AFTER THE EUPHORIA OF LONDON 2012, WHICH SAW THE BRITISH PUBLIC CHEER ON OUR LOCAL HEROES AND SHOW A SEEMINGLY UN-BRITISH SUPPORT FOR EVERYONE COMPETING. WE AT JAZZ CAFÉ HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO STOP WAVING OUR LITTLE FLAG FOR WORLD TALENT.
Our Schedule for September and October feels like a musical continuation of the love showed for the rest of the world during London 2012 much of this month’s highlights span the worlds four corners. We will play host to a handful of London African Music Festival Shows, as well as celebrating the Birthdays of Fela Kuti and Omar all representative of the world’s second largest continent. With people questioning whether old school lovers rock style reggae can survive London born Jamaican resident Christopher Ellis represents much of Jamaica’s hopes and dream with European interest in Balkan Beats band Mahala Rai Banda, the soul of Denmark Quadron and France’s We Were Evergreen. The USA has strong representation and as in sport they always have legends that made the records we all strive to beat, US interest comes in the form of the quite insane B.Dolan freakshow The Church Of Love And Ruin “Young Lioness” Teedra Moses and long distance runners The Impressions, The S.O.S. Band and our much anticipated version of the pentathlon the five day Candy Dance with Cameo.

Epitomising his father’s soul soaked vocal style, Christopher Ellis made sure to study and nurture his genetic inheritance on stages all over the world alongside his father from a young age and has grown into an artist of importance in his own time. His further tutelage under the late Sugar Minott set him on a path that would see him sign with Stephen Marley’s Ghetto Youth’s International imprint with where he’d evoke Alton’s spirit on ‘End Of Time’ & ‘Willow Tree’
ALABAMA 3 UNPLUGGED + introducing Kara Gordon & The Wreakage Self styled country and acid house fusion collective Alabama 3 fronted by founding members Larry Love and The Very Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Love performing a rare acoustic and unplugged date on the Jazz Café stage. Known as A3 stateside, their most familiar work to date ‘Woke Up This Morning’ was adopted as the theme song to the international hit TV series The Sopranos. Their LP 'Exile on Coldharbour Lane' is which includes ‘The Thrills Are Gone’ is a work of borderline genius and insanity as are their live shows.

Oddisee caught the production bug in the company of greatness at Parliament Funkadelic’s Garry “Diaper Man” Shider’s home. Oddisee founded Diamond District with fellow D.C. rappers X.O. & YU and the buzz from ‘Diamond In The Ruff’ alone saw Oddisee go on to collaborate with the likes of Jazzy Jeff, De La Soul & Hudson and Hudson Mohawke. www.oddiseemusic.com

Influence from Alex’s debut solo release ‘Humo De Tabaco’ can be found in Martin Terefe’s production for Craig David and Jason Mraz. JAZZ CAFE MEETS... QUADRON Highly rated new EPIC Recordings signees Quadron allowed us to tear them away from recording new material for a quick chat. On meeting each other what is it that stood out? COCO: I was already a fan of Robin. A friend played me some Boom Clap Bachelors songs and I knew right away that I wanted to work with Robin. His sound was so much bigger than Copenhagen and he shared a love for soul music. He just had the music in him above any of the other guys I had worked with prior. He even pulled off singing without really knowing how, it sounded amazing I was so happy he agreed to work with me! ROBIN: She was a really good performer; it felt natural for her to be on a stage. There was a sense of ease and comfort that flowed through the room when she sang. You believed every word. she is also great person!

QUADRON + support "GET TO KNOW DENMARK'S QUADRON." JAY-Z Newly signed to Epic Records, rising electro-soul stars Quadron have captured the attention of some of music’s biggest names and can boast to having Jay-Z, Adele, Mark Ronson and Tyler The Creator as fans of their music. The Danish duo comprising of Coco Maja Hastrup Karshøj and Robin Hannibal’s new found stardom stems from the outpouring of love for their 2009 self-titled release, an LP which through Robin’s varied production styles and Coco’s crisp vocals on tracks such as ‘Day’, ‘Pressure’ and ‘Average Fruit’ makes for a pleasingly captivating listening sonic experience. www.myspace.com/quadronquadron
Is your music appreciated in Denmark as it is in the UK & US? ROBIN: That's a hard one… They were never unappreciative, there just wasn't a very big soul scene when the record came out; but that seems to have developed, hopefully we can influence that further. We feel very blessed and fortunate that the UK and US have shown such interest in us. COCO: It sometimes seems a bit ironic that at home they are catching on now we are becoming successful in the states and the rest of the world. But we are slowly getting on the map in the Danish music scene and really appreciate their attention. Has being categorised “electro-pop” in the mainstream press helped in achieving “critical acclaim” simply because it is an easier concept to grasp than Scandinavian Soul? ROBIN: I'm not sure what we are; to me labels are always a bit useless. I think the most interesting music is the one you can't really label. But critical acclaim is a nice thing; obviously you want people to like the music you make. COCO: Genres change so much: what is tagged as soul music today sounds so different to soul back in the day, the same with RnB and Pop.
Musicians are experimenting a lot more these days, and are stepping out of their boxes, creating new sounds. I think we would just call our music soul music because we put a lot of soul into it. If there a song or lyric that fully conveys Quadron's musical message that you’d be happy with as a fans point of reference? COCO: It is really important for us to create ALBUMS not just songs. It's a total experience. We believe in balance, when we write songs we try to have a good mix of different emotions, so it's not just a dance song or just a ballad, we like the songs to push more than one button at a time. Lyrically, I am still developing as a songwriter, so would hate to pick one that stands for our message, maybe if you ask me in 30 years I’ll have one. Of the support from the top level of celebrity and fans can you be more appreciative of one? And which really made you realise "we've made it?" ROBIN: They all matter in different ways. Some of the support from celebrities is also some of our idols, for them to even have listened to our music is a big honour. The everyday music fan is equally as important, they are the ones buying the records, coming to shows, blogging and tweeting about us and spreading the word. COCO: Knowing that some of our idols appreciate our music is more than amazing. But that fact doesn't make us sound better. I have been thinking a lot about "making it", I don't think it's a feeling that can come from the world outside with recognition and pats on the back. I think it's about a point of achievement in your own personal expectations. If 10-year old Coco could see the Coco I am now, she would definitely think I made it, but I definitely feel like there’s a long way to go for Quadron still! “We are about to put out new music this fall with a full new album to follow at the top of next year.”

YES SIR BOSS
York’s legendary DJ Doo Wop has paid more than his fair share of dues. Recognised the world over for pioneering the formats Mixtape DJ's use nowadays. Doo Wop went from making pause cassettes with one turntable and spinning at local house parties and block parties to being internationally known. As well as being the mixtape king Doo Wop rhyming ability is also A1, on the Frankie Cutlass’ ‘Boriquas On The Set’ the kid from the tapes boasted in “Doo Wop is New York’s finest DJ slash emcee competition envy” and in that period no one could dispute that statement.
New signees to Joss Stone’s recently launched Stoned Records, Yes Sir Boss are a band you quite possibly already have that “we were at a festival skanking out to some random band” type of familiarity with. The six man band hailing from Bristol fronted by husky toned and charismatic Matt Sellors are widely influenced giving them an almost all encompassing appeal, sometimes incorporating a jazzy horn section, ska rhythms and rock guitar riffs and a slight air of mainstream in the same song to rapturous effect.

CAMEO Formed in the mid-’70s, Larry Blackmon’s New York ensemble set a new standard for modern dancefloor funk, scoring Top10 hits with albums like ‘Cameosis’ and ‘Knights Of The Sound Table’ before embracing electronic sounds and hitting it big with the multi- platinum 1986 LP ‘Word Up’. With over 17 million albums sold, Cameo is one of the biggest funk bands of any era – but this is a group that continues to evolve. Blackmon and founding member Tomi Jenkins are back on the road with a new line-up and a new album on the way, due 2013.
