FALL 2017 HIGHLIGHTS HALLOWEEN TRICK OR TREAT TOWN 2017 RAISES OVER $17,000 FOR COMMUNITY The Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department and co -sponsoring agency Access Alaska held the 5 t h annual Halloween Trick or Treat Town on Saturday, October 28 t h , 2017 f rom 12PM – 7PM at Pioneer Park. There was trick or treating, free train rides, entertainment, f ace painting, balloon animals, Halloween games, costume cont ests, f ood trucks, a hay bale maze, and more. An estimated 6,500 people attended the event and over $17,000 was raised to benef it Access Alaska and the FNSB Pioneer Park Playground Fund. W ith the proceeds, Access Alaska plans to improve existing inclusive programs and Pioneer Park will use the f unds towards f uture playground development eff orts at the park. This year’s event was f unded through local sponsors and communit y businesses. The FNSB Parks and Recr eation Department and Access Alaska would like to say thank you f or your generous contributions to the event. A special thank you goes out to the Mar ine Corps Junior ROTC and the many volunteers that made this year ’s event a success.

Thank you to all of the participants who volunteered their time and efforts on National Public Lands Day in September. The trail, known as the “Van Trail” or “Goldstream Connector,” was damaged in the spring by trespassing off-road trucks, resulting in a temporary trail closure. Volunteers helped open the trail for winter by clearing debris and smoothing the trail surface. Thank you for all of your hard work!

Have you taken a great picture in the park or during an event and want to share it? Send it to VISTAPR@FNSB.US with your contact information and we may feature your photo on our social media or in the next activity guide! 4

Hello Seniors, Happy New Year 2018! Don’t let the darkness, cold temperatures, or lack of transportation keep you house bound. It has been proven that exercising as little as 30 minutes a day helps: lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, lower the risk of diabetes and reduce the progression of arthritis. Our exercise classes last only 30 minutes offering a variety of exercises and mobility stretches. You can set your own goals within your personal limits as well as share pleasant conversation with others. Those participating find the socialization and humor quite rejuvenating. It’s a great way to keep in touch, keep moving and meet new faces. The best part is that you don’t have to drive. Van Tran provides transportation, at no cost to you, so please call and join us. Also, we offer outings every month complete with free transportation that include: Shopping, Movies, Breakfast Club, and other events that are happening in our community. Once you are registered with the Senior Program you can request to go on these outings complete with transportation. If you would like to receive the Golden Age Gazette, call 459-1136 and leave your name, address and phone number on our voicemail, so you may be added to our mailing list and soon be receiving our bimonthly newsletter. Be sure to mark your calendar with the outings you would like to participate in, followed by a call to the office requesting those outings. Staff will return your call to verify your requests. It’s time to submit the nomination forms for the Outstanding Senior Volunteer and Lifetime Senior Fitness Awards. The awardees are recognized on Senior Recognition Day, which will be on Thursday, May 10, 2018 10am-1pm, held at the Carlson Center. Please don’t wait for the last minute to submit your nomination form to honor a special senior who exemplifies outstanding volunteerism in our community or is the energetic, active senior committed to a healthy lifestyle. The nomination forms may be obtained at the Parks & Recreation Office or online.

ADAPTIVE RECREATION

The Parks & Recreation Adaptive Program provides a variety of recreational, social, and leisure opportunities for people who experience disabilities. These programs promote independent individual interaction in a supervised group setting. All individuals must be registered to participate. If you are interested in any of these programs, or would like to receive our free newsletter, please contact: Tiffany Corrigan, Adaptive Program Coordinator at 907-459-1097 or tcorrigan@fnsb.us.

Hello Adaptive Participants & Caregivers, There is a new Adaptive Program Waiver and information paperwork for everyone to complete and return to me. If you have not received the new Waiver please contact my office, so that we may make the necessary arrangement for you to receive it. It is required for everyone wishing to participate in our program to have this waiver completed along with the other necessary assessment and information. This month, we are introducing a new schedule. The intentions are to minimize the travel between different venues on one day, we will now remain at one destination for both the drop offs and pick-ups. Mondays will remain unchanged with Bowling at Arctic Bowl as it is definitely a favorite and the time fits well with everyone’s schedule. Tuesdays, we will be spending the day at the Big Dipper. We will start with walking, then offer the choice to ice skate inside or play board /card games in the Conference Room followed with snow shoeing, cross-country skiing or sledding. Wednesdays, we will have all our program fun at Hunter Elementary School’s Gym. This will include team sports, games, wheelchair basketball and other fun activities. Thursdays, we will continue with Art and Swimming at Mary Siah Recreation Center. Fridays, we will use the exercise equipment upstairs at Mary Siah Recreation Center for the Exercise Program and then put a new spin on the cultural activities by having in house fun downstairs in the Mary Siah Activity Room. We will order pizza and watch a movie, play Bingo and have snacks, have a Karaoke Night complete with dancing. We will continue to attend the Special Olympic s’ Dance on the third Saturday of the month. Transportation will remain through the FNSB Van Tran at no cost to you when you state your request be for transport to FNSB Parks & Recreation Adaptive Programs. Please, remember to place your program requests to the Adaptive Program Office at 459-1097 as well as signing–up for the cultural outings. This request must be made by the Wednesday before the Cultural event you wish to attend. Be sure to leave a voicemail if we are unavailable to answer your call, so staff may return your call. For additional information or to register, simply call the Parks & Recreation Adaptive Office, or check online at the Fairbanks North Star Borough website: www.fnsb.us.

BIG DIPPER ICE ARENA

The Big Dipper Ice Arena is owned and operated by the Fairbanks North Star Borough for the benefit of all its residents and visitors. Once an airplane hangar in Tanacross, the structure was reassembled and repurposed as an ice arena in Fairbanks in 1968. Commonly referred to as "The Dipper," the facility hosts public skating, youth and adult hockey, and is home of the Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League. A walking and jogging track is free to the public during scheduled hours. Most areas of the facility, including the ice, are available for private rentals and special events.

EVENT SPONSORSHIP

Please c ontact u s at 907-4 59-1070 if there is a n event you are in terested in spons oring!

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department is committed to planning and creating programs designed to enrich the quality of life as our limited budget will allow. To do this in the past, we solicited donations of prize items, cash donations and business sponsorships throughout the year, as each event occurred. It is our hope that will work with previous donors and new community businesses to provide quality and fun recreation programs and events to the community. There are many different ways you can get involved: be a cash sponsor by selecting a sponsor level, choose one or more events to provide in-kind services or supplies, or a combination of both. If you are interested, please take some time to look over the events! We value our relationship with community businesses and appreciate the very generous nature of everyone in the Fairbanks community. For more information on sponsor levels and benefits, please call 907-459-1070.
