May = MelaNOma Awareness Caban Skin Institute Spreading the Word What is this word Melanoma? Why is it so serious? What do I do? These are all questions we may ask ourselves and there is one place that can give you all the answers you need. May is MelaNOma Awareness month and Dr. Francis Caban and his employees at the Caban Skin Institute take pride in helping spread the word on just how easy it is to have peace of mind. Melanoma is a dark-pigmented, usually malignant tumor arising from a melanocyte and occurring most commonly on the skin. In laymans terms it is the most serious type of skin cancer and can be fatal if not treated.
Melanocytes are the cells that make melanin, which gives our skin its color. It also protects the deeper layers of the skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. If our skin receives too much UV light, the melanocytes may begin to grow abnormally (in size and color) and become cancerous. This condition is called melanoma. Each year more than 50,000 people in the U.S. learn they have melanoma. If found in its early stages, the chances of recovery are very good. If not found early, it can grow deeper into your skin and spread to other parts of the body. Once melanoma has spread

to other parts of the body beyond the skin, it is difficult to treat and therefore can be life threatening. As Floridians, most of our time outside is spent in the sun and a majority of the time, we do not protect ourselves. “It is imperative that we protect ourselves with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher,” say’s Dr. Caban. Through the Caban Skin Institute not only will you receive the best treatment with the latest technologies and equipment, but Dr. Caban can help answer any question or concern you may have. Again, early detection is vital to any treatment program and a yearly check-up is highly recommended.
