Focus on Diabetes is hosting the Cedar Valley Focus on Diabetes Symposium annually the first weekend in September after Labor Day. Diabetes affects all ethnicities and all ages. In truth, complications from diabetes causes more deaths annually than Breast Cancer and Aids combined. increases the risk for many serious health problems. Many people with diabetes are able to prevent or delay the onset of complications causing problems in the eyes, kidneys, feet, nerves and eventually the brain and heart.

The Cedar Valley has an aging population and the need for strategies to educate residents on the most up to date treatments and manage their expectations concerning lifestyle adjustments related to diabetic care must come from the trusted institutions and professional practitioners in the community.

MISSION STATEMENT Focus on Diabetes offers diabetic education, care, and treatment options by offering presentations in the community by industry professionals. For the betterment of the community through exercise and nutrition.

Every 17 seconds, someone in the United States is diagnosed with diabetes. Every day, 230 Americans with diabetes will undergo an amputation, and 120 will develop end-stage renal disease. Diabetes affects all ethnicities and ages, 16% of people living with diabetes were diagnosed between the ages of 18-39 years-old.

Managing a diabetic lifestyle is not just for the patient but for the family as well.

Lifestyle modifications have been proven to effectively keep diabetes in control. A lifetime management plan including small changes in eating habits and exercise have proven to lead to improvements in diabetes control, including a decreased need for medication.

People with diabetes incur annually, an average of $13,700 of medical expenses, including $7,900 directly attributed to diabetic care. People known as Generation X are fatter and more likely to develop diabetes earlier in life, dramatically accelerating new diabetic patients and longer patient care; and although baby boomers are living longer, they are not living healthier. Bridget Saffold Bridget serves as a Nephrology nurse and on a daily basis she sees how diabetes affects patients and their families.

A 2006 graduate of the Hawkeye College of Nursing, Bridget has worked as a Red Cross Collection technician on their mobile unit.

Helping patients with chronic Kidney Disease and diabetes is more than just a job.

Focus on Diabetes was conceived from my love for community service and my desire to see the community in which I live be proactive about health and wellness. My personal experience of witnessing several generations of my family manage diabetes and my experience serving as a volunteer across the Cedar Valley influenced my decision to host this. The positive response from the community confirmed that this was wanted and needed.

IHope Free Medical Clinic IHope free medical clinic and Focus on Diabetes share the belief in impacting the community through serving those in need. IHope is a faith based organization passionate about the mission of transformation of people’s lives through prayer and mission.

Founders and directors, Dr. Mike and Mary Jo Peters are long term Cedar Valley residents. In addition to serving in the IHope clinic, the Peter’s coordinates oversees mission trips that provide free medical care to poor and underserved nations. Dr. Peters, an anesthesiologist, has served the cedar valley community for over 25 years.

It is IHOPE’s Mission to offer quality medical care to the poor, uninsured and underinsured of the Cedar Valley. This free medical clinic is staffed by volunteer, accredited doctors and nurses who are concerned with the needs of those around them.

Patti Downs Patti Downs, RRT, a UNI graduate, is the clinic manager at IHope Free Medical Clinic. IHope is one of 40 free clinics who serve the uninsured and underinsured.

Patti worked 40 years as a Respiratory Therapist, approximately 20 years in management. No appointments are necessary to be seen at the clinic but days and times are limited. IHOPE Free Medical Clinic is a Christian-based organization that meets physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients. Her other interests include her grandchildren, church and community gardening.
