Thanks to all the all-stars that participated in the Annual Alyeska Youth Track and Field Games! Children ages 5-12 participated in running, long jump and softball throw events. Winners in each age group were awarded new bikes, scooters and kites! New this year was a series of practice sessions hosted by parks and recreation staff, which allowed the kids to practice their event before the big day. Don’t forget to sign up again next year!

Together we improved about 100 feet of rough section of the Secret Trail with hand tools. Steel, sweat and smiles can go a long way. Thank you to our sponsors REI Fairbanks, BLM Alaska, Alaska Trails and Interior Trails, and everyone who volunteered their time on a summer Saturday to take care of our public trails! If you didn’t get a chance to join us on June 3rd and would like to be informed about future volunteer opportunities, contact the FNSB Parks and Recreation office. Until then, the trails await- get out there, Fairbanks!

PIONEER PARK 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Pioneer Park celebrated its 50th anniversary over Memorial Day weekend. The celebration featured rides, performances by several local bands, free train rides, free mini golf and carousel rides for the first 500 attendees. Participants were encouraged to take a walk through the old pioneer buildings and give a thought to Fairbanks’ history.

4

200+ people came out to the 1st annual Lake and Trail Festival in June at Tanana Lakes Recreation Area. Special thanks to Trax Outdoor Center, Alaska Dream Adventures, Alaska Canoe School and REI for providing free paddle lessons and fun classes all day long. Look for even more fun at the lake next summer!

The free and familyoriented triathlon was a huge success. Participants biked 5k, ran 2k and paddled 3k on a beautiful July night at Tanana Lakes. One guy was lucky enough to win a free kayak! If you missed this one, be sure to sign up for our winter triathlon series – more information coming soon!

SUMMER CAMP

Two weeks of fun were had at Chena Lake and Pioneer Park as the department ran their first summer of camps for kids ages 5-12. At Adventure Camp, kids explored nature, built fires, went geocaching, and more! The little ones had a great week exploring Pioneer Park, riding the train and getting creative with crafts. Don’t miss out next summer!

MONDAY TRAIL WALKS

Every Monday night throughout the summer, the trails office hosted a series of free trail walks highlighting some of Fairbanks’ best trails. Hikers also participated in the Summer Trails Challenge. Our Winter Trails Challenge begins soon, with this year’s trails announced mid-November. Get outside and enjoy the outdoors, Fairbanks!

ADAPTIVE RECREATION

Dear Participants, Parents and Caregivers:

The Fall/Winter Adaptive program schedule will begin Tuesday, September 5, 2017 and continue through May 31st, 2018. The programs will run Monday through Friday, with the exception of every third Saturday of each month, when we will attend the Special Olympic Dances held at the Elk’s for that week’s cultural outing. The calendar reflects all the changes and times of each activity. A current registration form on file is required to participate in any of the Adaptive Programs. You will be required to register for each of the programs in which you would like to participate. Transportation will be provided through the FNSB Van Tran system at no cost to you when attending the Adaptive Programs.

To register, or acquire information, simply call the Parks & Recreation Adaptive Office at 459-1097 or check online at the Fairbanks North Star Borough website: www.fnsb.us. Please leave a voicemail if we are unavailable, and staff will return your call.

Please be considerate of others; if you register for a cultural event then find you are unable to attend, please cancel no later than the day before the activity. This makes it possible for us to contact someone on the waiting list so they may attend in your place.

We look forward to seeing you participate in the Adaptive Fall/Winter Program fun! 24

EVENT SPONSORSHIP

Please c ontact u s at 907-4 59-1070 if there is a n event you are in terested in spons oring!

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department is committed to planning and creating programs designed to enrich the quality of life as our limited budget will allow. To do this in the past, we solicited donations of prize items, cash donations and business sponsorships throughout the year, as each event occurred. It is our hope that will work with previous donors and new community businesses to provide quality and fun recreation programs and events to the community. There are many different ways you can get involved: be a cash sponsor by selecting a sponsor level, choose one or more events to provide in-kind services or supplies, or a combination of both. If you are interested, please take some time to look over the events! We value our relationship with community businesses and appreciate the very generous nature of everyone in the Fairbanks community. For more information on sponsor levels and benefits, please call 907-459-1070.
