenly wound up being the focus of a rather strange photo shoot as they milled about us, Camera’s Flashing away, muttering in their Japanese/English accents - “AHHH BIKIES!” and some stuff we just couldn’t understand. Upon entering the Roadhouse to pay for the fuel the operator was still laughing about what had just happened to us and also remarked on how very strange it all was, like

That dog that sat.....

a candid camera sketch or comedy show. Suddenly they all piled in to the restaurant for dinner and the bus driver motioned for us to join them. He said that he’d never seen anything like it before either and that the tourists wanted to shout us dinner. Who’d have thought that we’d end up in this situation. And we were still covered in gore! With that we decided to clean ourselves up a bit and join our new found hosts for a meal in the road house diner. This became an interesting encounter with everyone swapping stories of their and our lives, adventures once we found a way around the sometimes difficult language barriers but in all some very funny and animated stories. Time was getting away from us as we still had to set up a camp for the night we bid our hosts a happy and enjoyable tour of our great country. We set off to find a suitable spot on the river bank to camp before it got too dark. As by sheer chance, we’d stumbled onto the very spot the Explorer Captain Charles Sturt had landed with his party of men many years before us, a sheltered sandy river bank just off the main road into Narrandera looking back at the new road bridge crossing the river. Good enough for him, great for us I thought to myself. So with a good meal under our belts and a warm fire going, a few bevvies and it was time for a well-earned sleep. We awoke to the sounds of the kookaburras laughing and water birds fluttering around. When suddenly a motor cross bike came flying out of a walking trail beside our tent nearly landing on it, and hitting our bikes as well, much to the riders surprise, as ours at the time. A quick nod from the wide eyed rider and he quickly disappeared in a cloud of dust. Must have been late for work and no time to chat, or that he’d just landed in our camp to find two hairy bikers who weren’t amused by this intrusion and wasn’t hanging around to find out if we were upset about it. Probably a good move as my mate was none too impressed. Especially by the knobbly tyre track across his swag, that he’d only gotten out of moments before. Any way a cup of coffee with a kick and some bacon and eggs, we broke camp and headed off toward Wagga Wagga to refuel and ride over the range to get on the Hume Highway and the road to Gundagai, where the dog sits on that Tuckerbox. From there onto Yass, and then down to Canberra. Riding on the Hume Highway was like riding on a concrete carpet compared to some of the roads that we’d just travelled on and the kilometres just flew by effortlessly. We stopped at the Dog on the Tuckerbox memorial. A unique Aussie story of the Drovers dog left to guard the tuck box while the drover went about his duties, but the drover was killed

tragically and the dog never left his duty of guarding the tucker box for weeks still waiting for his master’s return. Even when tempted by strangers with food and water the dog never left his charge eventually dying still guarding the tucker box. A loyal dog indeed. With that classic tale of loyalty from man’s best friend in our minds we set of again towards Yass then down to Canberra, where we arrived late afternoon. After a quick ride around the city sights, and chats with some very friendly locals, as our cash flow didn’t allow for resort style accommodation, we agreed to head for Cotter River Reserve SW of Canberra for a free campsite. Riding out of Canberra past the Mt. Stromlo Observatory and into the great forests of pine and eucalyptus that surround the nation’s capital we found a beautiful spot on the banks of the Cotter river where water flowed over some massive granite boulders waterfalling some six metres to join again the river below, a very beautiful and scenic place. Sadly, most of this area was completely destroyed by the Bush fires around Canberra a few years back and the little kiosk that used to service visitors has never been rebuilt. A shame really as it was a very peaceful setting, where families once came in the summer time to play and swim in the cool waters of the river. Now to the reason that we rode half way across the country was to attend the gathering that is the Summer Nats! A great weekend of hot cars, bikes, scantily clad women, burnout competitions, street racing and the PARTIES!!! - YEEHAA! Now this is not some radical ruckus by louts and hooligans running amuck in the streets of our nation’s capital with high speed car chases by the Law. No, no, it’s a very well organized event catering to the motoring enthusiast and giving them a chance to showcase their expertise in customising, engineering and applying fantastic paintwork to some of the finest examples of motoring history in Australia. Winning an award here is one of the most highly prized accolades courted by motor sport enthusiast’s Australia-wide. With Best in Show being the most coveted, next to the Burnout King crown. All of which is done under very strict controlled condition by the organizers, police and regulatory associations. Ensuring that everyone is in a safe and pleasurable environment for people and families with kids given the chance to see, feel and participate in all events. With the Grand Cruise through the main streets of Canberra up to Parliament House and then to the Show Grounds, the streets are lined with thousands of people just to watch the spectacle of

The Summer Nats, Canberra

the cavalcade of colours and vehicles of all types and styles from all over this great country. A must do for any diehard fan of motorcar, bikes etc. Put it on ya bucket list! You won’t be disappointed! The event also has many vendors with some very inventive gadgets and impressive displays of what is available to make your motor perform, look, sound and drive better. With so much to see and watch you can get a bit overwhelmed with the spectacle of it all. The Burnout competitions at the raceway are something not to be missed, with some very impressive horsepower being let loose until the tyres pop, with points awarded for the most flamboyant display and the most amount of rubber smoke generated - of course, it’s a rev heads dream. After two days of motoring action our times of ” Fun in the Sun” were over, and so began our return ride back home. This was just as much fun as the trip over, but not as eventful, none the less a great experience for myself and colleague and has remained to this day one of my favourite escapades among many other mad moments and misadventures on the road. So get out there and get those “knees in the breeze”, and some “bugs in ya teeth”. (You can always tell a happy biker by the amount of bugs in his teeth!) because he’s still smiling even when it’s raining. And don’t be scared to say G’day to those travelling by motorcycle on our highways and byways as we love our families and live life just as much as others do, except we ride a bike. You never know that gnarly old biker you meet at some distant road house

in the middle of nowhere might just be ME. So happy trails folks and go and enjoy our great country and all it has to offer those that are prepared to seek it. Yours adventurously, A gnarly old biker!

The SteamRanger Heritage Railway by Jordan and Andy

S

outh Australia’s first railway was the opening of the Goolwa to Port Elliot in1854. It was later extended to Victor Harbor. This line was used to move freight between the shallow-draft vessels navigating the Murray, and coastal and oceangoing vessels, without either having to traverse the narrow and shallow mouth of the river with unpredictable currents. The line was extended northwards to Strathalbyn in 1869, the connection from Adelaide reaching the town in 1884 and completing the link. Until 1884, trains south of Strathalbyn were hauled by horse power, but between 1883 and 1885 the section to Currency Creek was rebuilt to steam railway standards. Australian National operated freight services on the Strathalbyn to Victor section and were withdrawn in 1980 and on the rest of the line from October 1987. In the early 1980s, Australian National announced that the Victor Harbor line would close, despite enormous public opposition. Several factors were noted for the closure of the line, such as a deteriorating track condition, a long time consuming route compared with a more direct road journey, and declining passenger numbers. Over 50,000 return journeys were made during 1977/78, but this dropped to only around 16,000 in 1982/83. The last Australian National passenger service ran on 30 April 1984, when locomotive 942

hauled seven steel cars from Adelaide to Victor Harbor and return. Despite many people using the service in the last few months leading into the closure, it wasn’t enough for passenger services to be retained. The SteamRanger Tourist Railway established in 1986 to operate tourist trains on the line. In late 1989, Australian National declared the Mount Barker Junction-Strathalbyn section unsafe and Steamranger operated services from Adelaide to Strathalbyn were cancelled. That section was eventually renewed during 199091 with funding from the State Government. First the lines beyond Strathalbyn were operated by SteamRanger train crews, later extending to the entire line In 1995 gauge conversion of the Adelaide to Wolseley line isolated the broad gauge Victor Harbor line off from the rest of the network, and volunteers took full responsibility for maintaining the track from Mount Barker Junction to Victor. The Cockle Train operates year-round between Goolwa and Victor Harbor. It operates with a steam locomotive in school holidays, and historic diesel locomotives or railcars other weekends. The Southern Encounter runs from Mount Barker to Victor Harbor during winter, utilising most of the remaining broad gauge branch from the main Adelaide to Melbourne line.

A Healthy Aquarium Tropical aquariums make a great home feature and are relatively easy to set up… Once you have all the equipment necessary, maintaining a healthy eco system for tropical fish is about water temperature and PH balance. The ideal temperature for most freshwater tropical fish is between 24.4 to 26.6 degrees Celsius. The ideal pH level of freshwater aquariums is between 6.5 and 7.5

Tanking Up by Jordan

Changing Aquarium Water There are numerous reasons for changing aquarium water on a regular basis. The main reason is to keep your fish healthy. During the aquarium nitrogen cycle, nitrates naturally build up in the water column. Regular aquarium water changes help removes these pollutants. During your aquarium water change, you will be removing dissolved toxins such as nitrates, ammonia, nitrite, and phosphates. A build-up of nitrates and other toxins will lower your aquarium water hardness, so it is so important to change aquarium water often you will also be removing solid waste such as fish waste and uneaten food. Removing toxins from the aquarium water column is vital to promote healthy fish and a clean tank. Required Equipment : • Tank • Heater • Filter • Air pump • Light • Bottle of tap water conditioner • Bottle of quick start • Gravel and or rocks • Driftwood • Plants

Dennis Potter the British playright and dramatist, and a lifelong sufferer, wrote the Singing Detective for the BBC in 1987. It starred Michael Gambon and had the skin condition, Psoriasis as one of the major themes.

Michael Gambon

My Crisis with Psoriasis? I have been living with the skin condition Psoriasis for six years now. It has its ups and downs, but I’m just glad

that I was not born back in the day when I would have been classed as having leprosy, and would have been send to the Valley of the Lepers (see Ben-Hur), but to tell you the truth not much had changed, people still point and give you dirty looks, saying stuff under their breath. Now, I’m not the type of person that would care, but after six years it starts to get a bit wearing. All I’m saying is - ask me what it is, I would be more than happy to tell you what it is, just don’t assume you know what it is, I’ve been told that I look like I have been burned alive, or injured in a chemical spill, or I don’t shower, but the one that upsets me the most is, people think I have aids, (not funny at all) so just ask me what it is. I mean I could cut sick and say F this and F that and go and F yourself ’s, but does that make me any better than the people that stop and stare and make ill informed assumptions? - NO SIREE, it’s like a double edge sword, dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t A history of this condition is thought to have been fist described in Ancient Rome by Cornelius Celsius. It was first classified by English physician Robert Willan. The British dermatologist Thomas Bateman describes a possible link between Psoriasis and arthritic symptoms in 1813. The history of Psoriasis is littered with treatments of dubious effectiveness and high toxicity. In the 18th and 19th centuries, “Fowler’s Solution” which contains a poisonous and carcinogenic arsenic compound, was used by dermatologists as a treatment for Psoriasis. Mercury was also used for Psoriasis treatment during this same time period. Sulphur, Iodine, Phenol were also common treatments. It was incorrectly believed that Psoriasis was an infectious disease. Hold on a minute, where they trying to find a effective treatment or kill people? Coal tars were widely used with ultraviolet light irradiation as a topical treatment approach in the

by LR

early 1900s. During the same period, Psoriatic Arthritis cases were treated with intravenously administered gold preparation in the same manner as Rheumatoid Arthritis. All of these treatments have been replaced with modern topical and systemic therapies. It became known as Willan’s Leper in the late 18th century when English dermatologists Robert Willan and Thomas Bateman differentiated it from other skin diseases. Leprosy, they said is distinguished by the regular, circular form patches, while Psoriasis is always irregular. Willan was educated at Sedbergh School, and received his M.D. from Edinburgh University in 1780. From 1781 he practised medicine in Darlington and then moved to London in 1783 as physician to the new Carey Street Public Dispensary, where he remained until 1803 teaching alongside Thomas Bateman. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1809. Willan identified two categories: Leprosy Graecorum and Psora Leprosy. Now there are five types of Psoriasis that can occur on the scalp, nails, also your joints, and uncomfortable other places on the body. The five types of psoriasis include the following;

Dr Robert Willan

PLAQUE PSORIASIS: this type of Psoriasis causes raised, red patches on the skin. Skin patches can be itchy and painful. GUTTATE PSORIASIS: this type of Psoriasis can start in childhood or young adulthood. INVERSE PSORIASIS: this type of Psoriasis causes red lesions in body folds. PUSTULAR PSORIASIS: this type causes white blisters and red skin. ERYTHRODERMIC PSORIASIS: this rare inflammatory type of Psoriasis can develop over the entire body, symptoms include widespread redness, pain and sever itching.

For the people out there who are wondering if Psoriasis is contagious….NO, its not, however, the condition may run in families, risk factors for developing the condition include: a family history having it, a viral or bacterial infection, obesity, smoking, uncontrolled stress and the use of certain medications, such as those to treat Bipolar Disorder and high blood pressure. Doctors and researchers have been unable to identify a singular cause for Psoriasis but studies suggest it is an autoimmune disease, the result of our immune system’s overreaction to stimuli. AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER: a condition in which your immune system – the part that keeps you healthy gets confused, attacking and destroying healthy tissue by mistake. TRIGGERS: substances or circumstances that can make Psoriasis or Psoriatic Arthritis worse. (Psoriatic Arthritis can make your joints turn into hardened cement). FLARE-UPS: times when Psoriasis becomes increasingly worse. So in a properly-functioning immune system, T-cells a kind of white blood cell protect the body against infection and disease by identifying and destroying foreign material. With psoriasis, T-cells overreact, mistaking healthy skin cells for dangerous ones, and set off a chain of unneeded immune system responses. Certain factors may trigger Psoriasis in a person who has never had symptoms before. And for those who have psoriasis, these same factors can trigger another bout with the disease. TRIGGERS: bacterial or viral infections, such as strep throat or the common cold, diseases that weaken your immune system, such as Aids or Cancer, emotional stress, dry air or dry skin (particularly from changes in weather) some medicines, such as beta-blockers, lithium, and anti-malaria drugs, cuts, bites or burns on the skin. Too little sunlight or too much (sunburn) increased alcohol intake and smoking.

44

OK then let’s just take a moment and let that sink in … not that much to go, just a little bit more…. So go and make yourself a cup of tea and a sandwich and let’s continue. In the last few paragraphs we are going to cover Psoriasis diagnosis, tests, treatments, medications, Psoriasis prevention, and society and culture.

First up Psoriasis diagnosis and tests. Psoriasis can mimic other skin conditions like ringworm and dermatitis. You’ll need to schedule an appointment with your local doctor or family doctor to confirm a diagnosis. About 95% percent of the time, doctors can diagnose the condition “by just by looking at your skin”, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. Doctors sometimes need to perform a skin biopsy (hurts like hell) to rule out other skin conditions, during a biopsy your doctor removes a piece of skin tissue and exams it under a microscope. For treatment, if you are diagnosed with psoriasis your doctor may refer you to a dermatologist. A dermatologist is a doctor who specializes in skin diseases, there’s no cure for Psoriasis. But with treatment you can reduce inflammation and skin irritation, so here are some treatment options if you have this condition. TOPICAL THERAPY: your doctor may prescribe creams or ointments for your skin or scalp, these can include: topical corticosteroid, vitamin D analogues, topical retinoid, salicylic acid and moisturizers. LIGHT THERAPY: this therapy exposes skin to natural or artificial ultraviolet light under medical supervision. This treatment helps slow the growth of new skin cells. Now if your psoriasis is severe or doesn’t respond to other treatments, your doctor may prescribe medications to suppress your immune system. Along with treatments recommended by your doctor, you can take other step to reduce symptoms. Oatmeal baths may soothe irritated, red skin. Applying moisturizer to dry, itchy skin immediately after a bath or shower can also reduce flare-ups. Psoriasis may also improve if you limit alcohol consumption and learn a way to manage stress, talk to your doctor about your treatment options. Prevention, this part annoyed me and got me somewhat irritated. Professionals give you all this information and tell you about various treatments, creams, ointments, lotions, etc, but there’s no way to prevent Psoriasis lesions from breaking out. You can reduce the impact of a flare-up by following a management plan and avoiding common triggers like stress and alcohol, but ultimately, Psoriasis is a lifelong condition. Talk to your doctor if you have symptoms

of Psoriasis or if the condition causes depression or mood problems. Psoriasis in society and culture, well then, the International Federation of Psoriasis Association (IFPA) is the global umbrella organization for nation and regional Psoriasis patient associations and also gathers the leading experts in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis research for scientific study every three years, the Psoriasis international network, a program of the Foundation RenĂŠ Touraine, gathers Dermatologists, Rheumatologists and other caregivers involved in the management of Psoriasis. Non-profit organizations the National Psoriasis Foundation in the United States, the Psoriasis Association in the United Kingdom and Psoriasis Australia offer advocacy and education about Psoriasis in their respective countries. Jay Hoad

Fiji born Didgeridoo artist and stringed instrument virtuoso, Jay Hoad has spent the last seven years touring the globe, travelling to the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Fiji, India, and North America learning about third world culture and every style of music he can sink his teeth into.

I think this album is by far the best work I have done to date, and coming from me that’s a big call as I am super critical of my own work and rarely give myself a pat on the back. It truly represents all aspects of what I have to offer and I feel it really captures the live sound of my show like never before. Working with Craig was an incredible experience; he brought out the best in me on every note. And with the evolving nature of music distribution, we really went to town on the artwork for this release as who knows how long physical CDs will still be available!” With many major festivals and venues booked around the world the future is looking bright. Jay will be doing a show in Fiji – Nov 07th Uprising Festival Pacific Harbour, then a string of shows in Victoria to finish of the year. The Art of Breaking At every party there would

always be those one or two dancers that would be keeping the party alive by the things they can do on the dance floor, Break-dancers or Bboys as they are properly called. Breaking or Bboying is a dance that originated from the Bronx, New York in the early seventies and has since then gone onto become a worldwide phenomenon. The Breaking scene in Australia continues to grow steadily as dance groups known as ‘’crews’’ host small, local competitions which tend to draw in a portion of the communities youth. The local competitions build much of the enthusiasm in the young people helping them to learn the dance and build their knowledge of the culture. There are many international competitions that come to Australia every year... Namely,

• Redbull Bc One

‘’without Breaking there is no Hip-hop’’

50

• Freestyle Session • R16 Korea

By Tobi

These competitions are qualifiers to allow either crew or individuals to compete for a title overseas. Whether the Bboy or Bgirl has ambitions to compete or whether they just dance for the love of it depends on the individual, either way it is able to help young people channel their energy into doing something positive and creative. The Bboys I know personally practice several nights per week, not including the times they practice elsewhere. What gives them their motivation is their love for the dance, while many have seen Breaking as being nothing more than a ‘’fad dance’’, they fail to understand that it is actually a foundational element of hip-hop culture. As one pioneer said in an interview... ‘’without Breaking there is no Hip-hop’’. The culture of Hip-hop isn’t likely to disappear anytime soon, so it will be that the dance will remain prevalent for the years to come. What once started in the streets if the Bronx, has gone onto spread across the world uniting people of all races, backgrounds’ and beliefs creating a sense of peace, love and unity as they are drawn to do what they love doing…. dancing.

The Bluff

By Todd

The Bluff, Encounter Bay

Also known as Rosetta Head, it is one of Victor Harbor’s most scenic sights. Geological Site

It’s hard to miss the Bluff when you arrive in Victor Harbor. It’s very prominent and can be seen from all over the area. The Bluff is also a famous geological landmark. The headland is granite that came from deep in the earth’s crust about 500 million years ago. The boulders that sit on top of the Bluff were carried there by ice and the smooth shape of the Bluff’s profile was also caused by ice erosion. Granite from West Island was used as the base and to build the steps for Adelaide’s Parliament House. West Island is now a protected wildlife habitat conservation area. Located nearby in the Inman Valley, is Glacier Rock, also another famous geological attraction. A visit to these sites is recommended so as to appreciate their origins close up.

Early Explorers

On top of the Bluff is a plaque that commemorates the encounter between Matthew Flinders and the French explorer Nicolas Baudin in 1802. The inscription reads, “In commemoration of the meeting near this bluff between HMS Investigator, Matthew Flinders who explored the coast of South Australia and M F Le Geographe, Nicolas Baudin, April 8, 1802. On board the Investigator was John Franklin the Arctic discoverer. These English and French explorers held friendly conference and Flinders named the place of meeting Encounter Bay.’”

History

there in 1863, but was abandoned a short time after. The shaft has been filled in, but is still visible today.

The Dreamtime

The Ngurunderri people also feature The Bluff in their Dreamtime stories. When Ngurunderi threw his club to the ground, the Bluff became the shape of the traditional fighting instrument.

The Walking Trail

The walking trail starts and ends in the car park. The track is reasonable, but can be steep and slippery in places. Good walking shoes are a must. As are binoculars and a camera, as the views from the top are stunning. There are 360 degree views of Victor Harbor, the amazing coastline in the opposite direction, and the might and beauty of Southern Ocean. If you travel to the area between May and October, it’s a perfect viewing spot for the Southern Right Whales which have returned to the area after being hunted almost to extinction. It’s also a great spot to see para gliders set off and sail over the coast. The weather can be unpredictable - the next landmass south of this spot is Antarctica, so dress appropriately.

HMS Investigator

Length: 850m Approximately Type: Loop Terrain: Medium to Steep Plenty of free carparking No toilets.

Back in the 1800’s the whaling industry had a house on the side of the Bluff. There were people on lookout for whales - when one was spotted a flag was raised, a whaling boat was launched, and the search was on to harpoon them and bring them back. Mining was also started view from the top of The Bluff

Adelaide Classic Rally by Jace and Andy

After a 6 year hiatus, the Classic Adelaide Rally returned to both the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia. Andy, our man on the spot, took these images of the various classic, through to more modern vehicles participating in the “Fleurieu Friday Stage” of this year’s event. The introduction of the Adelaide Motorsport Festival in 2014 sparked much interest amongst the South Australian motorsport community, and reminded us of the rich motoring heritage we possess. In 2015 the Classic Adelaide Rally returned as a major component of the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, recreating the iconic and world renowned Tarmac Rally of South Australia that was held between 1996 and 2009. The nostalgic nature and world class quality of the rally is fitting with the concept of the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, and maintains the authenticity of the original Classic Adelaide Rally theme. The main field of competition is for cars pre 1986, with sub-categories for both Early Classic (pre 1972), Late Classic (pre 1986) and new speed limited category of Thoroughbred Trophy (pre 1986).

56

cars of the rally For competitors with more modern vehicles (1986-Current), a TSD Trophy class was offered that was also speed limited to 130kmph. Uniquely, competitors within this class were required to meet a set average speed on each stage posing a mathematical challenge for both Driver and Co Driver. The rally centered around Victoria Park for scrutineering on Thursday 16th October and cars headed out to the Fleurieu on Friday Morning for day one of competition. Saturday saw the rally take to the Adelaide Hills before returning to Victoria Park for the Podium Presentation.
