nother summer almost over, where did the time go! Still, when the football season starts at the beginning of August this can only bring on the dark evenings and another reason not to open the curtains until spring. But before then, there are many new willing businesses in this edition eager to show how they can best serve their local customers by being available now and throughout all the coming dark winter months, offering their services right on your doorstep. At Focus Brackley we try to encourage all local businesses into the magazine, see page 57, giving local people the choice to buy and shop locally from just one source. Look through the editorials from local businesses and see how

they already serve and benefit from your calls of help and advice. See pages 31-34 where Chilli & Pepper are celebrating their first birthday at the Restaurant in Banbury Road on Wednesday 14th September. On page 33 see how you can join in the celebrations. KBC Flooring Specialist based in the heart of the town at the Courtyard Mews, Market Place supply all types of floor coverings see page 43. Another best kept secret is Onthe-Move-Mobility see page 27 for many home and mobility aids. There are many more inside so feel free to browse and leave it on the coffee table or handy by the phone as you never know when you might need a LOCAL business to serve you.

A pain in the neck?

ost of us suffer from neck and shoulder tension from time to time. As an Osteopath and Pilates teacher, I help a lot of patients with neck pain, shoulder tension and headaches. Consider how much of your day is spent with your arms out in front of you? These can increase tension in the shoulder muscles. This in itself can be painful, but can also irritate joints and nerves in the neck and can even cause headaches.

The 18th Century origins of Hypnotherapy

ver since the late 18th century when Frans Anton Mesmer brought the use of hypnosis (mesmerism) as a therapeutic tool to the attention of the public, therapists have been using it as a powerful tool to help people.

The use of Hypnotherapy goes back much further than Mesmer. If Mesmer were to be called the Father of Hypnosis, then the great, great --- grandfather of Hypnosis could arguably be the ancient Egyptian priest, Imhotep. (I-em-hotep, he comes in peace)

Today we use hypnotherapy to help people with a vast range of problems. Hypnosis, in therapy can be traced back over 4000 years. The Egyptians used healing sanctuaries to heal people with both physical and mental problems, most of which today would be classed as psychological. These healing sanctuaries were called “Sleep or Dream Temples.” In these temples, the sick person was put in to a trance like sleep; priests and priestesses

then interpreted the person’s dreams to gain knowledge about the illnesses and find a cure. Today we use hypnotherapy to help people with a vast range of problems and • Bob Caton thanks to the Complimentary Natural Health Council (CNHC) which is the only registration body for this profession that is accepted by the Department of Health, there is a greater acceptance of it’s value in helping people. Bob Caton DHP. MNRAH. Reg Hyp. Reg CNHC, an international hypnotherapist who has recently achieved CNHC registration and moved to Brackley said, “this is a great leap forward for our profession and ensures that registered practitioners have achieved the necessary levels of skill and experience”. Activity on Referral lives on in South Northants!!!

n 31st March 2011, following the government’s decision, the Primary Care Trust actively removed both the funding and support commission for the Activity on Referral programme which enabled your GP or practice nurse to refer you for a course of exercise or activity as part of the rehabilitation process following physical or mental illness. However, from 1st April 2011, the South Northants Leisure Trust has agreed to continue funding the programme at both Towcester Centre for Leisure and Brackley Leisure Centre thus actively reducing barriers for participation and access to sport and physical activity for all ages and abilities across the wider community.

• Recovery through fitness.

This has included investing further into the training and development of the health and fitness professionals and purchasing range of new disability fitness equipment which is due to be delivered at Brackley Leisure Centre this Autumn. The referral scheme consists of a 12 week programme where you will be given close one-to-one advice and programming throughout your 12-weeks. As part of your last session you will undergo a final assessment enabling you to see for yourself what you have achieved and discuss how you can continue your new healthy lifestyle. How do I take part? The first step is to visit your local practitioner who will issue you with an exercise referral form. Following a successful referral you will be asked to contact the Activity on Referral co-ordinator at your chosen centre. Log on to for more information.

On-The-Move Mobility –

ow life changes when one suddenly goes from being fit and healthy to perhaps losing some motor skills or control of limbs or body functions. Not only is it daunting, frustrating and intimidating, one often feels too proud to accept the assistance offered, or too embarrassed to ask for help. What’s important is you realise that life can, however, carry on with some normality with the basic assistance of many of the mobility products and daily personal aids available – which change what may seem now an impossible task, into a simple action. Many people are not aware of the vast range of equipment available, making such a difference to everyday living. Even more are not aware that

But don’t be under any illusion it’s not just a fluke, it’s every time. Not only that, but it is excellent value for money as the customers and owner and Restaurant Manager Anur will tell you. Having worked in the restaurant business since he was fourteen years old Anur has grown up knowing what makes running a restaurant a... “great recipe". Starting his career simply peeling potatoes at the age of fourteen he quickly learned the family trade and set his sights on raising the standards along with making it an ambition to own his own restaurant business. At the age of seventeen Anur achieved that ambition and

moved onto owning a total of five other restaurants, closely working with family, friends and dedicated staff to his own special formula.

At Chilli and Pepper the emphasis is always on the quality of food and is equaled only by the importance attached to friendly, efficient service. All of the staff are highly trained and pride themselves on the personal attention they give to each table and person in turn, ensuring the diners feel comfortable. The continuing customer base is very broad and it includes many families and visitors from around the local area.

Having worked in the restaurant business since he was fourteen years old Anur has grown up knowing what makes running a restaurant a... “Great recipe”. Customers are also welcomed to celebrate special occasions. Anur welcomes birthday parties, anniversaries, leaving parties or any occasion that you would like to celebrate and takes special care to ensure your evening is a “Special Occasion”. Extras such as flowers, birthday cakes can be provided to give your occasion that extra special touch, just contact the Restaurant for further details. A variety of dishes are available from the full menu but three main specialities stand out from the rest as Anur explains. “From the menu we currently have a varied selection of Balti, Tandoori and Fish dishes which prove very popular with many of our regular customers”. “The chef and cooking staff apply consistency to the preparation, cooking and presentation to produce fine food served to the table”.

More recently on the 14th September 2010 Anur set out again to try his “great recipe” on the premises in Brackley known formerly as the Masala Lounge, which was transformed by way of a total refurbishment programme, involving all new fixtures, fittings and kitchen to create Chilli & Pepper. Now after one year, the recipe has all the correct and vital ingredients including and most importantly, steady, loyal customers.

Food & Drink - Happy 1st Birthday! As is expected in a great restaurant like Chilli & Pepper the fully licensed drinks bar offers a great selection of traditional Indian beer along with spirits and a great selection of wines to accompany the meal. If you have not tried Chilli & Pepper and want to experience something quite different by way of the Indian cuisine then telephone 01280 706922 and reserve your table.

Chill & Pepper Specialities Balti - Meaning and origins Balti is more a style of cooking than one particular curry. The word Balti can be translated as "bucket" (i.e. a cooking pan) and some say the style of cooking is indigenous to an area of northern Pakistan known as Baltistan. A Balti pan is basically a Karahi which has the shape of a Chinese wok but with 2 small round handles on either side of the pan instead of one long handle. In specialist "Balti Houses" the Balti is a meal in itself which contains both meat and vegetables and is eaten straight from the Karahi using curled up pieces of Naan bread. In standard Indian restaurants the Balti is more of a stir-fried curry containing plenty of fried green peppers and fresh coriander.

At Chilli and Pepper the emphasis is always on the quality of food and is equaled only by the importance attached to friendly, efficient service. is used for cooking certain types of Indian foods such as Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Tikka and bread varieties like Tandoori Roti and Naan. The heat for a Tandoor was traditionally generated by a charcoal fire or wood fire, burning within the Tandoor itself, thus exposing the food to live-fire. Temperatures in a Tandoor can approach 480 °C (900 °F), and it is common for Tandoor ovens to remain lit for long periods to maintain the high cooking temperature it is a form of oven between a makeshift earth oven and the horizontal-plan masonry oven. Modern day Tandoors use electricity or gas instead of charcoal.

Bed and Bark-fest – a hotel for dogs

ou may have heard the expression you must be Barking Mad quite often but Shirley Rands who launched her business in Northamptonshire 10 months ago, is happy to be claiming just that! Shirley from Brackley reports that the first 10 months of trading as a local franchisee of national pet care company Barking Mad has been a tremendous success, with almost 90 customers registered already and over 30 host families. Barking Mad is a home from home pet care service and customers have been very quick to see the value of this solution to dog care when they need to leave their best friend to go away on holiday, business or in to hospital. Shirley said “I completely understand how dogs become a precious and important part of

the family. Mine certainly is to me and it’s so rewarding to be providing a service which gives dog owners the confidence to leave their loved ones in excellent hands and have a carefree holiday. The best bit is seeing relaxed and happy owners and dogs, what more could you ask for”. Shirley went on to say “Our customers have complete peace of mind knowing their pets are being cared for in a home environment similar to their own, whilst our host families are able to enjoy all of the benefits of owning a dog but on a part time basis. Like being a grandparent, you have all the fun before handing the grandchildren back, and Barking Mad is the canine equivalent”. If you would like to discuss your dogs dream holiday or apply to become a host family please contact Shirley on 01280 700110 or email:

Cloudy2Clear Windows –

t’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Trevor Skidmore feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which,

Tax tips - The Taxman will help protect you…

f you work outside you'll know about taking care in the sun; sunburn, sunstroke, even skin cancer are all potential risks (and, with our usual weather, perhaps rust as well). So using sun lotions and sun block is becoming more of a health necessity rather than a holiday accessory.

You may not be aware that, as a health protection, you have a good reason to claim the cost of your sun cream against tax What you may not be aware of though is that, as a health protection, you have a good reason to claim the cost of your sun cream against tax. With sun cream costing around £10 a time that means tax relief of at least £2 per bottle/ tube (up to £4 for a higher rate taxpayer).

If you're self employed then your accountant will probably already told you about claiming, but if you are employed you will just need to keep receipts and claim the total on your tax return. Make it less taxing… If any part of your travels are business related (doing business banking when you're out shopping etc.,) make sure to claim the full travel costs (the mileage, parking etc.,) even if you travel on a bicycle you can still claim 20p per mile (up to 45p per mile in a car). It may not seem worth the bother, but even a couple of trips per month can add up to enough from the taxman to pay for a meal out once or twice a year… the taxman's always taking, so get him to contribute something back for once!. Fleas are here again!

t's flea season again, as many of our patients are currently telling us how itchy they are.

Fleas are small reddish brown insects. The adults live on your pet and when they bite they are actually drinking blood. The eggs and larvae live in the environment. Did you know that for every flea you see on your pet there will be hundreds of young fleas in the carpets and pets bedding waiting to jump onto you or your pet?

Many pets can have lots of fleas and suffer surprisingly little irritation but others will have an allergic reaction to this saliva.

When the flea bites its saliva contains chemicals that stop the blood clotting to allow them to suck the blood. Many pets can have lots of fleas and

Home Indoors suffer surprisingly little irritation but others will have an allergic reaction to this saliva. These poor animals will be severely troubled by as few as one or two fleas, and will lick and scratch their skin making it red and wearing the fur away. This irritation can continue even after the fleas have gone.

The secret for appropriate flea control is treat your pet for both fleas and tapeworms. In addition to biting humans and irritating your pets skin, fleas also carry tapeworm eggs so if your pet has fleas he or she will likely also have tapeworms. The secret therefore for appropriate flea control is- Treat your pet for both fleas AND tapeworms and treat the environment as well with an agent that kills all the eggs and larvae. We hope you have a flea free summer!

Are hybrid cars better for the environment?

hat are these Hybrid Cars? Hybrid cars are part battery-electric and part conventional cars. The underlying principle of all hybrid vehicles is the use of a temporary energy storage device (usually a battery), which enables the main engine to be operated at close to its maximum efficiency. Two types of hybrid drive have been developed. 'Series hybrids' use a combustion engine to generate electricity, which powers an electric motor so providing motive power. In 'parallel hybrids', the wheels can be either directly powered by the engine or from a batterypowered electric drive-train. In both types, when the engine loading is low, the excess energy is stored for later use. When more energy is required, the main engine and the energy storage device work together to deliver the required power. In this way, hybrids provide improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

Motors Most hybrids operate in electric mode at low speeds, which makes them ideal for urban driving. Battery storage enables the use of regenerative braking which tops up the battery during braking, further reducing overall fuel consumption by around 20%. Performance of hybrids is similar to that of a conventional car and acceleration is broadly comparable or even slightly improved. From the outside, most hybrids look little different from other new conventional models. At low speeds, you may also be aware of the lack of engine noise (while in electric-only mode). All hybrid cars currently on the UK market use conventional petrol and an advantage of petrol- (and diesel-) fuelled hybrid cars is that they require no change in fuel and so use the existing UK fuelling infrastructure. Next time the costs to the environment and hybrid cars.

Barnett Motorsport update

the lottery of the races car 36 left standing 10th in the Championship.

fter Brands Hatch the races came thick and fast in the Toyota sponsored MR2 Championship. Briar Hill Engineering transplanted the engine and gearbox for freshly rebuilt units and Barnett Motorsport headed to Norfolk for rounds 3 and 4.

Donington was a very hot affair and round 7 was a double distance double points race. The car worked beautifully and Rob drove exceptionally to record another top 6 finish in class even after two red flags. He now stands 7th in the Championship out of 56 in class.

Snetterton was dry and very windswept and the car started to show the promise expected. Even with a slipping clutch Rob piloted the car home to a season best 6th place finish. Mallory Park was up next for rounds 5 and 6 and with the gearbox and clutch sorted the team were full of hope. It turned out that a boat would have been a better option but despite

As well as and the Facebook page you can now follow progress on YouTube at BarnettMotorsport36 where there is lots of onboard and trackside footage. Thank you as ever to Briar Hill Engineering, Julian Hunt, Midlands Windscreens Focus Magazine Group and Beacon Water.

Next we go into the summer break with rounds 8 and 9 held somewhat closer to home at Silverstone on the 28th August if you’d like to get out and support Rob at his home track. This leaves time to make some tweaks to the car and carry out general maintenance.
