The Befriending Scheme, Northamptonshire

T

he Alzheimer’s Society, Northamptonshire is seeking volunteers for a Befriending Scheme across the county. Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading support services and research

charity for people with dementia and those who care for them. There are 700,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2025. Alzheimer’s Society works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. When a person is diagnosed with dementia, it is likely to have an impact on some of their abilities but there will still be lots that the person can enjoy doing, both individually and with others. Maintaining existing skill and interests, as far as possible, can give the person pleasure and boost their confidence. For this reason, it is important to

help them find activities that they enjoy doing, and to continually adapt them to meet the person’s changing interests and needs, throughout the illness. Just a couple of hours on a regular basis and you can make a real difference to someone with Dementia. The success of our Befriending Scheme is down to our team of volunteers and their commitment and passion mean that people with dementia can be supported in accessing their community or pursuing a hobby or interest for as long as possible. We would be delighted to hear from you if you would like to volunteer your time and make a real difference to people affected by dementia in Northamptonshire. If you would like to know more then please contact Dawn Panter, Befriending Manager on 07850 929662/01604 741958 or email dawn.panter@ alzheimers.org.uk

WHO SAID THAT?

B

elow you will find some well-known quotes, some are famous lines from films and the others were really said. But can you match them?

“I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”

“Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about 6 weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of The Nostromo, signing off. “ “Thank you for your coffee, seignor. I shall miss that when we leave Casablanca.” “Beginnings are scary. Endings are usually sad, but it’s the middle that counts the most. “ “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.” “Elizabeth Taylor has more chins than the Chinese telephone directory.”

“”

“Once a month the sky falls on my head, I come to, and I see another movie I want to make.” “Monica Seles: I’d hate to be next door to her on her wedding night!”

“One of my movies was called “True Lies.” It’s what the Democrats should have called their convention.” “I failed to make the chess team because of my height.” “All I need to make comedy is a park, a policeman and a pretty girl.” (Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump ); Charlie Chaplin; (Sandra Bullock as Birdee Pruitt in Hope Floats); Peter Ustinov; (Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund in Casablanca); Steven Spielberg ; (Sigourney Weaver as Ripley in Alien ); Arnold Schwarzenegger; (Julia Roberts as Anna Scott in Notting Hill ); Joan Rivers; (Mel Gibson as William Wallace Braveheart ); Woody Allen

Great Ideas - Here today gone tomorrow

reat ideas and sometimes at great expense both financially and socially. But what is change for, is it for the better or worse? Is it a way to create new jobs just to keep the social and economic wheel turning and to keep school leavers at school for as long as possible so that the unemployment figures look good? Look at our health and safety standards, perhaps the highest in the world. Needed of course but do we go over the top? Children’s school trips being cancelled because Teachers fear they may break health and safety rules and face litigation if a pupil has an accident. Our fire fighters stand by and watch buildings burn down restricting the fire to the immediate vicinity as they can no longer enter the building to fire fight unless there is a life risk. Take ASBOS (Anti-socialbehaviour orders) for example,

the new government say that they want to move beyond them, The home secretary Theresa May says police should be able to use their “common sense” to deal with anti-social behaviour, come on, get a grip, this is the real world out here, not your ivory tower Mrs May. Only in May this year HIPS (Home information Packs) were scrapped 33 months after being introduced building an industry from nothing and then casting aside 3000 jobs overnight. That’s progress. Maybe it’s just an admission of a something that achieves very little.

theresa May says police should be able to use their “common sense” to deal with anti-social behaviour So what’s next? Perhaps another Scrappage scheme, this time for motorbikes, bicycles, toasters or even your dentures? Who knows!

How to help your dog through Bonfire Night

M

any dogs are scared of sudden or unusually loud noises, often most apparent in their response to the sound of fireworks. In general if dogs are exposed to a variety of sights and sounds from an early age, they are less likely to have adverse reactions when they grow up. There is, however, no guarantee that even the calmest of dogs won’t display an unexpected reaction later in life – it only takes a single scary event to induce a fear response.

Dogs that are frightened of fireworks may be restless, tremble, pant, drool, whine or bark Dogs that are frightened of fireworks may be restless, tremble, pant, drool, whine or bark. Their temperaments can change and they can also make attempts to escape to somewhere quieter. There are some simple things that you can do on Bonfire Night to help your dog cope a little better with the loud bangs. Aim to reassure your dog without

WINDOWS DOORS & CONSERVATORIES

reinforcing the fear, set a good example by not reacting to the noise and try to ignore any fearful behaviour. Close the curtains and put on the television or some music to drown out some of the noise. Divert your dog’s attention by providing food filled toys. Provide a safe haven or den but make sure your dog is used to the space well in advance. Your veterinary surgeon can prescribe sedatives for the worst affected dogs but more importantly will be able to advise you about treatments that may be useful in the months leading up to Bonfire Night. Sound therapy can be used to teach your dog not to be upset by the noises. Pheromone diffusers, collars and sprays are available which can have a calming effect on dogs in stressful situations. There are also some natural and herbal remedies available without prescriptions. Towcester Veterinary Centre 01327 350239

Reflections on Reflexology

R

eflexology has been practised for a very long time in various cultures around the world for lots of good reasons. But what is so special about a therapeutic foot massage?

1) Most people find it extremely relaxing and it is often very effective in the treatment of any stress-related illness. 2) Reflexology helps balance all the systems of the body. How many other treatments can claim to do this? 3) Feet never lie. Although a precise diagnosis cannot be made from palpating the feet, general imbalances can often be felt and these can point to the origins of health problems. 4) It can help regulate painful and/ or irregular periods, along with other complaints involving imbalances of the endocrine system. 5) Regular reflexology treatment helps maintain good health. 6) Reflexology can be used in conjunction with other treatments as appropriate.

Beware - Autumn Leaves

I

t happens every time of the year and some of the most spectacular autumn scenes are available for all to see locally. The garden, woods and forests are all there to view in their splendour and beauty. It always seems to come as a surprise to people that leaves fall off the trees in the autumn. I do reassure them that this happened before and that the phase will pass. However it’s taken as a personal affront that the leaves have fallen

at this time of year a new ritual takes place “leaf herding”, it takes priority over washing the car on a Sunday morning on their paths, roofs, cars and their gutters steadily building up with lack of cleaning they eventually overflow. When one downpour too many occurs this results in water cascading over the gutters and down the outside wall. I tell them that just a few hours

falling again this year pruning the excess foliage one spring day would have averted this Niagara Autumn Falls. At this time of year a new ritual takes place “Leaf herding”, it takes priority over washing the car on a Sunday morning. The whine of the two stroke motors can be heard powering the leaf blowers which triumphantly gather leaves from the four corners of the garden from early morning to the failing light. Golden brown, crimson red, water drenched and rotting leaves resemble wounded butterflies being herded like strays to a convenient spot. The sound only silenced by the last leaf to fall victim to the blower and then laid to rest in the recycling bin until next Sunday when it starts all over again! Happy collecting.

Modern techniques have been developed which combines old and new technology on a scale that ensures eggs remain affordable for every family. Hens are now housed in larger flocks – several thousand all benefiting from “mod cons”. Each house has areas for the hens to dust bathe and scratch and they are never without food and water. outside Free Range story extends the birds daytime ensuring a regular supply of eggs. Regulations insist that each farm provides pne acre of field per 400 chickens and they are free to roam over the pastures. Birds retreat to the shaded areas in bright sunlight and at night so the best time to see them ranging is early morning and dusk.

epairing damaged exterior rendered surfaces such as cracked steps, chips in patio or paving, all call for a firm no nonsense fix that withstand both the hot and cold elements of Summer and Winter.

With the right materials the fix can be simple and easy. So a Multi Purpose Exterior Filler is tough against sun and frosts and sets in about 60 mins. More importantly it doesn’t shrink or crack. Quick Set Cement which is ideal for resetting bolts or brackets into walls can also be used for making good repairs to drains, underwater, in and around ponds. Tip- for both concrete fillers add a little PVA adhesive to improve adhesion.

Concrete and Wood For the hard to get at gaps where conventional fillers are more difficult to use then try a Foam Filler (Expander). There may be a small hole but a deep large cavity. A pipe might pass through a wall and the hole requires filling but be careful not to over fill the cavity, when set the foam can be trimmed, then plastered over and finally painted.

For the hard to get at gaps where conventional fillers are more difficult to use then try a Foam Filler (Expander). Cracks and holes in wood are unsightly. When decorating its best to address the repairs early on. Wood is a natural material and prone to movement so it’s important to use flexible wood filler that bonds strongly. Sand down the rough areas with a coarse sandpaper before applying the filler and finish off with a light sandpaper after applying the filler. the Winter months Insulate the greenhouse and test the heater for the hard frosts ahead as well as any pots left out for winter. Bring other pots into storage; try using pot feet to raise containers in order to prevent water logging. Lag outdoor taps and water pipes and move hosepipes under cover. December – More hard frosts and it’s time to harvest winter cabbages and cauliflowers, Brussels sprouts should be starting and eat them on other days as well as Christmas Day! Leeks should be about ready, take what you need and leave the rest when required. Lift Carrots for storage in peat or sand if they haven't already, Lift Celery, Parsnips and Swedes, although hardy, may be left if the ground and can be covered with fleece or straw. Check vegetables already in storage and remove anything rotten. Onions sown just after Christmas will make excellent plants and bulbs, Sow in seed boxes out in the greenhouse or cold frames if they can be kept frost free. Kids, they are not all bad but the best way to communicate with them is by mobile phone or a raspberry or is it blackberry? Grumpy Grandad!! I started a new collection the other day, the aim is to collect 6 vouchers off discarded drinks cartons that blow onto my drive (which shouldn’t be hard) and which litter the road outside my house. With them I can collect a free coffee from the “Big Chain” drive through. At least they can buy me a FREE coffee for clearing up after their customers mess!

Where do I stop? Well, for now it’s all about a non negotiable council local building development and a recent central government grant given to extend a new footpath by about one metres width the breadth of Towcester at a cost of £300k. Now Winters on its way and energy and petrol price increases loom. Is Great Britain still Great? Of course it is but why was it “Great Grandad”? Oh no, not again… perish the thought!!

Rob Barnett Motorsport

T

owcester driver, Rob Barnett, continues his campaign in the 750 Motor Club Championship with recent outings at Brands Hatch and Silverstone.

One of a large field of 34 drivers, Rob did well to finish 5th in the first race at Brands Hatch, from a starting position of 12th.”It’s a challenging circuit as many parts of the track are quite tight, but I got a good start. There were some hard fought overtaking battles out there. I really enjoyed it and I was pleased with the result,” he commented after the race. In the second, event-filled race Rob once again worked his way up to 5th. However, contact with another car while overtaking on Druid’s hairpin left Rob’s MR2 in need of some attention before Silverstone.

The team were looking forward to their ‘home’ circuit on August Bank Holiday. The car ran well in testing, lap times were encouraging. It seemed that little could stand in the way of another top six finish. Local sponsors, Julian Hunt and Briar Hill

Bodywork Dents & Repairs

MOT’s

Engineering, watched the car make a strong showing in the opening laps. Disappointment loomed as it became apparent that all was not well. Only 4 laps from the finish Rob retired the car with head gasket failure. “It’s frustrating, but that’s motor racing,” said a philosophical Rob. “Now we have to get the car back into shape for the Birkett Relay in October.” Thanks to sponsors: Beacon Water Treatment, Focus Towcester, Briar Hill Engineering, Julian Hunt and Towcester Motorists Centre and the ‘pit crew’. Rob has a web site: www.barnettmotorsport.co.uk and the championship is covered on Motors TV.

Getting to grips with new car finance

T

his time we explain three products offered when purchasing a car on Finance.

Payment Protection Insurance PPI is the insurance that covers payments if you are unable to work through accident, sickness or some instances of unemployment. It can be a valuable insurance, but has become notorious for being costly, difficult to claim on, difficult to cancel and often sold when it is inappropriate. The total cost of the insurance is often rolled up into the amount borrowed so policyholders end up paying interest on the premiums and find it difficult to cancel.

finance deals you have signed up to. GAP is designed to cover this possible shortfall, so it can be a valuable extra. Read the policy to make sure that all costs are taken into account as it has been known for some GAP policies not to live up to expectations.

gaP is designed to cover this possible shortfall, so it can be a valuable extra. Vehicle Replacement Cover

Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP)

This is designed to top up your car insurance so you can have a brand-new replacement if it is written off. It can be useful if your car insurance pays out only the current market value of the car. Some policies will actually pay for a brand new replacement so check before you take Vehicle Replacement Cover.

If your car is written off through accident, fire or theft, a comprehensive car insurance policy will pay out its current market value, but it will not pay for any outstanding

Remember that you are entitled to obtain independent quotations for similar or improved products when buying your new car. Next Time: Car Insurance Basics.
